Veteran quarterback Peyton Manning has concluded his free agency tour and the Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals are now waiting for his decision, according to ESPN‘s Adam Schefter.

If the Broncos were to land Manning, incumbent starting quarterback Tim Tebow‘s future in Denver would become  endangered.  While there is a possibility that the Broncos could keep Tebow, it appears likely that the team would trade him after signing Manning.

So, we turn to you, the fans.  Who do you think should be the Broncos’ starting quarterback next season?  Be sure to vote in the poll below!

Who should be the Denver Bronco starting quarterback in 2012?

I whole heartedly understand why the Broncos are pursuing Manning. I mean, he’s Peyton Manning! I also know why Tebow is “philosophical” in this whole thing. Know what that means? That means that he too understands that “It’s Peyton Freaking Manning” and that except for a literal “handful” of teams, Manning is an instant upgrade for the short term at the quarterback position.

Now, SHOULD we get Manning? It all depends on your perspective. Is a 3-5 year superbowl contending window worth giving up on a possible long term quarterback? To some, or most, the answer is yes. I get chills thinking about being in the preseason discussions of “who do you think will be in the superbowl?”. Man, I love thinking about that!!! On the other hand, I also cringe that even though Tebow is a huge question mark, so is Manning’s ability to come back from this plaguing injury. So you really gotta ask yourself “at what cost?”

This team can’t keep both players. Yes, Tebow is coming cheap because we already paid him, but seriously, the fan base won’t allow it. No team is big enough for Manning and Tebow. The division in fans is too damaging. Some say it’s the blind Tebow fanatics. That’s true to a degree. Others will say it’s the blind Tebow critics. That’s also true to a degree. It’s because of this that these 2 QBs can’t be on the same team at the same time.

Personally, I’m giddy with excitement at the thought of getting Manning. However, that excitement is met with an equal amount of trepidation because I know that we’ll be giving up on Tebow (who I honestly think can develop into a great QB). I love KNOWING that we can get to the superbowl with Manning -vs- HOPING we can eventually get there with Tebow. While I think we’ll get there with Tebow, I know we’ll get there with Manning. I’m just glad I don’t have to pull the trigger, because I probably would stick with Tebow in the hopes that that investment pays off for 3+ years (long term) as opposed to 1-3 years (manning). I’d also be terrified that I was giving up on a sure thing in Manning for the unknown in Tebow. Again, I’m really glad I’m not having to make this decision for the Broncos, cause either way has probably the same odds of ultimately working out.

Unfortunately, I doubt Manning has more than 2 good years left in him. I think it’s kind of sad to see Tebow go before he even got 1 real off-season.

I hope he does well in Jacksonville and I hope we have a really good backup plan for Manning because I highly doubt he plays all 16 games in either of the next two years.

wow, this is the biggest bunch of wishy washy all over the map feel good mouthwash, I’ve had the misfortune to reaad today.

Why hate on Big Pete for expressing his opinion in a well thought out manner?

Actually it makes quite a bit more sence to keep tebow IF we get manning. Tebow is a project, he’s not greedy and I think based on what they broncos accomplished out of him last season along with the rest of this team, you can safely say that he’s got heart and athletic ability. Keep him around would teach him much needed patience and it wouldn’t hurt them salary cap wise either, not by a long shot. Hell, they could grab manning and a few other key components in free agency. I resent the idea that tebow would be angry or frustrated over this because he know not only is still getting payed, but that he gets to learn from 2 of the best qb’s to ever touch a football. He would probably consider it a blessing. Remember, manning will only sign a one to three year contract at most. This is perfect for tebow and the broncos.

  • Gramagoose

Keep Tebow, he’s the future, Peyton the interim.  We stuck with Elway, he needed to learn, do the same with Tebow who has been a shot in the arm for Broncos popularity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think having Tebow as the back-up presents too many problems.  For starters he is such a different type of QB than Manning that we would have to create two separate game plans should Manning go down.  This ultimately takes focus away from the #1 game plan even if only a small amount of time is put towards game plan #2 each week.  Secondly, Tebows followers are simply too dangerous to rely on.  They could create a divide in the team and fanbase quite easily and most likely irrationally.  Finally, if you’re going to have someone sit behind Manning and learn it is better that they be a similar type of QB.  Tebow is never going to read the field like, move in the pocket or have the quick release that Manning does.  It simply isn’t in his nature and to try to mold him into that type of QB may ultimately do him more harm than good.  If Manning can give us at least 2-3 years and we can get a second round pick for Tebow then I think it creates a perfect pathway to be successful now and still have a long term plan in place.

