Saying he’ll “take care of it,” new Denver Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels had this to say regarding the Jay Cutler situation on the eve of the first team meeting under his tenure:

“I would like to talk to Jay before we go on and start to discuss some other type of alternative. In the last couple weeks, we’ve been all about trying to communicate and resolve his unhappiness with what happened — which we understand — and that’s been our direction.”

A glimmer of hope on the horizon? The Broncos won’t talk trade until they talk to Cutler again. I have my doubts. If a conference call and a face-to-face meeting didn’t take care of it already, what is there left to say?

I would take number….3, as well. And this is why.
Lets talk about this meeting that Josh wants to have with Jay, one-on-one. He said that he wants to speak with Jay one-on-one, before Denver will consider any other alternatives. Why would this happen if Denver does not plan on keeping Jay and solving this problem out? You got the entire media saying that Jay’s days in Denver are over. But are they really? Josh is obviously still trying to mend this. He would not ask Cutler to have another meeting with him, and ask him which team he would love to be traded to. He wants Jay as his QB, as well as the rest of Denver. And think about this:Is this meeting between Josh and Jay a forceful act of Bowlen? Bowlen has only made one statement on this situation to the media, so do you think that he told Josh that he better go have a one-on-one meeting with Jay, and make sure he gets it solved? Bowlen could have easily told Josh that he has to solve this with Jay or there will be punishments. You just never know….But what could very well make this true is that what else could this meeting possibly be about? And Jay is under contract for three more years. He knows that if he gets out of Denver, he will most likely go to Detroit, or Cleveland. And I would bet my left nut that he does not want to play for either of them. So, for what my opinion is worth, I think when Josh and Jay get this meeting, with no Bus Cook, Josh is going to tell Jay everything that he wants to hear. I really think now, its not an option. There are no deals that would get us a QB that has anywhere near the skill set of Jay. All the talk is Brad Quinn. But is he the answer? No. It took him a couple of years to finally get some starting time in over Derek Anderson….The one season wonder. And they only reason why Quinn got put in their last season, is because they would get money if he took 50% of the snaps that year, or something of that sort.
And Jay has stated that he will attend the mandatory stuff, as soon as that all starts. This next meeting between the coach And Jay will be the one that gets everything resolved. (knock onwood)

    I’m a #3 guy too.
I’m afraid it’ll cost us Jay though.
If so, it’s going to be really hard to forgive them.
I love the memories Dakota. I have so many of my own.
    Come on hope.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

And Bowlen fired Shanahan because the lack of wins. He did not fire one of the best football minds to have another coach come in and wreck his team. He hired McDaniels to win football games, and take this team to levels it has not been to in a couple of years. How do they do this? By keeping Jay Cutler. They both know it. Jay knows it. Bowlen is not going to take draft picks for Jay, and start all over again. He wants to win, and wants to win now. Losing anymore is not an option. Everyone knows that the only way Denver truly takes all their potential to the max is by having Jay and Josh on the same page, connected at the hip, winnning games.

  • Gregg Boot

Wake up Denver; Jay is a primadona; the guy isn’t that good, but thinks he’s the talk of the NFL. Get over it dude, there is no loyalty in the NFL; REALITY check from the rest of the working world… it’s a business just like anything else. You are not a Demigod and at the end of the day your expendable, just like anyone else. Did you think you were some rare talent, something that comes along once in a lifetime. There are plenty in line to take your crown, so get used to it, stop being a girl and show us; talk is cheap.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

    Gregg Boot

Tell me one quarter back out there that would be a realistic chance of us getting, that is better, or even as good as Cutler? Think about that, than you tell me. Ya the NFL is a business like everything else. In any business, you always keep your best employees, right? Well guess what. He is that employee that you definitly want to keep.

  • OC Bronco

Joe- Have you ever run a business?

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

I have not ran a business, but I would say that the smart thing to do is to keep all of your good employee’s over your bad ones, correct? You would rather fire someone who does not, or can not, help your business out in the best of ways. And you want to keep the employees who you know will try their best and give you the results you want. Correct? And I’m sure that Jay Cutler gets filed under the type of worker that will give you results.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

    So #3 it is Pat!
    We want em both!
    Jay? You hearing this?
Josh? Make it work! Both of you!
Folks on NFL NETWORK keep saying it’s not fixable but hell I’ve friends that started out as enemies. Winning fixes everything.
oh yeah, & money…. alas Jay, that better not be the issue!

  • Gregg Boot

Joe; any employee who’s mouthing off to the brass is going to get his bell rung; your never above the law mi amigo. I say shut up and show me. I get tired of people talking all the time; if someone questions your skills then take it to the field. I’m no player in the NFL, but when I get challenged I don’t go Hollywood and cry foul; everyone gets dished. The best way to deal with adversity/character questioning is going out and getting it done consistently… period! i didn’t get to where I am in my career by calling out who wronged me; I brought it to them with results. the guys not a bad QB, but quit the TO act and get to the business of showing us your worthy.

