Eddie Royal to the house!

Tim Tebow gets by with a little help from his friends.

On Sunday, his friends didn’t just “help” — they dominated.

Running back Willis McGahee burst free at the very end of the third quarter with a 60-yard touchdown run, totaling 163 yards rushing against the Oakland Raiders. Wide receiver Eddie Royal returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown and caught a 26-yard touchdown pass as well.

The defense stepped up in the turnovers department, with Champ Bailey intercepting Carson Palmer twice and Chris Harris adding an interception of his own. Elvis Dumervil registered his first sack of the season (1.5, sharing a sack with Von Miller), and the Denver Broncos dominated the 2nd half of their Week 9 football game in Oakland to defeat the Raiders 38-24.

Tim Tebow was efficient in the air and dangerous on the ground. He threw for 124 yards on 21 attempts (10 completions) and two touchdowns, but more impressively, he rushed for 117 yards. It was the first time the Broncos have boasted a 100-yard-rushing running back and quarterback in the same game in over three decades.

The win over Oakland (4-4) left the Broncos (3-5) as the only team in the AFC West to win in Week 9; both Kansas City (4-4) and San Diego (4-4) lost their respective games. They may be last in the division, but the Broncos are also one game away from the division lead with eight games to play.

  • BroncosNOSHOW

    Ditto!

We need to draft a whole new team with the winning attitude we saw today, to support the winning quarterback that we already have in Tebow. I’m sorry, but that is the fact!

  • BroncosNOSHOW

Yes – That’s IT! GREAT TEAM EFFORT today! Haven’t seen the TEAM EFFORT or the TEAM even show up, in the last 3 games until today. Hmmmm What a concept, to have a whole team show up for the game, instead of just the quarterback. Hope it continues!

  • BRONCOS4LIFE

You’re a clown.  How can you say that you would rather see Denver lose then re-post and change your story to “I do want this team to win”.  Either you’re with us or against us.  Regardless, there is no room on the bus for fans like you.  GO BRONCOS!

While I respect the opinions of others, I feel that we are being way to critical and pessimistic of Tebow. The more playing time he is given, the better he gets in every aspect of his job. He’s going to make mistakes. He is not going to make throws perfectly every time. They will be smarter, however. He’s going to be a great quarterback in the NFL. Playing NFL is opposite of playing college. He’s learning as he plays and puts what he learns to reality in the game. He’s learning the other side this year as opposed to when he was added to the team and was not given much chances to play. Becoming a great quarterback in the NFL does not happen overnight, nor happens straight out of college. Perhaps of colleges went to pro-offienses and defenses, the transition would be a lot easier.

Listen, I’m simply voicing what a lot of “fans” are saying using their “inside voice.”  I’m not, and not going to sugar coat it.  Yeah, this team today played some very good football: AS A TEAM.  But, ANY Bronco fan will tell you that they haven’t played this way for 10 friggin years.  So, excuse the hell out of me for being so god damn skeptical of this team, even after a win like this today.  Let’s see…  who have the Broncos beaten this year?  The Bengals, Dolphins, and now the Raiders (which we split the head-to-head.)  Not very impressive, and not much to hang ones hopes up on for making the playoffs this year.  Denver plays 1 sub-.500 team the rest of the way; the Vikings.

The BEST teams in this league have gotten to where they are by drafting, not FA.  Anyone with knowledge of this league would know that.

  • Anonymous

Well that is true I suppose (hands on hips…). Maybe he isn’t liking the front side now, he wants to have someones back instead…lol.

  • Anonymous

Yeah Trent is a beast for sure… I wouldn’t mind that pick either but I seriously doubt they would take a RB  in the first. Of course this regime might not have the Shanny way of thinking that backs grow on trees. I don’t hate Tebow by any means and really got excited during todays game but I just don’t think he is the guy for the Broncos…

Lots of QB’s that didnt make it in the NFL had lots of flashes… Man I had serious Billy Kilmer flash backs today and never even saw him play on TV…lol.

