Broncos runningback Jeremiah Johnson #37 rushes for a touchdown in Dallas. NFL pre-season 2011.

Off to a strong start after losing Willis McGahee to injury early Knowshon Moreno went down with what was originally thought to be a knee sprain.  After MRI results returned Monday the news got much worse for the struggling 3rd year runningback.  Moreno has a torn ACL in his right knee after an awkard landing yesterday in Kansas City.  The team has placed him on the IR and activated Jeremiah Johnson from the practice squad.  Some were eluding to interesting thoughts on who the Broncos would add to the roster to re-bolster tailback depth.  Such as kicking the tires on Correll Buckhalter for a 3rd season in the Mile High city.  Looks like Fox and company plan to go with youth in Johnson.  Hopefully “the next man up” can fill in and keep this team’s running game playing at a high level.

One has to wonder if Moreno’s days are done in Denver.  3 years in the league and a high first round pick Knowshon has only accumulated 1905 yards, never had a rush of 50+ yards, and can probably be summarized as a passing down back.  His rookie contract has to look like an anchor on the books for the front office and you can speculate if he will be released for a free agent back like Brandon Jacobs in the off-season.

Man, we just lost the 2011 version of Steve Sewell…. We finally found out what Moreno is good for (3rd down back only) and now his season is done. This sucks. I’m sure people won’t care, but remember, we all love Steve Sewell (1st round RB for Broncos but was only a 3rd down back… why? cause he couldn’t hack it as a feature back, just like Moreno), and he was instrumental in the development of Elway because he was a good safety outlet for him on 3rd downs.
We’ll miss you Knowshon, get well my man!

  • flbronc

been critical of him, for a while, but hate to see a young kid get hurt.

didnt he have knee problems in college?  is it the same one?

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

Man this sucks. He was off to a career performance when he got hurt; it was the kind of performance that can change people’s minds. The timing for Moreno, personally, could not be more dreadful.

  • The Best

He’s an injury prone player.  It’s too bad because he was really starting to run with authority and confidence, but it seems obvious to me that he’ll never be able to stay healthy in the NFL, and therefore is no use to us.

I hope we can try to make a trade for him during the off-season instead of just releasing him into free agency.

  • King

Poor guy gets rolled up on and he’s ‘injury prone’.

Here’s to a full recovery, Moreno.  McGahee came back after his injury in 2003, you can do it also !  Prayers to you !

    Trent Richardson here we come!

  • Anonymous

I love the talent but spending a first round pick on him would be tough to justify.  Especially considering we’d have to trade up to get him.

  • Anonymous

Wasn’t Sammy Winder already the feature back when Sewell was drafted in 85?

  • Anonymous

Yes Moreno is gone.  The McDaniels purge should be complete.

  • BeyondHelp

Have to agree. I have been satisfied with his new role. Granted, big price but there is a need and good value for a 3d down back ala Bush. Sure, if he were a 4/5th rounder it would be like hot apple pie but I think Fox was more worried about fielding a team than the payroll.

This really does suck. I loved the hurdle play though, glad the guys got the win for you and that you got to contribute to it. Get well soon.

    Finally he’s gone.

  • Anonymous

He is injured every year, not dinged up, injured…that makes him “injury prone”.

  • Anonymous

Yes, but we drafted Sewell in the 1st round to be “the guy”, so by that standard, he was as big a bust as Moreno. He was 3rd down rb gold, like Moreno, but neither of them are built to be the feature back.

  • Jay_mangers

what ever happen with clinton portis?  or larry johnson?  or edgerrin james?  heck, lets see if terrell might want to play!!

  • Jay_mangers

how hurt is mario fannin?  this would be a prefect for him coming from auburn!

  • kerry

who cares. another one bites the dust. Mcdaniels draft piks continue to bust. i still remember, and ill ALWAYS remember one poster on here who said right after we drafted Moreno, and i quote: “MORENO IS GONNA KILL THIS YEAR, HE WILL HAVE 2,000 TOTAL YARDS THIS YEAR” oh would i love for that guy to come forward and own that one.

so lets recap McD’s 1st picks thus far:

    Moreno: bust
    Ayers: Bust
    McBath: bust
    Alphonso Smith: bust
    Richard Quinn: Epic Bust
    David Bruton: decent ST’s player.

i dont even remember who the hell else McD drafted in his first draft. does anyone else without looking it up?

