AFC West

It’s hard to fully appreciate a division title given the way they won it, but they won it nonetheless: the 8-8 Denver Broncos are the 2011 AFC West Champions.

It’s the first division title and playoff berth for the Broncos since 2005. As fourth seed, Denver will host the fifth seed Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) at home for the first week in the playoffs.

And while we’re all still reeling over the loss to the Chiefs this afternoon, and the way they lost three straight to back into the playoffs, and the way Tim Tebow and company are playing utterly dreadful offensive football, remember that the Broncos were 4-12 only a season ago.

No team in the AFC West more deserved to go to the playoffs than Denver.

“No team in the AFC West more deserved to go to the playoffs than Denver.”

But that’s because no team deserved it, at all. Someone had to go and it’s like we drew the short straw or something, because everybody in the division was JUST good enough to get near .500.

  • Cool Rob

Amen! I think Tebow would even Amen to that!

  • coach

Just a suggestion from a successful coach.  Give Tim some short passing attempts. Such as, drags, quick slants, quick outs etc.  He cannot learn as fast when you run all go pass routes continually.  More play action, and see if he can boot at 8 instead of boot at 9 all the time.  Use more trip sets with a hip, all being quick ins and outs/or crossing patterns/ or get x on a go route out of that trip set.  Would like to see the Broncos season continue to the goal.

  • anthony33

Very disappointing.  All we had to do was get a win at home against a team with a losing record and we lose.  Yes, we’re going to the playoffs, but does not feel like we earned it.  Pittsburgh will kill us.

Hate to say folks, but TT is not the answer.

  • King

Lets all be praying for Kuper.  I just hope and pray he didn’t get a career-ender today.  He’s a big loss for us, no doubt and I’m sure he’s scared right now.

Our O looked bad as a whole today:  No protection, drops, and poor QB play with little protection.  Tebow looked beat-up after the game.  The good news is that we won enough in the middle of the season after sour-puss was benched.

I think Tebow failing is a Broncos management self fulfilled prophecy. How can you expect a QB to have confidence when nobody in that office has confidence in him. Tebow is a struggling rookie QB, but Fox doing him no favors putting him in so many obvious passing situations. Play calling and decision making was absolutely horrible today. Lot of good QBs have came thru Denver since Elway left and theyve been made out to look bad. Maybe Kyle Orton today was a sign. It’s not the QB, its the system. I dont think the system needs an overhaul…. but it does need to be tweaked. When you run 80% of the time on 3rd and long and 90% of your passes are on 3rd downs, there’s a problem. I understand conservative…. but this was painful to watch.

The Broncos staff needs to man up and take responsibility for these games. If they pass the buck off on Tebow i will lose a lot of respect for every single one of them. You would NEVER hear another team used their rookie QB as a scapegoat like Denver seems to be doing. Denver got rid of Cutler, got rid of Orton… now theyre gonna get rid of Tebow…..  I guess if Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers ever comes to Denver, then we will get to evaluate the Denver coaching staff, until then…. blame it on the QB.

The Broncos were 4-12 before Tebow.

  • Audi

Yeah, its Fox’s fault that Tebow is bad.

  • Audi

    Tebow is not a rookie………

  • King

That’s the best you can do, obviously.

  • King

I agree.  I have lost all respect for John Fox the last 2 weeks.  It is professional courtesy to never publicly be discouraging to a team member/employee.  I don’t care if in your own mind you absolutely cannot stand someone you ALWAYS publicly keep that under your hat and deal with it behind closed doors.  He is a fair weather friend.

  • King

No.  It’s just that Fox is not an offensive-minded coach.  He has pretty much admitted that himself in past interviews.

  • King

There are many reasons why we lost, and Tebow definitely gets some of the blame.  But our play calling is ridiculous.

If Norv Turner gets fired this week, we should seriously consider hiring him for O.C.

