John Elway‘s oft-rumored return to the Denver Broncos is finally at hand.

Elway won’t be pulling a Brett Favre and returning to the football field — instead, he’ll be working the front office, becoming a top executive for the franchise in which he spent his entire Hall of Fame career.

The Denver Post reports that Elway will be hired as the Broncos’ Vice President of Football Operations

“If and when we reach an agreement with John Elway, (owner Pat Bowlen) is very confident that John’s intelligence, his leadership, business savvy, his knowledge of the game, and competitive fire — plus the respect that everyone in this building will have for him — will make us better right away,” said Joe Ellis, the Broncos’ chief operating officer.

The Post notes that this job title — Vice President of Football of Operations — is the same title Mike Shanahan held in addition to that of “head coach.” Indeed, Elway will be an instrumental part of the day-to-day functioning of the Denver Broncos moving forward.

It’s a bold move, with motives going far beyond the PR buzz being generated. After being on the fence about it at first, I’m all for it. Elway has the football experience and savvy the current top guns — Bowlen and Ellis — haven’t been able to demonstrate of late. Now let’s find a real GM and coach and set up this franchise right.

Broncos bringing back Elway not just a PR move

I'll have to take a wait and see attitude on this one. Love Elway the player, but not so sure about Elway the business/personnel guy.

He's been away from it long enough to have tried several things and learn (espeically with the Crush). How much of that will translate to his new role… only time will tell.

The good news is there is someone that understands what this team means to the city and it's fans. My hope is he is committed and understands this is not a part time or figure head thing.

I'm a little surprised at how much power and authority Elway will be given from day one. His track record in organizational management is certainly good, but after the last 4-5 years I'm a little leery of giving too much power to one person in the Broncos organization. I'll be happy if he ends up being half as good at football operations as he was at football, but one doesn't beget the other. Ultimately, I think this team has really suffered from lack of quality talent evaluation. The question is, does bringing Elway in help the team in terms of trying to build a respected franchise through the draft? We shall see…

no problem with Elway being part of the organisation, but I'll tell you what annoys me the most about this – no its not the fact that he can't play defense its the fact that having someone like Elway in place 2 years ago would've made McDaniels a much better coach. Still you live and you learn.

Anyway, Tom Coughlin may be looking for work tomorrow – any chance Elway could be there to meet him in the Giants parking lot?

woohooooooooooo!! love it! He has been involved with the Broncs from day one..only makes sense that he would take over upper management….and yes, he's a very profitable businessman…PSYCHED!

I like this move a great deal. Stanford, Super Bowl QB/Business Man, Hall of Fame, Owner/Management of AFL Team and now he has come home with all that experience.

Not sure which piece everyone is concerned about. We certainly cannot do much worse over the next two years.

It looks like Jim Harbaugh is going to be our new HC. Elway is going to talk to him this week about it and Adam Schefter just reported this http://profootballtalk.nbcspor…/

I saw this as well, but there are so many rumors floating. If we go Off HC, then we need to get a good DC…maybe Marvin Lewis.

  • TheTroglodyte

Harbaugh seems like he knows what he is going pretty well on both sides of the ball and more importantly he seems smart enough to look for a DC that knows more than he does to run the show, so I'm pretty confident with him if that's where we end up.

I hope and pray that if we don't get him we find a defensive guy for HC.

Anyone that would question this at this point is nuts. Elway is a winner. We need winners around this team. Bring em all back.Sharpe, Romo, and Davis. Get em on board. We need people who know what it takes. Lets get it turned around. Run the ball and play defense. If we are stuck with Tebow we need to get him ALOT of help. Most important thing will be the GM. We need players!

  • Kingpins10

“Stuck with Tebow” ? Are you serious?

If we actually had a defense that didn't play flag football, we would've beat the Chargers today. With a D, the sky is the limit. Can't win many games in the NFL giving up over 30 ppg. I don't care how good your O is.

  • skipali

Will be interesting to see what Elway and co. do w/Tebow…build an offense around an unconventional, but talented QB (valueing all those “intangibles”) or look to draft/trade for someone like Luck or Mallett, if they decide to go out this year? Having been around coaching my whole life, have to say, great attitudes are NOT all that common in a world of astronomical salaries. How 'bout football basics like controling the line of scrimmage (both O and D) for a change–both of Denver's lines are the definition of porous

love the commentary guys. Tebow, in my opinion, most definitely will stay. he's got some issues to work out, but u can't ignore his raw talent, intelligence on the field, and his leadership. Elway has been trying to get a piece of the denver broncos for a while now. im so relieved he finally got his spot with the organization. Harbaugh will be a great fit. i heard that he went to stanfords bowl game to be an honorary captain and planned to sit down with him then, and discuss an interview. I'm quite alright with that. A lot of people think that its just another rookie head coach and the broncos shouldn't take their chances on another young guy with no experience, but theres one difference between McD and harbaugh and that is the assignment of their duties. Josh was givin power over everything and that wont be the case with harbaugh. He'll have the watchfull eye of a hall of famer, a GM, and a COO. harbaugh won't have to be “smart enough to get a DC” cuz that wont be his call anyway. Elway will bring in a legit DC. i really think they need to look for greg robinson again. what happened to him? he vanished after we won the super bowl. this organization is going to florish over the next couple of years and i cant wait!
