Heading into the fourth week of the season, the Denver Broncos find themselves near the bottom of the AFC West at 1-2 and one of the teams in the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes.  Each of the Broncos first three games of the season has been decided by a field goal or less, and that was Denver’s “easy part” of the schedule.

Looking down the road, things look bleak in Denver.  Next up on the team’s 2011 schedule: a trip to Green Bay to take on the defending Super Bowl Champion Packers before returning home to take on the high powered San Diego Chargers.

The Broncos will then head into their bye week before traveling to Miami to play the Dolphins in week seven.  There’s a possibility that Denver will come out of the bye at 1-4, with games against the 3-0 Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders, New York Jets, Chargers, Chicago Bears, New England Patriots and the undefeated Buffalo Bills still down the road.

Faced with such a tough schedule, the Broncos may not escape the season with many victories, giving them a high selection in next year’s draft which will feature Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.  One may question though if the team should select another quarterback in the first round just two years removed from drafting Tim Tebow — without getting a good idea of what he is capable at the professional football level.

The question now becomes, at what point should the team hand the reins to Tebow? If the Broncos do go 1-4 through the first five weeks of the season, should coach John Fox bench Kyle Orton and give Tebow two weeks to prepare for the Dolphins?

Sorry…I don’t quite understand all the Tim Tebow mocking.   Seems like every other player that gets drafted or signs as a free agent gets a chance to prove himself.  Tim Tebow’s records in college are not made up, and he competed in the toughest conference, against athletes that are now in the NFL, while winning National Championships and Heisman(should have been two).  He scored like 12 TDs last year and performed, better than average in his starts….Yet the bashing?  I have never seen professional writers and sportscasters attack a young man like they have Tebow.  Why?  Listening to these “experts” and critics you would think he can’t tie his own shoes.  Derek Anderson once completed 6 passes for 26 yards for the Browns, and he was a first rounder. Teams still hired him and no media attacked him,,yet a guy with 3 starts, they have a field day.  Tim Tebow deserves the opportunity to compete…if that happens…he will succeed.

When has Tebow not gotten the opportunity to compete?

I’m reminded of the caption in “Barely Audible” proclaiming John Hufnagel the future of the Broncos.  The next year he was playing in Canada.

  • Kellyleephipps

He should have started the season at 0-0….EFX even tried to trade Orton to get the ball rolling…but were stuck with Orton’s inflated contract.  I’ve been a Bronco fan my whole life and loved watching Elway’s scrambling improvisational unique style and rocket arm.  And now we have the same kind of player, only a better leader on our Bench and Elway seems to be holding him back…for what?  There’s no way he would play worse than Orton has and he would elevate the team.  If Tebow was in the game down by the goal line we’d be 2-1 and heading into Green Bay with confidence…now we go with a deflated team that sees the “Orton Sucks”writing on the wall.  Let’s see if Fox can earn the team;s respect for his stubborn insistence on not starting the Tebow excitement bandwagon.  I never even knew who Tebow was until we drafted him and could care less for his fake religion, but man I LOVE watching him play…anything can happen, and everyone is fired up!  If EFX refuses to play him all year and then they trade him away to some other lucky team, I’ll have found my new team.  At this point, I’m more of a Tebow fan than a Broncos FO fan.  I can still root for the defense, but when Orton’s on the field, I will be rooting against him with fierce passion…so that Tebow gets his chance sooner!

Then you we’re never really a fan.  Sorry.

    I don’t see a button for “never.”

  • Mydynawide

I also have been a broncos fan all my life, season ticket holder.I hate ORTON’S play more than any fan.Tebow is a gamer, let him play before there are no fans in the seats.

  • Wardjg

The correct word is “reins” and give them to Tebow and let him go with it….we drafted him for some reason so let him prove it!

  • Th3r08

Why isn’t there a button for 6 weeks ago?

  • Paul Crandall

How many ways does it need to be said.  Tebow is a football player.. Period… He elevates those around him to play at the higest level and that makes the TEAM better… If Orton could do that a’la Aaron Rogers, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, or Peyton Manning then the Broncos would be a playoff contender…. Give Tebow a shot for 6 games… If he performs terribly trade him next year.  If the team improves then we will know that he is the QB of the future.  No one is going to tell me that Blaine Gabbert, Colt McCoy or Cam Newton are better than Tebow.  He outperformed all of them in the toughest conference in college football.  THE SEC.

  • Timothy Gladney

It amazes me that the Bronco’s have a quarterback that can put fan’s in the stands and they will not play him. I would never put money on it, but I think that they are purposely giving Kyle a chance to screw up. This gives Tebow time to get used to taking snaps under center.

  • yerkool44

he! he! when QB’s like Rivers,Brady,Favre,Vick,McNabb,Hassellbak etc..  throw incomplete passes its business as usual.  But when Timmy throws, its considered inaccurate and is criticize heavily .  Hmm something tells me that the hate for Timmy is beyond football

  • Mross

I think they are sucking for Luck… Hell, if Kyle keeps not winning us games and also losing us games, we could end up with the #1 pick. It is all part of the plan imo.  They can start Tebow next year then if he pans out trade Luck for another #1 or they are set at QB with Luck.