  • crazykid

he hasnt played a full season yet…

  • Roshon2411

Less career starts than both Cam Newton and Andy Dalton.  I think it’s OK to judge him as rookie.

  • SuzyQ

    Tebow is a fullback facryinoutloud!

  • broncofan

The pass routes you mention require speed and timing, something Tebow has not demonstrated. TT biggest problem right now is he can not read the defense after the snap. Decker was open 2-3 times today and Tebow didn’t even attempt to throw the ball his way.

I don’t disagree with you on Norv Turner.  In fact I mentioned that in a post last week.  Don’t think it will happen, but that would be a nice pick up no matter who the QB is next year.

I agree that some of the fault lies with the play calling, but I still think TT is miles away from developing into a quality NFL QB.  At this point I would call it a long shot at best.

A lot of us have said from day one to let TT play to find out what we have.  What we have is what I mentioned above.  This team needs to draft or acquire a quality QB to compete with him.

  • anthony33

Disagree on the protection.  In most cases TT had plenty of time to get rid of the ball.  I think Simms correctly pointed out that he was so afraid of the TO that he wasn’t throwing the ball when receivers were open.

Hope Kuper is okay… that was just awful.

  • Cardinalfamily

im a big bronco fan but what you said is the honest to gods truth. i hate to say it like that but you cant run from the truth,

  • King

“Denver’s receivers aren’t getting open and aren’t all-stars” –Rodney Harrison.

We need to improve in all areas on Offense.  As usual though, the QB gets too much of the blame when things go badly, and too much of the credit when things go well.

We are seeing what happens when we pay too much attention to defense in the offseason.  We have a way to go, as we can’t be great after just one season of McD being gone.

  • flbronc

Kuper is out for the season/playoffs with a dislocated ankle.

  • anthony33

One more major concern… Von Miller has had exactly one tackle (zero today) in the last two games.  I know he’s hurt, but seems like there is something else going on there.

  • flbronc

unfortunately this one is on tebow.  we had two legit opportunities to kick field goals and he fumbled on one drive and took a sack on third down that took us out of fg range.  provided prater makes them (the fumble instance was well within his range, and the sack one would have been 57ish) we are up 9-7.

we cannot win against an average (or better) defense if we can’t pass.  from what i have seen from tebow is he went from horrid to decent(but still right below average) and has now regressed to where he started.  after seeing the body of work from his 11 games this year and three last year, i am unconvinced that he can become a good passer.  he trended toward improvement for a couple of weeks, and i was encouraged.  after the last three outings, i feel like we need a more conventional qb.

talk all you want about the play calls.  he still needs to be able to make quick reads and put a catchable ball out to the receivers.

as for next week, i think it’s going to be ugly.  pittsburgh is going to play agressive, use different fronts and confuse us with where the pressure is going to come from.  they are number one overall defense, number one against the pass and number 9 against the run (ratings from espn based on yds allowed per game).  their offense may be hobbled a little without mendenhall, but they average 20.8 points per game(per espn.com).  i dont see us putting up 21 on their defense with our offense in the state it currently is.  honestly i hope we can score to keep from just being shut out.  three points against kansas city in what the team termed a ‘playoff’ and a ‘must win’ doesn’t lend me much confidence.

  • King

Loss of use of a thumb is a HUGE deal as a defender.

  • me

um Tebow isnt a rookie. that tune has gotten REALLLLL old. and the reason they have to run so much, is because tebow is a LOUSY passer. plain and simple. Tebow cant even complete a simple timing route whatsoever. thats not the play calling, its th guy who is throwing the ball. and Elway never had a problem throwing a football. Tebow does. many times our receivers were open today and Tebow wouldnt throw to them because they werent 20 yards wide open. and stop with the Elway comparisons!!!! Tebow isnt even close to Elway in ANY fundamental department when playing the QB position. Cam Newton is a better QB then Tebow as evidenced by his great rookie year. Tebow is a fail. we backed into the playoffs despite Tebow. not because of him.

