One thing has become clear during Manning Watch — Twitter is a tough forest to navigate. There is a virtual ton of pundits and experts out there, claiming to know the inner workings of the Denver Broncos‘ visits with Peyton Manning and the Hall of Famer’s mindset in general. Knowing who to trust on the social media monster is half the battle.

Here’s one person on Twitter you can definitely trust — John Elway.

The Broncos’ Executive Vice President of Football Operations posted the following updates regarding the team’s visit and workout with Manning in North Carolina on Twitter Friday, making it clear that Manning did in fact throw for the Broncos today, and that, while a contract hasn’t been hammered or possibly even discussed, things are moving along:

We enjoyed visiting with Peyton today in N.C. He threw the ball great and looked very comfortable out there.

Watching him throw today was the next step in this important process for our team and Peyton. It was a productive visit and went well.

I find it encouraging that Elway is willing to talk on the record about his visit with Peyton, and think that the fact the Broncos have seen him twice is also an encouraging sign. Today’s developments were encouraging, but we all have to be patient — Manning might decide to take even more time to decide where he wants to play the rest of his career.

    As I said on Twitter:

The fact that John Elway hadn’t Tweeted anything about Peyton Manning this past week until now must mean something, no?

If Elway was being cautious to not Tweet too soon, it’s probably a good sign that he feels confident enough to Tweet now.

4years 93million get it over with, give him what he wants & be done with it.

  • colorancher

I totally agree. He is (Elway) confident about what has been going on with PM. I guess i’m the one losing sleep over this..

Why don’t we just sign Flynn for less total money than Manning wants upfront and move on with actually building our team for the future. Bring in Stephen McGee too. There is a great 3 way QB competition going into preseason.

My question is, where are the 49ers getting all of this cap space all of a sudden?  They had about $19 million coming into free agency and have since added several pieces.

In terms of what they have to offer, I think it’s being a little overhyped.  Yes, Davis is a beast and Gore is still a top 10 back but their line is iffy, the receivers are mediocre (even with the addition of father time Randy Moss) and their play calling is uninspired.  I really don’t see how the control freak Harbaugh would work with the equally self-focused Manning.  Not to mention that they play in a stadium that’s outdated even by 1980s standards, and frequently plagued with rain and swirling winds.  They do have a tough, fast defense, but I believe Denver has the potential to be as dangerous with a few key additions.

  • broncfan

Because with Manning we have been assured in not so many words, to be the winners of the next 2-3 superbowls. Fox/Elway couldn’t make it any clearer that a pocket general is all they need to win the superbowl.
They’re making it happen as we watch…

There was an interesting article on ESPN that spoke about Manning going to the 49ers.  Basically Manning shares the same agent as Alex Smith and so part of the thinking is that the agent was having Manning meet with them simply to drive up his asking price along with Alex Smiths.  Not sure if that is true but seems logical enough.

  • Hansen

I am starting to think the same thing Trog.  I wanted PM but after all this time, and factoring in the $$, it does seem the Broncos could arrange decent QB competition for this year.  Use the $ elsewhere.

    Flynn is Rob Johnson, Jr…

Not taking sides, but, can we really trust Elway? Wow, I just comprehended what I just typed, and I’m totally taken aback that I wrote it, but can we trust him?

How honest has he been in anything he’s said in regards to the QB position? He’s done nothing but offer up smoke and mirrors since this time last year, and apparently, there is no end in sight. Will signing Manning finally bring much needed HONESTY from our most beloved citizen? Will not landing Manning bring even more smoke and mirrors? Man, I want this over with. This must be what people feel like when they suspect their spouse of cheating on them. The emotional turmoil that I’m sure we are all feeling is gut wrenching and making me age far too rapidly.

It’s pretty simple really; either Manning wants to win a Superbowl, or he wants to land 1 last gigantic payday. There is no in between.

The 49ers obviously give him the best chance of winning, and that isn’t up for debate. They were 2 fumbled punts away from the Superbowl with Alex Smith as QB. Just imagine how easy they’d make it with Peyton Manning as their QB! The 49ers are the “no brainer” choice if winning was the priority for Peyton.

