With all of the NFL’s Week Six Sunday games over and the trade deadline looming, the Denver Broncos‘ front office should be expecting some phone calls.
Bronco receivers Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal are both in the final year of their respective contracts and have both requested to be traded. If a team calls — and they will — the Broncos may make a deal before Monday’s 11:10 a.m. practice session.
The question is, which receiver will be dealt, and what is the asking price? It seems unlikely that the Broncos would be willing to trade both receivers, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility.
At the moment, it appears Lloyd is the more likely of the two to be traded, with Denver asking for a 3rd to 5th round selection. Reportedly, the New England Patriots were interested in Lloyd but have backed off, while the St. Louis Rams are the front runners to close a deal.
The Rams offense is now under the control of Josh McDaniels, who has connections to Lloyd, so a trade to St. Louis would make sense. Mike Klis of the Denver Post has reported that the Carolina Panthers and Tennessee Titans are also interested in Lloyd.
It is not clearly known what the Broncos are asking in exchange for Royal, but ESPN‘s Adam Schefter reports that Royal has drawn just as much interest as Lloyd. One team that has been thrown into the conversation is the Washington Redskins, who are coached by Mike Shanahan. Royal’s most productive season came in 2008, his rookie year when Shanahan drafted him in the second round of the draft.
Behind Lloyd and Royal on the Broncos depth chart are receivers Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas (two arguably up and coming stars), journey man Matt Willis (who has been one of Tebow’s favorite targets since the 2010 preseason) and return specialist Quan Cosby. Undrafted rookie Eron Riley, whom Tebow connected with well during the preseason, is also on the practice squad.
If either of the receivers are traded, we suspect it will be Lloyd, and possibly soon. The NFL’s trade deadline is at 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday afternoon. Let the bidding begin!