  • DepressedSF

To those wondering about Moreno’s contract status. He’s actually pretty cheap right now which should make us all hope that he can recover and give us another good couple of years before he’s gone.

2012 only 1.7 million on the cap, 2013 2.5 million. Both those years include 832,000 guaranteed bonus money which we have to pay anyways.

His contract looked larger than it is when he signed it because 2014 has a club option for 5 million, which of course we will NEVER pick up. But for two years he is actually a cheap second running back/3rd down back option.

doenst matter how hurt he is… he’s on ir.  cant play until ota’s and camp next year.

Very few RB’s are taken in the top 5 or even top 10 for that matter and being that there are at least 3 and possibly even 4 QB’s that could go in the top 10 because they are being way overrated, Trent Richardson could easily fall as far as 12.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer but I highly doubt we are higher than 5 or 6 anyway.

Ayers has 10 more tackles and the same amount of sacks as Dumervil and he is being paid 1/4 as much.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

It’s also arguable that he’s better against the run.

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

You want Decker, Tebow and Dawkins gone too?

  • http://Facebook.com/BroncosZone Jon

    More than just arguable…

  • Anonymous

Ayers as a linebacker-bust, he is holding his own at his natural position Kerry.

Season ending injury to a kid and Bronco fans are happy about it?  Nice fellas.  Quiet guy very respectful, worked hard, never lived up to the hype…yeah makes me want to cheer him shredding his knee.

  • Cdub12344321

Hate to hear this no matter how big of a bust he is so far. On the other hand this could be the breKout Johnson needs to show us what he’s got! Cup half full bronco fans!

I have to disagree.  This was Dan Reeves drafting the best guy available according to Dan Reeves.

  • Anonymous

With Moreno gone the McDaniels purge should be complete.

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

Ayers is definitely not a bust. He is contributing solidly and while it may be questionable if he’s living up to a 1st round draft, he’s a long way from being a bust. We’ll be able to judge that better in 3 years, but I think Ayers is one reason that our line is improved from last season. (The other reasons are Miller, Dumervil and Bunkley).

  • http://ehalseymiles.com E. Halsey Miles

I see exactly one post above yours that *might* be interpreted as happy about it, and it reads “Finally he’s gone”. More than a dozen others use some variation of “This sucks,” and most of them are that it really sucks for Moreno as a person.

I’m not sure what you’re reading here that I’m not but you’ve definitely come to a different conclusion than I have.

  • King

Your post is a new low, even for you, chem.  Whether you care for him or not as a player, the guy has a torn ACL.  Not going to celebrate that (“yes”).  Hopefully you’ll never experience that.

I hope he makes a full recovery.

Yeah I agree as well, Ayers is putting together a good season. Him going back to end has for sure been a bit of a boost for his career and I think he will get even better. Still hard to get used to his number change but he’s made a fan here for sure!

He is playing like a 2nd year end should but in his 3rd season… Playing LB may have gave him a small set back but may have helped his quickness.

  • Anonymous

Hey I’ve been very critical on Knoshow and I still think he is a bust vs draft place… BUT I have to agree that being glad he is hurt is a bit much. I hope he has a full recovery as well. If he can cost less  in the future and play this role as a 3rd down type guy that might be pretty cool. He is actually pretty good on the swings and screens. But still isn’t a good backfield runner!

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

People tend to forget that he was a later 1st round pick.  If you look at past NFL drafts the washout factor of guys taken after pick 15 is very high.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I saw this yesterday, except the figure I saw was about 900k for 2012.  That makes him a cheap option for a good 3rd down back.

  • DepressedSF

True. The figures I was stating included the bonus money for his total cap hit for those years. If we cut him before next season we would only save 900k for 2012 and 1.6 million for 2013.

Which means I have my fingers crossed he can really work hard and come back strong, because he is a bargain right now for the kind of output he is capable of.
