I’m calling on my inner Woody Paige for this, and I’m writing an editorial on this past week’s debacle which has shaken the foundation of the league. As my fellow BT writer Jonathan Douglas aptly put it, a plethora of Denver fans are starting to lose that lovin’ feeling. My thoughts were this:

This feeling is because of the ambiguity surrounded by this whole situation, you’re not sure who cheated you. Was it Cutler who asked for the trade earlier? Was it McDaniels and Xanders who asked first? Why can’t Brandon Marshall stay out of cuffs? Why can’t Cutler meet with McDaniels? This drama never happened before. It’s not just one person’s fault, it’s a collective group of mistrials that are tearing apart at the soul of your fandom.

The truth is that this is Josh McDaniels’ team whether you like it or not. The fans may lose faith in McDaniels for even involving Jay Cutler in trade talks whether or not he was provoked to do so. However, you have to respect McDaniels in his attempt to control the team. McDaniels has put everyone on high notice that he is the boss, this is a business, and he’s asking you one question, as newly acquired Bronco Brian Dawkins says “Are you gonna do your doggone job!!!?”

I agree that it would be social suicide for McDaniels to trade Cutler, an exteremly ill advised move. However, it makes no sense to call McDaniels an idiot and to ask for his head prematurely. After this early hiccup McDaniels seems to understand now, even after the Vikings have shown interest, per Mike Klis. Perhaps he was a little to cocky after his Cassel situation last season, and knew what he was capable of on the coaching side. After all he knows more about winning lately than his understudies Rick Dennison and Mike Nolan. What always intrigued me about him was that he was fervent in stating that he wasn’t an offensive coach, he was a football coach. McDaniels is here to put together a football team that is here to win. The difference between him and the other Belichick underlings is that he was taught in that atmosphere, the rest learned at other places and used their coordinator positions primarily as stepping stones. McDaniels is going to take away the best of New England and bring it to Denver, every new coach does it this way, just look at Gary Kubiak, hell even Bill Belichick himself brought the Bill Parcells mentality to New England. This is just something fans have to get used to, don’t worry the Denver Broncos are not a transmogrification of the Patriots, keep in mind Mike Shanahan brought over a wealth of knowledge from Bill Walsh and George Seifert.

My question to Cutler is, when are you going to put all of this to rest? I understand you’re a franchise quarterback and you have performed more than admirably in your seasons here, but everyone has a price. To pretend that a price tag doesn’t exist is just simply arrogance. Franchise quarterbacks have been sent away before, just ask Drew Bledsoe. Cutler hasn’t won anything of significance, not mainly his fault, but the bottom line remains the same. If Jay continues to refuse to mend his relationship with his bosses then eventually he should be let go, because he’ll just be the next Jeff George. In the real world if your boss treats you unfairly you usually have to suck it up, why is Cutler any different? It’s not like Cutler has been the most chummy guy to McDaniels. Between not being available to speak for awhile, then possibly asking for a trade after things don’t go your way, and then becoming upset once the opportunity comes around, how is McDaniels supposed to interpret that relationship? You are Josh McDaniels’ player, he can do with you as he pleases.

This is the McDaniels era. All Denver fans can do is hold their breath, hope that men can be men and realize who they’re really working for… us.

Also, stay tuned for my post-combine mock draft.

  • Pat

Thank you!!! great article. This is mcdaniel’s team now

  • Candide

I totally agree. This is a business, not a vocation. If Pat Bowlen isn’t saying anything, the message is clear or should be to Jay: Josh is the man, not you.

I think Jay just wants NFL love, which translated means, Big Bucks. I think his agent saw the opening and Jay is trying to walk through to a huge payday. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets it, from the Broncos or someone else.