  • Mross

    That said:

It is time for Tebow, because a tru Bronco fan wants to Win, and exciting offensive football left when McD ousted all our key offensive weapons…

At what point does it become FIRE XANDERS TIME?

  • NMBronc-in-DC

I am with Herc on this one.  Orton really questions a fans allegiance.  I am also a fan for life and I have been one of Ortons biggest critics…even still hope he gets injured.  But on Sunday, during that final drive I was hoping he would do well so my Broncs would win.   I have no faith and intution tells me this season was over the moment he was named starter.

Orton should be called out and traded for some coors light and a box of crayons.  But fans are fans…so when it matters, who’s team are you on.

For real?  How about right now?  Everyone who has followed his career knows that he is not a good practice player, apparently he tries to elevate his game during practice so that he can just let things happen during the game, i.e., he plays outside himself when it doesn’t count so he can just let his game take over when it does at a level he understands both positively and negatively.  Fox used his practices as an excuse to drop him to 3rd on a roster with Orton and Quinn.  Fact: Tebow had the NFL’s best QB rating for players with less than 100 passing attempts last year.  He had a better QB rating in his first three starts than Michael Vick, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.  He played against the number 1 pass defense (Chargers) number 2 pass defense (Oakland) and worst pass defense (Texans) in his only three starts but everyone only talks about how the Texans were awful.  He’s a QB, in three games he didn’t prove that he’s good but he proved that he deserved a chance this year over Orton.  If you don’t think so it’s because you aren’t looking at the numbers.  I don’t care what he looks like or how he plays.  If you look solely at the numbers, he’s the guy you want.

    Broncos suck period.

There is zero downside playing Tebow. If he wins, great. If he loses, well, they would probably lose anyway.

    The managements blows.

I wish that ther was some way the fans could get rid of Orten and start Tebow.Everyone should go on stricke and stay home when the broncos play at home. But that wont ever happen.I hate Kyle Orten and never thought I would hate a Broncos qb.Kyle jst gotts to go.

    Wow.

Where was the “When the Damn Head Coach thinks the kid’s FREAKING Ready!!”

    Option?

Not that we should have any that didn’t already follow McD to the Rams but DAMN I’ll be HAPPY to lose a few more bandwagon fans!!

No dis to you Tebow but I’m REALLY starting to hate your fans!!

    GO BRONCOS.

  • 12508

I agree with flip at this point. Time to get Tebow in the games and let everyone see just how bad this roster is. Give the fans what they want. We will still stink. We could see Tebow is not the answer. What wevreally need is a GM with a clue.

  • magster

Jon Heath only poses the question without stating his opinion. I demand to be told what to think!

Actually, I do have an opinion: Orton is a proven loser and it’s time for the hook now.

  • Noskills07

Here is a question I want EVERYONE to reply to please! Actually a couple thoughts/questions. First, when McD was hired and we went 6-0 what exactly were people saying about Orton then? Secondly I have stated but will re-state it when McD was fired call me CRAZY cause I know you guys will but I still for some reason liked McD and here’s why – He was young, and energetic even though he had a terrible season last year he did do one thing right and that was draft Tim Tebow. When Tebow was drafted I was shocked, more shocked than when Cutler was traded but at the same time I was very eager to see Tebow play… then the season went about it did and everybody including most of you guys on this post were asking for McD to leave and never comeback. Here’s another question then and it should make you think what you ask for… you wanted McD gone but didn’t like any of his picks except for Tebow, why would you assume that the new coach would take Tebow as his number one qb? As well, you guys are being very hypocritical by wanting the guy that drafted Tebow had faith in Tebow gone? Lol, its almost to funny, Im just as a huge bronco fan as any of you, I was born rocking the Orange and Blue but man you guys got what you asked for so put up with it, Fox… Elway exc.! The best thing you guys can do if you want a change is make it happen then… don’t go to the game.. protest what the heck ever, but all this crying junk for Tebow Time is ridiculous (I am not saying I don’t think he is the wrong choice) but what are you going to do – FYI this whole fans wanting Tebow and all the Tebow talk is hurting the broncos organization, I would even go as far as saying its worse then the spy gate scandal… #tired of the whole thing

