Josh McDaniels‘s reputation as an NFL coach has largely been built off the quality of quarterbacks he has coached with the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos.

Now that reputation is beginning to shift to reflect the quantity of quarterbacks he coaches instead.

After the Denver Broncos selected Florida quarterback Tim Tebow in the first round of the NFL Draft Friday, the Broncos have a surplus of signal-callers. McDaniels now has four quarterbacks under his tutelage: Tebow, starter Kyle Orton, recent trade acquisition Brady Quinn, and 2009 sixth-round draft pick Tom Brandstater.

While McDaniels was quick to reaffirm Orton as his starter — Quinn is the only other to have started an NFL game, and he’s 2-7 — he wouldn’t rule out a possible changing at the helm if someone impresses in training camp.

“Our starting quarterback is Kyle Orton,” McDaniels said. “If somebody performs better than Kyle Orton then that’s going to have to change but right now it hasn’t and we’ll see what happens as we move forward.”

“That’s not even something that I’m thinking about,” Tebow said. “I’m thinking about just going in there and learning the offense, competing, working hard and just being the first one in and the last one to leave. And showing them (the Broncos) that I love this, I love what I do and thank you so much for taking me and I’m not going to let you down.”

“Now we have a deep group of quarterbacks and we expect the competition to be incredible,” said McDaniels. “It hasn’t changed anything in terms of our depth chart right now. We’re looking for that position to be the best player on our team if we can make it that way. Competition is only going to make each one of those players better and that’s what we expect him to come in and provide us with.”

This ambiguous “somebody” technically leaves the door open for Quinn or even Brandstater to supplant Orton as the starter, but McDaniels didn’t just invest three Top-100 picks to watch Tebow warm the bench. This “Mile High Messiah,” as the Wikipedia community was quick to name the navy-blue-donning Tebow, will be given every chance to succeed.

It’s very likely that won’t matter in 2010, and Orton will hold the reigns while Tebow learns the nuances of the pro game. But given a chance — and based on the former Heisman trophy winner’s renowned character and work ethic — Tebow will take off and run with it. I’m not about to underestimate what this kid can do.

Tim Tebow: Denver Broncos select QB in first round [BroncoTalk]

  • mikebirty

My money's on Tebow taking the first snap at Jacksonville.

And running an option, pitching to Know-Mo for a one yard gain and then walking to the sideline

And if I am right, I'll be predicting lottery numbers next

  • mangeletti

Brandon Marshall: we love the player, hate the person…
Tim Tebow: we hate the player, love the person…

Honestly, I think probably Orton is the best QB of the bunch. [covers his head]

To me, Tebow is Bradlee Van Pelt 2.0

  • Scottey

Glad to see your “rooting” for my team!

  • http://broncoszone.blogspot.com/ Jon

Orton should start this year. Then let him go as a FA, or see if we can get some in a trade for him. Then next year let Quinn and Tebow battle it out. The Broncos shouldn't rush Tim into anything this year, just use him in gadget and short yardage plays.

    Looking forward to the season!

  • HOPE

Time tebow will be a grate qb in the nfl.He like Jay Cutler thier both good in the pocket and run over tacklers.Tebow more accurate the Cutler and way better person.Grat Move Mc daniels.Im on the Mc d. waggon now.I love the first d raft pick too Demaryius thomas like B-marsh but with speed.

  • herc_rock

We're the laughingstock of the league right now. And rightly so.

  • TommyBoy18

Tebow will be a great QB in the NFL, I'm just not sure that time is now. I want to see him prove himself in the preseason and show the Broncos (and Denver) that he is here to play football. I don't want to see those three draft picks to go to waste. I have faith in him and believe he can do well.

  • alm034

I think they carry four QBs – three traditional and one whateveryoucallTebow. I see him coming in on short yardage or option plays, very situational and adding a kink to game planning for the other team. However, if they carry only three total QBs, I think Brandstater beats out Quinn, but I'm not sure if that's because I think highly of Brandstater or lowly of Quinn.

  • guest

    this article=nothing new.

it's been mcd's line since he got here that every position is up for grabs every year, no matter what. you play better than the guy in front of you, you play in his spot.

  • zdoc

I'm concerned about his blind side.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

    Lol, cracked me up.