  • me

yeah yet prototypical QB’s like Dalton and Newton come right in and produce numbers. why? if Tebow is so good why cant he?

  • Anonymous

I am not used to being depressed after learning the Broncos are going to the playoffs.  I hope the coaching staff can figure something out quick.  Tebow needs to man up, stop being scared, and relax.  He should get married this week so he can lose his virginity.  That would loosen him up

  • roshon2411

I didn’t say he was good, just said that he could be judge as a rookie.  Playoffs, 7 Wins, after taking over for Orton.  I’ll take that this season, give him a full off-season and the start of next season and see if he improves.

  • 2Champ4

Time for Brady Quinn to get a shot to start. Tebow time is done. He has looked shakey lately and is not putting up points. If Denver expects not to throw the ball against Pittsburgh, going to be a long day. If you’re not confident to call throwing passes with you’re QB than he should not be playing. I was a tebow fan and was cheering for him but…Quinn should get the start over Tebow next week, I believe gives us a better chance to pull of an upset.

  • King

Steve Smith, AJ Dalton are two very big reasons.  They’re not drop-a-holics.

  • King

    Edit: AJ Green

  • Steve

John its time to have some guts and make a Qb change to Brady next week.

  • Dragonborn

Fact: Denver wins the division, they will host a playoff game and nobody expected them to do that. You can call it luck or whatever you want but it does not matter. Ask the Raiders the Chiefs and Chargers that.

Fact: You can say whatever you want about Tebow, good or bad but the fact is that Denver is a mediocre team with tremendous limitations and the plain fact that they are in the position they are is a tremendous over achievement. They would have never been in this position without Tebow.

Fact: Regardless of what happens next McCoy is the worst offensive coordinator in the NFL and if Turner gets the ax in SD Elway should be on the phone the next second offering him the job. The best friends of a young inexperienced passer like Tebow are his tight ends, his running backs out of the backfield and his slant receivers. I did not see a single passing play involving these options today. Run, run and throw long on 3 and 10? Are you kidding me? Simms was saying all day long that you have to call plays like that to get ANY passer in a rhythm. McCoy has an one page playbook.

Fact: As good as the Bronco defense played today they have not caused a turnover in the last 3 games and they have not pressured the opposing QB hard enough to make any significant mistakes.

Fact: Fox is playing a style that wins games when you have the lead. Someone should tell him that when you try to come back from behind you cannot be running the ball all game long and ask your QB to win it on the final drive. And when you have one of the most clutch kickers in the league you kick long field goals and take the points you are not afraid to lose field position.

Final Fact: Broncos won the division with an inexperienced QB who had to learn on the job, a dinosaur Head Coach, a moronic Offensive coordinator, a defense that ranked 24th in the NFL, Miller with a hand in a cast, Dawkins out for importand games, an injured RB, trading away their best pro bowl receiver and after starting 1-4. It is amazing to me that most of you are crying like you did not enjoy the ride.
Do I need to remind you that NOBODY gave us a chance in hell to win the division in the begging of the year?

Do I need to remind you that there has been no playoff Bronco games since 2005?

Do I need to remind you that anything can happen in a single game?

Let’s kick the Steelers a$$ Sunday.

    GO BRONCOS!

  • crazykid

I was just about to post the same thing. Just think, Pittsburgh spends countless hours watching film on Tebow, only for Quinn to run onto the field and pass pass pass. Then Tebow swaps in in the 4th quarter and we run run run. Its the last game of the season, might as well try it!

  • Dragonborn

Even better…let’s see what Webber can do. Get out!

  • http://twitter.com/Sinfix Anthony

The truth is…… Tebow took over for the 1-4 Broncos and went 7-4…….

better than ANYONE expected. so why are we complaining?

  • http://twitter.com/Sinfix Anthony

So the Broncos were 1-4 , Tebow takes over and goes 7-4….. yet we’re acting like someone pissed in our corn flakes…….

anyone care to explain to me exactly what the expectations were???????????????

