The Mike Shanahan-led Redskins were unable to pluck a Denver Broncos offensive assistant away. The Gary Kubiak-led Texans appear to have been more fortunate.
Per Adam Schefter on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, Kubiak has sought and been granted permission to interview Broncos offensive line coach Rick Dennison for their open offensive coordinator position. The Texans’ former coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, joined his dad in D.C. to be the O.C. there (so, in a roundabout way, Shanny still plucked an offensive assistant away).
And, according to Schefter, Dennison will likely get the job.
“(Dennison) also happens to be Kubiak’s best friend,” Schefter said. “Best friends don’t interview for jobs, they get jobs. Dennison will be there on Monday.”
The difference between Dennison and Bobby Turner is that the Texans are interviewing the former for a promotion. The Skins were interested in Turner for the same position he now holds, so the Broncos were able to refuse.
Now, regarding Dennison. The Broncos’ offensive line struggled playing two systems in 2009, but Dennison’s potential/likely loss will still hurt. The Broncos’ coaching staff has remained intact until now… it looks like the first coaching interview and hiring process will have to begin after the Texans and Dennison meet Monday.