  • cj

We are not stuck with Elway. Im glad to have Elway, or we can back to josh mcdaniels leadership? i mean seriously Elway has turned this team around

  • Anonymous

I believe he meant we stuck by Elway….when he was playing.

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

The real question should really be… Why the hell wouldn’t Tim Tebow want to learn and study under Peyton Manning?!  If I’m Tebow, I go to Elway and say “sit me, i don’t care.  I want to learn his ways.”  Tebow could be the next Arron Rodgers… just without the arm.

Sooooo…Atwater going to the Jets, Pryce and Sharpe going to the Ravens, Griese starting and ending the careers of both TD and McCaffrey, all the QB’s drafted to dethrone Elway…and this you hang your hat on?  Signing a HOF QB free agent!  You Sir must be a 40 year Florida fan…

It all depends on your perspective. Is a 3-5 year superbowl contending window worth giving up on a possible long term quarterback?”

Anyone who doesn’t answer this a resounding ‘yes’ is crazy.  Many teams never even get a ‘window’ within which to compete for a super bowl.  There is no guarantee that Tebow will give us one.  If you have the opportunity to put someone like Manning under center, you do it.  The risks of him getting injured or underperforming certainly exist, but the opportunity is just too great.  If he gives us 1 or 2 (or heaven forbid 3 or 4) years of top-tier QB play, than it will have been worth it.  Signing Manning makes it easier for us to sign other high profile free agents and to really put together a serious super bowl contender.  Nothing else matters; not even Tebow.

Why rebuild a team around another quarterback keep the kid he’s a good long term investment and he hasn’t been in neck surgery 4 times.

  • CJ

    hahahah damn straighn

  • Janicelizzy1

I like Tim Tebow and I think it would be a big mistake to get Manning. Tim is young, strong, healthy and willing to play his heart out. He want’s to learn and has a bright future ahead. Big mistake if we get Manning, if he’s not able to play for long or get’s hurt again, very dangerous idea. Go Tim Tebow, hang in there, I believe in you and so do many, Denver Bronco Fan’s!!!!!

  • yup

I am right on with this guy, couldnt stand seeing manning on the broncos. this is a joke

    a) Thanks Trog :)

    b) I’m not wishy washy so much as unlike most, I refuse to talk in facts when it comes to Tebow, because he hasn’t been given the chance to warrant anyone to have a 100% factual evaluation on him.

If I refuse to say “He’s our QB, we are gonna win 10 superbowls in a row”, or “He can’t throw his way out of a paper bag and will never amount to anything”, I’m called wishy washy? If anything, you should be calling me smart and rational for not ignorantly digging my heels into 1 side of that fence or the other. I know that in today’s day and age, instant reactions are the norm, however, I recognize how dangerous that is and simply refuse to participate in it.

How would you like it if you got hired by your company, and right after you finish with all new hire paperwork, you are sat down at your desk, given a stack of papers and told “I expect these to be done by the end of the day!” … you aren’t given a chance to be trained on what they’re giving you, you aren’t mentored by anyone and shown how to properly process the paperwork, and you aren’t shown the computer system they are using, which you might not be completely familiar with. Then, at the end of the day, after not finishing your assignment, you are fired for being incompetent.

Wouldn’t you say, or at least be thinking, “I was never given the chance to learn how to do this stuff, you didn’t train me and give me time to prove myself! I can do this job, but you have to do your part in giving me a chance!!!”…. I know I would say that to my boss. Well, that is kinda what we are doing with Tebow. We got him, then we threw him to the wolves without any offseason, training camp, or preseason reps with the first stringers. It takes time to develop that chemistry. You can’t simply throw him in and expect him to play at a pro bowl level. It’s unrealistic. That’s exactly what the Broncos did with Tebow, and they are acting like the boss in the scenario I laid out for you above acted. Worse yet, many fans are acting like the boss as well because they don’t understand that things sometimes take time, and that even a great player/employee might not perform like an all-star from the moment they are hired.

