Champ Bailey

The Denver Broncos will have to start training camp without three veteran playmakers on defense. Cornerback Champ Bailey, safety Renaldo Hill and defensive tackle Marcus Thomas have all been placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, the Colorado Springs Gazette reports.

The Broncos have not announced any of these moves, but the Gazette cites two unnamed NFL sources in their report. One source also claimed Thomas was placed on the list after he pulled a Montrae Holland and failed his camp entrance physical Thursday. The reasons Bailey and Hill were placed on PUP were not known.

Players placed on the PUP list can return to the active roster any time before the start of the regular season, at which time they must either be activated or placed on the reserve/PUP list. The reserve list sidelines a player for six weeks before they’re re-eligible for roster activation.

The team’s first official training camp workout is open to the public and starts at 8:45 am Friday.

And the hits just keep on coming…

Champ may actually benefit from being able to sit out camp. Hill’s a vet and I don’t really think it’ll effect him much unless McBath plays considerablly well through camp. Disappointing that Marcus Thomas won’t be able to though. I think he could be a valuable 3-4 lineman if he could get his stuff together.

Some good news though: A lot of 1st rounders signed today and ours will likely come tomorrow judging by the positioning of the others. Other teams that drafted RB’s are def waiting for us to see what Knowshon gets. Glad to hear Ayers’ contract is pretty much solved and should be a matter of resending it tomorrow.

    NateH47-
I agree… Marcus thomas is definitely the most dissappointing… I had high hopes for him this year. He has got to get it together.

I’m not sure that I buy it. This could be a loop hole to bring in two more players.

I might be mistaken, but I think a few days ago McDaniels said everyone passed the physical and was happy that everyone had been working out during their break. I agree with T-money, this feels like a loophole to get more camp bodies.

Orakpo just signed for 12.1 guaranteed and Josh Freeman got 10.1 so I think that makes things a little more clear for Moreno and Ayers deals. Should happen any time now.

Let’s see you do back-flips now, tubby.

He should have stuck to his usual offseason workout regimen of nose-garbage and handguns.

If I read the DP right they don’t have to sit out for six weeks,
“Players had to pass a physical and a conditioning test on Thursday in order to be able to practice today. Players on the active PUP list can be removed from it at any time.”

I remember McD saying that everyone passed their physical too. I think it is a ploy to get more people in camp. start camp with 3 guys you are confident in on the PUP list, opening 3 porter spots for camp. New England user this loophole strategy every year.

    roster spots*

TD30 that is true. The rule, as I understand it, is that a player can be taken off the PUP list at any time up to the first regular season game. If they are still on it then, there is a mandatory minimum six week PUP status before they can be removed and be eligible for game time.

Marcus Thomas didnt even pass his physical. yeah he is REALLY trying to become a starter this year. this “amazing athlete” (which means nothing if you cant actually play football) just showed how motivated he really is. but im sure its someone elses fault right everybody?