  • TheTroglodyte

Maybe the laughing stock of Jamie Dukes. Be mindful of transmitting YOUR feelings onto others young padawan. Tim Tebow is an unknown like there has never been in the NFL, EVER. A guy who “can't pass but outpassed every QB in NCAA history. A guy who has so much charisma and leadership he almost single handedly willed the Gator's to many victory's. A guy who is so tough, he WAS their short yardage and goal line back.

Hell, I was probably the most anti-draft Tebow in the 1st round guy in the U.S. but even I am not blind to what he might turn out to be. Obviously he did well enough reading defenses in Josh McDaniels private workout to have potential their too.

  • TheTroglodyte

Why? Tim Tebow has now started throwing with his right arm so Clady could get his back. Done!

  • Dan

    1. Is our owner catering to the huge religious right fan base in Colorado? This appears to be a business move that may be genius if Tebow eventually starts and can win in the playoffs…Especially if our owner is setting up his sale of our team in 3 – 6 years.

    2. Our draft team gets an A- for getting picks for trading down in a high quality draft, but that same draft team gets a D- for what they are giving-up to trade-up for players that are going to be there easily anyway! Our owner needs to bring in somebody (maybe a world series of poker champ) to oversee the deals we are making to trade-up…We need a guy there! Why hook-up the Pats (a 4th) and the Ravens (2nd, 3rd, and a 4th swap)? Why! Why! Why! That is why our league is laughing at us.

  • confused in Littleton

Best case he will be comparable to Jake Plummer and worst case he will run around like Rick Mirer. Honestly at this point I would take Jake Plummer over what we have now.
PS Woody Paige is ecstatic over this pick (this is not a good sign)

  • herc_rock

Yeah, you're totally right. The only criticism I'm hearing about the pick is coming from Jamie Dukes.

Is that why noshow gets the ball?, More like if you are one of the guys Shannie picked your job is up for grabs but, If I drafted you I will let you fumble a few more times before we make a decision.
With all of the juvenile public tantrums and irrational confidence in bad players I sometimes wonder if we would notice a difference if McDaniels and Dan Hawkins had a Freaky Friday

  • TheTroglodyte

Well Michael Lombardi said the Packers were thought to be taking Thomas, so that is why we moved up for him.

The Bills were trying to trade up to that same spot to get Tebow, we were just willing to pay a little more than what they were.

Seeing that we moved up both times to beat out competition for those guys and we didn't lose a single pick to do it, I would say you should do your homework a little better before you complain. But hey, if YOU want to FEEL like we are the joke of the league, you don't need Tebow being drafted to feel that way. You will always find a reason because that is who you are. :)

  • goliathslayer24

Hey Dan – I am dumbfounded at your first point…it smacks of bigotry. It has no merit as to the thought process of the pick or Tebow's talent or Leadership skills. Let's keep the conversation about football!

Jake plummer? Rick mirer? Dude Tim Tebow looks, plays, runs, IS nothing like either one of those guys. If you don't like Tim, just say so. Then go watch the Lions for the next decade, cuz Tim will be here winning titles!!
Check the stats in college, against the absolute best defenses. While you're learning dummy, look up CHAMPIONSHIP winners of the past four years, and tell us what you've learned!! If you have the spare time, also look up HEISMAN TROPHIES, and sprinkle in the knowledge even you must have about Tims' great attitude, selfless team play, and flawless off the field lifestyle. You sheep…

Jamie Dukes of the “Big News Coming Out of Denver” BS lore? Windbag, hack of an analyst, less than mediocre NFL player – who is he to dissect any ones skills?

    Career games played: 124
    Career games started: 62

Shutup Dukes – this guy is a Bronco hater and always has s–t to say on Denver.

  • spokanefan

Transition from one h coach to another takes time. I'm willing to give Mc.D the benifit of the dought for now, as well as his line up. Go Bronco's!

  • confused in littleton

Tims' great attitude, selfless team play, and flawless off the field lifestyle.
None of these attributes will replace skill.

Fact is that Tim excelled at being a running quarterback that played in a spread offense neither of which applies to the pro game.
He the size and arm strength but needs to learn an entirely different skill set, don't expect him to see the field unless we start 0-6

  • isaiahkyler

Tom Brandstater’s is going to the practice squad, you can take that to the bank! Orton won’t be resigned at the end of the season, he will want too much money and there is not enough value.

