A couple of days ago Ian Henson chimed in on the Jake Locker private workout. Perhaps we’ll soon hear his thoughts about Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who will also have a private workout with the Broncos, who were just recently at his pro day as well.

Many fans are quick to dismiss these workouts merely as smokescreens or strategic maneuvers like the naming of Kyle Orton as the starter, or John Elway‘s neutral comments about Tim Tebow. However, Ian had a couple of valid reasons not to dismiss these efforts by the Broncos front office, one of them struck me particularly.

I can’t imagine that any of these three men want their time wasted, there is definitely at least some type of interest on the part of Denver.

I’ve said it many times before, the Broncos are in critical-mission-mode with no margin for error. If the “ElFoxx” trio is spending time working out highly touted quarterbacks then there just might be more to it. If the trio is really trying to sneakily increase Orton’s stock then they really are dedicated to it.

Or perhaps it really just is a smokescreen or a strategic maneuver to increase Kyle Orton’s stock, who knows? All I know is that this somehow be time well spent, because the Broncos have a lot to do in what little time is left before the draft.

Maybe they truely are interested. Or maybe, they want to trade down so they are hyping up the top quarterback prospects. Just a thought.

  • http://twitter.com/dxmanning Joshua Manning

Happy April Fool's everyone!!!! (This is a joke……… Right???? They can't be looking for a QB.)

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

If either Orton or Tebow is dealt it automatically takes Denver from having the best quarterback situation in the league to mediocre at best. That could be replenished immediately by drafting a quarterback in the first round.

Crazier things have been done on draft day, no one in the world thought we'd jump up to take Cutler in 2006… Or Knowshon Moreno for that matter.

  • Paradisimo

When you have a team as bad as the Broncos were last year it probably doesn't hurt to look at ALL of your options for improving the team. If drafting Gabbert and trading Tebow and/or Orton helps make the overall team better then you have to at least consider it.

  • MrEast

    Wishful thinking at best.

  • stuckinraiderland

I have to disagree– there is probably only one position on the field we can be sure WOULDN'T be improved by a high draft pick this year: quarterback. None of the QB prospects have any shot at bettering either Tebow or Orton for a couple of years. And we need help at almost literally everywhere else.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

    Perhaps.

  • Rcsodak

How does drafting a qb in the 1st round “increase” KO's value?

  • WhidbeyBronco

    Agreed. @Rcsodak

How does making a show of shopping for (/ showing we feel we need) a QB increase Orton's value? Makes me think we don't have faith him… makes him LESS valuable.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Denver looking for a QB through the draft creates an immediate market for Orton and/or Tebow. Denver's not going to draft a QB unless they're willing to get rid of Orton or Tebow or both.

As far as increasing his value, that's done via the leaked information that teams like Minnesota and Seattle are interested, but created via the search for QB prospects.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

It shows that he's available without saying it. Avoids the Jay Cutlery of the early McDaniels days.

  • areferee

Jay Cutlery…hilarious. Is that because McDaniels forked it all up?
(I'll just chalk it up to an I-Man spoonerism.) :-)

  • WhidbeyBronco

huh? Name Tebow starter and we say the same thing without saying that we need a QB cuz they both suck!

Wouldn't it be better to say “We love what Orton has PROVED he's capable of doing but we're lucky enough to have Tebow as our future and would be better served trading KO in order to bring us talent in other areas of need”?

    I mean if that's what we're saying.

Instead we don't offer anything except the signal that we have confidence of NEITHER of our QBs. We benched Orton for Tebow last year but don't love Tebow enough to name him starter so we'll name KO starter for now cuz he's all we have and maybe check out a QB in the draft… How does that make KO more valuable again?

  • anthony33

Based on what they need, this does not appear to make any sense whatsoever.

Perhaps they think one of them will be there in the second round. It may also signal a plan to trade out of the 2 spot and get 2 first rounders. Then again it could mean a definite trade of Orton or Tebow (highly unlikely).

Again, does not seem to make any sense. They should be looking at defensive tackles, ends, linebackers and offensive lineman.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Wouldn't saying they love Tebow/Orton take him off the market completely?

You don't go to a singles bar to express that the current girl you're seeing is NOT available. You go to that singles bar and people are confused with your arrangement with the current girl you're seeing and they need to ask…

This brings us to the current state of things. She's/he's not available, but you need to ask.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

The Broncos are targeting a guard and/or a running back in the second round. At least with one of their second round picks.

No player is being traded prior to the draft, mainly because it won't be allowed, but after a new CBA is signed a player for player trade will be possible.

My friend, thank you, I don't often get appreciated for my metaphors or metafives around here, HAHA.

I think paradismo hit it right on the head. Denver was one of the most worst teams in the NFL last year. I think their just crossing their T's and dotting their I's so that they make the absolute right decision. I mean, they went to every defensive pro day their was and they've worked out or are going to work out most if not all the top DL prospects. So you could make an argument either way. If you really evaluate it, some experts have called Cam newton a bigger stronger faster Tebow because of his work only in the spread. He knows just as much about a pro style offence as tebow did coming out of college. So whos to say they don't get rid of one for the other because of the added athletisism (granted Cam doesnt have quite the work ethic tebow has). I'm not saying THIS WILL HAPPEN. Im just saying that they need to look at what ultimately makes them a better, more well rounded team, and I for one am very impressed at how they are doing their due diligence.