  • steve

And on the seventh day, the Lord rested, so he sent Tim Tebow to do work.

What is with all these “broncos fans” not getting behind Tebow??? Get on board with the new era now, idiots. You’re going to feel stupid soon

  • orangeNblue

Wait what?!?! “Easy 43 yard attempt?” I understand the frustration with Tebow, the guy will give a die hard broncos fan like me ulcers, but taking it out on Prater is not needed. I’d love to see you try to kick an “Easy” 43 yard field goal during a NFL game.  The guy’s one of the best.  And please don’t say you’d rather see Denver lose so they get a stupid draft pick.  It’s a lottery.  That awesome QB you would like the broncos to lose for could very well be no better than Tebow.  Enjoy the win, wish the kid good luck, and let it be the way the NFL should be.  Players fighting to win, and true fans cheering them on the whole way.

For every poor performance last week, there was an equally good performance this week, from 1 to 52 on the roster they were superb (sorry Brady Quinn!).  However, one bad game against Detroit didn’t convince me that the Broncos were the worst team in football and one good game against the Raiders isn’t going to convince me they are division title contenders.

Although that said, in a capsule, this week was very enjoyable and certainly a marked improvement on previous weeks.  The execution was there when needed and the defense was outstanding against the run.

Now that KC have an entire game tape to study the Broncos spread option it is unlikely that they will be as woefully under prepared as the Raiders were.  So its important for the Broncos to get the next win and keep Uncle Mo on our side.

  • Mzhermit

The holding penalties are because he is trying to give the QB time to get rid of the ball.  He is taking the blame for someone else’s slow decision making.

  • flbronc

to add to that, he had four coming in and was tied for the league lead.  now he’s #1 all by himself.

  • flbronc

not always.  one of them was on a running play, where they ran away from him.

  • flbronc

i saw what i wanted from tebow.  improvement.  without going back and watching with a pad and pencil, he only completely missed one reciever early in the game.  he also hit two wide open recievers (which seems to be hard for him for some reason), and did a good job leading decker on the td pass.  his ability to run and sell the belly option really worked for him yesterday.  he did ‘better’ getting through his reads- but is still far from where he needs to be.  his sack total was cut in half today, and against a pretty aggressive defense.

i will note that the ability of the rb’s to run the ball was key to his success later in the game.

that being said, before i am willing to pass up on a big name qb this draft he needs to keep making strides like this past week.  i think he regressed a little against the lions, but certainly showed improvement this week.  if we keep with him, i think close to today’s stat lines are going to be the norm (150-200 yds passing, 50-75 rushing with a few td’s mixed in).  if you’re looking for 300 yd+ passing outings, he’s not going to give you that without serious help from the recievers getting big yac.

always great to beat the raiders in their shanty.

Here’s the thing.  I believe McCoy, and to some extent Fox, are starting to figure this thing out.  The game plan for the most part today was pretty good, especially the adjustments they made at half time.

Like Tebow is slowly but surely beginning to recognize things, McCoy is figuring out what Tebow does well IN GAME SITUATIONS.  Practice is one thing and games are another.  The first drive is the second half was a thing of beauty.  Tebow and the entire offense picked up from that point.

I have been very critical of Tebow and admit I was about to give up on him. I now see what else needs to happen.  If they continue to figure things out we could be witnessing the beginning of an entirely new offense for the NFL. Maybe not the Oregon Ducks, but certainly something that can work and is sustainable.

Maybe the code has been cracked.

    BTW
Anyone think Von Miller was a bad choice now?  Carson Palmer knows Von better than his kids today.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4Y57DQQYQB7TRFIN5IV7FS7BX4 GTCrew3

Being an option QB is still being a QB…people who are against Tebow are the same people we GT fans (that’s what I am) have to deal with every week.  Tebow made great reads on the read-option play and had an excellent mesh going with McGahee to literally undress the defense.  You want to know why the D got so tired?  Because the option/running game is a lot more tiring for the D as they’re getting hit and running on every play.  That’s why your O-Line got such a good push, the D just basically gives up.  Sick of close-minded NFL fans thinking all a QB can do for a team is throw the ball.  When the QB is a threat to run, then during option running plays it’s 11-on-11 instead of 11-on-10.

