Josh McDaniels is the next Denver Broncos Head Coach.

McDanels was among seven candidates the Broncos interviewed since former coach Mike Shanahan was fired on Dec. 30th. The Broncos conducted a second interview with McDaniels on Thursday.

The 32-year old coach has spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, where the 2007 Tom Brady-led offense broke league records. The team followed with a 2008 11-5 record led by their backup Matt Cassel. He has spent his entire eight-year career in the NFL as an assistant with both the defense and offense of the Patriots.

According to the Denver Post, McDaniels will hire Dom Capers as defensive coordinator.

The Broncos have yet to confirm the move, but both ESPN and the DPO are reporting it as fact. McDaniels was among my Top Three candidates, so I’m very happy with the move. I imagine Jay Cutler has to be, too.

There are no downsides to hiring Capers. He was a very good if not excellent D-Coordinator everywhere he’s been.

I don’t see how you judge him on his head coaching record. Which, by the way, includes a COY honor and a trip to a conference title game with a 2nd year expansion team.

  • David Kircus Made My Tuna Melt Sub

I could also make it say that Bill Belicheck is the new head coach of the Broncos. It doesn’t make it true.

  • dazbroncos

ill trust schefter before mort or Florio on PFT.

Mcdermott i dont know that well but it cant be worse than what is there now.
Im a Shana-fan so I have to admit it looks like we traded our 14 year old lease in for the new version.

Perhaps Bowlen thought that he could get more interest in the position now than in 2 years – just a theory.

Now for the D – same people or a new DC? – Surely he must have a plan to address this …. peeps seem to be reporting Mcdermott from Eagles or Dom Capers….. I’ll take Mcdermott as I dont remember much good that Capers did….

And Capers is a 3-4 that we dont have the personel for…..
No Massive NT and still no real MLB. We would have abundance of OLB with Moss and even Woodyard joining DJ and Winborn with Barrett and Mays… (wishful thinking…. if only he could tackle….) and then Champ and Bly.

Either way, get Raji from BC ( we trade down to get him) and he can play DT in either 3-4 or 4-3.
Draft like last year – quality with no character issues on the D side for the majority and give Mcdermott the ability to craft a D that rates 13 – 18 and we can win the big one.

We would need a lot to go our way but it is possible…perhaps not likely but possible….

    Go Broncos!!!!

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

I hope Bowlen lets Coach Mac run the O the was he wants. Even if that means firing Bates and Bobby Turner.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

You and I think alike Herc. I really don’t want Bowlen to become one of those meddling owners. Let McDaniels run the show.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

It’s hard to argue we have the personnel for the 4-3, either…

We need two DE’s, at least one DT, 1 or 2 LBs.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

What exactly is wrong with hiring the “young Mike Shanhan”?

I recall “young Mike Shanahan” being pretty good.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

a 3-4 switch is long overdue. If you want Dumervil and Jarvis moss to be useful players, that’s the only way to do it.

  • dazbroncos

I dont think Bowlen will be like Al -zhemier Davis…..

Hes made the 2 biggest moves in the last 2 weeks that the franchise has made in the last 15 years.

He’s also probably gonna honour the term of the contract too… but he will not let one person be in total control llike Shanny was either….

I think that is his way of meddling….. just changing the rules a bit…

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Did the Texans run a 3-4 with Capers as Head Coach?

  • dazbroncos

    i thought they did….

that was y Kub’s got mario to get away from the 3-4 and go 4-3…..

been wrong before and will be again…..

  • broncoNM

    Herc
I agree there is nothing wrong with a young shanny. Everyone wanted shanny to give up power. Thats what we have now. We have a young shanny that can focus on coaching and a GM to help make draft decisions. If we can get a DC to make our D atleast decent we will be fine. This could workout really well. Everyone was scared that our offense would stumble with the departure of shanny. Hopefully now culter and the O can develop even quicker. Im fine with a shanny clone as just HC. No front office responibilities.

  • merc22

we will get that big DT from boston college so dont worry, i just want to see what happens to thomas and robertson

  • dazbroncos

I think if we go down to get Raji ( we should not take him at 12) Thomas will stay and will robertson provided he reworks his deal.

So far he has cost us nothing ( no pick in trade to Jets b.c he played less that 65% of snaps). He is a mass in the middle but cant so it alone and the 3 of them with Powell as long shot would be interesting….. still a 4-3 though…

  • fireftrjdm

NFL.com (Shefter) is reporting that the Bronx got Nolan as the new DC.

  • Roy

Look all, I didn;t say that just because Wiki says it, it’s true. I just thought it was funny. I am with Kyle and Herc on this. Let McD hire his staff. If Bowlen didn’t agree with it, he would not have hired him. Remember, it was reported that part of the hiring process was a discussion about who the prospective HC’s staff would be.