For a QB who give's you consistent production, but nothing spectacular or game changing, I do not think that the Broncos are going to invest any amount of significant money in a QB who cannot change the game. The Marshall ordeal showed me that money can trump talent. In a game where finances play a big role in the way a team designed and who actually makes the team … My money says that this is Orton's last season! Or better yet he may get traded before this weekend is out!

  • Iwasfn47

What skill set doesn't Tebow posses to make him successful?

Does anyone have anything to complain about other than the mechanics thing they probably don't even really understand, but like to say about draft QBs because it makes them sound knowledgeable?

Please, point them out, and tell me why he can't make the dink and dunk screen throws that Orton relied on last year? I'm not drinkin the Tebow juice yet, but tell me why I shouldn't think he could build up to being what Orton was last season? I watched a lot of his games in college and though never a FL guy he played a winning brand of football in a system more similar to ours than people think.

  • DoradoDave

Controversy? What controversy? After dumping a QB and WR that were worshiped by the fans this will be nothing for McD. Tebow has the credentials to be anything he wants to. Now the new WR looks better to me than the old WR. Plus1 Is or can Tebow better than Orton or Quin. Bet on it!
    It's going to be interesting.

  • confused in Littleton

I checked Heisman Trophy and college championship and came up with Vince Young

  • Dan

I must apologize…I did not know that we were in bidding wars with Buffalo and Greenbay. That said, seems like a lot to give up for Tebow, Smith, and Quinn (TE). The pattern does not disturb you?

  • Dan

I am sorry that I seemed like a religious bigot…I am not. I just wonder about the potential motivation on the business side of the transaction (e.g. sale of jerseys, more fans, higher potential asking price for the team in the not too distant future)? Why is that conversation not about football? If it was your team would you have traded all those picks to get him, and wouldn't you also factor in the potential revenue increase that Tebow would bring into the organization?

  • flbronc

seen a billion highlights of him here in florida. what i dont like is that he floats balls, seldom has a lot of 'zip' on passes and they wobble like crazy. he's working to speed up his delivery- which was a main concern of mine. both of those are key concerns in the dink and dunk game. you cant float a slant- it has to be released quickly and on a rope. the ball cant wobble on the quick routes- if it does it has a far greater chance to bounce off a reciever- which is especially a bad thing when in the middle of the field. he has a stronger arm than orton, but about the same degree of downfield accuracy imo.

i think he looks to run too early for the pro game, and will get himself in trouble. i dont think he will find success in the running the ball like he did in college- when you look at the highlights of him running people over it is kids from vandy, or ky, or other lower rung sec schools who dont put dl's and lb's in the nfl. he is going to learn he cant plow over the nfl's starting defenses like he did in school.

that being said, do i think it's a lost cause? no, actually i'm warming up on the idea. you just asked for specifics, so there they are.

  • AtomicLeo

The team had glaring needs on the O-line and D-line. The O-line needs could have been addressed with later round picks. McD stockpiled and then tossed aside those picks to chase after a player everyone (even die-hard supporters) agree needs 2-3 years of DEVELOPMENT before he is ready to start.

After a year of high school level drama, one thing stands out that points to the eventual decline of this team: What h*** is the plan? Teams that do not successfully evaluate the talent on their team, plan around that evaluation and execute that plan pick in the top 10 every year. Please. Someone who is a fan of this pick and coach tell me what the plan is, 'cuz I don't get it.

Not a Tebow fan. He has Vince Young to thank for his 1st round selection. If Young is still riding the pine in TN, Tebow is 3-4 round pick. The appropriate rounds for him because he needs 2-3 years, if ever!

  • macklure

Three things I like about McD's pick:
    1) You can see he has a vision. Short and long-term…
    2) He wants hard-workers and winners. I cheer for a team, not a player!
    3) He gives us (Bronco's fans) lot's to talk about and/or argue and I love it.
Can't wait for the season to start!!!

  • TheTroglodyte

Not at all because last year McD had less than 30 days to prepare for the draft. This year he had all year. Thomas was a SWEET pick even though he is a bit raw and yeah I thought he overpaid for Tebow BUT I wasn't the one in private meetings with him. I wasn't the one running him through drills on his improved throwing motion. And I wasn't the one having him dissect game film and read defenses in detail for me to see what his football IQ is.

So, does it disturb me? Why would it. This is McD's first real draft. And the fact is we didn't give up anything we didn't already have to get the two players he wanted. In fact, we turned a 4th into a 3rd. So why freak out over something that just MAY turn into a HoF connection before it even gets to training camp, let alone has a year to mature.