  • Nicole

    Joe,
What a brilliant concept! I never thought about it that way. Jay will be at camp one on one! Maybe Bowlen did say something…I have a feeling you just hit the ball out of the park!

  • http://www.google.com T-Money

    I’m going with 3.

from what i’ve read they both need to put a tampon in (no offense ladies) and face each other without anybody else.

    I like Culter
    I like McDaniles
I hate the fact that they can act like adults.

  • http://www.google.com T-Money

And If McD care this much about Culter… Get you ass on an airplane to Nashville STAT. That in itself would mean something to Cutler.

  • Mc_P

Gregg Boot….you’re spot on. Joe – I like you passion. One comment though, in business you get the right people on the bus and the wrong ones off. The fact is that this is a different bus now. Yes he is a very good QB for his experience and as of “TODAY” is the Broncos best opportunity at that position. But there is a tomorrow and we never know who is around the corner that is right for the new team/system. McDaniels might be new, but he was part of a system that no player was bigger than the team. However in this case Cutler sees himself as the next coming of Elway….not so fast Jay! Jay should cowboy up and play some football and more importantly be a PROFESSIONAL.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

    Nicole
Thank you! I really think this will all get settled out. I still have a good feeling that Jay Cutler will be in a Denver Bronco uniform next season.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Hunter

Trade him! Cutler, B. Marshall and Scheffler to Lions for C. Johnson (stud) number 1 and the number 20.
Option1:- draft QB number 1, 12 and 20 def player.
Option #2- draft QB, def player at 12, trade 20 for extra picks to get 2 more def players
Option #3- get the Boston College nose guard #1, draft Sanchez or Freemon #12 and take another def player at 20 or trade the picks for an extra 2nd and 3rd

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

McD lied… My question is so what? Every coach lies , players need to be lied to and be told how great they are when in reality their marginal. During Free Agency is when teams lie the most to potential signee’s. Please get over this crap that “OMG he lied , OMG OMG OMG ” Thats the only thing that in this situation is childish.

I like McD , I like his attitude. I dont prefer Cutler’s pouting but thats just me. Funny Cutler wasn’t that upset when Dre Bly was let go, Winborn, or Webster. Considering he plays for his “teammates” that was strange.

McD is a badass he will get this fixed, with or without Cutler.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

MCD dont need give in at all, if you get past this and get us into the playoffs next season without Cutler =O , you are instantly the mastermind version 2.0.

  • NathanH

Bus Cook’s in Buffalo, though its likely for Scheffler.

  • ssc

i was initially down on both but mostly irritated that mcd mishandled the situation. now i’m leaning toward being disgusted with cutler/cook, esp after reading peter king’s interviews with mcd. send cutler, scheff, and a pick if necessary to cleveland for quinn and rogers (not likely) or williams. too bad az already signed warner — coulda sent cutler/marshall for leinart/boldin/defender. i don’t see marshall lasting long in the mcd regime or offense. whole mess is a bummer.

  • broncoNM

If its true that McD doesnt want draft picks for Jay than i think it will be hard for any team to offer enough. The lions could offer the #1 overall but then the broncos would have to spend 30mil guarantee on an unproven rookie. Might as well give Jay that money. Assuming McD even wants Brady Quinn the browns could offer him and rogers but i have heard that cleveland would take a huge cap hit. If this trade happens it will probably take 3 teams to get it done. If the Roy Williams trade got the lions a 1st, 3rd, and 6th than i think Cutler would be worth more than that. Cutler is a franchise QB and if McD is not interested in draft picks its gonna be hard for a team to trade enough for Cutler’s services. Cleveland is the only team that could offer a QB replacement so i think they will be the only serious suitors. But i still think it will cost Cleveland more than they would be willing to spend. i.e. Quinn, 5th pick, late rd pick. If a team offers up enough it would be a monster deal… the more i think about it… there is a good chance Cutler stays in denver. A lot of teams want Cutler but few could actually afford him.

  • Nicole

    ssc,
Your entry has made alot of good points, but there is one problem: there were only 4 people in that room. Just because Mcdaniels said it doesn’t make it true. I read that interview and it sounded as though he really has been cought off guard by all of the media requests. Bottom line, if he wants to speak to cutler-he’ll do it and stop telling everyone what he plans to do. Bowlen has a private plane, there are no excuses to see each other. Corner him at his house and have at it. By the way, the rumor mill in Dallas is buzzing about Cutler-don’t be surprised if Jerry Jones comes out with him-after all, Shanahan is literally a done deal. Unlike Bowlen, when Jones wants something he is highly determined to get. All of this could have been eliminated if Bowlen had stepped up to the plate and been the owner that he needed to be and ended it once and for all. He’s says he’s disappointed in Cutler…well I’m disappointed in him.

