Heading into the fourth week of the season, the Denver Broncos find themselves near the bottom of the AFC West at 1-2 and one of the teams in the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes.  Each of the Broncos first three games of the season has been decided by a field goal or less, and that was Denver’s “easy part” of the schedule.

Looking down the road, things look bleak in Denver.  Next up on the team’s 2011 schedule: a trip to Green Bay to take on the defending Super Bowl Champion Packers before returning home to take on the high powered San Diego Chargers.

The Broncos will then head into their bye week before traveling to Miami to play the Dolphins in week seven.  There’s a possibility that Denver will come out of the bye at 1-4, with games against the 3-0 Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, Chargers, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots and the undefeated Buffalo Bills still down the road.

Faced with such a tough schedule, the Broncos may not escape the season with many victories, giving them a high selection in next year’s draft which will feature Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.  One may question though if the team should select another quarterback in the first round just two years removed from drafting Tim Tebow — without getting a good idea of what he is capable at the professional football level.

The question now becomes, at what point should the team hand the reins to Tebow? If the Broncos do go 1-4 through the first five weeks of the season, should coach John Fox bench Kyle Orton and give Tebow two weeks to prepare for the Dolphins?

Voice your opinion in the poll below and in the comments section, we want to hear your thoughts!

When does it become Tebow Time?

I understand that Tebow has a different look or way of throwing the ball but I ask you, is that really bad?  I think that if they work on his strengths then maybe an opposing defence will have to play differently.  Throw them off pace.  Maybe surprise a few different types of set ups.  Players should be used to their best advantage.  Maybe it is not what you are used to, but that does not mean it is wrong.  Just different.  When the “West Coast Offence” began there were many that questioned it.  Change can be good. Be a leader not always follow.

  • flbronc

for starters, the last draft was the only one he had legitimate input in.  i think he helped put together a good group of players this year.  mcd had final call on the last two drafts and free agent periods.  as for this years free agents, i am rather happy we didnt use the shanny model and over pay for marginal or past their prime players.

if you truly think that xanders had any power under mcdaniels, i would ask you to go back and do some reading.  even bowlen has indicated he gave too much personnel power to mcd.

  • Raven Gator

You are so right Don.  Tebow deserves the chance to perform.  I too do not understand why the professional writers and sportscasters tear him up.

  • Cobraclutch037

Dude were u in a coma when you wrote this? What planet are you from? 4th string? I guess all you watch is sportscenter. Tebow has never been 4th string…matter of fact has never been 3rd string… That’s all media hype….denver has never listed tebow 3rd or 4th! Why do people keep saying he’s 3rd! It pisses me off! Broncos have qbs listed as such #1 orton… #2 Quinn or tebow. So where do you get he was 4th? Cause ESPN said so? …yeah buddy its one big conspiracy… Mcd wanted to get fired! He drafted tebow so broncos would suck…oh yeah and any other team that drafted tebow would have cut him already! Stupid! What are you psychic ? How do you know orton or Brady is better than tebow? The kid has barely played…and I thought he played pretty well in his limited time. Why all the sudden are so many people on bradys jock? The dude has never done anything in this league… So he looks decent in a few pre season games, big deal! How do all of you figure he did so much better than tebow. Tebow had the best qb rating of all broncos qbs in pre season. You probably never watched one pre season game this year! Think before you post next time! This is what we have to sift through to get real talk?

Fox & Elway’s plan is play orton all season. He gives the Broncos the best chance to win the Andrew Luck sweepstakes. Fox, Elway, & Orton are all in on it. All Orton has to do is manage the game so the Broncos are in it till the 4th qrt than he turns the ball over. At the end of the season the Broncos will b 3-13, have the 1st pick in the draft, Tebow will be cut or traded, & Orton will get a 1yr extension with the team( cuz Luck needs to learn how 2 b a NFL QB from a vet). Fox & Elway know that if they give Tebow a chance he’ll give this team the much needed lift it hasnt had in over 10yrs. Tebow would get the Broncos to 6-10/ 7-9 and out of the running for Luck. Tebow would score TD’s in the Red Zone, help out a struggling O-line(cuz his mobility) and most of All give the Broncos Fans some Hope! With Tebow playing, he brings so much need energy to the team. Dream situation would be to start Tebow after the bye week in Miami. they win against Mia, come home with momentum and beat Det. then 2 away games at Oak n @KC, they take 1 of them games. that will have broncos at 4 wins so far. then they play NYJ, @ SD, & @ MIN  they’ll take 1 of those games. 5 wins. Next home against CHI, No way Tebow lets Cutler come back n beat him in Denver. 6 wins. last 3 games NE, @ BUF, & KC. they def beat KC n steal a game from BUF or NE who are looking ahead to a last game of the season against eachother. 8-8. but real life 6-10.

