John Elway has clearly stated that the new Broncos regime is all about transparency. Despite the the complete openness of the front office, the minds of Bronco fans are extremely convoluted when it comes to the quarterback situation.

Elway’s recent comments are not helping the situation at all. According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, John Elway has recently stated:

“We’re always looking for that guy,” Elway said, when asked specifically about the so-called “franchise quarterback of the future.” “We may already have the guy who can pull the trigger and win us a championship someday. We may have him. We don’t know. We believe in Tim [Tebow] but he’s not there yet.”

Now, I’m not trying to stir the pot, I’m just calling the events like I see them. It is hard not to be a little suspicious of the front offices’ intentions with all the workouts they’ve held with potential high round quarterback prospects like Jake Locker and Blaine Gabbert.

Like I’ve said before either the front office doesn’t believe at all in Tim Tebow or they’re trying their damn hardest to fool everyone into believe so.

What do you think Bronco nation? Are all of these stunts illusions or indications?

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

They are planning to drat a quarterback, *gasp!* why is that so hard for everyone to comprehend?

  • MrEast

Probably because the Broncos drafted Tebow in the first round last year, extended Orton's contract giving him a $9 million salary this year, and acquired Brady Quinn at the cost of Peyton Hillis and what will probably be a 5th rounder.

Also, quarterback sadly isn't the most pressing need for the Broncos. Drafting Marcel Dareus, DaQuan Bowers, Nick Fairley, Von Miller, and even Patrick Peterson would be filling a better need and taking the best player available versus drafting a quarterback.

Even, if the front office isn't considering a quarterback in the first round selecting one would be a waste because of the few amount of draft picks Denver has this year.

  • MrEast

This is just annoying! We have so many holes on the team that QB isn't a priority! Our whole draft could be all defense and we still have greater problems on that side of the ball. Let Orton, Quinn, and Tebow compete!

Before QB we must have as new starters: 2 DT, 1 ILB, 2 S, 1 CB, 1TE… Not to mention quality backups in virtually every position (most glaring at RB, and O-line & D-line).

  • Kawike

If the new Broncos regime drafts a quarterback in the early rounds, it shows that they are not much better than McD was. I just can't see any legitimate reason why they should ignore defense one more time, especially after that debacle last year. Draft the best defensive player available.

  • Open Minded

I love how John Elway put it. He doesn't state that he has found his QB and doesn't state that any of these QBs are worthy of attention. All he suggests is that he is always looking and considering the QB. This is justified as QB is more important than any other position. He is right to do so.

If he feels that Payton Manning is in this draft class he should pick him up regardless if there are 1, 2, 3 or even 10 QBs already on the roster.

  • areferee

We have a coaching staff, consisting largely of new personnel. We have a new Executive VP that is learning on the job. We have a General Manager with a new job description. We have a team, whose record indicates they are second worst in the league. And we have an experienced Head Coach that is assessing EVERY player on the squad.

It seems prudent to this observer that every position is open to change and that the available players in the draft must also be assessed thoroughly. EVERY position, even the ones the fans deem untouchable…AKA: QB!

When all indicators are that we are one of the worst teams in the league, then anything and everything must be considered. El-FoxX and Company are doing just that! It seems to me that, as fans, we are stewing and fretting without just cause. All possible draft choices are being considered, and all possible trade scenarios are also being assessed. To do so correctly, it takes information. It takes a close look at all possible combination of players, trades and potential future free agents.

Speculate all you wish about the foolishness of their actions, or time being wasted, but for me, they are looking at every possible circumstance that will improve the knowledge of the team and its future success. I'm worried only about the lack of agreement over the CBA, and the foolishness of the stance both sides have taken, and not the lack of agreement between our ardent supporters.

This isn't “blind faith” I'm espousing. It's confidence. It's been a long time since I've felt it.

(Now, if they draft a quarterback, we'll talk!) :-)

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

This is a good point; it would be great if they were to actually say something like that. If I am the PR director for the Denver Broncos, I am coaching them to basically say, “Look, we don't plan on having the #2 overall draft pick ever again. So if we have an opportunity to pick up the next Peyton Manning or Adrian Peterson we've got to grab him regardless of need.”

  • Paradisimo

So what happened to the “choose the best player available regardless of need” argument that was being thrown around a couple of months ago? If Elway and Co. truly think that Gabbert is the best player on the board at #2 should they pass on him out of “need” in spite of that fact that we all know it's going to take 2-3 years to right this ship? Just sayin…

  • td30ismvp

If they trade back they could pick up a QB or whoever they choose, they are exploring all options instead of sitting on the few players they could get at #2. With no CBA it was brilliant not to trade Orton since Tebow cannot be coached until there is one. Checking all possibilities and going into the draft with knowledge of all available talent should make us feel better not worse. When they say a draft is deep at a position that means you could actually pick later and still get good value, if it is thin then you need to pick the best player at that position early. Or maybe they just don't have anything else to do until the next pro day, I like they are keeping all options open.

