As of Tuesday afternoon, three teams have been aggressively pursuing Broncos’ offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, seeking to fill vacant head coaching positions.  As for Denver’s defensive coordinator, Jack Del Rio, no teams have come calling, yet.

That may be for the best, because Del Rio isn’t exactly itching to leave Denver and run a team again, at least not in 2013.

“When you’re a young guy and you haven’t been there, the urgency and desire to get that opportunity is such that you’d take just about any job given to you,” Del Rio told the Associated Press, indicating that he would be very choosy when considering head coaching offers.

“If there’s something that fits and the right situation comes along, so be it. But in the meantime, I’m all in, 100 percent as a lieutenant on this staff.  I’m somebody that John Fox, John Elway … and the players can count on. I’m 100 percent invested in helping them be their best.”

JDR has certainly invested in helping the defense play at a high level.  In regular season play, the Broncos’ defense ranked 2nd overall in the NFL, while tying for the league lead in sacks with 52 on the season.  Under Dennis Allen last season, the Broncos recorded 41 sacks (10th overall).

“It’s like anything else. When you have team success, I’m sure there’s a lot of playoff teams that are going to deal with the same thing,” Coach Fox said when asked about Denver’s coordinators drawing head coaching interest from other teams.

“Those guys are all professionals; they understand the focus it’s going to take for us to get where we want.  They’ve got a lot of investment in it, so I don’t anticipate that being a problem for us or really anybody else.”

Ultimately, both JDR and Mike McCoy are focused on the Broncos’ current playoff run first and interest from other teams second.  For Del Rio, however, it sounds like the defensive coach is planning on focusing on Denver’s defense for at least one more season, undoubtedly bringing relief to Broncos fans following the coaching carousel.

It’s nice to see guys like Del Rio and Matt Russell want to stay in Denver. With Denver’s brilliant front office running the show and the Broncos having the success they are, wanting to stick around is only logical—at least in the case of JDR and Russell, who would have difficultly finding a better situation somewhere else.

It’s a long off season and there may be even greater interest after, what we hope will be, a championship playoff.

Hopeful news, for now. Del Rio is proving to be one of our finest DC’s of all time. This is a great man with whom to develop stability and continuity for a talented defense.

Once again; repeat after me: KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF JDR!

thank heavens del rio is one of the best DCs around, not so much at head coach

Jack Del Rio can take over as HC of the Broncos in a few years. I bet Manning and Fox will retire together in 3 or 4 years from now with a couple of rings.

Uhhhh And who was it that said he wouldnt move to a HC gig (I’m saying this pointing to the name on the back of my sweatshirt with my thumb, as if I just TD’ed)…

I’m certainly not saying you Jon because I really do not know but it makes me laugh that when Elway first took over everyone was saying that he didn’t know what he was doing, was a poor choice for the team, was way to inexperienced, Arena League doesn’t prepare you for the NFL, blah, blah, blah…

But now with an ounce or two of success he is the greatest, the best ever Exc of the year, etc., etc… Makes me laugh and shake my head… ;-)

He should be executive of the year, he’s a great job. The people that were upset when the Broncos brought him in are clowns.

    Good call, Mr. Doom.

  • Doom92

    Total Dill-Sticks for sure!!! LMAO

  • Doom92

    Why thank you sir…

Great news, but still a long way to go. Man, what a turn around for this franchise from 24 months ago when the pinheads were saying no one would want the HC job in Denver.

Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy’s not getting much rest during his bye week. Already a candidate for the Bears and Cardinals head coaching jobs, McCoy is that latest name to emerge on Buffalo’s list, as the Bills asked for permission to interview him, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

this is a great news. Jack Del Rio is an amazing Dcoordinator, we need him, right now he’s unreplaceable

  • MeOMy

I’m very excited that Del Rio is most likely staying. McCoy I could care less if he leaves. I think he has learned a lot UNDER Manning this year but I still don’t think he is that great of a OC. Once he has had some seasoning as a head coach I can see him becoming a very good head coach. He has a lot of qualities that will make a good head coach some day.

Russell isn’t leaving because Elway is grooming him to take over for him when Elway leaves in 4 to 5 years.

“…when Elway first took over everyone was saying that he didn’t know what he was doing,”…

    NO! Not everyone!

Joe Collier was a head coach at Buffalo then settled into a 20 year run as a coach and D-Coordinator with 3 SuperBowl appearances. JDR too?