I wish everyone could see through the Tebow thing. Look at the roster. Look at the drafts. Look at the free agents. Look at the free agents we missed on. Look at the salary cap. We got pushed around by the Raiders. Got lucky vs the Bengals. Loss to the Titans. If we played the Colts on the Seahawks on the road we would be dogs. This is the worst time to be a Broncos fan. This is all on Brian XANDERS and Pat BOWLEN. Bowlen has kept this guy around. For what? What has he done well? Everything on this team could be better. We have no running game,qb stinks, defense can’t make a stop, and the coaching staff is in the 90’s

if the broncos do lose to the packers and chargers and go into the bye week at 1-4 yes thats the best time to put him in give tebow 2 weeks to prepare for the dolphins and give him the rest of the year to see how he dose if we win with tebow then thats great if we lose at least bronco fans cant chant for him to play lol and the broncos would be in a position to draft andrew luck. in the end denver needs to realize were not going to to playoffs this year if we can get 3rd in the afc west i take that as a good year. but we need to give tebow a shot to play itd be dumb if we drafted another qb traded tebow and then risk the possibility of him being a great qb elsewhere after everything denver fans have gone trough with all the tebow drama. i am not 100% convinced yet that tebow is the man to lead denver back to the glory days but i am convinced that its not orton and damn sure not brady quinn so might as well give the kid a shot

  • Coach Taylor

I am not liking what I am seeing from a lot of Bronco fans these days.  People are jumping ship after three games.  Seems like everyone is playing monday morning coach like they are the second coming of Lombardi.  We as fans have no real idea what is going on inside the organization or the struggles that the coaches and management are dealing with.  But we rush to quick judgements about how we think one player can turn the team around.  But this is not realistic.  This team needs a lot more than one player and three games to turn it back into the winning and successful machine it was for so many years.  But nobody is willing to be patient, in this instant gratification society that we live in, we need quick fixes now.
The Broncos were a solid team for a LONG time before McD came along.  A lot of us, including myself (fan since 82) have never seen this team suck this bad for so long.  Its obvious the Bronco fans don’t know how to handle their team sucking.  And I hope that it we don’t have to watch this trend for too much longer.  I do have faith in Elway and Fox.  I am excited with the direction they are taking this team.  I believe in defense first and controlling the clock through running the ball.  I am going to give them some more time to right this ship before I start telling them how to do their job.  Maybe you “Coaches” should give these guys a break

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

Who’s excited for the Hockey Season to start and some Colorado Avalanche domination???

In other words… Who’s over this crap already and looking for something exciting to cheer for?

  • Rcsodak

How about none of the above? Trade tt and sign orton for 3yrs. End of soap opera.

  • Rcsodak

Good post. Its funny how ‘fans’ pertend to know more than coaches, ex-qb’s, etc.

  • broncos_tatted

Start Brady Quinn if they go 1-4. I can’t believe he’s not even mentioned on here. Start tebow next year if Brady is no good. Or even the last 5 games. Then Trade both Brady and KO for Draft picks and draft Luck to back Tim.

  • dbroncs24/7

Our offense was exciting with McDaniels don’t know what you were watching (apparently not B. Lloyd) , it was his lack of defensive/overall experience that screwed us

  • AtomicLeo

    +1 Rec’d

We have lost 2 games by a combined 7 points. That’s a huge improvement over the double digit beatings we had last year. And BTW, the Raiders, Bengals and Titans are not bottom feeder teams.

  • Vincemarine78

I think we should start a poll on why we think EFX isn’t starting Tebow…these are a few I came up with

    1.  They are tanking the season in hopes of drafting Luck.
    2.  Tebow really is that bad and they don’t want to lose trade value on him.
    3.  They don’t want to prove McD right (why he drafted Tebow).

  • George

Look Tebow had every chance to prove himself in the preseason and was 4th string QB not even the 3rd but you don’t pay the 4th stringer to the practices squad. This is a McDaniel problem I think he new he was not going to be their in Denver when he drafted Tebow so he could create all this bull sh@t and turmoil for the team. If we end up bench en Orton then we need to start Quinn he is the number 2 QB not Tebow and he not as good as Orton who will not be in Denver next year because we will trade up to get LUCK in the draft and then maybe this will all stop. If were lucky maybe we can trade Tebow after the season for oh a ^or & round pick next year draft.      Remember MacDaniel screw us by moving up in the draft to get Tebow who would not have even been drafted until late in the draft and there for already cut from what ever team that would have drafted him and that would have been it!!

  • Redna

    Thanks Coach

News flash genius, every coach uses practice as an “excuse” to pick starters.

  • Anonymous

Avoid reality much?  Please go ahead and be stupid enough to invoke logic then prove your point by fantasizing about a massive anti-Tebow conspiracy.

  • Anonymous

    Touche!

  • Anonymous

McDaniels drafted him the organization is stuck with him.

  • Anonymous

Except that Quinn and Orton are in the final years of their contracts.

  • King

Lol.  The Bengals and Titans are the definition of bottom-feeders !

  • Anonymous

#1 & #3 are iffy.  They can always claim they took McD’s longshot and made him into a NFL QB.  They can tank just as easily with Tebow under center and boost his trade value at the same time.

  • King

Whether you liked McD or not, his biggest mistake was trading Cutler for Orton.

We all know that Orton can’t play in this league, especially when it counts, or we would be 3-0 not 1-2

  • Anonymous

Please.  Three decade plus sellout streak.   We showed up long before he got here and we’ll be here long after he’s gone.

I’m so f’ing sick and tired of people acting like Tebow is the end all be all of the Denver Broncos.  It’s nonsense.