    6’0″ QB’s that are 6’0″ or under?

  • Anonymous

    Only a little lame?

  • Anonymous

    Where were you last week?

  • Anonymous

No, Tebow is not the answer at QB but the Broncos can be competitive and draft for other needs and develop a QB.
Tebow should have never been drafted in the 1st round.  He is an expensive project.

  • Anonymous

What did Orton do to make the Broncos Bungel-esque? He was put in the exact same situations as Tebow and took all the blame where the Tebow worshipers blamed everybody but Tebow.
Funny how the entire team gave 150% every game until Tebow took over then they disappeared until the second half yesterday.

  • Anonymous

I wish I could put a mute on all of your posts, you are one negative person.  They won…lighten up

  • Anonymous

Yes he is for sure but “developing” a QB isn’t near as simple as saying it. As we all know “developing” one takes a long time. We need one with the ability to develop quickly. I’m not so much a fan of “draft’em and stick’em out there”, although that does seem to be todays NFL. I think Aaron Rogers is so successful because he wasn’t tossed out there and some of these other guys would be as well given the same circumstance.

So on that note I agree with you, but the guy has to have “it” to begin with and I think recent other than first round QB’s just don’t have “it”. It will take a first rounder that you can “groom” rather than “develop”. You might be able to score a some how passed over 2nd rounder, but I dont think that will work either. For sure appreciate your point though.

  • Anonymous

No doubt JD… The same place he (or she) will be when things are not good!!

  • Anonymous

Yes it worked pretty well “yesterday”… I cant help but think that the whole NFL is stupid because they cant seem to get on board with it either.

Things that make you go Hmmmm…

  • Anonymous

I absolutely LOVED watching Miller drive a helmet into Carson’s chest with only a minute left.  It may have been a bit late and possibly a bit cheap but after Carson got up from that hit he looked like he wanted to retire again.

  • King

They may need to trade Manning to get him if they can’t draft him.  But it is looking like they will get the first pick.  It’s wild to see how quickly the fans on turning on Manning in Indy with the possibility of getting Luck.

  • King

    “are turning on Manning”

  • King

And who should we draft?  We cannot get Luck, and no one else I see is worth the risk.  You can’t hide behind the generic “we should draft a QB” statement without a real prospect.  Tebow is currently 3-3 as a starter.  That’s a lot better than even Eli Manning in his first 6 starts.

  • King

For real. Tebow is improving.  There is no arguing that.  He even seems to play better against better teams.

He was brilliant selling the fake, too.  One of the best I’ve seen.  And as a former QB let me tell you, there is a fine line between faking a hand-off and fumbling the ball as long as Tebow was holding it.

  • King

haha.  And everyone knows you are a Tebow hater.

  • King

Uh, we have a better record under Tebow already this year.  It never ceases to amaze me that Tebow haters like you absolutely refuse to see the facts.  Orton went 1-4 against some weak teams.

  • King

I have always laughed when people say this or that “won’t work in the NFL”.  You can run any type of offense/defense in this league with the right personnel.  Unfortunately with free agency, it is difficult to build anymore with players wanting contracts re-worked, etc.

  • Anonymous

I got ya… I didn’t know they were but that is ridiculous if they are. He dang near single handedly gave them a trophy. But what have you done lately right? I really don’t think Peyton is done by a long shot, I believe he will recover and if not who would want him? No one would trade that pick for a guy that cant get it done… Oh wait!!! The Raiders would sell the farm for him….lmao, love a good Raider dig ;-)…

The “Run & Shoot” “K-Gun” “Option” and a bevy of other trickery offenses including of late the “Wild-Cat” and now the “Spread” collage offenses have been tried in the NFL and while some have had some success they all end up failing… That is because other teams catch up with it, some ones D finds a way to stop it and others follow.

