As Jim Harbaugh nearly turned into the Brett Favre of coaching before finally accepting the head coach position with the San Francisco 49ers, the one question at the top of Broncos fans minds is still nowhere near close to being answered:

WHO WILL THE BRONCOS HEAD COACH BE IN 2011?

So far, we have seen Harbaugh’s hat thrown in and then out of the ring, Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey cancel his interview, and then interim coach Eric Studesville and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell schedule interviews for Sunday.

That’s not exactly what I would call a stellar group to choose from.

Still, there is hope. Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway has made it known that he prefers someone who either has previous head coaching experience in the NFL or is an ‘up and coming’ assistant and/or coordinator.

Fewell served as interim head coach for the Bills last season and Studesville coached the final four games for the Broncos this year.  Neither one really turned heads in their audition periods and both don’t seem likely to get the job in the end.

Thus, I submit two names for Elway’s approval.  One he coincidentally mentioned today that he would talk to and another that I really think Elway SHOULD talk to.

Those names are Houston Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison and Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman.

Yes, both are offensive minded coaches and a fair share of the Broncos woes lay on the other side of the ball.  Still, they do have Tim Tebow to develop and need a coach with a strong record of working with quarterbacks.

Let’s take a look at Dennison first.

This man is no stranger to Broncos fans.   Dennison was an assistant with the Broncos dating all the way to 1995 and served with the team until Mike Shanahan was dismissed following the 2008 season.  He started as an offensive assistant in 1995 and 1996, coached the special teams from 1997-2000, coached the offensive line from 2001-2005 and was offensive coordinator from 2006-2008.

Oh yeah, and Dennison was also a linebacker with the Broncos from 1982-1990.

Elway knows the man quite well.  He worked with him as a player and knows his capabilities as a coach.  The chemistry between the two men should return rather easily.

But what about Tebow? Well, until he was traded to Chicago, Jay Cutler was a budding superstar under Dennison and the Broncos offense was always one of the best in the game.  Some of this credit obviously has to go to Shanahan but Dennison was far more than a figurehead on the coaching staff.

In Houston, Dennison turned Matt Schaub into one of the league’s elite passers after he came over from the Atlanta Falcons.  Tebow has all the intangibles a coach dreams of and also has a lot of God-given athletic ability. A pairing of Dennison with the now second year Broncos quarterback seems to be a match made in heaven.

All that said, there are still some downsides to making Dennison the man in Dove Valley.

Even though he played linebacker, he has never coached on the defensive side of the ball.  He would need a VERY strong defensive coordinator to help turn the Broncos’ unit around and with Wade Phillips ironically now in Houston, there are not many strong candidates out there save maybe Mike Singletary.   The Broncos also could try and get Dom Capers away from the Green Bay Packers, but it sounds like coach Mike McCarthy is hell bent on keeping the defensive staff together and who can blame him?

Dennison is also lacking head coaching experience that Elway said would be preferred in the Broncos’ next head guy. He’s been the offensive coordinator under two offensive minded head coaches.  Gary Kubiak and Shanahan both called the plays in Houston and Denver respectively, and Dennison would likely be doing the play calling himself in Denver. Would he be up to the task?

Now let’s take a look at Sherman.

Yes, Sherman is a college coach but let’s not forget he coached the Green Bay Packers for six seasons with the Packers ending up in the postseason in four of them.  Sherman is an experienced play caller and also ironically served as offensive coordinator under Kubiak in Houston before taking the head job at Texas A&M.

Some say Sherman’s success in Green Bay came as a result of having Favre under center.  That’s all well and good, but the cast around Favre was not much better than average and Sherman was able to get all he could out of them.  Favre too had a unique talent of getting the best out of average players, something a certain Broncos quarterback also did in his time at Florida.

As someone who lives in Wisconsin, I can tell you firsthand how often Sherman talked about the Packers tradition and the history of the franchise and how he wanted his teams to fit in with those great teams of the past.  After listening to Elway’s introductory press conference and hearing him talk about how he wanted the organization to go back to how it was and to once again embrace the winning tradition that was established before McDaniels arrived, it immediately reminded me of Sherman.

In Green Bay, Sherman had the dual role of general manager and head coach for four years and while the team’s record was outstanding for four years, his botched draft picks that included such busts as Jamal Reynolds and Ahmad Carroll that the team eventually had to bring in Ted Thompson to replace Sherman as GM to pick up the pieces.

