What is this?

Both John’s (Fox & Elway) would do well to learn from recent history.

Josh McDaniels came in and traded Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, a first round pick (and that player he acquired) and Tony Scheffler.

Now with a new Executive Vice President of Football Operations and Head Coach the Denver Broncos could possibly let Champ Bailey walk too?

Really?

Pourquoi Elway?

Contract talks?  Let there be dancing and singing in the streets of Denver!  Not so fast, says Bailey.

Earlier today the Denver Post reported that the Denver Broncos were once again in contract talks with cornerback Champ Bailey, resuming negotiations they dropped before last seasons end.

Shorty thereafter, Fox31 Anchor Josina Anderson reported that Bailey is going to sell his house.  That doesn’t sound promising. The full report from Anderson can be seen below:

According to sources close to discussions, “The Broncos’ negotiating posture has not changed in any respect from the offer that was made back in October which provided only limited guarantees. The money represents nothing more than a commitment to the player for just the upcoming season only, which Bailey would be highly unlikely to accept in its current form on the brink of free agency given the lack of security provided beyond the first year of the contract.”

Denver has until February 23rd to place a franchise tag on Bailey, who would otherwise become an unrestricted free agent.  According to Jeff Legwold of The Post, at this point, the Broncos are not expected to use a franchise player tag, and the $15 million, guaranteed salary that comes with it, on Bailey. BaileyHallelujah, right? The Broncos have until Feb. 23rd to franchise tag Bailey, although the Denver Post suggests Denver’s not heading in that direction.

Denver has resumed contract talks with 10-time Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey, but things don’t look very promising as he is now planning to sell his Littleton, Colorado home.  The Broncos, however, want him to stay. “We’ve had some dialogue there,” said Broncos Head Coach John Fox. “There have been discussions. He’s a guy we definitely want to bring back.”

The question is, how much do they want him back?  If Denver doesn’t come up with a contract Bailey and his agent can agree on, Champ may not be a Bronco for much longer.

A little over a week ago our beloved Shannon Sharpe finally made it to the Hall of Fame joining only a few other Broncos. At the time of his retirement Sharpe held nearly every tight end record, earned three super bowl rings, and was arguably considered the best tight end of all time. However, Sharpe still was not elected in his first year of eligibility. If someone with the resume of Shannon Sharpe doesn’t make it the first time around, then it makes you think about several other great players.

Through his first four seasons, Davis rushed for 6,413 yards (4.8 yards per carry) and 56 touchdowns. Among the 24 modern-era Hall of Fame halfbacks and fullbacks, only Earl Campbell (6,457, 4.6 yards per carry) and Eric Dickerson (6,968, 4.8 yards per carry) had more rushing yards during their first four seasons; no member of the Hall of Fame matched Davis’ first-four-season 56 rushing touchdowns.

That’s just a little something about a guy we all love to call The Touchdown. Unfortunately, the mainstream media has a severe under appreciation for Terrell Davis and he may wait a long time to see himself in Canton, Ohio. You hear the excuses all the time, “Well you know he only played 8 seasons, and only four of them were when he was healthy.”

Well, you know who also only had a short but insanely productive career? Hall of Famer Gayle Sayers. Gayle Sayers played 7 seasons in the NFL and which only 4 1/2 where when he was healthy. So it makes you think, is there something wrong with the player, or is there something wrong with the system?

What do you think Bronco fans? Will Terrell Davis ever rightfully make it to the NFL Hall of Fame?

Will Terrell Davis ever make it to the HOF?

Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas

Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas

A new regime is in place, but the same old problems keep appearing for the Denver Broncos.

Vic Lombardi of CBS4 in Denver just reported that Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas injured his achilles tendon during a workout in Georgia today.  His injury is reported to be a tear, but the severity is not yet known.  If it is fully torn, Thomas’ 2011 season could be in deep trouble regardless of developments with the CBA.

So what does this mean for the Broncos? With Eddie Royal out for up to six months coming off hip surgery and now this, the Broncos’ deepest and strongest position suddenly finds itself a little shorthanded.

Aside from Brandon Lloyd, this latest injury most certainly will open up a door for Eric Decker to finally get his shot on offense instead of returning kicks.

How big an impact does this have on the Broncos’ offense? Is it too early to label Thomas ‘injury plagued?’

LockoutIf things keep going the way they are the league and the player’s union will never reach a new collective bargaining agreement. If the new agreement is not reached by March 4th, the owners will lockout the players. This lockout could be detrimental to players such as Eddie Royal who wouldn’t be allowed to rehab from his arthroscopic hip surgery at the team’s facilities or Tim Tebow who will miss the very much needed mental reps over the offseason. There are several disconnects holding the new agreement up like an 18-game season and a rookie pay scale. Despite Roger Goodell‘s adamant statements to the fans that there will be football next season, the owner’s are much more skeptical and ready to close up shop.

The NFL recently told owners that they could lose $1 billion by next September because companies and fans would be unwilling to invest in the league because of the labor uncertainty.

It what some fans believed to be a long shot; former Denver Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe has been elected to the NFL Hall of Fame. Sharpe joins John Elway, Gary Zimmerman and Floyd Little as the fourth member of the Broncos to be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Sharpe was the NFL’s all time leader in reception yardage for a tight end until 1998; he was also the first tight end to amass more than 10,000 yards in his career.

The Denver great finished his career as it began, with the Broncos, he spent two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens (accruing one more Super Bowl victory). His career stats include: 10,060 receiving yards; 62 touchdowns; 815 receptions; and averaging 12.3 yards per reception.

Sharpe finished his NFL career as an eight time Pro Bowler, four time All Pro and three time Super Bowl winner.

Perhaps the man could be best summed up by his most famous quote… While playing the New England Patriots Sharpe said into a sideline telephone, “Mr. President, call in the National Guard! We need as many men as you can spare! Because we are killing the Patriots! We’ll call the dogs off! Send the National Guard please! (during a 34 – 8 rout vs. the Patriots on November 17, 1996).”

Press release below. (Including quotes from Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and Vice President of Football Operations John Elway.) Click here to read the rest of this entry »
