We can debate whether the Denver Broncos should have stayed put at either #25 or #31 till kingdom come. It’s true that two fan favorites– Dont’a Hightower and Doug Martin — came off the board right at those spots.
Here’s something that needs no debate — the Broncos lost value in their two trades tonight.
At the end of the day, the Broncos traded the 25th overall pick for the 36th overall selection and the 101st pick. According to the NFL draft point value chart, that’s a net loss of 86 points.
Those points themselves represent a fourth round draft pick.
But many argue the draft point value chart is a controversial, somewhat subjective relic that should be updated following the new CBA and slotted rookie salaries. Fair enough. Disregard the points. Simply consider the Baltimore Ravens tonight.
They Ravens traded the 29th pick for the 35th and 98th overall picks. They traded a worse first round pick for better compensation. That’s bad no matter how you slice it. The Broncos worked the phones, but they didn’t work them well enough.
The Broncos aren’t in bad shape. They can still get one of the guys they want at 36. But it’s clear from the Baltimore trade that they could have gotten better value tonight.