  • ssc

@nicole: i’m with you that we only got one side from mcd (and probably a distorted story from cook and “sources”). but i do believe as you say, mcd seems kinda surprised by how things are blowing up, which goes back to him not understanding the sensitivity and not handling things correctly from the start. i disagree with you about mcd and bowlen being able to talk to cutler if they really wanted to: i don’t think it’s a good option for the coach or bowlen to be running to TN to bow at cutler’s feet. that sends the wrong message to the team. if mcd and bowlen are leaving messages for cutler that he’s not returning (which is believable considering cutler’s consistent history of petulant behavior), then there’s nothing more the front office can do other than manage the media/fans (which they are mostly choosing not to do).

i think it’s telling to step back and think about who can fix this quickly. cutler can fix it by agreeing to talk to his bosses and accepting the reality of NFL business practices, but he won’t. his bosses can fix it by kissing cutler’s butt, but they won’t. which of the two sides is being unreasonable?

i don’t see mcd wanting to replace one hard-working but emotional gunslinger (cutler) with a slacker gunslinger (romo). i do like the thought of both texas teams being subsumed by broncos.

what’s crazy to me is why kc wouldn’t offer up cassell plus something for cutler. they could add a lot to the package and still end up way ahead given what they paid for cassell (some portion of a 2nd rounder).

i’m still hoping for some package deal for quinn/rogers. cutler is >> quinn for sure, and i’d rather have cutler sans this mess, but quinn is smart, hardworking, and has a personality and history that could handle the denver scrutiny.

  • JRODZ

I’m going CRAZY! “Bills fans going Bonkos for a shot at Cutler” “Jets salivating at the chance of trading for Cutler” – These are just a small sample of today’s rumblings. Having legs or not, this is CRAZY! All this guy had to do was fix the damn defense! In no time at all, he’s on the verge of sending a sure a key as any we have to getting another championship in the next five years to the competition! McD…Pull your head out. What’s “Best” for this organization is spelled, “CUTLER.”

  • broncoNM

If it is all about the money than why dont the broncos re-do Cutler’s contract. Give him a little extra booty for this season and if he makes the pro bowl again this upcoming year then he gets the big bucks this time next year. If cutler makes the pro bowl again and has a similar season i think he is deserving of a top 5 QB contract. He has the incentive for this year and if he performs well the money will be waiting for him in 2010. Cutler’s numbers should be huge in McD’s system and by this time next year we could have a 26 yr old 2 time pro bowler with a long term deal.

  • Nea1

I am new here, but have been watching the Broncos for 26 years. Needless to say, I like the ideas the new coach has put forward, but I think he went to far with Cutler. If you are thinking a trade, best thing to do is not lead the QB you have now on. Jay was there for two weeks with him going over things, not a word from McDaniels. Jay has said many times, it wasnt the trade that pissed him off it was the lying and denying that made him mad. And when you go to meet you here nothing but I wanted Cassell and I am not sorry about it, what would your reaction be? Why play for a coach that doesn’t want you? Jay wants to be here, if not he wouldn’t care. I will always be a Bronco fan, I have even turned a die hard Steelers fan(husband) into a Bronco fan with my passion for the team, my kids love them. Watching Jay play with the team was exciting, something I haven’t seen since Elway. And while there will always only be one Elway, Jay is the best I have seen in along time. He is young has lots to learn but man the potential we would be throwing away is incredible. Both need to grow up and act like real men. It’s what’s best for the TEAM.

has any one noticed since shannahan left and McDaniels came the broncos organization has gone crazy.this never would have happened if shannahan wasn’t fired.i decided not to give up on the broncos when shannahan left ,but now if Cutler leaves i just might.

This is the vilest, most idiotic post from you yet! What? Utter nonsense! OMG! you’re losing your mind. “Jay’s pouting” (in what way is he pouting?) is worse than the lying coaches “need to do”?
Did you forget your pill this morning Dee?
Why can’t he just go ahead and lie to Jay and say HE’S good & we want him? That would fix everything. Oh wait, that wouldn’t even BE a lie!!! But he says it to tired cast-off free agents… What’s he really trying to do? antagonize Jay like Jay said?
You make the point that Mcd’s F$cking up! He doesn’t even bother doing his job with Cutler by lying to him! what a joke you haters are.

