“I’ve been confident all along and know I didn’t do anything wrong. It was a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time, and I’m just ready for football.”
Those are the words of a relieved man — Denver Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil — who found out today that charges will not be filed against him stemming from his arrest in Miami on July 14th. Dumervil was arrested for aggravated assault with a weapon, a class 3 felony with a minimum sentence of three years.
Dumervil’s arrest came after a traffic altercation involving him, a friend, and two passengers in a white Impala. According to the police report, Dumervil and his friend allegedly lifted their shirts to reveal a gun in each’s waist band. However, Dumervil or the Land Rover he was driving were not mentioned in the 911 call that led to the police being on the scene.
The quick nature of the investigation causes us to believe the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell won’t be getting involved in the case. The Denver Post cites two sources close to Dumervil who said that Dumervil was not carrying a gun, and neither the Land Rover nor the gun in its glove compartment belonged to him.
Dumervil, relieved and exonerated, reiterated that he is just ready for football.
“It’s huge. We work so hard as a team,” Dumervil said. “Our organization, since OTAs, minicamp, to come into training camp with such an issue like that trying to assassinate my character, it’s not something I would like to deal with. It’s overwhelming to kind of just deal with football now.”
