I’m calling on my inner Woody Paige for this, and I’m writing an editorial on this past week’s debacle which has shaken the foundation of the league. As my fellow BT writer Jonathan Douglas aptly put it, a plethora of Denver fans are starting to lose that lovin’ feeling. My thoughts were this:

This feeling is because of the ambiguity surrounded by this whole situation, you’re not sure who cheated you. Was it Cutler who asked for the trade earlier? Was it McDaniels and Xanders who asked first? Why can’t Brandon Marshall stay out of cuffs? Why can’t Cutler meet with McDaniels? This drama never happened before. It’s not just one person’s fault, it’s a collective group of mistrials that are tearing apart at the soul of your fandom.

The truth is that this is Josh McDaniels’ team whether you like it or not. The fans may lose faith in McDaniels for even involving Jay Cutler in trade talks whether or not he was provoked to do so. However, you have to respect McDaniels in his attempt to control the team. McDaniels has put everyone on high notice that he is the boss, this is a business, and he’s asking you one question, as newly acquired Bronco Brian Dawkins says “Are you gonna do your doggone job!!!?”

I agree that it would be social suicide for McDaniels to trade Cutler, an exteremly ill advised move. However, it makes no sense to call McDaniels an idiot and to ask for his head prematurely. After this early hiccup McDaniels seems to understand now, even after the Vikings have shown interest, per Mike Klis. Perhaps he was a little to cocky after his Cassel situation last season, and knew what he was capable of on the coaching side. After all he knows more about winning lately than his understudies Rick Dennison and Mike Nolan. What always intrigued me about him was that he was fervent in stating that he wasn’t an offensive coach, he was a football coach. McDaniels is here to put together a football team that is here to win. The difference between him and the other Belichick underlings is that he was taught in that atmosphere, the rest learned at other places and used their coordinator positions primarily as stepping stones. McDaniels is going to take away the best of New England and bring it to Denver, every new coach does it this way, just look at Gary Kubiak, hell even Bill Belichick himself brought the Bill Parcells mentality to New England. This is just something fans have to get used to, don’t worry the Denver Broncos are not a transmogrification of the Patriots, keep in mind Mike Shanahan brought over a wealth of knowledge from Bill Walsh and George Seifert.

My question to Cutler is, when are you going to put all of this to rest? I understand you’re a franchise quarterback and you have performed more than admirably in your seasons here, but everyone has a price. To pretend that a price tag doesn’t exist is just simply arrogance. Franchise quarterbacks have been sent away before, just ask Drew Bledsoe. Cutler hasn’t won anything of significance, not mainly his fault, but the bottom line remains the same. If Jay continues to refuse to mend his relationship with his bosses then eventually he should be let go, because he’ll just be the next Jeff George. In the real world if your boss treats you unfairly you usually have to suck it up, why is Cutler any different? It’s not like Cutler has been the most chummy guy to McDaniels. Between not being available to speak for awhile, then possibly asking for a trade after things don’t go your way, and then becoming upset once the opportunity comes around, how is McDaniels supposed to interpret that relationship? You are Josh McDaniels’ player, he can do with you as he pleases.

This is the McDaniels era. All Denver fans can do is hold their breath, hope that men can be men and realize who they’re really working for… us.

Also, stay tuned for my post-combine mock draft.

    Jordan C ,

what do you think we should do draft wise, I think you were a fan of Rey prior to the combine if I’m not mistaken?

  • Colorancher

Draft: Malaluga or Cushing first rnd. This would be best. DJ williams can play inside or outside . Malaluga at 260lbs. would be a franchise linebacker. I also think Cushing has the same potential with a better work ethic.

  • broncoNM

I just read that we were in the running for Jim Leonhard. I wish we would have landed him. That would have added depth and Competition at the safety position which was one of our weakest positions a year ago. Im more than happy with hill and dawkins but they are 30+ in age and injuries could always be an issue. You can probably pencil in dawkins as the starter but i wouldnt have minded seeing leonhard and hill battle it out in camps.

  • Jordan C

DJ is a tackling artist, not a sackmaster. I really can’t see him anywhere but on the inside or on another team, unfortunately.

That being said, I might take Rey in the second round, but I think that there are bigger fish to fry – d line, an heir to Champ, OLB in case Moss or Doom don’t work out

    RIchard –

People skewered me for suggesting that the Broncos draft an o linemen in the fourth or fifth round, but I definitely think that it’s a necessity. The Broncos were really lucky that they didn’t have the o-line injuries that they did in ’07 (Harris, Hamilton, Nalen, etc.).