@herc_rock:disqus , I considered making “never” an option but decided two of the poll options were similar enough to that.

WhidbeyBronco, I agree we should back Fox and his decision when he thinks Tebow is ready. But this was a “What’s your opinion?” post, asking the readers when they think Fox should play Tebow.

I’m all for backing Fox and (right now) I’m even still behind Orton, but fans can have opinions and voice them to the team.

  • Dakota Fan

Worst time to be a Broncos Fan? I went to school on those mornings after they got killed in the Super Bowl by the Giants, ‘Skins and Niners and STILL stayed loyal. The amount of garbage I took on those days made me want to quit being a fan, but I never did, and I never will. Some of the idiotic comments and suggestions I’ve heard are dumb. Fan boycotts? Season ticket holders dropping their packages? That’s their choice, and we all have the right to voice our opinions, but nothing will ever make me stop being a fan of the Broncos.

The idiots who talk about being ready to walk away and not be fans anymore? Don’t let the screen door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. The rest of us- we might be unhappy, but we’re still fans. Go Broncos!!!

  • Wildjoe

If Tim Tebow had been used three or four plays this season, Denver would probably be 3-0 now.  Orton’s passing stats are deceptive.  He throws east and west; and, the receiver is the one who gets the north-south yardage.  Fox better start working Tebow into some offense so he can smooth off the rough edges.  Oh, never mind, that would be smart.

  • Nicholsoncga

it is sad cause the broncos should have beaten the titans.  And they would have last year with daniels as the coach.  I love tebow and I am not saying he should or should not be the starter.  But at third and goal at the one he should have been in there leading the offence to victory.  This organization and coaching staff is a joke.

At least mcdaniels used tebow in those situations last year.

    Fox needs to go…..

  • George

When Fox or Elway draft someone they still don’t know if they will play but they fit what their looking for which Tebow does not do he was a mistake! I agree He was a great QB in the Gators stile of play but not in the NFL. Fox has had great running teams in the past but again we don’t so the play action game is not there and a QB that runs first is not the way to go . When John played it was throw the ball from the pocket and if its not there then run not look and think I don’t need the other guys to get the first down I’ll do it in doing so you get hurt and you hurt the team that is why we need a pocket QB and I agree it not Orton for the future but it al;so not Tebow we need to draft someone who fits the bill remember it took a long time to find Elway !!!! I’ve seen this team thro thick and thin sence they started and what is going on now is not the way fans react to Foxes decison !!!!!!!

  • Cdub12344321

Bronco fans let’s be honest for a minute our team is horrible at all we just fall victim to unusual circumstances. Rather it is a 63 yard field goal or a heart breaking tipped ball for an interception we just suffer from inevitable faith! Kyle Orton would be a beautiful back up QB on any team, he just isn’t a starting qb. He can keep you in games and sometimes pull one off, but so much as blow out teams (like we should have done the last two weeks) it’s not in his genetics. Our D is beautiful once we get Champ back in and take Cassius ” I cant cover a slug in salt” Vaughn off the field we will be set. They make plenty of stops our O just can’t convert, the score sunday should have been a blowout!

  • peterthegreat

It’s not his fault get over it!!!!

  • peterthegreat

totally agree just start tebow and be done with it.

  • peterthegreat

ok just move the team to LA we want a team and you can stop your bitching!!

  • Coach Taylor

and the Broncos would have to trade every pick they own plus more to get a shot at Luck.

  • Kim H.

Don, I agree with you 100%!

  • Audi

The rest of the league and almost every talent evaluator says Tebow is not a starting NFL QB.  Only Bronco and Florida fans are in an uproar over him not starting.  Gotta love the definition of FANatic coming to the forefront here.

  • Audi

Because they are taking an objective view of Tebow and do not see him as a starting NFL QB.  It is not one giant conspiracy against him or our team.  THEY JUST DON’T SEE IT.

  • Audi01

And that somehow means he is better?  Your knowledge of NFL football is clearly quite lacking if you think college comparisons = NFL success.