Would Sherman want the same dual role in Denver? Not likely. His recruiting skills at Texas A&M have been under scrutiny the last couple years and it seems like Sherman is much better off just coaching the team.

Like Dennison, Sherman also has his drawbacks.  He too would need a strong defensive coordinator at his side.  Sherman’s defenses in Green Bay collapsed at the worst possible time preventing his otherwise talented teams from reaching their full potential.  Sherman prefers the 4-3 and with Denver running a 3-4 currently and with personnel currently equipped to run it, he might need to change his philosophy on the defensive side of the ball to work in Denver.

Of course, this is all speculation at this point. I have complete faith in Elway, general manager Brian Xanders and owner Pat Bowlen to make the right choice for the Broncos going forward.  They learned a painful lesson with the messy Josh McDaniels era and I believe they can and will return the organization to the standing it had before McDaniels took the job.

There are obviously other candidates out there.  Jon Gruden may finally decide to return to coaching and he would look very attractive to a team with a talented but raw young quarterback.  Bill Cowher is still out there, but his demands for final say over the roster like will keep him out of Denver.  Then there’s the always silent “mystery candidate” that no one talked about that ends up getting the job.

So who will it be for the Broncos? I have no idea.  I’ve given a few suggestions here but it is up to Elway and Co. to make the decision.

Stay tuned Broncos fans. The fun is just beginning.

No offensive minded coaches!!! We need a good defensive minded coach with a strong OC to help Tebow along. Denver has to take it's time and wait for the coordinators from the playoff teams to become available.

  • Ryan K.

Now no one come to my house and burn it down, but I think Eric Mangini would be worth a look. The situation in CLE was a no-win once Holmgren got there, and his time in NY was ruined as he made the same mistakes McDaniels made here; trying to impersonate Belichek.

But now he seems more comfortable in his own skin, and is a little older and wiser. I am not saying he is the right guy, but I would at least look into it.

  • http://twitter.com/burke_kris Kris Burke

The only issue is WHO out of the playoff teams would be good? Capers in Green Bay, Christensen with Indy, Mularkey in Atlanta all seem iffy to me.

  • http://twitter.com/burke_kris Kris Burke

I want nothing to do with any more people from the Belichick tree. Mangini was a dictator in NY and in Cleveland. No way.

  • Moises T Galvan

Rick Dennison was with Houston for a year. Matt Schaub has been a star for like 3 years. He didn't do anything for Shaub, it was all Kubiak.

  • Steve

Why is Brian Billick not being mentioned at all? His defenses with the Ravens were always beastly. Plus he has previous head coaching experience and has even won a Super Bowl. I think, different from Cowher, he would simply be happy to be coaching again, rather than requiring total control over the franchise. I'd much rather have him than a former coordinator from a non-contending team.

  • Vince_marine

Maybe not as the HC, but possibly as the OC.

  • Vince_marine

    Capers would be good IMO.

  • Reverendofrock

I agree 100%! Defense all the way!!

  • Nisse

as the OC? think u mean the DC

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Brian Billick was so bad as a color commentator for CBS, it makes me question whether he has what it takes to run a team on gameday.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Gregg Williams. Already being considered per Xanders on Sirius today.

  • NMBronc

    Rivera?

  • mark2112

Texas A&M runs a 3-4 Defense under Sherman so why would he run a 4-3 in the Pro's?

  • Jj

A&M are getting their butts kicked

  • 5280

I agree Steve. Brian Billick would be a great option. maybe if we dont ask him to beHC he can at least consider being DC. I also agree with both sherman and Dennison. i think both are solid coaches and can at least get us to the ternament each year consistantly. Look, just because a coach is an offencive minded guy doesn't mean he doesn't focus on Defence AT ALL. It's really about the DC when u talk about defence. and being as Elway hold all the power here, he can easily split defencive power to the DC regardless. I also think singletary for DC would help a lot regardless whos HC. I think if we could land greg williams for HC that would be awsome. either way you look at it we have a lot of options. i just think whoever we get has to be a QB man. Tebow need a lot more tutoring and we need guys who want to take on the job. guys who are excited about him as much as we are. i think we should at least keep Ben McD around to be a QB coach unless theres another QB coach out there who is as passionate about Tebow as he is.