They have Steiger and Polumbus, but I have no clue who this Murray guy is. Plus, Pears is now on the team that shall not be named (I didn’t like him much anyway).

  • jcampb72

Newsflash!! Our offense isn’t overated. How is it overated, we had 7 running backs last year. The only reason why we didn’t score that high is because we are the worst in the league on special teams. Look it up. If we had better field position we would have scored more points. Its simple logic. Also, our Defense sucked ballz. In all those games were playing from behind, hence the ints and shitty offensive play. It’s demoralizing when you HAVE TO score every chance you get. Think rothlesburger had to score every chance he got, i think not, his defense almost scored as much as he did, jj.

  • champ2203

news flash mr east when you don’t have any running backs, your defense can’t hold a lead and the everyone on earth knows you have to throw the ball every down I guess you do throw picks and I guess you don’t get shoot outs. One of the blow outs your talking about is the game Jay hurt his hand on the first series. Then Hall fumbles, then Pittman fumbles then Denvers stellar defense gives up points off both turnovers and Jay has it all on his shoulders again. He’s not the boss? Your right he’s just our best shot at winning. And yea I’ll bash a guy that’s been here two months cause he’s made the franchise look like a joke cause he can’t tell the truth when he got caught. ” Were you trying to trade Jay? I have no comment ” Way to man up, Josh. The Bucs, Detroit and Minnesota have relaesed numerous reports saying he wasn’t just listening to trade possiblities he was actively involved. What exactly do they have to gain if they were lieing about that? Nothing. And don’t say if they stir the pot Jay would demand out because the Broncos wouldn’t give a team that caused the whole thing by lieing the guy they were after. What does Mc Daniels gain by lieing and saying he and denver were not involved? Everything.

  • Colorancher

I believe that DJ can be a sackmaster, now that we have some people that will cover receivers. He hasen’t had the chance to blitz with Bly out there and Champ hurt. If not Malaluga, then Cushing.

  • T-Money

I can only think of this analogy.

If i beat my face on my desk enough times, most likely it will start bleeding. But despite the fact that my mind tells me to stop I can’t stop beating my face into my desk. And the best part is…when i stop and look at my desk, covered in blood, i ask myself “why am i bleeding”.

    And nobody knows.

  • http://portal.adams.edu Ryan McBronco Fan

well i’m not sold on rey or cushing. i watched the senior bowl and i don’t care if they aren’t trying but i saw them both get owned by the RB peerman from virginia on multiple plays. rey is supposed to be the better of the two and he is injury prone. i like going for a high prospect DB in 2nd and then go linebacker 3rd.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

    Champ2203,

You called McDaniels ..”McDicknals”? you’re funny guy ,

Almost as funny as someone’s post regarding the broncos possibily signing Chris Simms as backup

“he may actually get a chance to play in denver, seeing as how cutler’s bruised vagina might put him on IR at anytime ”

Enough will the names and swearing please, we are we fighing amongst ourselves … Everyone’s opinion is revelant but why are we calling people names?

  • champ2203

Kawike do you have anything football/broncos related to talk about or do you just look at other peoples comments and give English lessons?

  • OC Bronco

I wanted to comment on the article but after reading the comments I now just want to know if kerri is a democrat or republican. I would bet a $1000 bucks on Democrat / independent!
Kerri hook a Brother up and let me know.
Champ 2203 – If we would have hired a defensive minded coach they would have certainly toned down our offense. Defensive coaches (a la Dan Reeves with Elway!!) don’t like to chuck the ball around and I am sure that played in to the decision to hire McDaniels. And I’m only guessing you wouldn’t be happy with that but maybe I’m wrong. Something for you to think about anyway….

    champ –

Apparently if affected the way your write now. As for the running back situation I’m sure Matt Cassel had a great one to rely on… oh wait no. Maroney was hurt all year, they made it work with the ancient Kevin Faulk, the piss poor Sammy Morris, and Ben Jarvis-Ellis Green. The Patriots had the #6 running offense with no namers. Last time I checked the offense was McDaniel’s forte.

In the Oakland blowout Peyton Hillis was just fine, by fine I mean fumbling in the red zone.

It’s totally fine if you want to put a negative spin on everything McDaniels is saying, that just makes you one sided.

  • Richard

Jordan C Don’t mourn for Pears, he was a terrific player at CSU, but he didn’t do too well as our right tackle in 2007. He won’t be any better for “those people” either. Polumbus is the real deal, and he’ll help us as a backup tackle. I don’t know anything about the other two either. By the way I won’t give you any grief about a lineman in the 4th or 5th round. I think thats what McD and Prof X will do.