If money is his ultimate motivation for not retiring and sliding easily into a front office job with the Colts, or TV Personality, then the Titans are the “no brainer” choice for him. Bud Adams has made it perfectly clear that he won’t be outbid, not only in cash, but in incentives. If he picks the Titans, then he has “sold out” to the almighty dollar, which he doesn’t even need. It would be a pure greed move on his part.

Where do the Broncos fall in this song and dance? Fortunately, or UnFortunately, (depending on what side of the fence you reside), the Broncos are the “odd man out.” Now that the 49ers are in play, we no longer give him the best chance to win, so that eliminates us from that aspect of his decision. Bowlen also isn’t a billionaire oil tycoon, with all the cash in the world as well as team ownership to offer, so that also eliminates us from that aspect of his decision. This leaves us squarely in “limbo” when it comes to this courtship. What does the middle offer? Hell, I don’t know… maybe he has Tuberculosis like Doc Holiday and wants a dry climate. However, we offer neither a) the best chance to win, or b) the most money/incentives. Because of this, we effectively have in this poster’s opinion, zero chance of signing him. But hey, at least Elway and the gang had a fun trip to North Carolina. Hopefully they ate some seafood while out there so their trip wasn’t completely useless and a huge waste of jet fuel.

  • Caseydc78

The Broncos should be able to win at least one more Super Bowl with Manning.  He can take even a mediocre team and make them look like champions.  Look at the Colts.  If Manning is as smart as they say then it should be a no brainer to go with the Broncos.  The Titans don’t have the players or the organization to give Peyton another Super Bowl.  Right now that’s the only thing he cares about.  The money is already a done deal.  He wants to be known as the greatest quarterback who ever played, and he needs at least one more Super Bowl for that.  The Broncos can give him that, as they proved with Elway in his last two seasons.  Come on Peyton, sign the contract already!

  • Anonymous

Maybe maybe not. But compared to Manning he is cheap competition while the rest of the team gets built.

  • Anonymous

    Brilliantly stated!

  • Anonymous

We may however be willing to offer the most upfront money. I don’t think because of the Titans cap space they can beat us out upfront.

  • Anonymous

This is true, but unless Manning has already passed his expiration date (like Favre in 2010), or he really is still hurt, then the up front money won’t really mean anything. This is his last contract, so unless he signs an unrealistic 7 year deal, whatever the terms of the contract are will pretty much be “guaranteed” by the simple logic that he’ll play 3-4 more years and earn the entire contract.
I think the up front money would only factor in if he doesn’t intend to play 3+ years, thus motivating him to front load a long term contract. If this is a pure money grab by him, (and thus, lowering my as well as I’m sure 99% of football fans’ opinion of him), then the up front money would make sense. But, if he really is a man of integrity and pure love of the game, then it will be the overall terms, not the front loaded portion that will attract him to the contract.

  • rcsodak

Because he won so many SB’s in Indy?

  • Anonymous

I think you are 98% right on but I’m sure there are serious financial advisers in the background that have crunched the numbers and know 72 million upfront and 95 million total is worth more than 62 million upfront and 110 total. You know, that type of thing.

When you consider depreciation and ROI of investment, upfront money can be rather significant if put into the right hands.

  • Anonymous

True. I have 1 more semester till I get my degree in accounting, so I’m sure he has his advisers telling him all about the time value of money. lol. So who knows. Until something is signed, anything is possible.

  • AtomicLeo

Flynn won’t put butts in the seats. If Tebow wasn’t selling jerseys I think Denver more active in the Flynn talks or moving up in the draft. There will be fan revolt if we don’t sign PM and Tebow isn’t the starter. If lose out on the PM Sweepstakes, and they’ll sign a low key vet and Maybe pick Curtis or Wheeden in the 2nd round

  • Anonymous

Are you being serious?  For all your talk about money you seem to forget that playing pro football is a job and every executive looks to make the team better.  If it makes you feel better to call that lying or being dishonest feel free to continue and be mocked.
Bud “don’t call me Al Davis” Adams can make whatever statement he wants about not being outbid but he still has the same constraints as every other owner, that thing called the salary cap.  Any talk of team ownership is pointless as well.  Taking the Tuxedos offer does not give Manning any easier road to the front office or TV than taking any other offer.  Saying otherwise is foolish.  Then there are the 69’ers with a system oriented coach.  Is Manning really going to sign with a team whose head coach has a tight fisted grip on offensive play calling?
Whatever kool-aid it is you’re drinking, lay off for a long while.