  • rct930

Agreed. Billick is a great coach and leader.

  • Mike

I'd rather see Fassel than Billick!!

  • TexansFan

As it's already been stated, but I wanted to reiterate the fact that Matt Schaub was only under Dennison for ONE year, and he was more of a figure head because Kubiak was the one calling the plays. Dennison did nothing for Schaub, if you look at the stats he actually threw for 400yards less this year than he did last year.

  • WhidbeyBronco

bad head coach… above avg but not great DC
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G

  • WhidbeyBronco

Agreed! Don't love to hear the guy speak.

  • WhidbeyBronco

Billick is an OFFENSIVE coach for the record.

  • WhidbeyBronco

    none of the above.
Our guy is out there though.

  • jdkchem

What is it with the obsession for a former DC as head coach? Why would anyone want Dom Capers as head coach? He was abysmal every time he got an opportunity.
I was on the Dennison band wagon some time ago.

  • Doom92

I hope they will interview John Fox. He is a Defensive guy and has a ton of experience (Was Fassel's D-Coord)… Good coach to say the least. Yeah I know, less than stellar with Carolina but the had 2 NFC games and went to a Super Bowl… Second time around bounce back???

  • WhidbeyBronco

Here ya go with a real list.

    B Cowher
    Marty S
    Jimmy Johnson
    Bob Stoops
    Mularkey
    Rob Ryan ;)
    Brian Schottenheimer

  • http://twitter.com/burke_kris Kris Burke

He ran a 4-3 in the pros with Green Bay. I don't know if he ever considered changing, but I am guessing he may prefer the 4-3 in the NFL

  • http://twitter.com/burke_kris Kris Burke

Possible. Although it seems like the Bears defense revolves around Urlacher. They struggled mightily without him in 2009

  • http://twitter.com/burke_kris Kris Burke

And look how inept the Ravens offense was with him in charge. Even in the Super Bowl season, the offense was bad.

  • http://twitter.com/burke_kris Kris Burke

Too bad Spags is gone already. He would have been a perfect fit and I know Bowlen interviewed him before hiring McDaniels.

  • http://twitter.com/burke_kris Kris Burke

Completely forgot about Fox actually. Don't know how, but he'd be a good fit in Denver. Richardson, the Panthers owner, is a total cheapskate (something Bowlen is not) and he and Elway would get along well.

    I could see it.

  • anthony33

Elway has twitted they are looking at Dirk Koetter. You have got to be kidding me… the VP of operations twitting who's on deck to be interview. And to boot it's a lame OC.

I think Elway is completely over his head and Ellis has made yet another enormous blunder. If it's not clear yet, it soon will be… the Elway hire was to appease the fans (not this one) and there is no money to hire a decent coach. The list of candidates, expect Mularkey, has been beyond weak. Didn't think it could get any worse, but appears to be headed that way. Hope I am wrong.

    Here's a prediction… Studesvile is the HC.

  • 5280

anthony don't hope. ur already wrong. u couldn't get more wrong. except for the kirk guy, the list is awsome. how could any one not want greg williams on their team in some fashoin. mularky would be my pick as it stand right now. Ull put ur foot in ur mouth when we're in the playoffs 1 or 2 years from now.

  • Richard Montour

and if u watch NFL network with the rest of us FOOTBALL fans ud know that brian billick is one of the more insitful analists on the network, especially on the coaches show. even if he weren't, what on earth does that have to do with coaching the game of football? the man took the ravens to the superbowl and the playoffs many times and he had a hand in coaching one of the best defences in league history. gee what an idiot huh?

  • 5280

and i have to add one more thing. Elway told NFL network that he plans on interviewing Ron rivera also. how long before some of u jokers start flip floppin ur opinions again and saying how stupid that is? ill keep reiterating: PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE!!! just be patient and have faith.

  • NMBronc

Patience is the key as most of the good hires are leading teams in the playoffs right now. And we will get there Anthony. No worries.

  • http://twitter.com/burke_kris Kris Burke

I'll throw another name out there:

    Rob Ryan.

  • Ryan K.