  • http://twitter.com/Sinfix Anthony

if someone told you Tebow was gonna be 7-4 at the end of the season when he took over @ 1-4, you would have been overcome with joy…… i understand it sucks that we’re limping into the playoffs…. but come on….. this fair weather fan bullshit is getting old.

  • Dragonborn

It is amazing, isn’t it? I was in the stadium today and I will tell you I have never seen more ignorant fans in my 12 years of being a season ticket holder. Pathetic.

  • Tktimoteo

    GO Broncos!!!

  • RT

The play calling is disastrous.  I kept some stats.  In the first half, Denver had 12 first down plays, and they ran on 10 of them.  One of the passes was the flea flicker.  In the second half, Denver had 15 first down plays, and ran on 11 of them.  They were 11 for 12 in the second half, but at the end of the game, desperation time, it was pass, pass, pass (when KC expected it).  I’m not sure how Quinn can do better.  Is he better at handing the ball off than Tebow?  I thought Tebow did a great job of handing the ball off yesterday.  Fox needs to be fired immediately. This is an embarrassment.

  • Tom9798

First, I’m happy the Bronco’s made the playoffs.  There are plenty of other teams that did not, and I’m sure if the 8-8 Chargers or Raiders had made it, they wouldn’t be whining about their shortcomings.

But to assuage the situation, maybe a little satire is in order.

TT’s friend “up there” didn’t care for his picture on the cover of Sports Illustrated, so he decided to teach TT a three week “lesson in humility.”  The game to face LSU in the holy moly bowl was cancelled, due to the lesson being learned.  So much for photo-shoots.

The Defense fell short again.  Their job is to keep the game manageable.  Allowing the Chiefs to score seven points was unacceptable.

To atone, they must keep the Steeler’s to zero points, and score a safety.  This way, with a comfortable 2-0 lead, the pressure will be off the offense, and one can assume that they will match the three points they scored Sunday, for a commanding and convincing 5-0 win.

This will serve notice to all these teams that score 40 to 50 points a game.  They have to, because their defenses suck.  Heck, the Patriots let the Bills score 21 points; then they got off the bus.  The Packers had the winner of the “who can eat the most cheese” contest come in and throw 14 touchdowns for 2,000 yards; he had to, to beat the Lions.

Have faith; we made it to the dance.  Heck, you could be Philip Rivers today.

On a serious note, all the best to Chris Kuper for a speedy recovery.

  • Bryan

Less career starts, yes but TT has played in more career games.

I’m on board with him getting ANOTHER full off season but I would still have a back up plan in place.

  • flbronc

if you give him another year the back up plan is barkley.

  • flbronc

i made a joke about the same thing with the people i was watching… i told them that our best offense would be to trot tebow out for the typical three and out, then play brady the rest of the game.

  • Virginiabronco

    ridiculous

  • flbronc

i have expectations of some semblance of offensive production.  our offense has been in decline for the past three weeks.

the play calling is roughly the same as it was during our win streak. so either it is a problem executing or defenses have ‘figured us out’.

i have expectations that a quarterback needs to complete passes.  i expect wr’s not to drop passes they should catch.  i have expectations that oc’s need to make adjustments.  i have expectations that we should beat bad teams- buffalo and kc are bad teams.

  • Btiecke

Who would of thought the Seahawks would have beaten the Saints last year in round 1. If the fans believe the team can do it, then they can. Remember the first meeting with the Chargers this year. Fans went wild. Its a full team effort. To put the blame on TT is stupid. He fumbled, ya, but why did our offensive line break and let a man through. When the Broncos won the SB’s, my grandma could of thrown as good as E dog, and ran as good as TD. The O-line was the best. We need that again. Our D is ageing. We need to look into improving that the most. #1 defense trumps #1 offense. Not always, but usually. Ravens, Bucs