  • AtomicLeo

Not that I’m an insider but I think PM is not happy with the DogNPony show that this has turned into. Notice that the teams who were pushy, and over top were told, no thanks. Enough flying around on Twitter. The Broncos FO having been keeping it low key since last week.

Yeah, but I’d rather spent the money and bring in a guy who gives you a legit shot to win a SB immediately.

Four, five years from now?  There could be an completely different coaching staff and front office, two-thirds of the guys on the roster now will be gone…

“Not For Long” is the probably smartest thing Jerry Glanville ever said.

  • Anonymous

You seem to be the only one saying that I’m way off base. What part of anything I wrote is completely wrong? We can debate it, which I’m more than happy to do. Apparently Manning is perfectly fine working under Harbaugh, otherwise, he wouldn’t have worked out for him, let alone worked out for him first.

As for Bud Adams, he has the cash, which is what Bowlen doesn’t have. You see, (and you shouldn’t take on an accounting major with these things), there is a difference between cap space and cash. We have $50 of cap room, but that doesn’t mean we have $50 cash. When these signing bonuses, workout bonuses, still-on-the-team bonuses, other expenses like food, jet fuel, travel, etc… as well as when the weekly checks come due, THAT is where the cash aspect comes in. If Bowlen only has about $24 million in CASH, that’s all he can spend in guaranteed portions of contracts, or else the check he writes will bounce.

So you sir, are completely wrong when you say that Bud Adams can’t out bid us, because he can. I don’t know the bylaws of the NFL and the CBA, but I’m sure there can be some sort of future contract that Manning can sign that says when he’s done playing football, he will be offered stock or something in the team.

Again, if you want to debate about any of this stuff, I’m totally game. If you want to point out a single thing I said that is completely off base, please do, but make sure you are prepared to be called on whatever you are challenging. Until then, feel free to keep your head in the sand.
    Good Day Sir….

    I SAID GOOD DAY!!!!

  • virginiabronco

He’s not coming to Denver.  Never was!

  • virginiabronco

You have got to be from another planet!  Manning not happy with publicity?  Where have you been the last 10 years+?  He is eating this up.  And not done yet!

  • virginiabronco

And how many rings does the “Pocket General” have now?   He is going to be teh winner of the next 2 -3?  He hasn’t thrown a ball in a game in over a year, 4 next surgeries,  and is one hit away from ending his career but he is going to win the next 2 -3 superbowls.  Man you guys are off the deep end!

He will be LUCKY to finish the season no matter where he ends up.  2 -3 superbowls  (SCREAM… UGH)

  • Anonymous

I’m starting to believe you. I think if he was, it would have happened already. Is he dragging his feet because he never was serious about the Broncos and was hoping that someone else would eventually appear? To which the 49ers did?

  • Anonymous

How did that work out for him?

  • Anonymous

I’d be very happy with Flynn. I think Miami is going to make their big push for him over the weekend. We’ll lose out on the possibility of Flynn in a Denver uniform because Peyton wont be ready to pick a team until next Friday…even though reports are that it will be early next week. I’m not going to be holding my breath.

Well, he told the teams that he is looking at Monday or Tuesday to decide.

maybe if we take down that  (tebow/Manning) billboard he might consider us faster instad of holding off to drive up his price

Every player is one hit away from ending their career.

  • Joe1avs

What does integrity have to do with it?  This is his career so going where the compensation is best doesn’t make one dishonest.  It makes them smart.  And it has nothing to do with not having a pure love of the game.  It isn’t like he is taking money to not play.  He’ll still get to play the game he loves purely, just with more compensation.  I hate statements like this because they are ignorant to what football really is for these players (and owners).  Fans say they would play this game for free but after a couple of concussions and health insurance bills for their families I’m sure they’d be asking for a paycheck too.

  • Joe1avs

Contracts are broken every day by owners (and players).  What value does a lifetime contract have if they opt out of it before the lifetime is up?  Bud Adams has already given a lifetime contract before and that guy was only with the team for a year and a half before he was fired.