  • http://portal.adams.edu Ryan McBronco Fan

well said. very unbiased look at the situation. my only wish is that ESPN would take a hint and stop reporting things that only make this QB debacle worse. is ESPN becoming the new FOX news? let us pray not. all in all, cutler… we didnt trade you. offers were made and we CLEARLY TURNED THEM DOWN!!! the patriots would NOT turn down the 12th pick for the 34th just because he likes pioli more than mcdaniels. be analytical here bronco fans. we would have gladly taken vrabel too if all we had to do was give one pick for both cassel and ANOTHER 3-4 linebacker. obviously WE WANT CUTLER! fans and organization alike. do you really wanna go down as “cry-baby cutler” jay? i mean come on. take a page from dawkins’ book

  • kerry

seriously, who even cares now?? if there is any of you that actually think this team is going anywhere this year then you need serious mental help. there was a glimmer of hope for a good season but McDickhead made sure he squashed that hope really quick. he has already said Hillis can compete for a “role position” i guess he didnt see Hillis play last year. hillis is the best RB on the squad now and he can only earn a “role” position. Marshall is gonna be suspended, Cutler wants out and we just signed a bunch of old secondary players to go with an aging Champ Bailey, no Derrick Ward or J.J. Arrington. so the question is? has this team actually gotten worse since Shanahan’s departure? the answer is an unequivical YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!! and there are trade rumors spreading that Cutler could be traded to Cleveland for Quinn and Shaun Rogers. at this point it really doesnt matter who lied about this or who is whining about that or whatever. the team is in utter dysfunction and there is no coming back from it. our Coach is in way over his head. but hey, at leats Bowlen got his “little Shanahan” THAT was what mattered to Bowlen. not what was best for theis team but whether he could get his little Shanahan. otherwise Spagnuolo would be the coach. Spagnuolo went straight to St. Louis and said he is gonna build a defense and run the football. a very good plan. McDaniels didnt come out with any kind of plan whatsoever thus showing his lack of experience.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

I’m not willing to blame anyone… but, if Cutler is going to be called a ‘cry-baby’ then McD has to be called ‘shifty’ (bordering on dishonest) for his attempted cover-up of the trade talks. If McD manned up from the start and said (pre or post trade talks) that he “was pursuing every available option to put this team in the best position to win,” then I would have less of an issue with this situation.

I still think the whole trade idea was stupid, mind you, but ok it’s his call.

But to attempt to hide the truth about the trade talks and how much he was really trying to get this done just makes me think he’s not mature enough to wear the HC headset, and take full responsibility (doesn’t this remind you a bit of Billy ‘I didn’t know it was against the rules’ Belichick)

Let’s hope it was a lesson learned and Josh can work himself out of this hole. I’d had to have him remembered as the guy that lost Denver’s star QB.

P.S. And I want to know where the heck Pat Bowlen is! I really want to know how much (and when) he knew about this trade crap. I can’t believe a guy like Pat (who’s been around for that long) won’t have put the brakes on this whole thing just because he KNOWS what kind of issues this crap causes. Damn, Pat, what’s up?

  • kerry

    Jonathan:

Bowlen is probably too drunk to even realize what has transpired. Bowlen got his little Shanahan and is letting him run the show while Bowlen drinks and counts his millions. anyone seeing a pattern forming here? last coach had too much power and ultimately drove this team into the ground, and now………..the new coach is doing EXACTLY the same thing. this team isnt better now but is in fact worse then how Shanahan left it. and that is saying alot.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

It’s pointless to look back and play the ‘what if” game, but the thought of Spagnuolo as HC rebuilding the D and Bates working with Cutler and a health Peyton Hillis still gives me goose-bumps…. it just didn’t work out that way.

Maybe I’ll buy Madden 09 and hide in a fantasy world for a while where things turned out the way I would have liked. :)

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    kerry –

The only person who needs mental help is you. You’re the only person who can praise and slam Shanahan in the same paragraph. It has just become entertaining to see your negativity time after time. So what if Denver doesn’t have Derrick Ward? He’s not worth the money he recieved. So what if Denver doesn’t have JJ Arrington? What has he ever done? So what if Marshall is suspended? His charges were dropped meaning a lesser suspension. A great offense doesn’t bank off of one reciever.

Hillis played started 3 games at RB where he fumbled in the red zone, had 1 100 yard game with a dominant 0-line, and then got injured. I’m not knocked Hillis’ talent, I’m knocking his experience. Hillis has a clear role in the new offense as the Kevin Faulk who usually gets the 100 games off of screen passes. What is McDaniels supposed to say “Peyton Hillis has the staring job locked up, his 68 carries and 343 yards is all I needed to see.”

It’s great that you forsee nothing good for next season, so if something good actually comes around you won’t feel rewarded, like you’ve been there the whole time.

How ignorant is it to listen to a bullcrap source written from broncofreaks.com about the Browns rumor?