People in Denver are pissed because we have been bad for a long time. The fact is we were built on a poor foundation. One cannot be afraid to tear down a weak foundation and replace it with one that is solid and secure. To believe otherwise is to truly expose oneself as a small minded individual.

All that being said, it doesn't mean McD is doing all the right things. Just that we were not doing the right things before and he deserves his shot at proving himself with all the freakouts of small minded individuals who are LOOKING to complain.

  • inrodwetrust

How quickly you guys forget what we gave up for Jarvis “bust-a-poti” Moss (a 21st, 86th and 198th to move up 4 spots!!!). That was when we became the laughing stock, we are still treading water from that move. I wont even go into the other Shanny trade up move that is not on the team anymore.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

Orton to Pittsburgh for a 2nd round pick would be best case, but I say they'd move him for a 3rd even.

It just doesn't make sense the investment in Tom Brandstater for a year and he has promise, I think if he makes it through a preseason in Denver there'd be even more calls for him to take over as QB during the season.

Fat chance with that happening now though.

I just don't see Brandstater being the odd man out in this whole thing, should be a really fun training camp/preseason indeed.

  • Andpark

Yeah I see Orton is the man out. Trade or just flat out dropped, kinda a shame because I kinda liked the dude. I would love the trade you just mentioned to Pitt.

  • smmoussavi

Vince Young never won a Heisman…

  • flbronc

i dont think orton has that much value to another program to give up a 2nd… i bet pitt is going to cross their fingers with leftwich for four games- not part with a draft pick. nor do i think that brandstater has the potential everyone else does.

  • NMBronc

Would love to see Orton gone for a pick.

I believe the QB of the future is between Brady and Stater, with Tebow being a backup/Slash player.

  • Orange_Crush

I also heard that Minnesota was trying to move up to that spot to take Tebow and that when Denver Got him they moved out of the first round altogether because that was the guy they were targeting.

I keep hearing people say that he would have been there in the second or later in the first, but that just isn't true, to many other teams in the late rounds wanted him, If McDaniel's wanted Tebow (which he clearly did) he had to make the move he made. He bet his career on this, and I for one am very optimistic that this is going to work.

  • confused in littleton

Yea I know but it was a fun quip

  • Iwasfn47

I really think we'll trade Orton today or cut or option Brandstater to the practice squad(allowing him to be signed by another team possibly). Tebow and Quinn will battle it out this season and at worst Tebow will start the following season. If Orton's the odd man out why not trade him for anything you can get? Even a 7th? He's a one year deal and we just made it clear we won't be bringing him, so we'd be letting him walk for nothing. Unless we have faith Kyle can win us a SB this year why not invest the developmental game time on Tebow or Quinn and take whatever we can get for Orton?

McDaniels may want to start Tebow this year, let him learn through struggles, pick up a high pick next year if we do poorly, and be able to defend his job status by claiming a rookie QB needs time to develop. A high pick could allow us to trade down again next year if we wanted to, or we could add an elite player on either side of the ball potentially.

I don't think anyone thinks we'll win a superbowl this year, but if we can make strides towards a SB calibur team over the next two years we could be in good position with all the currently good teams being mainly older teams.

  • Dan

According to NFL.com, Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson denied that his team tried to trade back into the first round of the NFL draft to take Tim Tebow, and he even said the Denver Broncos “panicked” when they made their move for the Florida quarterback. “He's a good player, but we had no interest in taking Tebow,” Wilson said Friday, according to The Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, N.Y. “We were not moving up to take Tebow.”

  • hallmark1955

I doubt seriously that going after Tebow was pandering to the religious right…….the decision was made because the Bronco organization sees in Tebow a guy who can be really special, and will get some playing time this year. One thing is certain, he will give 110% all the time and will demand the same of those around him……I like that. Its good to see talent like Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow have a chance to prove themselves and contribute to our team, the Denver Broncos……..I'm sick of millionaires who act like babies. Get rid of 'em and play football.

  • TheTroglodyte

lol well what is he supposed to say? “Yeah we really had our heart set on that kid but I have so many decades of stingy ownership behind me that there was no way I was going to give up more than the Broncos to get him. Instead I'm happy having 3 rb's on my team, no qb, no wr's, and no defense”.

Even the very rich, want to save face.

  • Andpark
