Real men don't need to say, 'no homo'.

Brady Quinn, 'nuff said, real men don't need to say, 'no homo'.

Allergies and all Kyle and I got through this one, recording with Asian Orange AKA Danh from DenverBroncos.com / Broncos County Message Boards / The Orange Page (my other site).

We were able to avoid anything that made Kyle too angry, but him and I did go toe-to-toe over a couple of issues such as who would be the starting quarterback in Denver come week one and what the fate of Brandon Marshall would be.

We covered just a couple other things Tuesday night, including who we thought may be starting at offensive line for Denver this season and who (besides DJ Williams) was unexpectedly absent from the Broncos first organized team activities.

We love your commentary and look for it to improve every show, this is the offseason and we are only going to get better and corner the market as your go to source for Broncos commentary on your morning commutes (and evening relaxation).

Just keep in mind this is the offseason and as we’ve got some really good stuff in store for you this season. A lot of guests, more than a few Broncos and a ton of surprises. Also, of course, give aways!

So let’s keep with it and we certainly hope that you enjoy!

Stream it here at The Orange Page.

I remember last year I wanted Quinn. He was in CLEVELAND, that isn't exactly a recipe for success. I think that McDaniels wanted Quinn last year but couldn't get him for whatever reason, so he settled for Orton.
I also think that McDaniels wants Quinn to play better than Orton, which would mean that we have a 1st round, young QB taking over our franchise. I also think that McDaniels knows that he can't yank out or starting QB for 2 years in a row.
What is the solution? Orton being injured and Quinn sliding in to the starting role, and not giving it up, ala Brady when Bledsoe wen't down. We all know that Orton won't play the entire season, so we know that Quinn will get his chance. What Quinn does with it is up to him, but he's already familiar with the offense and the terminology. Orton hurts his finger in preseason again, don't be surprised if this time, he isn't starting the season. Orton goes down with another ankle? Don't expect him to replace Quinn any time soon. I'm just saying that I know that McDaniels want's Quinn to out play Orton, but he also knows that he needs to not play musical QBs and do the politically correct thing of waiting till either Orton really struggles (hopefully he doesn't, cause that would mean losses for our team), or he needs to wait for Orton to go down with injury (which we know will happen).

    true

Wait, Danh works for DB.com? Awesome! Another great podcast guys, but Kyle I have to say I don't really agree with you on much anything lol, me and Ian think alike though, “Great minds….” ;P

  • robtink242

He prolly ever wanted Quinn. But didnt have the balls to trade Cutler within the AFC. The situation is quite interesting because the way i see it Bradstater should get his shot. He has better mobility that Orton and Quinn, Has a stronger arm than Orton or Quinn. What does Quinn and Orton have over Tom, they played in games that count. But the only reason i'm still holding on hope for him is that Quinn and Orton arent winners.

  • Dan

Quinn had 4 years in McD's system…Brandstrater and Orton have had only 1 year…Advantage goes to Quinn. In addition, Quinn's arm was stronger before he got obsessed with bulking-up his arms and shoulders. The first thing McD should do is have his strength coach cut him back on upper body workouts to pick-up the gains in throwing speed and power. Start or no start, Orton/Quinn/Brandstrater is a much stronger set-up than having Simms (left hander with low arm strength).

Say what you want about McD bungling the Ayers and Smith picks last year, you have to like what he did with Quinn and our defense line moves. McD put us in a position of only needing a decent draft instead of a perfect draft.

Now, if Xanders and Brandon's agent can stop playing tummy swords…Maybe we can get a solid contract done…Then I think we are headed to a far more competitive run at San Diego next year!

