We know who was cut — now let’s look at who’s left.
The Denver Broncos‘ 53-man roster, before more potential waiver wire transactions Sunday, breaks down like this (via DenverBroncos.com):
- Three quarterbacks
- Three running backs
- One fullback
- Five wide receivers
- Three tight ends
- Nine offensive linemen
- Five safeties
- Four cornerbacks
- Seven linebackers
- 10 defensive linemen
- Three specialists
Most notable are the linebackers and wide receivers. Five wide receivers is not a lot, especially with Demaryius Thomas among them and coming off an Achilles injury (the Broncos say he has been cleared to practice this week. Still, surprising to not see more depth there). Meanwhile, seven linebackers seems a member high, but D.J. Williams and Nate Irving are both hurt.
Also worth noting (or maybe not worth noting at all) — on the team website’s depth chart, Tim Tebow is listed above Brady Quinn as the 2nd team quarterback.
On a side note, the Denver Post has an interesting blog post on how many players are left from Shanahan/McDaniels eras.
Meanwhile, the Broncos are surely scouring the waiver wire, especially with the likes of S Brandon Meriweather and WR Brandon Tate of the Patriots reportedly becoming available Saturday. Denver has the 2nd claim to any player cut from the NFL’s 31 other teams.
We’ll have a more in-depth look at the 2011 Denver Broncos’ roster following Sunday’s transactions.
