Denver Broncos management, pressured to be heard from following the team’s disappointing 2-6 start, finally relented to an interview with The Denver Post during the bye week. Owner Pat Bowlen, as is his growing custom of late, let COO Joe Ellis do all the talking.

The fans aren’t happy. They know it, they hear it. They’re not happy either.

Basically, they gave a whole lot of nothing.

But that might be the point. After a handful of quotes and apologies, the only real nugget of interest may be something Ellis wouldn’t say (emphasis added).

Ellis said Bowlen is in good health, but the team’s owner since 1984 has chosen to step back from the spotlight and let Ellis speak for management. Ellis added that Bowlen is confident McDaniels can turn around the Broncos, but he stopped short of guaranteeing the coach would return next season.

You expect a vote of confidence, as meaningless as it might be. You expect the stock “Josh McDaniels is under contract through 2012.” You don’t expect a no-comment when asked about next year.

Josh McDaniels was just put on notice. Publicly.

I agree.. I have tried to buy into McD but you can't deny how much worse we are. I can't remember a time where we have commited so many stupid penalties like too many men on the field, not enough men on the field…. every game!! Hillis gone, and really Maroney??? It would take me all night to cover the coaching mistakes. I can't believe some of these guys think McD has nothing to do with this

  • LevonZevon

Yeah, lets postpone dealing with the front-seven another year while endlessly trying to find a secondary that can cover for 5-6 seconds on every play.

    That's the ticket, riiiiight.

Then, Josh's offensive acumen will kick-in and the league will suddenly stop being able to throttle his everything-within-18-yards offense and unsurprisingly-nonproductive running-game.

And don't forget some more non-receiving TE's to better execute Josh's max-protect scheme that has worked wonders (for the opposition).

When am I going to hear someone say: “since this season is already ruined, why don't we actually test what happens when sending five pass-rushers 6-8 times a game (instead of once or twice only)?”

If it works and we stay close in games and end the season the way Cleveland did under Mangini and Rob Ryan in 2009– while finally allowing DJ Williams to approach 10 sacks– perhaps management will see that personnel doesn't have to dictate pressure.

The Falcons “Gritz Blitz” proved this for a mediocre team decades ago. But most coaches just run Over-2 or Cover-3and try to out-smart their opponents on offense (since three-quarters of owners think the way Bowlen does re: preferring offensive-minded head coaches).

Of course, most teams don't make the playoffs 8 out of every 10 years like the Giants, Steelers, Ravens and Eagles.

And those four teams prioritize the d-line and pass-pressure.

  • LevonZevon

Well, no coach would say, “its not my fault, blame the players.”

So, that's empty rhetoric by a coach whose already too savvy and plugged-in about how he's perceived (and foolishly and pridefully lets it limit his coaching options).

It also makes his point when constantly reshuffling the offensive-line and the blocking-sleds with legs he calls Tight Ends. To wit, its only when I find the right combination that my flawless schemes will shine through.

Those average fans don't understand the complexities of each formation and yada-yada-yad is what he wants to say.

But Josh doesn't understand that obsessively avoiding risk and constantly retreating and covering-up saps the life and morale from an already injured and talent-free team.

Teams like ours need inspiration and something to rally around. They also need a chance to show what they can do on game-day (instead of demonstrating knowledge in the classroom).

Brandon Lloyd may not have shined in the classroom dissecting whatever McDaniels wrote on the chalkboard. But when given a chance, he produced.

But someone here defending McD actually pointed to Lloyd as an example of Xanders and McDaniels player personnel acumen.

Balderdash. If they knew what they had in Lloyd, they wouldn't have kept him benched last year when he would've been more succesful opposite Brandon Marshall and his rolled coverages and double-teams.

If they knew what they had with Lloyd on game-day, they may have drafted a TE or another linemen instead of Eric Decker at WR (an offensive coaches favorite position to constantly add to).

Aaron Hernandez was available in round four. Linemen higher rated than Zane Beadles were available when we picked the former Ute.

LaGarrette Blount was twice available for nothing. As was Torain and Hillis and Lichtensteiger.

And yet still we do the same tired coaching. As McNiedermeyer refuses to see the faults in his own decisions.

Why else would they bring in a different blocking TE– a former LB from Baltimore, no less– rathere than a TE who can catch downt he seam.

Joe Ellis doesn't understand football. Otherwise he and Bowlen would have gone to the opposite extreme of what Shanahan did on defense. And, on offense, they wouldn't have swallowed Josh's malarkey on situational-football.

The truth is that Bowlen was looking for a coach to find a football reason to avoid paying Cutler and Marshall. Which is his right (and probably s smart move).

But McDaniels and Xanders have largely squandered the Cutler picks. And by wasting them on Quinn, McBath, Bruton and Smith, he exhausted my patience with those who'll do everything but the obvious: build up the front-seven and be patient.

There is no substitute and there is no other way to avoid being 98 pound weaklings. We could have started this three-year process in the 2009 draft.

Now, I'm not sure if McDaniels will even start it in 2011's draft (as he'll probably have another complex series of trades to make it difficult to trace what picks ended up in what players).

He's arrogant, he won't let a first-round QB throw the ball and the results speak for themselves.

And save us from the orange-colored glasses on Orton. I thought we got rid of Cutler cause he wasn't a winner. Well, Orton is no Pro-Bowl QB and anyone who says he is– based on misleading stats– is kidding themselves.

    Peyton Hillis has been.

Josh has never been mature enought for a head coaching position. His ego always gets in the way. He's running this team as if he were running his fantasy football league. He will neve be a “winner” I just can't believe that the Bronco's are not firing him. He gave away one of the best running backs in Peyton Hillis, where's the Bronco's running game now Josh?? LOSER!!!

This would mean we had a COACH. We don't. We went from the 3rd ranked offense when McD took over to worst in the league. All he had to to was improved on defense and we were playoff bound. Let's not lose sight of the complete incompetence that is on display. If we are lucky we will finish 6-10. As a season ticket holder that is unacceptable!

YEAH, EAT YOUR HEART OUT MCD….GO HILLIS! GOOD FOR THE BROWNS, SORRY FOR US BRONCOS FANS…

  • sherri steck

I'm don't think we need to be his training ground, we've struggled enough in the past ten years. He got off to a bad start and it's been downhill since then. I don't think the fans have enough confidence, enthusiasm of affection for McD to put up with this much longer

  • Deepheartedriver

this whole mess started when Bowlen's ego got the better of him and he decided to fire Shanahan… at least with shanahan you knew the Broncos would be competitive… in fact, they were only a few defensive players away from being great…instead, he hires a rookie coach who has never been a head coach before and who clearly can not manage men… its an absurd mess and it begins with the idiot at the top who decided that it was “his” team and he wanted change… change is not always for the better…
    what a moron

  • 12508

Get rid of Xanders. How can anyone coach this team? How about Bill Parcells for the GM ?

  • Robb Large

Once 'he' came and tried to make Bronco-football and 2nd coming of New England…I dis-owned the Broncos. I am born and raised in Colo and refused to root for my team because of MrD and his micro-management. If you've ever worked for this kind of coach…you would want him out just as bad as the guys who play under his 'ego-command'.

  • Robb Large

    anthony33…ever heard this:

If you always do what you've always done…you can expect the same results you've always got.

Keep McD another year and we might not win even one game…then people will really be laughing at the lack of ownership in Denver…

  • MidWestMike

You could not be more correct! He had the offense all he had to do was build the defense. What an idiot!