Want to blame it on lack of personnel OK but remember it works in College partly because the competition level is, obviously, much different. Gimmick type stuff doesn’t work because your all the best of the best its shut down faster than you can say “Ray Lewis”. Pine riders are studs in the NFL or they wouldn’t make it in the first place. But I will to a degree agree with your lack of personnel theory. If you had the very best NFL player at each position to run say a pure option, then maybe it would.

For sure if it would or did work “In the NFL” though, as a copy cat league everyone would be doing it and they are not ~shrug~. Wonder why?

  • King

“Unfortunately with free agency, it is difficult to build anymore with players wanting contracts re-worked, etc.”

  • King

You forget that teams that use schemes like the run and shoot, etc need a defense on the other side of the ball.  I live near Atlanta, and this is the reason the Falcons couldn’t win with the run and shoot in the 90’s.  Their defense allowed too many points, even though the Falcons offense could put points on the board.

  • Lovethebroncos

What a difference a week makes! Get off the Tebow thing. The Broncos win as a team and lose as a team. It is amazing what a good running game, a little better protection and an improved play calling will do for your offense. Progress is usually two steps forward, one step back. Tebow did great yesterday, better decisions, 100 yard rushing, 2 TD’s and NO INT while he was getting cheap shots from the Faiders all day. The kid is a warrior busted lip and all. McGahee is a beast and he makes things so much easier for our offense. Eddie Royal is finding his way back and Decker is our MVP so far and a great leader. The kid is everywhere and helps everyone. Carson, there is a reason that QB’s stay away from Champ but I guess you forgot during your vacation. One game at a time. Chiefs are beatable and with a little improvement we will be fine next week. GO BRONCOS!

  • Dom’s Dad

Can we just enjoy the win for a week, man?  After the Detroit game, allow us some time to appreciate what the team did.  This is what we’ve been looking for all season; the TEAM playing well together.

Moore is much smaller than Drew Brees. Brees measured 6’0 at the combine and Moore will be lucky to hit 5’10. On top of that how many 6’0 QB’s have succeeded in the last 20 years that were 6′ or under? ESPN has Kellen Moore at 6′ 1″  190lbsMaybe you should get your facts right.

  • Dom’s Dad

That would be amazing if it was the start of a new Offensive system in the NFL, like Walsh and the West Coast Offense.  Wishful thinking, but why not?  Call it “Pray and Play” ?

  • Dom’s Dad

The idea would be to have a hybrid system that incorporated facets of a spread offense.  I don’t think it could be the core of an offense, but enough to keep the defenses honest enough because of the threat of the run.  The West Coast Offense was not looked upon as a legit style of football at first because it wasn’t ‘smash mouth’ football.  Someday someone, or some team, will develop the next stage, or evolution, of offense.  Bill Walsh was committed to his system and brought in players to play that system.  The success of the 49ers in the 80’s was because Bill Walsh and Joe Montana was a perfect match for that system.  Who’s to say what new system, hybrid system, might turn out to be very successful in the NFL.  Or are the current styles of play the apex of the evolution of football?  Who knows?

Stop with the win/lose comparisons.  It is stupid.  But if you really want to make a comparison Eli Manning and Tim Tebow both had one win as rookies.  Manning was 11-5 his second year.  Manning improved his second year Tebow did not.

  • Anonymous

How do you explain Detroit then?

Really where was the Tebow is the messiah crowd last week?

Rogers had the luxury of playing behind Favre.  People forget that.  The Packers had to practically run Favre out of town just to get Rogers on the field.

  • Anonymous

The Raiders, Packers, Chargers, Titans and Bengals are weak teams?  Thanks for proving more than my point though.

It’s the raiders it is never a cheap shot.

Speed, the NFL is much faster than college and every player is a stud.  I would say that the talent level between Green Bay and Indie would be insignificant compared to the talent Level between LSU and Baylor.
That is why college style offense and defense don’t work in the NFL.  Trying to build a team to run a spread offense would be suicide.  If you think about it this is why the Heisman winners are not as successful as a group in the NFL.