  • TheTroglodyte

Nobody thinks Gabbert is the best player at #2. That is just silly talk.

  • GreatGooglyMoogly

They are working their plan nicely. If brass has “Bronco Nation” in an uproar wondering what they are going to do, just imagine what the other GM's are wondering. We will get another team to trade up with us, securing another pick. We will then trade KO for a mid-round selection. Once the slots are in place, we will stock up on defense and win the Ravens way while TT progresses into the star that he will inevitably become.

Now let's just get the owners and players to agree on a new CBA so that we can start getting excited about football again!

  • stuckinraiderland

Okay, at this point, I have no idea what to make of anything. Except this: please, please, please do NOT draft Jake Locker. He is one of the most wildly overrated college quarterbacks I've ever seen. Whatever the hell else happens, PLEASE do not draft that dude.

  • MrEast

I was stating that drafting Gabbert doesn't either qualify for “best player available” or even “drafting for need”, thus being a questionable move.

  • MrEast

    Most convoluted transparency ever right?

  • stuckinraiderland

No kidding. I can't tell anymore if it's actual communications by the organization, or if it's all the attempts (not so much by this site, really, but everybody else) to try to piece together some kind of narrative out of them… but the end result is that I'm confused and I'm done trying to understand. Just don't draft Jake Locker and I'll be cool.

  • Paradisimo

That's easy to say from here but if Elway and Co. (who will have had a close-up look at EVERY potential prospect) have him #2 on their board I can see the logic in going that route. I actually have a pretty high level of trust in Fox and Elway, especially when it comes to QB, so if they think he's that good there might be something to it. Either that or they're just trying to hype him up in the hopes that Carolina takes him at #1. Time will tell.

  • Hansen

So they are “…always looking for that guy”. There are only a handful of teams that AREN'T doing this. So the Broncos are doing what 80%+ are doing – GOOD! No need to get all worked up over this statement. Plus, Elway & Co. know they need more than 6 picks. If looking at QBs is being used to bait another team to move up then good, let them deal for the right price. The way I see it, they are playing the “business of football” from the #2 spot.

I like what areferee said, “It takes a close look at all possible combination of players, trades and potential future free agents.” Very true.

For the sake of discussion, how many of you would go into cardiac arrest if some team offered a bunch of picks for Dumervil? (See Hershel Walker/Dallas Cowboys)

  • Mdizl

All Elway is saying, is that he is keeping his eyes open. Look at Aaron Rodgers and phillip rivers. If Elway sees something in one of the QB's in the later rounds, he will pick them up and sit on it. Let them develop and dump Brady quinn.. Its not that hard to pick up a guy in rd 7 and develop him into aaron rodgers in a few years.

  • Masaga91

i still believe we should draft patrick peterson…

  • areferee

    LOL! Total myocardial infarction…

  • Hansen

I thought that question would result in some degree of hysteria.

  • MrEast

Why do you have a high level of trust? Fox stuck with Jake Delhomme despite how awful he was for the past three-four seasons. John Elway has been a VP for zero drafts.

Financially it makes no sense to have three high paid QBs on the roster. If Denver drafts a QB 2nd overall they will be paying premium for a position that they're not necessarily hurting at.

  • MrEast

People are forgetting that if this draft class was actually any good Gabbert would be lucky to go in the 2nd.

  • Kinglouie

Come on. Why is this so difficult.

    1. They are evaluating the possible value of the position if one of the QB needy teams want to move up. If you are going to sell a possession without knowing its' value, your a chump. If the Panthers go anything other than a QB, and one of those QB's is head and shoulders above the rest, the value of the #2 pick increases greatly when considering a position swap.
    2. Tebow ain't ready. And to say there is question if he ever will be, is by no means a stretch.
    3. If you are looking at the 2d coming in one of these QB's, you'd be a fool to pass him up. “…sell the house, sell the car, sell the kids…”

  • Hansen

I was actually referring to my question regarding Dumervil (see above).

  • CJ

i like kapernick or however you spell his name.

He has a strong arm and good mobility and he wont be a high pick.

  • The Mascot Army

Great post, this is my sentiment exactly. They are either idiots (who arent happy with a rookie qb who outperformed the other rookies last year), or they are very clever and this aint their first rodeo (sans Elway).

  • Captnmusic

The Denver Nation wants TT as their Quarterback. If he's not, the stadium just mightr be a tad empty this season. Lets use our available picks for players we need like a good running back, some good defensive lineman, some good linebackers, some good offensive lineman. Maybe we can trade Elway in the 3rd round. Let's build a winning team.Let common sense prevail.