On another note, i just had to ask Ian. Do you have insider info or are you just predicting that they're gonna go after a gaurd or a running back in the 2nd round? I understand the thinking behind the gaurd selection but not the running back. why waste a 2nd rounder on a commodity thats very plentiful, even with the CBA issues? I mean, say they do take a running back in the 2nd, and then the CBA is worked out, and all of the sudden the running back postition erupts in free agency as it usually tends to. then they just wasted a 2nd rounder on a running back when they could have taken a very solid LB or corner and further enhance their dreadful defence. Gaurd makes sence. It really, always makes sence. you can never have to much QB protection, even though i still would trade back down into the 1st and snag another high quality DL with one of those 2nd rounders. Then I think they should grab a guy like Casey Mathews or Martez Wilson(if he's there) or if there isnt any viable LB's, maybe a DB like Shilo Keo or Shareece Wright. I just think theres way to much Defensive talent and theres way to many defensive needs to even think of any offensive prospects.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

My friend, I cannot consciously claim to have insider info, but Denver is scheduled to have private workouts with Kendall Hunter (RB) and Danny Watkins (G); neither one of those have above second round grades on my (or anyone else's) draft boards.

I'll do my best to keep everyone up on what I think and what I am learning.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Also you mentioned tight ends, they had a private workout with Portland State's Julius Thomas last Wednesday.

  • mikebirty

I just don't understand this. Unless they're asking these QBs what it was like to face Dareus, Fairley, Bowers and Peterson then it just doesn't make sense.

    Bring back McDaniels!

  • areferee

Bo Derek and I rate that one at a metaten!

  • Vince_marine

Maybe we're looking at him for another team who is looking to move up to take him. When we took Cutler, we never looked at him but Fisher from the Titans did. We took him based off what Fisher saw.

possibly looking at gabbert, locker to create artificial demand for them, thereby increasing their draft stock by having hof john elway 'seriously' look at them… this makes our second draft pick a more highly valuable spot to trade in to- it gets you in front of buffalo and arizona who are at least somewhat likely to take a qb.

not saying that is the end all be all reason for our workouts, but if you are playing the draft chess match, this is a potential reason.

  • flbronc

i would like to see us get rodney hudson. he should be there for our second second rounder, and possibly even our third.

  • wyrob

    +1

The best QB situation in the league? Come on now you can't be serious. Manning(s), Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Rivers, Romo, these are good situations. The Broncos not yet. Look at all the players in the draft and don't dismiss the QBs even with the 2nd pick. If Gabbert has the potential of one of the guys above then you have to consider him. I love Tebow's attitude but don't know about his upside–he has a long ways to go to be mentioned with any of the top quarterbacks.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

By best QB situation I mean talent wise as a whole. However, I was wrong. There are better QB corps in the NFL.

  • TheTroglodyte

I'm sure there are a few reasons for us to look at Glaine Babbert but drafting him as a potential QB isn't one of them.

Love him or hate him, Tebow isn't going anywhere. Too much time and money has been put into him and he has too big of a following (equals profits) to trade away so we can draft another rookie to sit and learn for at least 1 year. He especially isn't going anywhere before Fox has a chance to evaluate what Denver has in Tebow now that he has some experience and a 2nd off-season to improve mechanics.

The only way Orton is going somewhere before camp is if he starts pouting again about how he isn't willing to play backup QB or if Denver gets EXACTLY what they want in trade for the exact player they want to pick up on draft day. He may take phantom sacks and have the worst pocket presence in the history of the NFL but his value will skyrocket as a team or two like the Vikings realizes they might as well not even play with Joe Webb behind center.

By that time, Fox will know if Tebow is his guy or not too.

  • Laramiefan

what does Tebow need most ? Protection ? next He needs the opponents score to remain low so he can win . Defense ? Draft good defense . Now trade Orton for great protection =mediocrity becoming great . Sounds crazy but , try to set up someway of a thought that produces a winning team with what the Broncos will have available . Also please remember a super running back was available for both the Broncos win in the superbowls .

  • The Mascot Army

Cam Newton is no Tebow, and there is a serious crazy vibe from him. Anybody who has watched every Tebow game for the last 4 years knows what he brings to the table.
And he may be anecdotally quicker than Tebow (shuttle times say another thing), but that doesnt mean Cam is more athletic-he is definitely not stronger than Tebow.

I am hoping the Broncos are simply trying to raise QB draft stock.

  • Sports-Glory.com

I am excited for the draft and I can't wait to see who Denver picks. I don't like the QBs in this years draft and I think we should wait for Luck to come out. http://sports-glory.com

maybe the hof qb thinks the qb's we have are crap? maybe the hof qb knows that these qb's cant make a play when it counts? maybe the hof qb knows tebow is a mess? maybe the hof qb knows orton is a backup on most nfl teams? lets get real here.

So…………. who wants to ride the Patrick Peterson train with me?

  • Masaga91

    i want :)

  • Burnetty 4 Broncos

    I'm in on that train…

  • Hansen

So I understand the Vikings (#12 overall) are interested in possibly moving because they are interested in Gabbert. I am really bored at work and thought this would be an interesting topic to kick around. Your thoughts?

  • Hansen

I meant to say “moving up”.

  • Paradisimo

That still doesn't mean you shouldn't do your due diligence and look at all possible options. I'd rather they look at as many prospects as possible and make an educated decision than to just assume a position is fine and ignore it.

  • 12508

give em the 2 for the 12 and i belive they have a pick in the 40s
