Tony Scheffler

Tony Scheffler, come on down! You’re the next contestant on Sign your Tender, Get Traded!

The Denver Broncos tight end is hoping recent history repeats itself. Hours after Brandon Marshall was traded to the Miami Dolphins following the wide receiver signing his restricted free agent tender Tuesday, Scheffler has decided to sign his one-year deal to that same end, the Denver Post’s Mike Klis reports.

Scheffler has been reportedly unhappy with his role in Head Coach Josh McDaniels‘ offense. He totaled 416 yards in 2009, nine less catches and 229 less yards than his 2008 production, where he played in two less games.

McDaniels benched both Marshall and Scheffler for the Broncos’ season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs in December, citing a need for disciplinary measures. It was well-speculated that neither would play for the Broncos again. This is a big step to that speculation becoming a reality.

Klis notes that Scheffler has led tight ends with 13.7 yards per catch since he entered the league in 2006, and the Broncos are hoping to net a third round draft pick for his services.

The market for Scheffler won’t be as loaded as Marshall’s was, but the Broncos are now free to talk to teams about potential compensation. Look for Tony to be moved by the draft or sooner.

  • sancher

bye, bye Tony, we only want players, who LOVE being a Denver Bronco and want to play here, so bye you can leave too.

  • kerry

bye Tony. talent is no longer required so you are Persona Non-Grata at Dove Valley. enter stage left, the next bend over and take it yes man player to replace Scheffler. probably that TE we drafted in the 2nd round who would have been there in the 6th. whats his name? id know this but he didnt have a single catch all year and only 9 catches in college. so his name eludes me. what was that again………….?

  • themastermind

    BYE

If they don't want to be here, get rid of them. It's a team game.

  • Will

Tony and Brandon were too good for Josh so we had to get rid of them.

  • Ha Ha

Hey maybe after we get rid of all our play-makers, we could go Semi-Pro!

  • Kerry_stop_crying

Whole bunch of crybabies on this site with kerry leading the way

  • Rockease

Kerry, that TE has the same effect in 2009 as your post – unproductive.

  • d_e_e

    See you later Tony,

I remember that one game that you had 2 touchdowns and it was great. That all but ends your accomplishments in Denver.

    Ya you will be missed.

  • ocbronco

Ask anyone outside of Denver who Tony Scheffler is and they'll say who? And not because he is underutilized but because he hasn't done anything special since becoming a Bronco. He is, at best, an above average receiving TE. Way overrated by our fan base.

But let's go ahead and beat up the coach for getting rid of guys who don't want to play here………

  • Josh

Too bad the same doesn't go for coaches too

  • josh

Yeah right and get our ass handed to us. Maybe we can go to Europe and play

  • mikey55

okay so we got two 2nds for brandon. If we got a 3rd for scheffler i'd be stoked. considering the jets got holmes for a 5th. yeah he has problems and is suspended for 4 games… so what a 5th round pick might not even make ur team! we got more for brandom marshall then philly did for mcnabb!!! whose gonna turn around a team more? and I wouldn't mind seeing denver trade DOWN in the first with an extra decently high 2nd to go with our 2nd and potentially another with a trade down. we could get an iupati or a maurkice pouncey solidfy our line for the next 10 years. in the second there is a good chance that first round talent but slow 40 time brandon spikes will be there to replace davis. maybe a terrence cody falls past san diego? i can't remember what his name is sorry but there is a top end 3-4 end in the draft predicted in the second somewhere potentially. and i would LOVE to see a demayrius thomas. he brings a big body close to 6-4 which is what marshall was listed as but is more like 6-5 but with massive speed similar physical attributes as Calvin johnson but no where near the production or Finely tuned as a WR but with gaffney moving up the depth chart and eddie royal looking for a bigger roll he could potentially have some time to grow. and also btw the draft is Filled with scheffler style TE's this year boo hoo scheffler i liked ya but you really haven't come close to establishing yourself as a consitant area for the d to pay attention to in this league. so as long as we don't draft richard quinns in the second round ( alphonso smith was taken to high in the draft right around where he shoulda been, just the fact that we gave up a first to get to him is what is bad about it so i won't hate on his potential as a 2nd round player) but i would really like to see us draft young OL and DL. food for thought the release of andra davis, say denver drafts a sergio kindle does robert ayers shift to inside?