Calling McDaniels McDickhead makes me think you don’t even read the articles at all, which would explain a lot.

It’s not even draft day yet and you’re not only a glass half empty person, you don’t even see the glass there at all.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Jonathan Douglas

I love all our readers, but I picture Kerry as the guy wearing one of those sandwich boards with ‘THE END IS NEAR’? lol

I’m currently a bit depressed right now, but damn dude you really, really dark.

  • Pat

Mr. East nailed it. Kerry go cheer for the raiders cause we dont want you. Peace

  • Richard

Kerry are you smoking the good stuff? If you think we’re worse than last year then let’s resign Nate Webster, pick up Jimmy Kennedy off waivers, and bring back Bly. NOT. We not worse just different. Nobody outside the brain trust knows exactly what we will look like on O and D. So lighten up Dude. Staying the same as we were last year isn’t an option!

  • myerda00

Kerry, name calling just shows you as negative and pathetic. Goodbye.
I read no response from Bowlen as, this is Josh’s team, enough said.

All of these posts state “he said this or that”, hey, I do not know who said what because I have not read a quote that said Hillis to compete for a backup role. I have read that the media said…. or a reliable source said….. Come on guys, these sports writters (??) are trying to make a living and until I read Adam Schefter state a fact or put out a quote, I believe NOTHING.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

Peyton Hillis IS a role player. Do you think he would have gotten ANY carries last year if they weren’t absolutely forced to use him? Yeah, he did OK (not great, not the second coming of Jim Brown like some people seem to think he is), but doing OK doesn’t guarantee you a starting job or even a roster spot.

Kerry spits on homeless people and kicks puppies around.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

CBS4 Broncos Insider Gary Miller has learned that the team abosolutley will NOT trade Jay Cutler. Go to cbs4denver.com for the story.

    Good article East.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

Cutler will not be traded , the Broncos have put it out there for all to see, however Cutler remains in Nashville… the ball is in his court now…

Kudos to the Broncos for going public and letting everyone he won’t be traded, now we have to see if Cutler will man up.

  • Jordan C

No, kerry needs to stay right here, if for no other reason that balance and/or entertainment purposes. As much as kerry is negative, there are those who are utopian.

I love reading (most) kerry’s posts. Craziness is entertainment. kerry, don’t stop writing!

The rest of you need to relax and take everyone’s comments with a grain of salt. Except mine, of course. And Mr. East.

  • champ2203

This article sucks and Mc Daniels is a cocky prick. Yea this is his team. Guess what the fans didn’t want him in the first place. We wanted a defensive minded coach no matter what you say about him being a” football coach” not an ” offensive minded coach” if that’s the case why did he dismantle an offensive staff ranked 2nd in the league last year? Because IT”S HIS TEAM and he wants everyone to know about it. Cocky arrogance. Look what Rex Ryan is doing in NY. He has build up his defense which is going to be rediculous and didnt touch his offense and he doesn’t even have a QB anywhere near Cutlers caliber. He said they know the system and he’s going to see how it goes befor he changes anything. Good coach. This clown we have is to worried about doing EVERYTHING his way. Bad coach. Why is it Cutlers responsiblity to be the bigger man? He straight up asked for a trade it was denied. He asked man to man. Then like a coward Mc Dicknals tried to trade him behind his back then gets caught and still to this day hasn’t owned up to it. Not a good idea. Then Cutler again after finding out about it asks to speak with other teams and again is denied. Mc Daniels should be labled as a liar and a snake. Is that someone you would play all out for. Don’t write articles making Cutler out to be the bad guy. He’s proven himself and is respected by the team. 2nd full season in the league, no running game what so ever and a horrible defense, he was asked to do entirely to much and still played extremely well. If we had the beloved Cassel last season we would have won 2 games Say what you want but Mc Daniels is the one that needs to earn the trust and respect of the team and this wasn’t how to do it. Yea your right its his team and we’ll see how this team turns into the Denver Cowboys circus next season.

  • Joe

Great article Mr. East!! Everytime I see Kerry post on here I know it’s going to be negative about the Broncos. He’s got to be a closet Raider fan. To bad you can’t ban him.