I’m simply afraid that they are firing a potential employee of the year for the 2 years till he collects his retirement former employee of the year from a different company that runs things the same way. Yes, that old guy will hit the ground running from minute 1, but you only get a few years out of him, whereas, they might get 20 years out of you! Know what I mean?

Also, I fear we would fall prey to the Redskins of the mid-2000’s and the Eagles of last year mentality…. Buy your team of all stars and pencil yourselves into the superbowl. Well, the Skins and Eagles have shown us that regardless of the talent you bring in, you need chemistry to win. We could slightly hedge our bet by bringing in lots of former Colt players, because they have chemistry, but still, buying your way to the superbowl has never worked…. ever!

No doubt! You don’t have to agree with him. I don’t (wink @ Pete)… But don’t hate like that, just disagree.

If we land Manning, I’m gonna be one of the first to pound my chest and proclaim that we’re gonna go to the superbowl. I will also feel bad that we’re gonna give up on Tebow, and be worried about our semi-near future.

If we don’t land Manning, I’m gonna say that Tebow needs to show real improvement this offseason, training camp, and regular season, or else we need to move on (presumably to a healthy QB/drafted QB). I’ll be semi-sad that Tebow wasn’t the answer, but hey, true franchise QBs (like Manning WAS) don’t come along very often, so him not being one won’t break my heart or anything.

The more I think about the Manning pursuit, the more fearful I get. Part of me loves it, and part of me fears it. I want to be like I was when Shanahan traded Portis for Bailey and say “I’m not sure it’s a good idea, but I fully trust Shanahan.” I want to be able to say that about Fox and Elway, but they haven’t earned that yet. Remember, Elway thought Breese couldn’t make it in the NFL, so it isn’t like he’s the beginning and end of QB evaluation.

I still really don’t think this is going to happen. I would be excited about it myself and think it would be fun to watch even if only for a couple or few years. I’m not one that is sold on Tebow but have to admit I liked some of the excitement he brought to our 4th qtrs and a (1) playoff game. While far from a second coming he has an intensity that is rare on the field. With all of that said Payton (while not a huge fan of his on field persona) would or could bring well more than 8 wins.

At the same time he had years in Indy that didn’t go so well. I know, seems wishy washy but not at all, just talking about both sides. The only time I can remember in recent history this worked out was with Kurt Warner going to Arizona. It simply doesn’t usually work out so well.

For me I would have rather risked the bus and went for RG3 but this might just be the next best thing, after all its just money and like RG3 it will either work or it wont, period. Again, with that said, I think it would be pretty fun and we can add to the D with the Tebow picks we pick up from JAX.

Its all guess work right now and I still don’t think it will happen. All you hard core Tebow fans can rest easy, I’m pretty sure you have nada to worry about.

     Contract talks. http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_20156608/broncos-among-teams-talking-contract-peyton-manning

For everyone who wants Manning its starting to look bad. Texans are in it now. And different reports about Dolphins, Titans getting involved

  • Anonymous

Well stated Pete. As I wrote below I’d be excited about this. And if not, like you, I would also be bummed that Tebow isn’t the answer. I’m really not the “hater” that some seem to think; I’m just not sold.

No Johnny isn’t the stop-all on QB evaluation but any one can make the wrong call once in a while. The 49ers thought Drunkenmiller was the next coming ~shrug~.

As for the fairly near future, I have that fear as well but one thing is sure; Payton would either get us another ring or we’ll be right here in a few years with an unproven QB. Its all a flip of the ‘ole coin either way it pans out.

I am, however, of the thought that Tebow will never be worth more to us in a trade than he is right now with JAX.

I like the work analogy, its pretty accurate I must admit. And yes I’ve been there so it struck a cord!

  • Anonymous

I would argue that the Tebow fanbase won’t allow Tebow to carry a clipboard.  Broncos fans have no problem with Tebow spending a year or two learning from Manning.

English is not everyone’s first language!

The Texans are in it solely to keep Manning off the Tuxedos, er, Titans roster.

Jim Plunkett, Craig Morton and Rich Gannon all worked out well.