I do find it it quite revealing of my people's true opinion of Tebow, in the lack of quality candidates that so far want to interview for the job. Just sayin…

  • anthony33

Until I see a Mularkey, Williams, Harbaugh (now taken), Rivera, Maranelli, Billick, Cowher, Gruden, Schottenmeimer actually show up for an interview… I'm not buying it.

Dennison would have been a good choice, especially with Nolan here, the last time around when many pieces were already here. Not so sure now, but I've always liked him.

  • Dbaumga797

Yeah…heaven forbid he be open with the fans (unlike the last guy in charge). Why shouldn't he Tweet who's on deck? And an interview does not equal a hire…they should be looking at ALL options at this point! You don't know anything until you talk to the guy.

  • Rob_Bronco

For the love of Christ why is no one talking to Ron Rivera? His Defenses have CRUSHED the Broncos and the majority of teams over the past five years. Pair him with a strong O coordinator and you can start building the team evenly from both sides. We've been terrible on the defensive side of the ball for longer than I care to remember and it's time to bring that back. Perennial playoff teams like the Ravens, Steelers, Chargers, and Giants have defenses that can carry them when their offense struggles (yes I realize that two of those teams missed the playoffs this year but they both finished with winning records).

  • Danno

Brian Billick as head coach. But our bigger challenge is OC?! If we have to keep paying McD, we should probably get some work out of him. I am not saying OC, but I am saying QB coach for Tebow, Quinn, and Orton in that order.

And for the love of God, sign Champ to safety money and put him in Hill's place and draft d-line with our first pick.

  • yeahyouknowme

you might want to be careful with throwing the “idiot” phrase around until you get your spell check fixed. Just sayin'…

  • NMBronc

Please not Schottenmeimer or Dennison. Pewell was on my list early on. The problem for us arm chair folks is truly knowing which are strong leaders and which are strong Coordinators, without participating in the interview process. This is why I like having Elway there. Clearly, Ellis missed badly on the last leader of the Broncos.

  • Vince_marine

Your wish came true…They are reporting that Denver is seeking approval to interview him. I think we would be good for us as well.

  • Vince_marine

Anthony33, it looks bad now but once the playoff teams start falling out then he will be interviewing them. Right now there isn't a whole lot out there to choose from. I think he has to be patient with this whole process to ensure we get a good head coach who ever that may be. Hey, they are going to interview John Fox. Not a bad guy to bring in. You thoughts?

  • areferee

Studesville is a good man, but there is no way he is ready for HC. Dennison would be the hire before Eric. I hope he remains on the staff, but I don't believe he's ready for anything other than a position coach.

So far, based on what Elway has stated previously; ie, defense oriented HC with previous experience, John Fox is the only announced candidate. Some of the other names may be being considered as coordinators.

I think it's a little early to be judging Elway and his growing pains. So far, he is living up to his word in being open about what is going on. I would rather have it that way than the way it was under McDaniels, when we always had to guess and weren't sure he was being truthful.

With honesty, sometimes things look a little embarrassing.

  • crazykid

Did anyone watch the Cotton Bowl last night? WE definately should get Von Miller w/ our 2nd round pick. The dude was awesome

  • Doom92

I'm not sure how “real” this list would be but interesting…

    B Cowher –> Never happen!!!
    Marty S –> Awesome choice, I'd like this one…
Jimmy Johnson –> Gone way to long and quit on Miami. His gig is way to sweet where he is…
Bob Stoops –> WHY?!? The only one on the list I didnt like…
Mularkey –> Would be an excellent hire but he pretty much said “thanks but no thanks”…
Rob Ryan ;) –> I hope the wink was for real…lol.
Brian Schottenheimer –> I'd like him if he came with Daddy…

Add John Fox to this list and its not bad. I like them more than Dennison or Sherman…

  • Rcsodak

I almost blew my coffee out my nose when you said it was Dennison that made Schaub what he is, today.
Dennison is a pleeb. He goes where he's told, and does what he's instructed. Neither of which, is he more than average at, imo.
Kyle Shanahan had more to do with Houston's offense than Dennison did, and that was only as a figurehead, as Kubes was for Shanny.
And Sherman? Gimmeabreak! He took a playoff team, handed to him, and turned it into crap.
Singletary? What has he done that shows he can scheme a defense? He went from LB coach to HC and failed miserably! He needs to go back to position coach and work his way up to DC, imo. We've already witnessed what happens when you're 'handed' a title.