  • NathanH

And mine, haha. Anyways, I just hope this can be resolved soon. At first I was furious and was thinking stuff like “if they trade Cutler **** em.” but the more that I’ve calmed down I’ve realized that I’m a Broncos fan, and if Jay can’t calm down himself, and resolve things with McD who’s the man know like it or now, than we need to move on. We could get a lot for Cutler, here’s a 3 team deal I saw(rumor so take it for what its worth.):

    Browns Get:
    1st round pick from Vikings
    3rd round pick from Broncos

    Vikings get:
    Jay Cutler

    Broncos get:
    Brady Quinn
    Shaun Rodgers
    3rd Round pick from Vikings

It makes sense on paper to me. Viking get Cutler and pair him with AP for a fearful young duo. Browns get more draft picks which they need and hope Derek Anderson can rebound. Broncos fill the hole at NT with a giant, and get a decent prospect QB whom could end being real good himself, as well as gain the 3rd form ‘sota.

  • Joe

Champ2203 when was the last time youe have seen an owner of a professional team let the fans choose the head coach for their team, get real!!!!

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

Denver is not trading Cutler… Case Closed… GROUP HUG ? Us fans have also been split due to this, I think everyone needs to get past this and unite!

Lets go BRONCO NATION … lets get back to speculating on who we’re going to draft ?

I’m thinking DL or MLB still … I wish Orakpo was there are 12

  • Jordan C

    champ2203-

If you’re going to be negative, you’ve got to be entertaining, too (see: kerry’s posts)

Also, posts are so much easier to read if you use the “enter” key occasionally. Nobody wants to read through an entire blob of run-on sentences.

  • Richard

does this mean that Kerry is our designated republican?

  • http://broncotalk.net RVG10

    (dee) –

With our ILBs set in Andra Davis and DJ Williams, I would avoid Maualuga. Also with Andre Goodman opposite Bailey at CB, we don’t need to stretch for Vontae Davis or Malcolm Jenkins either. I also like Orakpo at 12 (Unless Raji is still there, obviously). Then in some kind of miracle Ron Brace will be available at 44. That would be a great day 1!

  • http://broncotalk.net RVG10

*correction: I would avoid Maualuga, or an ILB in the first round. We need an OLB pass rusher if Raji is not there in the 1st round.

  • Jordan C

    Richard –

What are talking about? Republicans are positive people! Everything’s working just fine and doesn’t need fixing…except other countries.

  • A Millie

    Kerry’s like a Black Republican around here…

  • jcampb72

if we are switching to the 3-4 which it looks like we are, we need two NT. One good one and one second rate one. It looks as if we might have a few options for the second rate one, ie Marcus Thomas, new guy from SF, it doesn’t look like we could get Raji or Brace. If we can’t get either one, who do you guys want in orange n blue as a rookie NT next year?

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Lol first off, Joe, you may have to change something about your name, bud. People are going to get confused over us two. Secondly,

Broncos coach says disgruntled QB Cutler will not be traded
    NFL.com Wire Reports

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels, who plans to meet with Jay Cutler sometime next week, told NFL Network’s Adam Schefter that the disgruntled Pro Bowl quarterback will not be traded despite rampant rumors.

“Let me be as clear as I can about this,” McDaniels said when reached at his office Tuesday afternoon. “We are not trading Jay Cutler — period.”

The Broncos hope the meeting will begin to patch the strained relationship after Cutler became unhappy over trade talks. The team said the conversation between Cutler and McDaniels will take place once the quarterback returns to Denver from Nashville, Tenn.

Cutler is upset that he was the subject of trade talks for Matt Cassel, who eventually was dealt from the New England Patriots to the Kansas City Chiefs, and has suggested that his relationship with first-year coach McDaniels has become tense.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  • Jordan C

After free agency, I feel like the Broncos roster is serviceable. The only real holes that I see are at NT and DE. But, they have players that could play there.

I’d say that the Broncos have set themselves up to take the best available player, though, some positions have greater need than others still.

Another hole could be strong safety since Hill and Dawkins both played FS. But I have a good feeling that Dawkins will move over since he’s slowing down.

Obviously, Raji is the choice in round 1, but since he’s not going to be there (see: KC, Seattle, Raiders, Bengals, Jacksonville – yeah I can see any of those teams taking him), I’d go Tyson Jackson. Orakpo has “bust” written all over him, imo (i.e., injury prone). Plus, I really believe that Dumervil and JMoss are going to make the transition.