  • Roy

Who we get in the draft, and the scheme we go to defensivelywill all depend on who is hired, and who we draft. Raji could drop to the 6th rd between now and draft day. He could also go top 10. It all depends on how he handles himself between now and then and the interviews and testing at the combine.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I agree with Herc and Kyle above, I actually like the pick of Dom Capers. He built a defensive monster in Carolina and has a very good track record. I’m also very excited to see what McDaniels and Bates (if they keep Bates) could come up with together in the terms of offense. We may get to see the best of both worlds. (Den/NE)

  • AKscott

    -from nfl.com
Now that the Broncos have agreed to hire Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as head coach, he has begun to piece together his staff.

McDaniels’ most significant hire will be his defensive coordinator. And Denver’s new defensive coordinator is expected to be former 49ers head coach Mike Nolan, a Broncos source confirmed Sunday night.

  • dazbroncos

well mr accurate….aka schefter reports mike Nolan as DC hire for us….

wonder if he is 3-4 or 4-3 guy…….

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

Schefter isn’t saying anything other than McDaniels

And Klis just filed his story:

“Longtime defensive coordinator Dom Capers, who is currently with the Patriots, will receive strong consideration to become the Broncos’ new defensive boss. ”

    Looks like it’s still open

  • Roy

Mike Nolan for DC? talk about left field….Hell yes, that sounds great.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

Where are you guys seeing Mike Nolan?

  • AKscott

herc.. nfl.com on front page, under schefters blog.. top entry

  • dazbroncos

schefters report is on nfl.com under older posts…. click on schefter and it comes up under the Mcdaniels post…..

and klis cant find his shoes let alone his own story…. just my opinion

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

    Nevermind, I’m blind.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

    Nolan is a Nazi!!!

  • AKscott
  • dazbroncos

well… blindness has just been cured!!!

  • dazbroncos

now if nolan can just cure the D issues….we’ll be on FIRE!!!

  • Dakota fan

Here’s the Mike Nolan suggestion by Schefter:

    http://blogs.nfl.com/2009/01/11/mcdaniels-is-the-broncos-man/

  • AKscott

if true im pretty stoked about nolan.. we need someone to shape up that awful D

  • Roy
  • Dakota fan

Sorry AKScott- ya beat me to it!!

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

Hmm.. I’m believing Schefter more, I didn’t realize until reading is Wikipedia page that he was the DC of the Ravens. That can’t be a bad thing. Anyone know what years he spanned there?

  • Roy

Our defence was great while he was our LB coach, maybe he can help restore it.

  • Dakota fan

Mike Nolan coached under Reeves and Phillips? No sh*t?

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

That’s right. I forgot he was on our staff. He went out with great Dan Reeves purge of ’92.

  • AKscott

    josh- ravens d coordinator 2002-2004

  • dazbroncos

the Nolan thing is pretty much UTR if it is correct…but I agree….

A great hire. He seemed, and I dont know much, like a guy who definately had control of his players and got results….
except in SF he didnt have much to work with as a HC esp on offense.

I think i like this much better than Capers

he was a LB coach and D line coach in SFO before the HC gig.

He got Patrick Willis as ILB….not too shabby…

  • AKscott

    Denver Broncos ’87-92
    (linebackers coach)
    New York Giants ’93-96
    (defensive coordinator)
    Washington Redskins ’97-99
    (defensive coordinator)
    New York Jets ’00
    (defensive coordinator)
    Baltimore Ravens ’01-04
(wide receivers coach (2001), defensive coordinator)
    San Francisco 49ers ’05-08
    (head coach)

  • dazbroncos

    so McDaniels as HC

Bates as QB / OC –
    Dennison OC….
    Turner as RB
    Nolan as DC…

    not bad….not bad at all…..

It will definately not shut all the haters up but I for will will give it a shot for a year or two….

Even if the D only gets to 15th and maybe gives up only 17 a game…… i smell success….but im a glass 1/2 full kinda guy……

or maybe that should be Lombardi Trophy case 1/2 full kinda guy…..lol

  • Roy

Willis was a no brainer. But I do agree. A great hire.

  • AKscott

i wondering out loud here.. anyone have any insight..
was Nolan a Pat Bowlen hire, or Mcdaniels???

  • AKscott

dazbroncos: just speculation on Bates or is that confirmed anywhere??

  • dazbroncos

well… roy i agree but taking marion barber over clarett was a no brainer too we thought but shanny rolled those dice too… point is Nolan brings some credability to the D side for us i think…..

but the players still have to make the players in the scheme they are comfortable in

    and b4 u jump all over me…im still a shanny fan….

  • broncoNM

    AK/daz
good info. Your right if we hang on to bates/turner and dennison that is not a bad coaching staff. McD and bates on O and Nolan handling the D. This draft will be really interesting.

  • AKscott

yeah im pretty stoked about the hire of nolan.. nowhere to go but up right??

  • dazbroncos

akscott – still spec from what i can see but off all the blogs / website out there, Schefter seems to be as close to the right pulse as anyone….

Defineltly more so than any of the Denver papers and Mort on ESPN….

Again -just my opinions and i’ve been wrong b4….

I admit that I would have expected more people to be on the Nolan story but this late on the East coast most would miss it, especially eith the predominance of the HC story…..

  • AKscott

i think the nolan thing sounds pretty concrete.. just hadnt read anywhere about bates or dennison