  • Komul

Or better yet offer Alex Smith a contract or even Matt Hasselbeck both are proven starters

For an accounting major your not very bright on the subject.  You’ve grossly and incorrectly over-simplified payroll and the salary cap.
You are totally wrong when you make the absurd claim that Manning is greedy and he has earned enough money so he should play for free.  Everything you’ve claimed is flat out wrong, period.
If you do not know the rules regarding pay in the NFL and the CBA you cannot make the claim that Adams can outbid anyone.  That has to be the dumbest response I have ever seen.  “I don’t know the rules but Bud Adams has more cash”, “I am sure there is something Manning can sign”.
Really?  Because Manning worked out for the 49’ers means he would gladly play for Harbaugh?  A simpleton my buy into that.  All that really means is that Manning was willing to meet with the 49’ers.  Even if the 49’ers had your precious Bud Adams money it does not mean he would happily sign with them.
You continue to invent whatever fits into some moronic theory that makes you feel good.  Then you accuse anyone who disagrees with you of burying their head in the sand.
Here is a news flash that will obviously surprise you.  No team is entitled to the services of Peyton Manning.  Just because Manning has not made a decision does not mean that he is greedy or that he is creating a media circus because he wants to be the center of attention.  Saying so is what stupid ignorant people do.  There are other factors involved besides money.  Yet here you are dumbing things down to the only concept you are capable of grasping.
What exactly are you going to call me on junior?  I you going to pull out the 5th grade “I don’t know but I’m sure that” again?  You’re not smart enough to see the non-logic but you’ll happily type away just to show everyone how smart you think you are.
Is being an accounting major supposed to impress me somehow?  If that is the game you want to play I’ll gladly toss out my 2 chemistry degrees and my math degree.  Since you insist on playing penis envy I toss in 5 years Marine Corps.  That would be 5 years Marine Corps infantry.

The 49’ers “magically” appeared prior to Manning talking to the Titans.  Was anyone obligated at any point to say they were taking a run at Manning?  That would be no.  Then you’ll have to prove Manning is dragging his feet.  You cannot so don’t even try to rationalize or justify whatever goofy theory/scheme materializes in your fantasy world.

  • Dbuckj

Does anyone know how are meeting with Jameel McClain went?! Cause I really want that guy!

  • Matt

i am wondering the same thing Dbuck. I really hope they sign McClain. i know Trufant, McClain and 1 other guy Geno Hayes i believe all came and met with Del Rio and received physicals but that was the extend of what the report said. I don’t know if they were scheduled to maybe meet again with the Rest of the Broncos top guns but i really hope they get McClain. it would be a HUGE boost to our Defense and run stop. I hope that they can get some big Defensive weapons as time progresses instead of waiting for this manning crap.

  • virginiabronco

Brilliant observation jd but not every player starts the season at the QB position at age 35, having sat out one year due to 2 neck surgeries combined with 2 prior making a total of 4.

  • virginiabronco

    Trog, you are on fire!

  • virginiabronco

IMO I think Mr. Elway would have been better off staying mum. Don’t get me wrong, I love Elway but he needs to grow into his new role.  He hasn’t been kind to his current QB via twitter and other comments and I don’t think he has a lot of credibility in this situation either.  I don’t see why he felt the need to say anything about the situation.  Learn from SF.

  • virginiabronco

Jd, I really like you even though your points are alomst always wrong. But concerning your latest comments above, you can’t possibly be that naive. Have you followed Manning at all during his career.  He is a marketing Machine the like of which few in the NFL can aspire to equal.  He (or anyone else for that matter in this situation) has to create maximum interest to drive up $$.   Econ 101. In his case, yes, another ring is probably a motivating factor but he is still going to get paid for attempting to win it.  AND he is going to do it on his terms because he is PM.  No goofy theme.  That’s who is.  And he isn’t going to do something totally different at this point in his career like playing on grass, outdoors for half of his games where it can snow and temperatures routinely fall below freezing AND have to contend with sharing headlines at times with another hall of fame QB in a town OWNED by Elway. That last point is also learned in marketing 101.  Manning is not going to be number 2 to anyone.

You have no idea what’s going on in Peyton’s head.  None.

Comments like these are brain-dead speculation and half-assed theories.

  • Anonymous

haha! I am starting to think that he is Peyton’s wife because he sure knows exactly what he is thinking!
