Josh McDaniels is the next Denver Broncos Head Coach.

McDanels was among seven candidates the Broncos interviewed since former coach Mike Shanahan was fired on Dec. 30th. The Broncos conducted a second interview with McDaniels on Thursday.

The 32-year old coach has spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, where the 2007 Tom Brady-led offense broke league records. The team followed with a 2008 11-5 record led by their backup Matt Cassel. He has spent his entire eight-year career in the NFL as an assistant with both the defense and offense of the Patriots.

According to the Denver Post, McDaniels will hire Dom Capers as defensive coordinator.

The Broncos have yet to confirm the move, but both ESPN and the DPO are reporting it as fact. McDaniels was among my Top Three candidates, so I’m very happy with the move. I imagine Jay Cutler has to be, too.

If it truely is Nolan, I might lead to a ILb in the draft given his specific coaching experience there and our obvious need……

    If i was Websters agent…. I might start packing…..

    And Niko too…..

of course, now that i’ve said that he’ll probably take a kicker in the first just to piss me off….LOL

  • AKscott

as long as the kicker can tackle and cover a little bit ill be happy

    ;-)

Bates and dennison is just me going off what Bowlen had said publically about keeping them but allowing them to look elsewhere.

I am assuming that they will stay…..
I also thought that I had read that Bates and Mcdaniels had a good rapport and history of working together…..

I may be VERY wrong and misinformed there…

  • Dakota fan

I need to go to bed. Who knows who the DC will be when I get up in the morning.

Just kidding- AK and Daz, great info.

One last thought- will Nolan wear those cool suits on the sidelines like he did with the Niners?

And the sun rises on a new chapter in Broncos history. And the Chargers got embarassed today. Tonight, I sleep well.

  • Roy

The word during the interview process was that all were asked to keep the OC system intact. I read that to mean that Bowlen strongly wants them to return. McD’s agreement could be what pushed him over the top of the others.
Daz… no disrespect here. The last draft was the first in a long time that I did not wonder at some point if the staff has lost their mind.

    quote for the day….

” and the Chargers got embarrassed tonight”…

    Too true Dakota…. too true….

    I’m sleeping with a smile…

  • AKscott

    ahhhhh… well put dakota

  • dazbroncos

    too true roy……

08 was a blinder thus far…. next year will reveal all
07 was poor .. but next season will define that – if Moss and Crowder still underachieve..it was a bust…. Thomas and Harris bode well….
    06 was a blinder…. duh!!!
    02 – 05…. a dogs breakfast with the exception of the 2 x D Williams….
    ….. and Tatum gets a pass for a good year…… ( and 85 yards and 2 Td 4 weeks after selling phones….)

But yes Roy, there have been some serious head scratchers, or for the more aggressive amongst us, “Brick at Tv throwers”….

I wouldnt be suprised to see dennison leave and bates become official oc.

im excited to see how much better mcdaniels can make cutler. just look at what he did with cassel!

on and entirely unrelated topic, here is a paraphrased quote from chris berman on inside the nfl:

“gee tom, you know what all 4 teams left in the playoffs have in common? their safeties are brian dawkins, adrian wilson, troy polamalu, and ed reed. those are 4 pretty good safeties, etc.

good point, berm…those are 4 of the biggest playmakers on their respective defenses

anyone who doesnt think we should draft mays because safety isnt an important position is out of their mind

  • Ellis

I’m very happy about Josh and I’m very happy about Steelers. All my best wishes to Josh and GO BRONCOS a new era is on the way!

  • bronconinja

I am no expert but you guys all say that coaches cant fix the other side of the ball… Dungy was a defensive coach an the Colts obviously are offense but their D has much improved since Dungy”s arrivial with marquee players such as Bob Sanders and Dwight Freeny. Its more about the owners commiment to brong in talent and not just draft Bowlen has show he wants to win. Afterall when the colts won the SB they nly gave up 17 pts and only 8pts to a potent KC 2 games earlier. Coaches matter and so do Owners. We should be able to make some tsunami lk waves to crush SD next year!!!

mcdaniels, mcdermott, mcbroncos, royal with cheese. And we all know what brandon marshall thinks of mcdonalds bags.

He wasn’t one of my favourites but i can’t say i’m disappointed. This is going to be great. Roll on september!

  • kerry

fantastic. we have Mike Shanahan minus a decade or two.

  • Stav

Let’s not get crazy with the Shanny comparison’s but its obvious Bowlen saw the similarities. I was a little shocked as I thought they’d go Defense based HC, but I think its safe to say this guy can be deemed “Cutler’s Coach”. From the comments I’ve read from the players, the offense is pumped for this HC, good for them, maybe now we can score the way we should and be at 27+ per game and not 23. And for all the questions I’ve heard on ESPN and NFL Network regarding his age, this team if anything is very young and still looking for an identity, perfect fit.

On the defensive side, success comes from the system, the coach, the players buying into the system, but most of all talent. If you don’t have the players then what’s the point? Talent overcomes mistakes and that’s what this team has been missing on D. Accept for Champ, is there anyone else on defense that you can say “he’s going to shut down his guy” or “they know they can’t run the ball to his side” or “he’s going to get doubled all game”? No, and we haven’t been able to say that in a while except for #24. Bring in the talent to fit the system and then the defense will be dominant, simple as that.

2009 – 10 wins. 2010 – They get to the AFC Championship. 2011 – SB, I don’t think its a reach. That’s what I think, if they draft smartly this and next year. Free agency is not the way to go, one or two players yes, but you build the core of your defense from the draft.

  • AKscott

kerry, mike shanahan minus a decade or two = 2 superbowls.. i think i can live with that.
Lets wait til he at least coaches a preseason game before we hate him (and see who they bring in as the GM)

  • Kurt

I guess I’m not surprised they took an O-minded HC. A good O is entertaining and will sell more seats than a good D……