I just don’t see where Manning, in his first year as a Bronco would make us “automatic” contenders, honestly, he has had his offense his way tailored to him for years and won…one.  He couldn’t win in the playoffs for how long?  Now his new team needs to learn how to adjust to his calls (linemen, receivers, backs) on the fly.  Which leaves our Defense…who could not stop the elite teams at all, no matter how long we held the ball, how much we ran, whoever we put on their tightends.  QB was a weakness, I agree, but there was a whole side of the ball that was a weakness as well.

  • MLC384

I think that Manning is either one injury or a couple of years away from retirement. IF Manning decides to come to Denver and IF Tebow goes, then the Broncos have to go through the whole process again of finding a quarterback. Tebow has grown greatly this past year, and it would be a shame to toss him out. Manning would be a great mentor for Tebow.

  • CJ

I agree, but it depends on the length of his contract. I think 2 years is the most Tebow would want to wait. But this is all just speculation

  • Anonymous

     Craig Morton.

  • Anonymous

I’d have loved it if we already had Manning when we drafted Tebow. Know why? Because it would be the exact situation as Favre/Rodgers. Tebow would have sat on the bench behind our future HOF QB and nobody would have made a peep. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case. The Tebow “lovers” will clamor for him to start and for us not to get Manning. The Tebow “haters” will clamor for the Broncos to dump the side-show that will never amount to a hill of beans. Both sides will be equally vocal. You’ll find that the haters don’t want Tebow to sit behind Manning any less than the lovers. I hear so many more “haters” shouting than I do “lovers” shouting, that I find it hard to believe that it’s simply the “Tebow Lovers” that will force the Broncos to trade him. Usually, the “Tebow Lovers” only speak up when attacked, not the other way around. That’s just my simple observation. I might be completely wrong, but that’s what I’ve seen so far.

I think most (not all) Tebow fans are just that; Tebow fans. The vast majority of his followers were not even Broncos fans before he got here. If he were to leave those fans would follow him and the true Broncos fans, while may still support him, would stay.

I liked Morton but I fail to see his relevance pertaining to my arguments?

    Hey

  • SixxGunnSound

This is my spin on things why can’t we keep both? I think it would be the best thing for Tebow to stay! Think Montana Young for a minute both could be a starter but the things Young learned from Montatna I believe Tebow would stay cuz he is not Greedy and doest have to be in the spotlight,we could get Manning be good for 2-3 years all the while Tebow is learning from a HOF QB I mean good on the field training i mean Elway should be doing this already but Tebow would only be 27-28 when it would be time for Manning to hang it up and its Tebow Time for the next decade I feel like I’m the only person that sees this I mean am I the only person that thinks this is the best thing for the team why does Tebow have to go anywhere he is loved in Denver they should ask Tebow what he wants not make up his mind for him

  • Lil_Bugzy@msn.com

I happen to think that Tedow is a smart guy and would love the opportunity to step back and learn from someone who knows what he’s doing. He has plenty of years so it wouldn’t hurt him to stay with the Broncos and become a better QB. He is Bronco material and possibly legend material if he can step back one and take notes. Manning has only so many years and Tebow is just at the start of his. Manning is an amazing QB and has always been second favorite only to Elway. He can take the Broncos all the way if we want him bad enough. I want him to sign ASAP. Tebow is good but not great, that doesn’t mean let him go, it means give him an amazing teacher to learn from. Manning, Manning, Manning, Go Broncos!!!!!!

  • Mross35

I would prefer if we could sign Manning and keep Tebow, however I fear we will lose Tim.  I will always enjoy following Tim and rooting for him to succeed.  The big picture here is I want to win a superbowl again, and as a Bronco fan- I would think the Broncos CANNOT pass on this opportunity.  You can be smart about it though, and I hope they are able to keep them both.  Tebow ran the hurry up spread offense so well in college, it would be worth the gamble to try & keep him and let himlearn from the master od the no-huddle.  Manning + Tebow could change the future of the organization.

  • Soursweetbrat

soursweetbrat-  I agree with your statement, Tebow in while playing for the gaters was great, however this is the pro’s and yes he had a rocky start last season, but had to make a transtition from college to pro.  Learning from Manning would be a great learning experience and better chance for the broncos to make it to the superbowl.  But I don’t feel that we should give up on Tebow, he has great potential wonderful athletic and puts his all into a game.

There is only one Arron Rodgers, but I do feel that Tebow could learn from Manning and has so much potential, as far as qb to learn from Manning would be second best, of course Rodgers is number 1
