Josh McDaniels is the next Denver Broncos Head Coach.

McDanels was among seven candidates the Broncos interviewed since former coach Mike Shanahan was fired on Dec. 30th. The Broncos conducted a second interview with McDaniels on Thursday.

The 32-year old coach has spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, where the 2007 Tom Brady-led offense broke league records. The team followed with a 2008 11-5 record led by their backup Matt Cassel. He has spent his entire eight-year career in the NFL as an assistant with both the defense and offense of the Patriots.

According to the Denver Post, McDaniels will hire Dom Capers as defensive coordinator.

The Broncos have yet to confirm the move, but both ESPN and the DPO are reporting it as fact. McDaniels was among my Top Three candidates, so I’m very happy with the move. I imagine Jay Cutler has to be, too.

Ok now who’s gonna be the DC? Mort from ESPN said McD’s first choice is McDerrmot from Philly..

  • ryan

ESPN says Capers will be the DC

  • Bucky

i would prefer that over Capers.

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

I heard McDerrmot was going to be the guy. I would prefer him as the coach.

  • Ryan M

McDaniels better not get in Cutlers face, or he’ll drop that Muthaf@cker!!!!

  • broncoNM

I was pulling for spags but im not disappointed. This is great for our young offense and McD will just focus on coaching and will hopefully with a good DC in place our defense will catch up to our offense. Its hard to argue with what this guy has done in NE. Im happy/excited about J. McD.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ben

Garrett. where did you hear about McDerrmot? Ive only heard about Capers.

  • broncoNM

Im not sold on capers but we will see.

  • Anthony33

Hopefully he keep Bates, Dennison and Turner. Can you imagine combining what NE does with what the Bronx already do? WOW. I will be pissed if the oust those three.

Ok…now reality. Please tell me they have plan to address this horrid defense, like hiring Pioli to start the process of rebuilding this mess from scratch.

Can’t say I’m thrilled about the chocie as I was coming around to Friazer, but what the hell do I know. I reality we only have a morsel of information on these guys.

Hope the O&B brain trust is right on this one.

  • MIAbronco

I FOUND JAKE PLUMMER!!! apparently hes playing wide out for the eagles under the alias “Kevin Curtis”

I haven’t seen anything on McDermott. If Mortensen did report it, it’s not in his article now.

Before anybody complains about him being an OC and our defense being a mess, a little history – the last ten SuperBowl winning head coaches and their previous Coordinator experience:

2008 – Tom Coughlin – OC (Boston College)
    2007 – Tony Dungy – DC (MIN)
    2006 – Bill Cowher – DC (KC)
    2005 – Bill Belichick – DC (NYG/NYJ)
    2004 – Bill Belichick – DC (NYG/NYJ)
    2003 – Jon Gruden – OC (PHL)
    2002 – Bill Belichick – DC (NYG/NYJ)
    2001 – Brian Billick – OC (MIN)
    2000 – Dick Vermeil – N/A
    1999 – Mike Shanahan – OC (DEN/SF)

5 previous DC, 4 previous OC, and 1 who did neither.

Also important to note that a defensive-minded coach like Tony Dungy won with offense, while an offensive-minded coach like Brian Billick won with defense. What’s the lesson? A Head Coach’s previous experience at the coordinator-level has a lot less to do with their ability or influence at the head coaching-level than we tend to think.

Let’s just hope he’s good enough/smart enough to bring in a solid DC!

  • T

I hope its not Capers… I looked a his teams rankings as a coach and they’re just as bad as we are now….

  • http://broncotalk.net Ben

Heres something to think about, if we land McDermott we should start thinking about signing free agent Brian Dawkins!

  • David Kircus Made My Tuna Melt Sub

ESPN and the Denver Post just said Capers would be hired as well. Not in what manner.

  • Bucky
  • Soxbigdog

My first reaction is not to like it.. I wish they had gone with more of a defensive minded head coach.. I think the D-Coordinator selection is going to be very key to whether or not McDaniel can be successful..

They replaced Mike Shanahan with a younger version, is all I am seeing right now

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

For McDermott to be the DC, the Broncos would have to wait for the Eagles to lose. in the playoffs.

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

Its not official at all but PFT said that he would be McDaniels first pick.

    http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/11/mcdaniels-wants-mcdermott/

  • T

Mort reported it on sportcenter that McDermott was his first choice, but still has a year left on contract with the eagles when the story broke.

  • Bucky

a contract wont matter if he is getting a promotion to Coordinator.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

I don’t see them waiting… Was Dom Capers the one who made the call on Mario Williams? If he was, then welcome! =P

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

No Capers was fired as Texans HC before the call. Kubiak had the final say in who they picked, according to reports.

  • Bucky

or does that only apply to Head Coaching offers?

  • David Kircus Made My Tuna Melt Sub

Gary Kubiak made the call on Williams with the new GM.

ESPN and PFT are still reporting McDermott.

I’d trust them over the denver post.

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

I trust ESPN just because I would rather have McDermott.

  • Bucky

    amen GB

  • broncoNM

    much rather have mcdermott

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Do you think we will actually get Mcdermott though?

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

mcdermott might want brian dawkins if he enters free agency. not matter how old dawkins is he would be an upgrade.

  • Bucky

well if that is his first choice than…. GOOO Cardinals!!!

  • Steven

Id rather have Mcdermott as well. The 2 Mc’s! Wanted a defensive guy, but oh well. Bates for oc

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

The thing about Capers is that McDaniels will have someone to lean on as a mentor if he were to need that. Not that you would ever want a head coach who would need to lean on someone, but it’s something to consider.

  • broncoNM
  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Any team that refuses to let an assistant interview for a promotion on another team will be handed resignation papers in a second.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

So kyle do you think we will get the guy from th Eagles?

  • T
  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

McDaniels is an excellent choice. Capers is an excellent choice. Love it. All of it.

And Charlie Casserly was the GM behind the Mario Williams over Reggie Bush pick.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Herc explain your reasoning behind why you think Capers is an excellent choice

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Chris Mortensen is wrong all the freaking time. And Florio at PFT was citing Mort.

    I trust the Post.

  • Dakota fan

DAMN- it took me the entire 12 days trying to keep track of the seven guys up for HC, and now I need to find out who this McDermott is. Sorry- didn’t have him on my radar.

However- now that a HC has been hired, I think we can be more patient waiting for a decent d-coordinator, can’t we?

How the hell many teams can be waiting eagerly in line to hire Dom Capers? Hopefully not ours.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

because he’s a very good defensive coach.

  • David Kircus Made My Tuna Melt Sub

The DP is almost always wrong. Schefter is reporting mcdermott was well and he’s ALWAYS right.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

What’s with all the hatred for Dom Capers? They didn’t hire him as head coach.

  • Bucky

yeah i think that needs more explanation herc.

  • Bucky

its because DC is the big need, we want a guy that fix this D an O minded head coach needs a great DC to make that happen.

  • Roy

Capers was coach of the year in 1996. He was also on the current Pats staff with McD. Here’s an interesting bit too. Wikipedia’s open line on his page:

Ernest Dominic Capers (born August 7, 1950 in Cambridge, Ohio) is an American football Defensive Coordinator for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League.

I could make wikipedia say that Caper’s is a fairy clown that wants to marry Rosie O’Donnell and have a three some with her and Star Jones

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

The Broncos just hired their first Head Coach in 14 years and everyone’s talking about the DC…

    LOL.