  • ReverendofRock

Has anyone considered the possibility that Elway and Co. are using the “we might be looking for a new QB” line as a ploy to see what kind of offers they can get for Orton, Tebow, or even Quinn, that could result in a trade and/or a few additional draft picks? Hmmm?

  • ReverendofRock

Although I would agree that we need to use our picks on defense, I don't think the “Nation” goes to games to see Tebow. We're Bronco fans, Tebow or not!

  • MrEast

I was referring to “looking for that guy” part. The front office should look outside of this draft class for him.

  • MrEast

People have considered it and even if they really are doing that, it's a huge waste of time at this point. There's not a lot of time before the draft. You don't fly to players' pro days and invite them for private workouts just to set up smokescreens. The juice isn't worth the squeeze.

  • flbronc

i have a couple of thoughts going through my head on this.

    1. could the coaches be going to these pro-days saying they want to check out the qb, only to be quietly checking out other players that are there on the down low- now i am not talking for the second pick, but for later round picks?

    2. we started the qb process with the bigger names- now are working into guys projected in the second or third round. could it be that we were looking at one of the deeper qb's all along, in anticipation of drafting one after a trade involving orton? i say this because i think that the staff is willing to move forward with tebow- but they may want to hedge their bet with another young qb. if we can get good value in terms of picks/players (pending the cba) for orton it makes sense to trade him- if we do that we go ultra thin at qb.

On another note, i hope that the elfoxx starts to look at dt's and lb's that are projected late first- if there is an unexpected run on an offensive position- qb, tackle, or someone grabs a rb or wr that wasnt expected- it is going to push some of those depth picks from the first round into the second. we need to have done our homework and be ready to grab them if it happens.

  • flbronc

i get you on private workouts. although private workouts come to you, so your lost time is minimal. other than time directly with the prospect.

you have to remember that there are other players at a college pro day. for example (because i am familiar with fsu)- ponder threw, but rodney hudson and ryan mcmahon were also available for scouting if you wanted to see ol's… markus white is a later round de prospect, kendall smith is a mid round lb prospect… all were working out and doing drills for scouts- not just ponder (who was the biggest draw).

  • The Mascot Army

NOBODY can recognize the second coming of a QB. QB stud projections by the best of the best are at best 50%. Anybody who would sell the house, kids, car etc over a coin flip is an idiot.

  • The Mascot Army

I think the “Tebow isn't ready” comments are intended to keep other teams from thinking that Orton is just an extra player that could be gotten cheaply. Think fantasy sports, the garbage offers you have when you have an extra stud sitting on your bench.
I think you guys are right about their scouting QBs for later rounds in case they trade Orton, as well as scouting the other players at these events.

  • Paradisimo

Because Elway is a hall of fame QB and John Fox (who wasn't the GM in Carolina) hasn't shown me anything yet that makes me question his football IQ. I really doubt the Broncos would keep all 3 QB's on the roster if they draft one with the #2 pick. If they do move on a guy like Gabbert I would see them keeping Orton around for a year to mentor him and then trading Tebow for a 1st/2nd round pick (assuming there's a new CBA) or using him as trade bait later on to shore up the positions that they weren't able to fill in the draft. Also keep in mind that free agency wouldn't start until AFTER the draft if there is no CBA in place so the Broncos would know their exact free agent needs before it even begins. I guess I just see more than one route to improve the team.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I tweeted that to Elway last week, “Peterson in the first or we walk.” haha

  • Paradisimo

Considering that Rodgers was taken 24th overall and Rivers 4th overall I'm not sure that analogy has merit. There are only two top flight QB's in the league (Brady and Romo) that weren't taken in the first round. Developing a late round QB is anything but easy and damn near impossible.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

I think the Orton smokescreen is BS. Kevin Kolb is CLEARLY available and according to Andy Reid they've received, “A few,” inquiries, including at least one first round offer.

  • Clevername

Tim Tebow was drafted with the “3 year project” handle affixed. That's one reason it wasn't a good pick for the Broncs. It would seem to me, in lieu of a reasonable trade, they need to stay on course. I haven't heard anything out of the team that indicates they're doing otherwise.

  • denverfanindallas

it's all a joke.. we have the second pick! we are trying to get teams to bit on Orton, or worry that we actually want a qb so they try and trade up… “We are always looking for that guy,” seems like a total dodge of a question to me…

If Tebow gets traded, we will only regret it. there is no good end to that situation. the one player that has excited a dismal franchise is now, “not that guy?” he works harder than anyone in the league, trading him will give him one more “they told me I couldn't do it” on his commercial… do we really want to be that team? Cause we are looking for “that guy”…

I don't buy it for a second, Elway's transparency is as thick as those teeth…