  • Robinsonc

Maybe it is Tebow time. The kid seems to be in his natural element under pressure.Got to be better than Orton’s blase` approach to the game and inability to do much in the red zone. It would be nice to have a QB that’s not afraid to scramble out of pocket if the need arises.Oh for the good ole days!

  • Cole 13

Tebow needs to start. anything is bettter then orton. i would rather see a fan out there then number 8 we have no chance in winning games with him. period

  • Joe

Well Kansas City is in the lead for Luck,so we better lose to them both times if we want Luck that bad!!! Personally I don’t want us losing on purpose just to draft one player!!

  • Steve

Start him now!  Having him behind center gives us the best chance of being able to draft Luck and end this Tebow nonsense.  Just because McD drafted him in the 1st round, when no one else would, doesn’t mean he’s a 1st round prospect or even remotely ready to start in the NFL.  Do you honestly believe that Elway & Company want to lose?  They’re putting our best players on the field every Sunday.  Tebow is not the best QB we have.

  • King

And Orton is?  The logic is non-existent in that opinion.

I will say this, it’s better for Tebow personally to not start this year.  The stink will be on Chokin’ O’ and not Tebow.  But it would be better for us as a team if he did start in place of Trip and Fall.

  • Bryansniezek

If the rumors of Tebow taking it easy in practice, and showing up on game day is true, then if he wants to play he needs to step it up in practice..even if it’s just for show.

When will I consider it Tebow time? After this season. The FO paid Orton a hefty roster bonus. Paying him that kind of money to keep the bench warm isn’t going to happen.

It may be a terrible analogy but say I have 2 cars..One I paid alot of money for but its only going to last for one year. The other car I paid less for, but will have it for 2 years. Common sense would say sell the car that has a year left, but I was unable to get rid of it. Now I am forced to either use it till it dies, or not use it and delay the inevitable.

I think there’s a reply fail here. I was replying to you.

“When has Tebow not gotten the opportunity to compete?”

    I agree with you.

“Avoid reality much?  Please go ahead and be stupid enough to invoke
logic then prove your point by fantasizing about a massive anti-Tebow
    conspiracy.”

Was the emailed response I received… I hope that wasn’t intended for me but I assume you’re confusing me with somebody else? You should get it right before calling somebody stupid you’ve never met or even had a conversation with. Especially when they agree with you! Makes YOU seem stupid.

For the record. I’m about as far from a Tebow fanatic as one can be without personally disliking the guy. I hope he turns out to be great but am fine with Fox’s choices to date.

  • woofgoesthedog

are you saying that practice evaluation is the only evaluation that should count?  I’m pretty sure if Peyton Manning has a bad practice season he’s starting game 1 he’s healthy.  The argument, of course, is that Peyton Manning has earned the right to not have to compete for his job.  All I’m saying is that in this particular situation, Tebow earned the right to start the season over Orton based solely on the numbers regardless of how he practices. That being said, I think Tebow should have to compete for the position, but I think the spot should have been his to lose on the field, during real games.  Honestly, I don’t care about Tebow, I know the Broncos aren’t going to the playoffs and from a simple statistical standpoint with the only data points available (the 3 games he started as a professional, I don’t care what he did in college), Tim Tebow gives us a better chance to win than Orton or Quinn.  The numbers don’t lie.

  • Wlshep10

bring in Tebow if only to bring some excitement to the games, Orton cannot motivate the team or the fans. We can loss with Tebow better than Orton.get him ready for next year.

  • Anonymous

Because Orton most likely will not be a Bronco next year I say just get the Tebow experiment over with. We will NOT be in the play-offs this year so what difference does it make. At least you will know if he can play or not. I’m of the thought that it is in-fact Tebow that would give us the best shot at the “Luck sweepstakes”. I’m not an Orton fan at all either but I am a Broncos fan and have to applaud them for at least trying to go with what they feel will give them the best shot at winning. I don’t care how bad they may want another guy (or whatever) I would never concede that Elway would EVER want to loose at anything.

With that said, lets just get the experiment over with so that they can move on as a team… I’m tired from work and my thoughts on this do drift a bit any way just in even writing this so I hope it makes sense…lol.

It’s sad that I’m seeing McDaniels as a far better option than Fox right now.

  • Richard Nicoletti

Because you said it perectly, I don’t have to say anything. Right on.

  • Richard Nicoletti

By the looks of you, I can understand your thinking. Just jump back into that garbage pail, will ya?

  • Dobravery

You’re right about college doesn’t equal NFL success; however, he also played pretty damn good in the last three games of the 2010 season.