  • T-Money
  • champ2203

where was the patriots defense ranked? probably a bit higher than 30th huh? I guess you can get it done when you don’t have to worry about scoring 50 points because your D gives up 49

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

Where is my friend Negative Ron when we need the voice of reason?

  • jcampb72

coloradorancher I love that idea. DJ has the ability to rush the passer but has never been given a solid shot.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

I hope McDaniels sends a memo to the Linebackers not to dance after tackles when you’re down by 30 with 5 minutes left in the game.

  • kerry

    oc Broncos:

im neither Republican nor Democrat. i hate politicians, have not and will never vote, and im not your brother. and my name has “Y” at the end of it. not an “I”. learn to spell.

  • Kawike

As far as the McD Vs. Cutler discussion goes: Josh McDaniels showed his inexperience by allowing stories like this to get out in the open. As head coach, it is his job to look out for what is in the best interest of the team, and that could very well be to trade Jay (not that I agree with it). However, the Broncos organization is taking the necessary measures to put this to rest, and mend their relationship with Cutler. At this point, it is up to Cutler to show that he can be mature, put this behind him, and win some games for his teammates, his coaches, and his fans.

In the draft, I think the broncos are looking at a best player available situation. They fall in an awkward position, and there aren’t really any players available that suit their needs and are worth the value. It will probably not be Moreno with the free agent RB signings and the stable we have already, so I could see the Broncos trading down.

Ha, 7 sentences without negativity! Beat that champ! Just Kidding.

  • Jordan C

Jeez – people are posting fast tonight. I lost my connection. So rather than read all of these…

( dee ) – thanks for asking. Ideally:

    1. Raji
    2. V Harris
    3. Mitch King
    4. C Brown
    5. K Moore
    5. O line
    6. Harrell
    7. T McCall

Now I’ll go back and read.

  • BroncoinVA9986

really wonder what are defense would look like with Rex ryan maybe Bates would have stayed…who cares we got what we got and lets go Fn win we tied san Diego for first of course they had the tie breaker…so that means we are not far off from taking the Division….let’s go guys and

WHAT SHOULD I GET FOR MY PERSONALIZED PLATES FOR MY CAR>>
    SD SUX
    MLEHIGH
    DENVER1
let me know what you think

  • Joe H.

Joe,there I put my last initial so nobody can confuse us. To Champ I wasn’t really trying to make you look stupid, was just trying to make a point. But you really should give McDaniels a chance he has he has only been on the job for a couple of months. Even though he did make a mistake with this Cutler fiasco I think he has done a pretty good job in free agency so far and can’t wait to see what he does in the draft. I’m putting my vote in for Tyler Jackson from LSU. I first wanted Maulauga from USC but he can be injury prone and I’m tired of the injuries the last couple of years!!!! GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  • Joe H.

Ok I meant Tyson Jackson from LSU.

  • Joe H.

To the moderators, Joe and Joe H. are the same person. Just have 2 Joes on here just wanted to change my name on there so no one would confuse us!!!!

  • champ2203

jordan c- don’t want to read it then don’t. Is that short enough for you?

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

No worries Joe – the computers detect that sort of thing automatically. We’ll get all comments waiting in moderation up asap!

  • Jordan C

    “I hate politicians.”

I’m totally with you there, kerry. But somehow I still find myself voting.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Why are people attacking eachother on this? Everyone should be stoked now that we can officially put this Jay trade behind us…

  • Jordan C

    champ2203 –

    No problem. I won’t.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Yes, by the way, their are two Joe’s on here. He goes by Joe H, and his name is in black….Mine is in orange….

  • Vince_Marine

    I like SD SUX!!!!

  • T-Money

I’m with Dee. I never thought i would say it… but we need negative ron.

  • Vince_Marine

I think we need to look at getting another kicker too!!! Prater fell apart at the end of the year last year. Who could forget the missed extra point in SD…

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Alright people, I got a question. And lets be very, very realistic here. Who thinks that Denver can win the AFC West Division this season?? We have a whole noew defense with some great leadership on it (Dawkins). And with the fact that San Diego has pretty much the same team, I have yet to hear of any (besides sproles and CB) additions to their team. What do you guys think?

