Despite signs to the contrary, Mitch Berger will continue to fill the Denver Broncos‘ punting duties this Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, head coach Josh McDaniels told reporters Wednesday. The team signed punter Britton Colquitt to its active roster Wednesday.
“Berger is still punting,” McDaniels said. “We never stop trying to improve the team or look, as we move forward here, any way we feel we can add depth to our football team going forward, that’s what we try to do.”
Coach’s comments end speculation that Colquitt might punt while Berger stays as holder for placekicker Matt Prater. Comments from Colquitt’s brother Dustin, who plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, confirms that the Broncos signed Colquitt with next year in mind.
“I don’t know if he (Britton) is going to punt this week or not,” Dustin said. “I know that they brought him up from Miami’s practice squad so they can have him for next season.”
“He was a guy that we’re familiar with,” McDaniels said of the younger Colquitt, “so we felt like it was a good time to do that with the roster spot open.”
Berger has had a horrendous end to 2009. Perhaps he’ll kick off 2010 — the calendar year, that is — with a bang this Sunday. The football season belongs to Colquitt.