After Jackson, I’m thinking CB in round 2 (Harris, Butler) and DE/OLB in round 3 (Veikune, Hunt, Brown, maybe Barwin).

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

Has anyone seen an tape on Ron Fields, his stats are pretty weak. I didnt want Grady Jackson after seeing what Atlanta fans thought of him.

Would any of you trade for Rodgers (obviously Cutler will not be in the discusssions) but could we get him for a 2nd or 3rd?

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

I would definitley want Shaun Rodgers, but of course not for Jay. The whole Jay thing is done. But I would give up a third rounder for Shaun. We can draft Tyson Jackson, Trade for Rodgers, and have someone else be the other DE. Than poof. No more ranked 29th defense. Awesome.

  • Boisebroncoguy

Thank God this will all be over soon! If the two can get along, it should be a great deal for everyone. By the way, I am a Republican and hopefully not crazy. there are some of us out there :)

  • jcampb72

Theres nothing left to say about the Cutler trade its squashed. Now lets move on. We need a NT!

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

If we’re going to trade a NT in the third round anyways according to several mock drafts, I would gladly trade it for a proven player such as Shaun Rodgers. Isn’t Vince Wolkford’s contract expiring…? Maybe we sign him next offseason?

  • Colorancher

Did know one see Shefter’s article? Cutler’s staying, Mcdaniel’s and Cutler are meeting next week. Move on and get passed this.
    Go Broncos!!!!!!!

  • jcampb72

shaun rogers was in the pro bowl, we couldn’t get him for a 3rd, maybe a 2nd. Wilforks contract is up not this year but next year

  • champ2203

hey Joe i didn’t say we get to pick the coach as fans i’m saying when they get a coach you didn’t want in the first place and he fucks up big time then I and anyone else who feels the same doesn’t have to buy into the ” Mc Daniels Era”. Try to make someone else look stupid buddy.

  • Vince_Marine

Great article!!! This needed to be said and I only hope Cutler reads this!!!

    champ2203 –

Hey champ new flash! The offense is overrated! When does yards count for anything? 2nd in yards, 16th in points… that doesn’t add up. Why does Cutler have to be the bigger man? Because he’s not the boss that’s why. He was never the bigger man int the first place. Jay Cutler has proven that he can throw the ball far, fast, and a good portion to the wrong team. Yes the defense sucked, but thats not completely the case. If it was solely the defense than we would of seen all shoot-outs and instead of 41-7, 31-10, 52-21 blow outs. You are obviously someone who doesn’t play well with others, seeing how you called McDaniels “McDicknals.” Go ahead and bash someone who’s had a job for a few months this offseason… sounds intelligent to me.

i think that we still need an ILB. everyone knows d.j. was better on the outside.
hopefully mcdaniels recognizes woodyard’s talent and makes him play opposite to #55.
of course andra is in the middle; but if we go raji at 12 what linebackers will be left to go next to davis?

  • Richard

Jordan C I agree about Free Agency. What the moves show me is that:

1 we did a great job of bolstering the Offense. Buckhalter will be a nice addition. Jabbar Gaffney was brilliant. If we get the Arrington thing straightened out we have a very nice returner. Only thing we will need in the draft is a Guard or Center/Guard type guy. Probably a 4th or 5th round pickup.

2 The moves on D have been terrific. Dawkins, Dawkins, Dawkins are you kidding me? Great leadership, great player even at 35. Renaldo Hill is a very good pickup. He started as a CB, and can cover. Goodman, this guy ran a 4.36 40. Can’t coach speed, folks. Andra Davis, I’ve wanted him as a draft choice many yrs ago. He solves the inside linebacker spot. Fields from SF? Backup nose? Backup DE? I don’t know but Nolan does. Reid? Too small for 3-4 DE, too big for LB, or is he that hybred guy? I don’t know, Nolan does. Looks like D line is where we’re going in the draft.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

    -Ryan

Maybe Rey M falls to the 2nd round and we draft him there? We could also trade down from the 12 spot to lets say 21 and try to get extra picks and still select Rey.

  • Jordan C

Just like with my in-laws, it’s probably safe to say that we all should stay away from race, politics, and religion.

Things can get out of hand pretty quickly. Plus, things can get misinterpreted (or interpreted correctly, unfortunately). Let’s stick to the Broncos, both positive and negative.