  • Dobravery

That Dolphin game is also being sold as Gator Day.  Dolphin stadium will be honoring the 2009 Florida Gators who won the NCAA BCS game there v Oklahoma.  Tebow and Pouncey won’t be participating during halftime obviously.  The stadium is expecting a lot of Gator fans to show up.

  • Anonymous

Quit jacking to your Tebow poster and stick to the point dumbass

  • Anonymous

    agreed

  • Dobravery

#1, all coaches say they know how to get the team to win.  That is their job.  If it was true, we’d never see any coaches fired now would we?

#2, paying fans are entitled to criticize.  If I buy a product and it sucks, I’m going to say something about it.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a radio or a football team.  Some people spend thousands of dollars in season tickets.  I’d expect that they’d like to see their team win more than it losses.

  • Dobravery

Tim Tebow is not a run first QB.  He threw 88 TD’s at UF.  I know college success doesn’t transfer, but that shows he doesn’t run first.  Many of his run plays at UF were designed runs and shouldn’t be confused with pass scrambles.

If you have a horrible O-Line and no pocket, then a pocket QB doesn’t really do you any good anyway…  I’d rather have the guy who can extend the play with his feet.  If Tebow gets hurt, oh well.  You just put Orton back in.

  • Dobravery

Fox is old school and is offense is very vanilla.  It requires a better running game and that just isn’t going to happen for them.  There are teams even better at rushing who are struggling running the ball.  His offense requires a better pocket, and that isn’t going to happen overnight either.

Tebow adds the ability to improvise and make plays with his legs, but for now, Fox is still believing in his game plan to win.

  • Dobravery

Actually, it looks just as usual as last year.

  • Dobravery

    2010:
Orton v Chargers, Orton losses 14-35
Tebow (no head coach) v Chargers, Tebow losses 28-33.

Tebow is not NFL typical QB, but that doesn’t mean he can’t win.

  • Dobravery

The problem for a player like Tebow in practice is that he just isn’t going to hit his own teammates as hard when he runs the ball.  In fact, Fox probably rolls his eyes when he runs the ball.  The Broncos defense isn’t going to worry about Tebow scrambling and would probably get chewed out if they weren’t disciplined in there coverage.

    Now in a real game. . .
Tebow is going to truck over as many defenders as he can to get the TD or a first down.  As well, defenders will have to respect that and break their coverages or get lit up by Tebow’s runs.  Not making that up.  Tebow out-rushed his own RB’s at the end of last year.

Tebow is a brawler and has demonstrated he moves the ball in NFL games.  In the more casual practice environment, Orton has more polish, wears the non-contact jersey and looks better in a pocket that just doesn’t exist in real games.

  • Anonymous

Yes, Orton is the best QB we have.

The “non-existent logic” is actually located inside your head.

  • Anonymous

I got the wrong 1st impression and went back and edited my comment based on your other comments.  Given the sheer numbers it is difficult not to get confused with the worshipers of all that is Tebow.

  • mop

I am beginning to question the hiring of John Fox. He keeps saying Orton is his man. Orton’s record is ? maybe 6-19 for the Broncos’s of late.  Is that the type of winner John Fox wants?  How pathetic, either we need to play Tebow, and see what he can do or trade him to another team. Stop this incessant discussion. John Fox supports a loser, it is no wonder he was let go from the Panthers. If ORTON had not thrown and interception, we would have had a shot at winning. IF ORTON had not fumbled the ball we would have had a shot at beating the Raiders.  Go figure, we have a quarterback that stinks and a coach that is sniffing the same glue.

  • Anonymous

Are you really this stupid?  What numbers did Tebow put up that earned him the right to start?  By your “logic” Quinn should be starting because he earned the job by numbers he put up.  Furthermore there is a vast difference between Payton Manning and Tim Tebow.  Are you really saying that it is acceptable for any player to continually to practice poorly yet you’re going to assume that that player will flip a switch and perform well in games?  You might try going back to 8th grade and learning to read as well.

  • Anonymous

All his life being the last 10 years.  He obviously was never a fan in the 60’s and 70’s.

  • Anonymous

    then sucked in preseason

  • Anonymous

By week 7 the rest of the league had McD’s offense figured out.  This wasn’t Orton’s fault.  It really is not Tebow’s fault either.  McD is nothing more than a turd polisher.

  • Anonymous

He would have already been caught filming the Raiders and The Broncs would have been blown out.