  • cejskyy

Ok if this was an isolated situation you would have a point. But when a coach comes into an organization and single handedly pisses off and dismantles your entire top rated offense …. it is time to point the finger at the coach

  • kerrysucks

So true all these people that keep bitching need to find a new team because complaining about things doesn't solve anything. No one will even be talking about this when we start winning, so all these fair weather fans (kerry especially) need to find a new team.

  • Doom92

I couldn't agree more… oc did you read above “has lead ALL tightends since 2006. And now I guess the way you rate talent is by if fans around the league know who they are??? Please that was just not thought through before you said it.

And yes I blame McImmature also, he is a bigger let down than was Ashley Lelie or Jarvis Green (yes just tossing out names)… But its still the point.

I knew McImmature would puss out on demanding a number 1, I could have at least gave a nod if he had stuck to what he said but the little Napoleon cant even do that… We'll trade Tony for someones #7 pick 3 years from now…

  • Doom92

“boo hoo scheffler i liked ya but you really haven't come close to establishing yourself as a consitant area for the d to pay attention to in this league.”

You didn't read the fact on him either… “Scheffler has led tight ends with 13.7 yards per catch since he entered the league in 2006″… You are right he is a waste of a uniform and shouldn't even be being paid to ride the pine right…

Look I also agree with someone here that said gripping does no good but there is nothing wrong with stating you opinion and calling people that do so is Immature all alone. I don't hear anyone saying that you are giving McImature oral favors because you are saying good riddance to these guys…

The bottom line is that they are VERY talented players and I hate to see them leave, if that makes me a fare weathered fan then I guess I am but I'd put my fan loyalty for the broncos up against any of yours any time. I've been one since I can remember breathing, just as I'm sure you guys have been. Just except that others have opinions about the same thing and its not the same as yours…

BTW, I didnt correct your mis-spells when I spell checked mine…lol

  • cejskyy

McD makes me ill. I am a born and bred Bronco fan but McD is a Virus to this establishment. When he fails this season and is fired (crossing fingers) what will be left is a tattered and an “all pro” deficient team. It will be such a challenge to court A list coaches like Bill Cower to bring this team back to an elite status in the NFL

  • Mood29

“Scheffler has led tight ends with 13.7 yards per catch since he entered the league in 2006″… You are right he is a waste of a uniform and shouldn't even be being paid to ride the pine right…”

Really??? LMAO could you please come up with a more meaningless stat to show? Seriously, why do people feel the need to find something to bitch about all the time to make themselves feel better about their lives. He isn't in the top 10 in yards, catches or td's for TE's in the last 3 years combined and he is a below average blocker. I don't give a goddamn if he averages 50 ypc if he only makes 1 catch every 3 games.

2 second round pics are better than one 1st round pick. Anyone who says otherwise obviously has NO clue what the bust rate is on 1st round pics.

2nd, stop saying that McD dismantled the Bronco's top rated offense. It was top rated IN TOTAL YARDS. Again with the meaningless nobody gives a $|-|it stat! They were 16th in points per game in 2008 and 18th in ppg in 2009. They moved backwards a whopping TWO spots yet you somehow think the offense suddenly sucked vs the year before when they sucked 2 spots less in actual production.

  • Mood29

“When he fails this season and is fired (crossing fingers)”

lol a born and bred Bronco who is hoping they suck so the coach will get fired. Well done sir, well done!

