As NFL fans we rarely hear of players willing to take paycuts. Also as fans we rarely see players with such high character as Brian Dawkins.

Dawkins came to the Broncos two seasons ago signing a five-year, worth $17 million. The deal included $7.2 million in guaranteed money. In the upcoming season, Dawkins is currently scheduled to receive $6 million.

According to the Denver Post Dawkins knows that he might just have to take a pay cut to stay with the Broncos.

“When I signed this deal I knew what it was,” Dawkins said Thursday while watching 18 of his Bronco teammates and 27 other local professionals work out with trainer Loren Landow at Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch. “It was basically a two-year deal. I knew after a couple years there was a balloon (mechanism) and we most likely would have to restructure. That’s no big deal to me.”

Brian Dawkins never ceases to amaze. With a slew of rookies and young guys ready to compete for his spot, Dawkins will have to keep amazing. I myself think he’s more the capable of the task.

What do you think Bronco fans? Will Brian Dawkins be back for another season with a decrease in pay?

In short, yes.  Although the amount of room under the cap with the new CBA remains a question, I believe and hope the Broncos are the type of organization that will do right by a classy player like Dawkins.

He is deserving of bringing his career to a fitting end and he should be allowed to end it on his own terms within the length of his current contract.  I believe he will be the starter this September, but will yield some of his playing time to one or more younger players over the course of the season.

Yes, Dawkins will be back with a restructured contract.  He will mentor Rahim Moore.  It's great to see maturity and honor from a player who knows his career is winding down.  He doesn't seem to want to undeservedly cash in on a career mostly played in Philadelphia.  Why should the Broncos pay him a “Legacy” contract when that Legacy benefited a different team.  Bravo for Mr. Dawkins, Bravo.

Personally I don't think the Broncos are in a position to waste cap space for sentimental reasons.  We still have a number of holes to fill and giving a 38 year old safety $2-3M doesn't help our cause one bit.  Sure it might be a feel good thing but that feeling won't last long once he is getting burned left and right on the field.  I'd rather see Rahim Moore on the field getting experience then on the sidelines being “mentored”.

Dawk is no fool.  He knows he's basically finished and that if he doesn't take a giant paycut, he's gone.

  • crazykid

I bet he has one season left in the tank. Just let him play it out on a cheaper contract, then let the “new guys” step up.

And if he does have a rough season, I can see him playing a Rod Smith-type role, where he basically becomes a coach for younger guys.

  • anthony33

He deserves to be treated with ultimate respect.  Act with integrety Broncos.

  • anthony33

oops… the should be integrity.  %%$^#& hate trying to make a serious, simple comment and F it up with a mis-spelling.

hey guys, i just wanted to share this affadavit from the Perrish Cox investigation with you:
    http://media.trb.com/media/acr
Cox is surely giulty, so hopefully my man Syd'Quan will step up and fill Cox's starting role.

  • Perrish Cox

Oh come on guys…there are other ways my semen could have wound up in her vagina!

With a mature coach in line, some mature players realize the writing on the wall. Mc&@^#%$$$%Daniels so dastardly messed up this one proud and successful team, some players with a degree can do the math. Brian should concede and Bolen ( he's the one who hired McScrewball ) need to invest two years of transitional rebuilding. Rebuild by position and youth and theres no better way than using the  ” Old Dawg-kins ” to player coach from within.

While on the surface it would certainly point to Cox being guilty as hell.  However, after seeing what took place at the Casey Anthony trial I would say hold tight.  I think it will be very difficult to prove 1) that she was drugged and 2) she was impregnated that night.

From reading the story I would the key witnesses are Damarius Thomas and Vaughn.  If they come forward, do the right thing, and tell the complete truth, it could be lights out for Cox.

In McDaniels defense, Shanahan had already put the knife in the chest. McD just ripped a bigger hole by trying to pull it out.

Denver's Executive Director of Media Relations, Patrick Smyth, sent out this statement on behalf of the Broncos:

“The allegations involving Perrish Cox are extremely serious and
troubling to our organization. We will continue to monitor this
    situation very closely.”

Any speculation that the Broncos are going to scrimmage with Dallas before the first preseason game like in past years?

  • MrEast

No idea. Those details probably haven't been able to be figured out during the lock out. It will be interesting to see the frantic shuffle teams will do with what time they have left (IF, BIG IF, the deal gets done).