  • Big_Pete

Normally, I would be agreeing with you, but I'd like to bring one very important thing up. Ok, maybe 2 very important things.
Tom Brandstater can't hit the broad side of a barn with a football, even if he were only standing 5 feet away from it. I was at almost every training camp practice last year, and I'm telling you, the kid can't throw. There is a very obvious reason why he was drafted so late. There was no pass rush, no linemen to get in the way, and the receivers for the most part were stationary, or right in front of him, and still, he'd 1 hop them everywhere.
We all watched Favre throw the ball around to high schoolers like it was nothing, yet Brandstater can't throw the ball around during pitch and catch sessions to professional and pro bowl caliber wide receivers/tight ends? Are you kidding me?
They would also put out targets for them to throw to, and he'd always throw them in the dirt. Again, this is just him and a target, all alone, and he still couldn't throw the ball with any accuracy.
Just imagine how bad he'd do in live action.
Like you all, I watched him that last pre-season game when “everything just sorta came together” for him, but that was most certainly an abberation, not the norm. If he can't even throw a ball to a standing still WR in practice with any consistency, what chance does he realistically have to make any impact in an actual game? I'd say zero.
Second point: I honestly believe that the QB job is Quinn's to take. There is no reason why McDaniels would bring in the QB he wanted before Orton unless he really wanted him to be the starter. I think that Quinn was number 2, right behind Casell on the McDaniels QB wish list. Yet he had to settle for Orton when Chicago basically pulled a Ditka with draft picks. Sure, McDaniels saw Orton being a serviceable QB, or else he'd have never taken him, and really, Orton did ok last year, but make no mistake about it, McDaniels wanted Quinn over everyone that could have been had last year, once Casell was officially traded to KC.
All it is going to take is 1 of 3 scenarios for Quinn to be our QB for the next decade, which I believe he'll be that good. They are:
    1. Orton get's injured at one point between now and next year – Probability of this is 100%
    2. Orton struggles mightily from the get go, and Quinn shines like everyone hopes he will – Probability of this is 10%
    3. Orton doesn't sign his tender, holds out, and then Quinn takes the snaps and is the starter going in to pre-season/regular season – Probability of this is >0%

is that a picture of Derek Zoolander's blue steel? He's a model idiot! p.s.- why doesn't Disqus recognize my computer or remember my password, I have to put in my password every time and it sux.

  • nisse

if mcdaniels needs excuses to start quinn, then quinn shouldnt start.
the best qb starts, it should be as easy as that.

and do anyone feel mcdaniels is the kind of guy who wouldnt do anything to win?

  • Big_Pete

If the “best” QB were to start, he never would have traded away Cutler.
McDaniels has also said that he will not play musical QBs. He seems like a man who will put personal pride above all else, and because of that, Orton will start until he cant (i.e. injury/ineffectiveness), that way, McDaniels will look like a genius for getting Quinn in when he did, and everyone will praise him.
If he yanks Orton for Quinn right now, then everyone will say it's 1999 with Bubby/Griese all over again, and he'll get crucified for getting rid of Cutler all over again. He knows this, I know it, we all know it.

  • nisse

everybody will say its 1999 all over again, and mcdaniels wont care on bit.

he is probobly one of the best evaluaters of qbs in the league, if orton starts then he is the best qb at the moment, if quinn starts the same goes for him.
there wont be any other aspect of it than who is the best guy.
because mcdaniels wont get fired for starting this qb or that qb, he will get fired if he dont win enough games. simple as that.
say he has got personal pride or what ever, but mcdaniels it all about winning and proved with the cutler mess that he dont care what anyone else in this country thinks is the right thing to do but himself.

I agree with you that orton will probobly get hurt, thats happend alot the last 2 years right? him getting injured. and if he does, maybe quinn takes his spot if he is ready and plays good enough. but what ever happens, mcdaniels will start the guy he thinks will have the greatest chans of winning.

and cutler proved he is all big arm no brain this season in chicago, and we got 2 1st round picks for him.

  • Pete

McDaniels proved last year that his pride got in the way with his players. He consistently started people, or played players who were clearly less talented or less prepared than others.
I agree that he is surely one of the best QB evaluators, but I honestly think that he'll stick with Orton even if Quinn outplays him. Until injury of course, or until next off season when Orton is an UFA.

  • nisse

consistently started less talented people? give me some examples whould you, I agree that hillis didnt get his shot, but i cant come up with any other example. he ditched phonze less than halv way through the season, altough he gave up a 1st round pick for him, thats not letting your pride get in your way.

  • ocbronco

He only played for Weiss for 2 years – Junior and Senior. That was also 4 years ago and against college defenses. McD also said that the O has changed a bit.
So in no way does that give Quinn an advantage over Orton. Orton will be the starting qb period. Fortunately, we now have 1 and possibly 2 solid backups should Orton get hurt as has often been the case. Or worse, should he play poorly enough to be replaced.