  • nogopostal

Watch for the Broncos to use Tony and their extra 2nd to Move up and get a late 1st round

  • Doom92

“why do people feel the need to find something to bitch about all the time to make themselves feel better about their lives.”

There ya go again… Seems the only one that might feel better is you! Oh wait, that right, you just did what you said I was doing. You put some one else down to make your own life seem worth while…lmao.

I love it when people like you prove me right…

And stats are always meaningless or even opinions for that matter when they are not what you use to prove your point… But all should beckon to those that agree with everything and should never have an opinion, right???

***** AND cejskyy… You could possibly be hung my the McImmature freaks around here for that statement and as a red blooded breathing Broncos fan you are NOT allowed to express that opinion…LMAO

  • Doom92

nogo… that could actually happen… Even if it does not happen not a bad call… Least this looser fan thinks so…lol.

  • Doom92

See I don't really see it that way… I never want them to fail. Heck I was hoping last year that I was wrong about things and at 6-0 I was warming up some crow around a couple of my buddies, and I for sure wanted to eat it, BAD! But we all know how that turned out and I had to give up my plate.

Once again, I hope I'm wrong about McImmature and I hope he can grow up and handle things better. I clearly think he can coach football and with the right guys (which I'm sure he is seeking) I bet his O can do some damage, which surprised me about him going to Orton. But if he were gone I wouldn't feel any loss at all. Mood does that make me a bad fan cuz I don't like coach? I should at a min have to go to bed with out desert huh? lol To much man :-)…

  • cejskyy

greater good … I am thinking long term. McD does not fall into that plan.

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

The Chargers are all going outside and kissing the feet of the football gods. Seeing as we just gave them the division indefinitely.

You're supposed to draft talent and let them become good right? and use them for the team right? Then why the hell is everybody excited to give up to experienced player for draft picks. The draft is a crap chute anyway you look at it.

I've never been so unexcited for this organization.

  • katch22

nogopostal – Love your idea! How about this, next years 2nd from the fins with Tony to the TE starved Bengals for there first??? No a bad deal for both teams, well a little better for us. Maybe throw in a late rounder as well.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

The guy is as good as a Redskin me thinks…

  • guest

quick question- when we were 6-2 did you feel that way?

  • alm034

    Here's my wishlist:

1st round, pick 11: Rolando McClain

Trade a second and a third for the 20-25th pick in the first round to get Maurkice (sp?) Pouncey.

Remaining second round pick: Best WR available or Toby Gerhart

  • jerrycertain

If we can get a third or forth for him it would great. The guy has never completed a full year here. Good went he is on the field by good does not help the team when you are sitting on the bench or in the training room.

  • Mood29

I can't imagine why Shanahan would want him when he has Cooley and I can't imagine Scheffler wanting to play for Shanahan when he complains about his production since he wasn't productive under Mike either. Maybe I'm completely wrong on that, I guess time will tell. I can't see that conversation even taking place though, let alone happening.

  • dogheadbrew

How about we trade him for a second next year. With some deft maneuvering McD can own the entire 2012 2nd round.

  • robtink242

I don't know if its because you guys live in the Colorado area or what but we are the talk of the league. Every team that has us on there schedules think we are a good team to pound on. The way i see MCD knows something non of us knows. Can he honestly tell us why he got rid of the Franchise QB, WR, and future TE and RB. Wow this team has a complete face lift from 2 seasons ago. Don't know how that defense is going to look when you take away a perfect DC in Nolan. Don't know how the Offense is going to look with no proven QB,RB,WR's,TE, and no Center. But hey McD has to know what he is doing. If it were up to me i'd get rid of the guy mid way thru the season if our record isn't good. Pat Bowlen better have John Gruden on speed dail.

  • ericinvegas

“The way i see MCD knows something non of us knows.”

Even with the typo, this is the smartest comment I've read in a long time.

