Since the Broncos traded receiver Brandon Lloyd to the St. Louis Rams, Denver has turned to the ground game and gone 4-1 while the previously winless Rams have gone 2-3, getting 322 yards and three scores out of Lloyd in the process.

It seems safe to say that to date, the trade has worked out quite nicely for all parties involved.  And it’s about to get a little nicer for the Broncos.

Denver traded Lloyd to St. Louis for a conditional sixth round draft pick in 2012, which would turn into a fifth rounder if Lloyd catches 30 or more passes with the Rams this season.

Through five games, Lloyd has caught 26.  He’s on pace to record over 50 catches for the Rams in 2011, which would give the Broncos a higher draft pick next April.

In Lloyd’s absence, the Broncos have emerged as the league’s fourth-best rushing team.  When they do go to the air (and quarterback Tim Tebow can hit his receiver), second year receiver Eric Decker has been a reliable target for the team.

The Broncos did not have a fifth round selection in 2011, but selected cornerback Perrish Cox (2010), receiver Kenny McKinley (2009), running back Ryan Torain (2008), and offensive guard Chris Kuper (*2006, the team did not have a fifth round selection in 2007) in the fifth round over the past six years.

Some notable players that Denver has drafted in the fifth round or later since 1990 include fullbacks Spencer Larsen and  Mike Anderson, running backs Orlandis Gary and Terrell Davis, center Tom Nalen and tight end Shannon Sharpe.

Lloyd is doing well in St. Louis (which is good for the Broncos) and Denver is having no trouble replacing him with Decker and the running game.  No complaints here.

    great trade… not

I’m with you on this one.  I couldn’t believe all they got was the potential of a fifth for a pro bowl receiver.  The problem is Lloyd wanted out and the timing was horrible.  I have to think they believed Lloyd was going to be a problem in the locker room (with Tebow being named the starter) and had to move him, but who really knows.

Also, if it was Lloyd who was responsible for the anonymous quotes that were coming out, then good riddance.

    Hell of a receiver though.

Only if the Broncos were going to re-sign Lloyd, which they were not.  They get something instead of nothing now.  Maybe not great but definitely smart.

What else were they going to get?  His contract is up at the end of the season.

Lloyd asked to be traded.  You never want to keep someone who doesn’t want to stay.

    Great trade.

This is the only blog I follow. I have very little time to catch up on my Broncos, and Broncotalk helps keep me informed and organized with my Bronco knowledge. Thank you Broncotalk. Please, let me know if you ever need an extra writer. When I do have extra time, I focus on the Denver Broncos. I would love to see a small story on who replaced Orton as a Captain!

    Thank you.

We better draft Russell Wilson.. i say in the 2nd or 3rd round.. he’s and inch shorter the Drew Brees but there similar in that they Ball out

I hope we can bring Hillis back. If happy and healthy he is a beast. Can play fb and RB. He can run and catch the ball. No matter what happens at qb Hillis would help. Love to have a backfield with Willis, Hillis, and Tebow. Draft all on the defensive side of the ball. Time for Dawkins and Champ to go. Not sure if Dawkins is under contract next year. I’m sure teams could use Champ and Dawkins. We could use the picks to get younger or move up in the draft. Don’t see the point in drafting WR’s since Tebow won’t be throwing much. Offensive line is a question but might be ok if the plan stays the same. Ground, pound, and play defense.

hillis..really? We have ball, moreno, mcgahee, and tebow..their ground game is COMPLETE.

and our defense is good. Dawkins and Bailey are still shutting down passing, not to mention the pressure from miller and dumervil. Also, Goodman and Williams are starting to show too

Get a grip IN GOD WE TRUST. Have you not noticed Moreno is a bum? Yes Dawkins and Champ still have a little to offer other teams. We need to get those picks.

The broncos need to get Tebow a WR in the middle rounds for those few times they do throw the ball. And they should sign Hillis to be the starting HB, while drafting a speed back in the later rounds. Hillis would compliment Tim Tebow in the running game nicely with smash mouth running game, and a speed HB who can change the pace would work really well with them. Get Tebow some real weapons. I don’t know how he is 5-1 with the offensive help he got stuck with. Decker and Royal are 3rd and 4th string wr’s. Ball,Moreno, and Mcghee are 3rd string HB’s. The bronco’s rushing game was nonexistent before the threat of Tim Tebow started opening up wholes. Use the top 2 picks on Defense and then find Tebow some weapons in the middle to late rounds. The Broncos need to build around Tebow and find players who can not only compliment him on the field, but fit in with Tebow off the field. They need to bring in guys with character. Of course I don’t think Elway and Fox believe in Tebow, so none of that will matter for the Bronco’s. Which is why I believe Jacksonville or Miami will end up trading for Tebow which wuld be the best thing they could do for their franchises. Tebow can wina superbowl with the right players around him.

Hillis is a problem in Cleveland.

Tebow is “stuck” with the same offensive help Orton had yet they weren’t a bunch of 4th string bums when Orton was under center.

Moreno is on IR and most likely won’t be Bronco at the end of the season.  Still that is no reason to bring back an injury prone distraction back from Cleveland.