  • Bronconinja

Ok to set a few things straight… Marcus Thomas did put on weight to play NT.. he ended up playing more at DE since Fields got off to a good start. TO and the broncos wont happen we can handle 1 headache (BM) but not 2 (cutler, bm or bm TO) Praters number is 5 not 4.. the last 81 we had was Nate jackson the TE that always got cut and brought back, We are likely to draft Rolando in the 1st… About Mk Shannahan.. Doesnt want Marshall he was likely to cut/trade marshall had he kept his job as Brocnos HC… Also there were reports about Marshall and Bates gettting into it, Part if the reason Shannahan doesnt want marshall. oh and I agree Woody Paige is effin nuts!!! All in all pretty good stuff.

  • RHINO67

Call them what you will gunslingers, chance takers, little Farves when the Broncos have a mobile QB good things happen in Denver! Elway: we all know what he did. The snake: 13-3 record, beat the Pats in the height of their power and a AFC championship game. Cuttler: prolific offense that could score at will. The only reason why his teams were middle of the road is because our D sucked big blue and orange balls in those years. Non mobile QBs. Griese: suck and got our star RB hurt with an INT. Orton: middle of the road again. The only time I saw Orton make a play is when the system or the play went exactly to plan. We all know that is not going to happen every down. We need a play maker so bring on Quinn. I know that there is stationary QBs who get it done but those QBs have skills that Orton don't posses a cannon arm and the ability to get their team in the right position pre snap. I'm tired of our QB tripping over his beard and falling when a finger is laid on him so welcome Quinn he is our best option at this point.

  • Pete

    Absolutely

  • Pete

I mean, LaMont Jordan is a very likely place to start. What a waste of a roster spot he was, yet he kept getting chance after chance after chance. We kept playing Marshall, with him starting game 1, when he clearly didn't give a sh*t. He ran half speed, didn't make any effort to catch the ball, nothing. Yet he started and played. He was a detriment to our team until what, halfway through game 2 when Dawkins talked to him in the locker room?
How about Moreno? He kept getting the start, even though Buck was clearly better than him.
Nobody want's to admit this, but Royal sucked last year, whether it was the play calling, Orton, or just sophomore slump, but he flat out sucked, and dropped some very easy balls. Gaffney could have done much better as a starter than Royal.
D-side of the ball. He kept starting Ayers. Marcus Thomas seriously has talent, yet wasn't given the chance to play as much as he should. Alphonso Smith should have never seen the field in any game, much less half of the games. Woodyard is “too small” to play, yet every time he's on the field, the kid just flat out makes plays. I don't know how anyone can still say he's too small for a position that he obviously excels at.
These are just off the top of my head at 4am. I might look at a depth chart later to see who I'm missing, cause I know I am.

  • http://www.robertclarkmtfs.com/ Robert Clark MTFS

To be fair, Cutler's offense didn't “score” much at all. The Bronco's were 16th in the league in points scored under Cutler in 2008. Hardly prolific. Good writeup though

  • kerrysucks

First of all get your facts straight, Ayers never started last year Haggan did and Buckhalter can't start because he can't carry the load he splits carries and gets hurt every year, including last year

  • Pete

No, I don't want you to think I'm attacking you, but I did specify that McDaniels either “started” or “played” people over others who were more deserving/better. I didn't limit it to only start. So yes, Moreno with Buck and Ayers definitely fall into that category.

  • Nisse

makes no sense what you are saying.
gaffney is mcdaniels guy, him not starting is also mcdaniels not letting his pride get in his way. and he did play as much as eddie, i think, havent got the numbers.
woodyard was playing on 3ed downs, ofcourse he makes plays then, but he is still to small to stop the run.
he showed what he thinks of marshall by the end of season and during preseason.
again, i agree about lamont jordan<hillis
moreno is young, buck is old and gets hurt alot. got to play as much as he could.
dont know anything about marcus thomas potential, but as they said in the podcast, runstopping isnt really his thing.
but them not knowing if he should play NT or END last year shows there was alot of fuzz about him.

  • RHINO67

Your right but the point is when we had Cuttler the feeling was that we were on the verge of something great even with a horrible D. I don't think alot of people are saying that with Orton at the helm, at least I'm not.

  • http://www.robertclarkmtfs.com/ Robert Clark MTFS

My feeling when we had Cutler is that we were on the constant verge of another Red Zone INT.

I agree with you ala Orton though :)

  • Hope

I realy think that Tom Brandstater will shock all of you.No one is even give the 6'5'' inch rocket arm a chance.Tom Brandstater will be the Broncos stating qb before the begianing of the season or the first 4 games.