Agree with his decisions or not, McD spends 8-12 hours a day watching film, evaluating talent, designing schemes, supervising workouts, talking to players, getting feedback from other coaches, considering contracts, etc. The average internet message board contributor probably spends an hour a day goofing off from work and another couple hours a week in front of ESPN or YouTube to gather their facts.

I was SO not a fan of the Shanahan firing and McD hiring, especially with what happened with Cutler. But I've come around. Even Shanahan must have realized he needed to get away for awhile – otherwise why would he be completely embracing the 3-4 defense in DC (with the ironic consequence of alienating a Pro Bowl player in Albert Haynesworth) when he had no interest before?

NFL talent evaluators say you have to give rookies 3 years to develop before really figuring out how they've adjusted to the NFL. I'm all for giving McD two years at least, and I think Bowlen agrees.

  • ocbronco

I feel like I am reading the Denver Post comments. You guys are depressing.

First of all, our new regime is doing their best to fix a defense that had 3 decent players when they took over. 3! That's pathetic! If Shanny would have made better decisions surrounding the D and put more time and effort on that side of the ball he would still be with us.

Second, they are looking for team first players. How can you argue with that concept? I am assuming some if not most of you have played team sports and can understand the importance of that concept. I for one will give it a chance because I love rooting for good guys like Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins and Doom. They have that mentality and it makes them great players and teammates and elevates those around them. I want more of those types of guys on O.

Lastly, of the 3 players bounced from the '06 draft – Cutler, Marshall, and Scheff – Only Marshall has proven to be a supreme talent. I am a huge fan of his and will continue to be but do you really want to make him the highest paid WR in the league? I think that would be a very bad decision so getting anything for him, certainly 2 #2's, before he walks in free agency next year, is rather intelligent business decision.

Give these guys another year before thinking the sky is falling. Our offense with Shanny, Cutler, Marsh and Scheff was never better than a 16th in the league so whoever thinks we had the 2 or 3 offense is looking at the wrong stat. I expect marked improvement this year on both sides of the ball, so unless that doesn't happen these guys are making moves that I can support even if I don't like all of them.

  • Dissappointed

Yeah, the comments at broncotalk are nearing Denver Post greatness.

  • Joe

“I know looking from the outside it's hard to understand what's going on, especially when you lose players the caliber we've lost in the past couple of years, but it is the ultimate team sport,” Graham said. “Not one player is going to win the Super Bowl for us.”
Thats from our TE. But heres what I got out of it, as a translation:
Winning a SuperBowl is hard enough, and were never going to get there when we keep trading away all of our damn talent. A locker room of Kyle Ortons are not going to get us anywhere. You can have a locker room of the best attitudes in the world, but at the end of the day, talent wins games. But here in Denver, we dont believe in individual talent. We believe in the system. We believe in the Patriots way.
Hey everyone, lets break out our video recorders and go tape every teams practices that are on our schedule. I bet thats McD's next big plan.

  • Joe

Umm, we also lost our DC, who made our defense what it is…..Now we have Wink, who has never called a 3-4 before….
And as far as Dawkins and Bailey go, I bet they're pissed as hell. When Dawk came here, we had Cutler and Marshall. Then Jay gets traded, now Marshall. And Bailey finally see's some talent in Denver, and we trade it away. Both players know that they will not win a superbowl here before they retire. Its sad, but true.

  • PsyD

There is a psychological term for everything you have just said and it's called “Emotional Cognition Transference” or ECT. You are upset because you don't understand why what you perceive to be great players are being traded and to help yourself justify that rationale you create a world in which the other Bronco players you like and respect, think and feel the same way you do.

You will hold on so tightly to this irrational way of thinking to justify the “fear” which you have created about the Broncos unraveling at the seems that even if Dawkins and Bailey came out and said they didn't want Marshall on the team and support every move McD has made, you would proudly proclaim they were just trying to be team leaders and didn't mean a word of it.

I took what Graham said to mean that he 100% buys into what is happening and that people on the outside really don't know, they just assume.