  • Nicole

    SSC,
Another great post! But I will unfortutely have to disagree with one small portion. It is standard practice with alot of teams to visit players to solve problems-Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones will fuel the jet, wine and dine, and do whatever it takes to get that player. He did it with Deion Sanders and literally stole him away from the 49ers. You’re not catering, what you are doing is playing to win. See, Josh is new to the concept of playing to win but Jones is old school. He is tough enough to get a player and he will do whatever he has to. Case: it’s pretty much a done deal for Shanahan in Dallas (we will always believe that Jones had something to do with it). If Jones wants Cutler, he will get him. He will do whatever he has to. The thing that is so irritating about Pat Bowlen is his inability to show up and make hard calls. I don’t know if you had read a previous entry about Aikman and Switzer, but if you haven’t here goes: They clashed from the moment they were joined together- it was written on Aikman’s face all the time. Well, as time went on, you could cut the tension with a knife throught the tv, now they did win the super bowl, but a couple of days later Jones dropped the guy and this was his guy. Bowlen has to learn to step up and make those hard calls and stop worrying about whether the coach liked it He says that he runs the show-well do it! Put your foot down because there isn’t anybody out there available that could handle the schedule that you have. Sorry, but Brady Quinn is not the answer for this. Jones concept: he will not walk a franchise qb UNLESS he can replace him and Mcdaniels has provided the perfect opportunity. Always an ace up his sleeve to play. If Bowlen wants to walk his franchise qb, then go ahead, everyone will lose in the end because I don’t want Cutler to leave and neither do you. You’re not catering- you’re playing to win and everyone does it from time to time. NE may not come out and say it, but the’re doing a little of it. I’ve been in locker rooms where we have lost valuable people over stuff-it’s not nice. When you multiply that by using a new system and an unproven qb, trouble will start brewing. It will show that Mcdaniels will work out what is best for the team- walking a qb is not best for the team. Stop helping Jerry Jones so much (Romo has reached his critical year in Dallas) let him find his won qb again. Keep Cutler

  • ssc

@nicole: you make a compelling argument about sucking it up and doing what it takes to win, and i agree with you that bowlen needs to step it up. however, i think both of us would agree that your strategy only works when wielded properly. al davis is the easy example of what happens when an owner falls in love with players and meddles in football operations, but even jones provides a great example of crippling a franchise by undermining the coach: last year with TO and pacman?

at the end of the day, we also have to consider that this isn’t just a win-at-all-costs business. IMHO alienating the fan base and creating ill will with a dysfunctional organization don’t get wiped clean with a super bowl win. i loved the shanahan years even with the dearth of success in the later years, because the broncos were a class organization that was always competitive. you can’t completely avoid questionable-character moments, like the handling of plummer, or the failed crazy projects like clarett, but generally the broncos under bowlen/shanahan were a team you could be proud of. for that reason, i do blame mcd for initiating the cutler situation, but i blame cutler more for being a petulant child and refusing to cure the conflict, when really he’s the only one at this point that can cure it, short of bowlen/mcd upending the chain of command to cater to a star.

I’m sorry, you lost me somewhere in the middle of your rant. I get it you support Cutler , I respect your opinion. I will not attack you for your views. But hey you’re hurt and sad and need to direct your anger somewhere, I understand.

  • Nicole

    SSC,
great post once again. Unfortunately, I must disagree a little more. This is a business of winning at all costs-because it generates revenue. Jerry Jones will try anything once, but he has the guts to correct it. He is clearing the roster for Shanahan to come and choose his own people. Yes, Cutler may seem a little immature, but you know what: Aikman whined too! He said what he felt on t.v. and that was it. He called out players and we ate it up! Jones isn’t Al Davis, he’ll never let the Cowboys fall into financial shambles, but you’re in the process of plying to win and if that means using the jet…so be it. Don’t let this guy leave, make both of them suck it up and get on with it because once Cutler starts playing, the juices will flow and things will happen. Remeber: Aikman and Johnson didn’t care for each other;in fact, Johnson told him “I’m your coach, not your friend.” But he also understood that Aikman was his ticket to where he wanted to go and he would later on say that he respected Troy and called him a legend. Johnson had learned the value of bending, but not breaking and along the way he and Aikman became friends. Don’t give this guy to another team, let them have at it and in the end you’ll have your very own version of the BIG3 (cutler, marshall, and mcdaniels). CALL CUTLER’S BLUFF AND GET HIM TO WORK!

  • ssc

@nicole: ok, ok, i’m still not down with the bowlen/mcd catering to pouty cutler, but i’ll certainly concede that a QB and his coach can hate each other and still make magic for the franchise. look, i’m a big fan of cutler’s play (and i actually love his generally unflappable presence on the field), but if he turns out to be locker room poison (i.e. the antipathy towards mcd/bowlen spills out beyond the individual relationship), he needs to go. and in that scenario, getting a couple 1st round equivalents plus more (e.g. quinn/rogers/+) will make the parting somewhat palatable.
