Amidst disturbing news rumors, the Denver Broncos have announced that they’ve hired Craig Aukerman to serve as their defensive assistant.

Aukerman is coaching for his 11th season in football and first with the NFL, he comes to Denver via Kent State University where he spent his time coaching the linebackers and leading them to four games where they held opponents scoreless last season.

Aukerman is the first defensive hire under the Wink Martindale regime. Martindale was named defensive coordinator of the Broncos after being promoted from linebacker coach January 28th, 2010. Aukerman is likely Martindale’s hand picked replacement.

BRONCOS HIRE CRAIG AUKERMAN AS DEFENSIVE ASSISTANT

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Thursday hired Craig Aukerman as the team’s defensive assistant, it was announced.

Aukerman, 33, enters his 11th coaching season, his first at the NFL level, after serving in various capacities in 10 seasons at the collegiate level.

Last season, Aukerman guided linebackers at Kent State and helped the Golden Flashes hold four opponents without a touchdown. Junior middle linebacker Cobrani Mixon earned a spot on the All-Mid-American Conference first team after leading the Pirates and placing eighth in the conference with 108 tackles.

Before his stint at Kent State, Aukerman spent four seasons (2005-08) at the University of Miami (Ohio) where he started as the linebackers coach before adding co-special teams coordinator duties in 2007. During his watch, three of the RedHawks’ linebackers – Joey Hudson, Clayton Mullins and Caleb Bostic – appeared on the Butkus Award Preseason Watch list in 2008, the first time in the history of that award that one school had three nominees.

From 2003-04, Aukerman served several roles at Western Kentucky. In 2003, he led the Hilltoppers’ outside linebackers before being named the school’s special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach in 2004. Under his watch, the school ranked in the Gateway Conference’s top three in scoring defense while producing a pair of all-conference linebackers.

In 2001-02, Aukerman was a graduate assistant at Miami (Ohio) where he was responsible for the team’s defensive backs while breaking down the opposition’s offense and directing the offensive scout team.

Aukerman’s initial coaching position was as wide receivers coach at the University of Findlay in 2000.

A four-year letterwinner (1995-98) and two-time NAIA All-American at Findlay, Aukerman played defensive back, wide receiver and contributed on special teams to help the Oilers win two national titles.

Aukerman, who received his bachelor’s degree from Findlay, and his wife, Summer, have a son, Cayden.

Wow, how does coach know him i wonder?

and how did KJ's dunk over Hakim O lose out to Jordan over Ewing as the best posterization ever?

  • TheTroglodyte

Jordan's dunk is overrated. He committed a blatant offensive foul grabbing Ewing's arm in midair and moving it out of the way. Much like Jordan's carry over on every dribble, if it wasn't for the NBA using Jordan as their marketing machine, that play would have never happened.

Boo to you NBA. Boo to you!

That guy looks like Phillip Rivers. I hope that he acts better.

Hah, good connection. Hadn't noticed that when I picked the picture…

    From DenverBroncos.com:

In 2004, Aukerman coached the inside linebackers at Western Kentucky University under then defensive coordinator and current Broncos defensive coordinator Don Martindale.

  • fbronco

Totally off-topic here but wanted to share a rumor. I'm in Fresno, CA and just came from dinner after talking with a guy who is a friend of the Carr family. David Carr's brother Derek Carr is currently at Fresno State. Anyway, he told me that David is currently house-hunting in Denver. Might be that David is soon to be a Bronco.

  • TheTroglodyte

Do you mean “you're” an idiot?

  • TheTroglodyte

    By the way your name reminds me of a song. “It's the capital S oh yes I'm fresh N double O P, D O double G Y D O double G you see!”

Now that I just quoted Snoop Doggy Dogg on your B|7CH @$$ do you still think I'm an idiot?

  • WhidbeyBronco

he'd be cheap… used to be good… we need a backup…. then we'd have two (one of them starting lol)

  • WhidbeyBronco

    just kidding KO

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Josh Temple

I've said that David Carr is the best backup in the league since leaving Houston.

  • http://nation.theorangepage.com/blog Ian Henson

ugh, isn't he still under contract? We'd be snapped for tampering…

    From http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/player/david-carr/

“News: Carr, who will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, might sign with Arizona, the East Valley Tribune reports.

Impact: The Cardinals might be in the market for a veteran to serve as Matt Leinart's backup. Leinart would probably have to struggle or get hurt in order to lose his starting job. Wherever he lands, Carr will probably be a backup heading into training camp.”

  • JoeDoGG

  • knewhimwhen

Broncos have finally made a good choice in selecting Craig Aukerman as part of their coaching staff. He will be an asset to the team, and to the community.

  • fbronco

Maybe that's just the homer in me, but I think if Carr is given a chance, he will be much more than a back up. He had the worst o-line in history with Houston. He didn't have a chance. Under McD's tutelage with our O-line, he may be what he should have been.

  • Gridiron

you are a moron if you think that Carr is anywhere close to being a good Qb….he should hang up his pads…………..Have you seen him play with a good line…..no you haven't…sometimes what you see is what you get……….we need to stick with KO and develop Tom B or draft a qb that mcd can really do something with………….Carr really?

Just wanted to let you know I enjoy the blog… keep it going my friend!! :-)

“Have you seen him play with a good line…..no you haven't”

Kinda arguing against yourself there. No QB is good playing with a poor line. I'm not saying I want Carr… just saying nobody really knows if he might be a good QB or not since we haven't seen him play with a good line.

oh,my god ! Thant's good article. I found it a long time. We like reading article ! We will always come come here reading. thanks a lot.

What difference does it matter where Aukerman coached college? Miami(OH) is considered “The Cradle of Coaches”. As I recall he coached there. Give some respect to his knowledge of the game and not what small schools he has coached at. Craig will be an asset to the Broncos football team.

  • zakmon

Aukerman came from small school's and has did nothing but build them up and leave his mark along the way. Denver is a huge step, however Craig has the ability to completly change that program around as well.