  • Jordan C

I really think it’s possible that the Broncos could win the division, but I’m not holding my breath…

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    BroncoinVA –

As a fellow Virginia resident I will say that you should go with MLEHIGH. SDSUX is funny but has underlying connotations.

    champ2203 –

I wasn’t aware that Jay Cutler played defense. He should probably just worry about being a QB. I know it’s hard to win games with a poor defense tearing apart your ego, but Drew Brees and Peyton Manning worry about the job on the field. The Saints did have a poor season, but he has no talented receivers except injury prone Colston and possibly Lance Moore. Drew Brees has also been the NFC Championship. If you want to be an elite QB like Manning you need to step on the field like you own it and do your job. I love though how Cutler understands this, at the Pro Bowl he kept on saying that he was learning from Manning. You can’t deny that McDaniels works magic with QB’s and it was just sad that Cutler wanted no part in this, if indeed he requested the trade.

I’m not saying the relationship can’t be mended and it’s all Cutler’s fault, he’s just the only one complaining. You may call McDaniels a snake for not admitting to trade Cutler, if so he meant to, but I would call it tact. Cutler did not possess any tact with his statement, he went wildly accusing Xanders and McDaniels as they said they never had the intention of trading him. Whether or not they were lying, they weren’t going air anymore dirty laundry than there already is.

This is McDaniels’ team we have to understand and respect that. We may not agree with all of his decisions but we know a whole lot less about football than he does. I’m not saying he’s infallible, we can call for his head at the end of a 3-13 season, if indeed that happens.

  • OC Bronco

Kerri- Don’t be so sensitive. This is how angry women spell their name.

  • OC Bronco

and KerrI – it’s not surprising that you don’t vote. I’m sure you just bi*ch about the policies and decisions. Anyway, sorry to have offended you. Not my intent originally.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

Great post as always Mr. East, as per the norm. I have kept to myself about this whole thing fir the most part, but I must say I’m glad that Denver’s rendition of “The Oakland Cowboys” is finally over. I couldn’t bare to sit through another act.

I’m thinking that the FA pickups are fantastic in that our young guys will have leadership (both vocal and example based) and seasoned veterans to learn from. Also, we can be competative without having to draft 8 rookies to start on defense. We can get the best defensive talent available over a few years, and not put all our hope into 1 draft class. That is the way to “build through the draft” without sacrificing W’s.

The DL has to be addressed in the draft, as I now agree with Kerry that the LB corps is fine how it is(after signing Andra). We now have some guys that are capable of playing on the DL, but no real studs. If we can pick up a Raji or Brace in the draft, I would be stoked. Brace is not a good pass rusher, but the 3-4 NT doesn’t really need to be as good a pass rusher as a DT in the 4-3. I would not be opposed to taking one of the good OLB/DE guys with the first pick, but I would rather trade the 12 to get us in a position to pick up a guy who fills a need.

I’m so glad to be talking about football again! Bring on the draft, and bring on the new era. I’m strapping myself in for the ride, who’s going to join me?

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    Joe –

San Diego is excellent at drafting. It will seriously come down to Merriman’s rehabilitation and the draft. If Denver can draft well, and shore up the d-line then they have a viable shot at the title. Remember that Denver nabbed Wayne Nunnely from San Diego, who is known as the Bobby Turner of defensive line coaches. Pass rushing linebackers are a big need, but Mike Nolan has historically faired well with linebackers.

KC could surprise a lot of people if Cassel is performs well. However, the transition to the 3-4 is a very daunting task for them because they have a lot of young guys who are mainly 4-3 players.

Oakland… I don’t really know what to expect… ever. Offensive line and defensive line are huge needs. If Michael Crabtree falls then they’ll grab him. Oakland needs to draft exceptionally well to compete this year, and that never happens.

Right now the division is favorable to San Diego who has a lot less gaps to fill. The AFC West is always up for grabs though.

  • RustyBronco

I can’t believe the negitivity from some so-called fans. I moved to houston 12years ago and found the true state of fickle fans. The Denver fans I was born and raised with , going to the games with my entire family, loved the Broncos. Hell I was at the PACKED stadium to welcome back a Superbowl losing team! Where are those fans? Most here don’t seem all doom and gloom, but I just hate when all hope is lost” attitude is among the Denver elite just because of a new coach and power strugle. Atleast McDaniels isn’t Reeves. lol.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Joe that has also bolstered me to write an article on the AFC West situation, so stay posted. That article will come after my post-combine mock draft.

  • BroncoinVA9986

Mr. East I ended up with BRONCFN so it was avaliable….The wife contended that SD SUX would get my car keyed though…..But i thouroughly agree that we are that close to taking the AFC west…the Norv Turner syndrome has started atleast we hope… remember that we finished at 8-8 and so did San Diego. both teams defenses were ranked at the bottom of the league….So I believe it comes down to this draft….CANT WAIT
