Denver Broncos blog, news and rumors

On Sunday evening, PFT‘s Josh Alper noted that Denver Broncos‘ running back Willis McGahee asked — and was denied — a pay-raise from Denver’s front office.

The PFT report was based off of Mike Klis’ original Denver Post report which stated McGahee fired his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, for unsuccessfully trying to re-negotiate McGahee’s contract with the Broncos.  Sunday afternoon, McGahee seemingly denied that report over Twitter.

McGahee first tweeted the above status before continuing:

Last season in Denver, McGahee rushed 249 times for 1,199 yards and scored five total touchdowns.  At age thirty however, it would make sense for the Broncos to hold-off giving McGahee a larger contract before they see how well he produces in 2012.

As for whether he asked for more money or fired his agent over it or not is unclear.  Per McGahee though, he’s not planning on going anywhere soon.

Name: Chris Clark
Height, Weight: 6’5″, 305
Position: Tackle
Age, Experience: 26, 3rd Season
College: Southern Miss.

Chris Clark signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008 as an undrafted free agent before joining the Minnesota Vikings later that year.  After being waived by the Vikings, Clark signed with the Broncos and was active for eight games as a back-up offensive lineman in 2010.  Last season, Clark appeared in the final eight games of the season (officially starting in six), primarily on special teams.  Clark saw extensive playing time in Denver’s jumbo formations as an extra offensive tackle outside of the tight end (or offensive tackle) on the end of the Denver’s offensive line.  The Broncos used Clark mainly on running downs and he provided depth and experience to the Broncos’ trenches.

2011 Analysis: Clark was active for all sixteen games last season (playing in eight), and was featured on special teams.  Primarily used on offense for running downs, Clark was more useful in run-blocking then he was in pass-protection.  In passing situations, Clark was penalized twice and allowed one sack. Former Denver Broncos cornerback Perrish Cox has been acquitted of rape charges, reports PFT‘s Mike Florio.

When the jury couldn’t reach a verdict on Thursday following a short trial with a fairly simple set of facts, the signs weren’t good for the prosecution.

And the jury confirmed those suspicions on Friday.  Per multiple reports, Cox has been acquitted.

The alleged victim may now try to sue him for assault, but Cox will not be going to jail.  Neither the Broncos nor the NFL has commented on the situation and it is not known if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will suspend Cox for some or all of the 2012 season.

On the field, Cox had a promising rookie season in 2010, playing in fifteen games and notching 57 tackles to go along with fourteen passes defended and an interception.  Last preseason, Cox’s level of play decreased considerably and the Broncos released him amid the accused rape charges.

Cox may catch on with another team in the NFL, at age twenty-five he would be entering his third season.

The 2012 NFL Draft is quickly approaching and the Denver Broncos currently have picks in six of the seven rounds.  Per the Denver Post’s Jeff Legwold, the team’s selections are as follows:

Current draft selections:

1st round (25th overall) — own selection.

2nd round (TBA overall) — own selection.

3rd round (TBA overall) — own selection.

4th round (TBA overall) — own selection.

5th round (TBA overall) — acquired in Brandon Lloyd trade from the St. Louis Rams.

7th round (TBA overall) — own selection.

A few notes:

The Broncos’ may add to their six draft picks through trades before or during the draft and the team may be awarded at least one compensatory selection in the coming weeks.  The team’s fifth round selection from the Rams was originally a conditional sixth rounder which turned into a fifth when Lloyd caught more than thirty passes in St. Louis last season. The Denver Broncos will discuss signing potential free agents Peyton Manning and pass rush specialist Mario Williams, according to multiple sources.

If Manning is still on the Colts’ roster on March 8th, the team will owe him $28 million, which they are not willing to do. With Indianapolis prepared to select Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck first overall in the draft, the team is expected to release Manning within a week from today.

When Manning becomes a free agent, John Elway, the Broncos Vice President of Football Operations, and the rest of Denver’s front office will consider pursuing him, according to a source close to the team.  The team is unlikely to actually sign Manning, but they do have interest in the veteran quarterback.

Position: Tackle
Age, Experience: 24, 2nd Season
College: Miami (Fl.)

Orlando Franklin was selected in the second round (45th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos after a decorated collegiate career in Miami.  Starting in all sixteen games last season, Franklin helped send running back Willis McGahee to the Pro Bowl after Denver’s offensive line helped the Broncos rush for a franchise record 2,632 yards on the ground.  Franklin proved to be a run-blocking machine but struggled at times in pass protection.

Former Denver Broncos’ draft pick, Perrish Cox, is on trial for sexual assault in a district court in Castle Rock. He is accused of having sex with a woman who was incapacitated, and he faces two years to life in prison if convicted of this and related charges.

According to news sources around Denver, Cox and current Denver Bronco Demaryius Thomas met up with this woman and one of her friends at a local club. The accuser had previously dated Thomas, and eventually went to Cox’s apartment (whom he shared with current Bronco Cassius Vaughn) where the woman fell asleep.

The accuser was not certain that she had even had sex until she proved to be pregnant, and at first she thought that Thomas was the father. DNA testing proved that Cox, however, is the father, after Cox denied that he had intercourse with her.  Click here to read the rest of this entry »