I chose to live in and create a positive world rather than a world of doom and fear though so naturally I will see what he said completely different from someone who choses to create a world of fear and chaos.

  • RafaTheRed

Denver won squat since Marshall, Cutler and Shefller have been on the team! Play-off appearances for all 3 = 0!!!

Player who buy into the team first philosophy is the only way the Broncos get back into the play-offs.

Too many of you guys are star gazing! Denver as a team was riddled with a me first cancer and McDaniels was brave enough to handle it head on.

Its really strange that you all construe confidence as somebody being egotistical! Genius is always met with scepticism.

Remember “There is no great genius without a mixture of madness”. Aristotle

  • RafaTheRed

Defence slid badly at the latter end of the year and I suppose that was McDaniels fault?

    Give me a break!

  • RafaTheRed

If he is successful will you still feel the same way?

  • mikebirty

anyone else fed up of the bickering and arguing?

  • Jeff

Why are so many people defending bad decisons made by the coaches/staff ? Im not down on everything but also im not approving everything. Trading Marshall is mind blowing, maybe they know things we dont but from the outside looking in, it is very trivial. At this point all we can do is b*tch and complain and hope for the best when the season starts.

  • herc_rock

This has been inevitable since he mouthed off about the Cutler fiasco. Why is everyone getting their panties in a bunch?

I tell you what though, with the way McD operates, if he doesn't succeed here, he won't get another chance anywhere else.

  • Todd Nailer

“all we can do is b*tch and complain and hope for the best”

Wow, what a fabulous outlook on life. Change the “we” to “I” though because that is your choice to do nothing but bitch and complain and be miserable.

  • ocbronco

I give more credit to McDaniels and Xanders for bringing in talent than I do Nolan for game management. I was not a fan of Nolan's (until we were 3-0 and then I was on the bandwagon with everyone else) because I just don't see a guy that's been that successful over all in his career. I think he got that job bc he had the same agent as McD and McD and McD had no better options. While Nolan has had some successful seasons, I'm not sure he is the main reason. Anyway, we will see if we get better or not. If we don't, clearly Nolan was the catalyst, when we do – that will speak for itself.

Not sure where Champ and Dawk are on these matters. You are guessing as much as I would be if I said they wanted Marshall gone. They are supposedly a couple of the guys that went to McD and complained about his allegiance to the team week 17. And Cutler? I'm over him and sure they are as well. Good luck in Chicago…….

  • MiamiMike

DENVER Fot the best they could. Arizona gave Boldin away for a 3rd round pick Steelers gave Homes away for a 5th so considering no one wanted to jump on this for a 1st we did all right. We can take the 2 second picks and trade up or take our 1st and trade down to get more picks as well. Lets see what happens before we make a judgment call this early.

  • areferee

Scheffler was overrated from the start, primarily because Cutler always threw to him. He has been under used since then because he has never been in sync with Orton or McDaniels. No big loss and no big value.

We have so many needs this year, we can't do it all through the draft even with four picks in the top 80. Look closely at the team roster. We had better use our 1st round pick for a center, or our entire offense will collapse from the middle. Offensive Linemen are not glamorous, but in our case, essential.

Yes, I know! We need a wide out also. But with two picks in the second, we should make due. We will have to get used to the idea; we won't be as strong at receiver this year without Marshall. Case closed.

Here is another “fact”…this is year two of a four year rebuild. There is no way to get it done much sooner. There aren't enough “senior citizen” free agents, nor draft choices to get it done any faster. The question is, and remains: “Do we have the right man at the helm to get it done, even in that length of time?” As a fan, my hope is YES. As a realist, I have my doubts.

    What say you, Kyle?

  • bill

“dismantles your entire top rated offense” — who cares about top ratings if you don’t ever make the playoffs? these 3 have zilch playoff games, lots of nice records, but it doesn’t translate to wins for the teams, only nice stats for the individuals…
