Kyle OrtonBroncos Zone asked other Broncos bloggers what Denver should do with their upcoming restricted free agents, particularly Kyle Orton, and everyone agrees that Orton should be back in 2010 (and Elvis Dumervil deserves to get paid).

Bleacher Report grades the 2009 season. Yeah, we know, more grades. But this one’s in a slideshow format, which makes it slightly less lame.

I’m still hopeful that we’ll keep Hillis and actually use him next year, however if we don’t I would love to see LenDale White in a broncos uniform.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

White is a Denver native. I remember him predraft saying he wanted to a Bronco.

I don't know who you replace Orton with. If you draft a rookie QB (which I'm 98% sure we wont) then you would want Orton around one more year so the rook can learn the system and work into the position.

But if you look at the Free Agent market for QBs there's really not any better talent out there that you can say completely overrides that of Orton.

  • NMBronc

Considering the free agent market is aweful, we need to keep Orton…oh just threw up in my mouth a little…., draft or sign another prospect and develope either the new prospect or Stater. Unless we can trade Bailey for a promising QB…ugh.

  • kerry

to hell with keeping Orton. Brandstater cant be worse and certainly has better tools to be a QB. better arm, mobility and awareness. Kevin O'Connell will be a free agent i believe. he has been in a McD system in New England. bring him in to back up Brandstater. Orton just flat out blows.

  • broncos19

Draft Colt McCoy and sign White. We need another back up for Knowshon cause Buckhalter is always hurt!

  • Joe

I'm down with drafting McCoy. Let him sit behind Orton for a year, and than give him the start after one year. And than in the second round and on, lets draft d-lineman and o-linemen.

  • anthony33

We need Orton for at least one more year unless McD has been hiding Brandstater. If you draft a player or bring in a free agent you have to live with another year or two of learning the system.

I am not a McCoy fan… can you say Chris Simms.

kerry, hope you are right about TB… I just did not see enough of him in preseason and never heard of him before we drafted him to even have an opinion. Just hope… which is usually not a good strategy.

  • Rob_Bronco

There's NO WAY that we should keep Orton. He isn't the answer. Sign Jeff Garcia to a two year deal. The guy is a proven winner. In 2006, he threw 10 TDs and 2 ints in 8 games. In 2007, he had 13 TDs and 4 ints in 13 games. In 2008, he threw 12 tds and 6 ints in 12 games. He's a 4 time pro bowl QB and has led his teams to the playoffs 4 times. In the past three years, he's had QB ratings over 90. His completion percentage is higher than Orton's during that span. And he's a great option to groom younger QBs.

  • WhidbeyBronco

White would be a great pick up if he didn't cost too much… he can block, doesn't fumble and still has some life left in those legs…

  • WhidbeyBronco

no doubt. We definitely keep orton and hopefully draft another youngster

  • WhidbeyBronco

    Baily won't get us much i'm afraid… i suppose a promising back-up… haven't considered who that might be…?

  • WhidbeyBronco

    brilliant as usual kerry…

  • WhidbeyBronco

    not

  • WhidbeyBronco

    NOT BrandS!
    McCoy scares me. but?

  • robtink242

OMG were you in my head. thats what i've been think all year long. he does carry a pricy head tag but McD is know for his sillyness

  • anthony33

Woody Paige for Mayor I am dead serious.

Great mailbag this morning… read it. Whidbey, you'll love it!!

He expresses, very eloquently, what most of us die-hards are feeling.

  • robtink242

yeah that sounds good. but i rather Bradstater and O'Connell fight during training camp. But i really hope that Simms is release first. he blows more than old noddle arm. but what do i know.

  • robtink242

okay if i was in the front office these are the people i'll target in the draft(not in draft order)

    S rashard jones- georgia
    QB dan lefevour- central michigan
    LB brandon spikes- florida
    LB rolando mcclain- alabama
    DE jared odrick- penn state
    LB shaun lee- penn state
CB brandon ghee- wake forest(a. smith should came out with this guy)
    C J.d. walton- baylor

I think WR and RB can be found via free agency. Lendale White is my to choice. we should trade him for hillis their OC there in tennesee is a bronco man so they should use him unlike us. WR is a funny position with Royal, Gaffney, Mickenley i think we should do are very best to bring Stokley and Marshall back. Lloydd is a safe option and could easily be 4th or 5th reciever. but then u want to see why you drafted mickenley.

I'm surprised at the number Broncos bloggers that do not understand the status of the CBA. The consensus I've seen, is that yes next year is an uncapped year but don't look for any big spending sprees. The owners are loaded for a long fight with the player's union. Teams have been down sizing staffs the past 2 years and hiring young (ie CHEAP) coaches to build a war chests. There will be a lockout in 2011. Team will not dump a lot of money into FAs this year.

Also there are a lot of RFA but few teams will want to part with draft picks to sign these guys. The labor uncertainty adds to this. I would not be surprised if Marshall is the only player we get ANY trade offers for. Seriously, if your a GM and like Scheffler or Hillis why part with a 2nd or 3rd round pick knowing the Broncos are going to get rid of these guys. I bet we get a 4th or 5th for Tony and Hillis gets cut.

Lendale White would be great but is he an RFA? That means we have to give up draft picks to sign him. See the problem?

  • broncorelic

Neck-beard is not the answer, whether leading us to a SB or mentoring a rook. That is of course if you want to develop QBs who fall down at critical portions of a game. This bites…!

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

Nothing is set in stone yet via an Uncapped year. Don't jump the gun. Both the players and the NFL brass are trying to work something out.

I'm not sure that I totally agree either. I bet teams would be MORE willing to spend draft picks and dip fairly deep into FA to make a 2010-2011 superbowl push when they know that there will we a lock out in 2011. That's what happened in the NHL a few years ago and I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see similarities.

  • http://manchester-architects.com T-Money

But who do you replace him with then?

  • broncorelic

It's looking like a mediocre season next year anyway, whether we draft a rook and start KO (to “mentor”), or start a rook, TB, or Sims. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Draft McCoy and stick him in there from the beginning. He'll have 20 games to “get it”.

  • robtink242

that is if he isn't release for some reason.

  • flbronc

    here's a rfa rule question….

is there a limit as to how many rfa players you can tender at the particular levels? Can you tender all of them at the highest level (not that we should, by any means)?

I think that we should tender him at the highest level, and if someone takes him we get a first in return… A second first we could use to either grab a qb, or potentially move back for more picks.

  • anthony33

I do think they will draft a QB in the second or third round.

Very difficult to tell anything from one game, but I did like what in saw in Lefevour out of Central Michigan. The knock on him will be the level of competition he was up against, but the guy just looks like he has all the tools.
