There can only be one… when it comes to being Number One.

But it when it comes to being Number Two, two is just fine.

That’s head coach’s John Fox take on the Denver Broncos quarterback situation this season. Following reports that Brady Quinn had all but locked up the No. 2 QB spot, Fox told reporters after practice Tuesday that the team doesn’t plan on naming a true Broncos blue No. 2 until the season starts. And even then, their roles will mix.

“[I]t’s going to be [one or the other] when the season starts, just because of the new rules,” Fox said. “It’s a competitive disadvantage to announce that from the standpoint of different strengths and weaknesses by particular quarterbacks.”

The new rules to which Fox refers allow teams to dress 46 players on game day without penalty. The old rules allowed 45, with teams allowed to designate one additional player – a third-string quarterback who could only play with certain restrictions. Those restrictions have been removed, and all 46 are considered “active.” Expect Quinn and Tebow to dress each week.

All this really means is that the Broncos plan on using Tebow in specialized packages while keeping Quinn sidelined as the primary backup (as a primary backup should). I expect Quinn to win the No. 2 “spot,” but that’s rather meaningless. Barring a Kyle Orton injury, the Broncos’ “No. 3” QB will get more snaps this season than its “No. 2.”

Meanwhile, I’d like to see the Broncos list both as No. 2. On the web site. Introduce the world to Tibrady Quibow. Make Tim Tebow’s name change to “Brady Quinn” when you hover over it with your mouse. Make it happen.

This has been what Fox has said all along, it is the Tebow haters/lovers, and the media who had to have a number two QB named…well now maybe everybody will realize it is number two to argue about it.

  • stuckinraiderland

I would also like to be listed as the No. 2.  I think there should be an option for this.

  • areferee

Very insightful, Kyle.  It seems clear that Tebow will likely take more snaps than Quinn, unless, like you said, there is an injury… (or stale play.)

I believe being listed as No. 2 QB is much more important to Quinn than Tebow.  Tebow just wants to play and learn and has less ego to assuage than his counterpart.  He also has more to learn, (and contribute), on the playing field rather than the practice field.  (And more to prove!)

A QB trade is still a major possibility.

Does Fox even run the wildcat?

  • AtomicLeo

Translation: We plan to use Tebow in goal line packages and I don't want the opponent to game plan against that.

  • TJ

    Tebow needs to go away.

  • jdkchem

The same Tim Tebow who thought he was entitled to the #1 QB spot and stated as much in his interview with Woody Paige has less ego to assuage than Quinn?

  • jdkchem

    Only on playstation.

  • herc_rock

Yeah.  I'm not seeing a conservative guy like Fox running a bunch of gimmick packages just to get Timmy some snaps…

Even if his article was quoted accurately, which Tebow himself said was out of context, this doesn't sound anything at all like entitlement to me.

From Woody Paige at the Denver Post:

“My dream, since I was a young boy, of being a starting quarterback in the NFL seemed to be coming true,” Tebow told me as we stood outside the Broncos' locker room.
“Then, I felt like it was grabbed back away. . . .” He paused and
didn't finish the thought. Instead, he finished his quart of milk.

As long as he takes Orton with him.

On Madden I use Orton as the main QB and use Tebow in certain formations (like goal line) and on like 3rd and less than five. A lot of times I'll do play action and either hit the TE or FB (Fells/Larsen) in the flats or run if the OLB bails.

  • King

Many said the same thing about Cutler.

You have to remember though that McCoy is still the OC, I don't think Fox will mess with the offense much, so that's probably part McCoy's choice (using or not using Tebow in certain situations).

  • tkulaga1

Fox is a wimp. Name the QB and get on with your job man.

  • tkulaga1

I agree with your statement but Fox must think every other coach is stupid and that is why he lost his other job as a coach!

I read the article and out of context or not he Tebow came off badly.

  • herc_rock

True, but Fox is still the HNIC though and I don't remember the Panthers running a bunch of wacky stuff when McCoy was Fox's OC for nine years or whatever it was.

  • Jhmielke

Give the kid a break. He works his butt off and I am sure nobody came into training in better shape, but he's still a kid and lacks polish. I don't know if he will prove himself but he'll give it everything he's got.

  • VegasBronco

But John Fox, who carries the clipboard on game day?
