Off to a 5-0 start for the first time in 11 seasons, the Denver Broncos renew their rivalry with the San Diego Chargers (2-2) this week on Monday Night Football. With a potential 3.5-game lead in the AFC West at stake, kickoff at Qualcomm Stadium is set for 5:30 p.m. PDT.

QUICKLY:

  • The Broncos have been one of the NFL’s best teams in the second half this year, outscoring opponents 59-7 (+52) while posting a 1,158-501 (+657) advantage in total yardage (includes overtime numbers).
  • Head Coach Josh McDaniels is the sixth rookie head coach in the Super Bowl era (since 1966) to begin his coaching career with a 5-0 record.

OFFENSE:

  • Denver has posted five touchdown drives of at least 80 yards this year, including two 90-yard TD drives in last week’s 20-17 overtime win against New England. The club covered 98 yards on 12 plays for WR Brandon Marshall’s 11-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
  • QB Kyle Orton is 8-1 in his previous nine starts dating back to last year, and his 26-12 (.684) record as a starter ranks third in the NFL among active quarterbacks.

DEFENSE:

  • Led by long-time NFL defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, the Broncos lead the NFL in scoring defense (8.6 ppg.) and are giving up the second fewest yards per game (252.8) in the league. Denver has allowed opponents to convert only 2-of-30 (6.7%) third-down attempts in the second half.
  • CB Champ Bailey, who was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Wk. 4, leads all NFL cornerbacks with 44 interceptions since he entered the league in 1999.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

  • K Matt Prater, who was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September, kicked the first game-winning field goal of his threeyear career with a 41-yard make in overtime against the Patriots last week.
  • S Darcel McBath, a rookie from Texas Tech, is tied with veteran ILB Mario Haggan for the team lead with five special-teams tackles.

Thanks to the Broncos PR staff.

this just in. we're pretty good.

I can't believe that we're 5-0. I will be first to omit that I was wrong and everyone else was right… First Dallas and then the Patriots, all the questions I had were answered. I'm glad that bmarsh is growing into a bigger part of our offense.

On another note, I ran across this and thought it was great…

The broncos are really something special this year.

where does the 8.6 ppg stand against the all time mark?

  • herc_rock

Yeah, Prater made the OT kick. but If he makes that one in the first half, Vonnie's sack/fumble ends the game.

OT game winner aside, Prater sucks and he's going to cost us at some point.

  • herc_wrong

“IF Prater makes” the first attempt? Pat's things are saying the same thing about “IF” Gostkowski makes his missed attempt. “IF's”, along with “shoulda, woulda, coulda's” are useless and feeble points. “IF” Brandon Marshall doesn't make that smart play to bat down a tipped pass, it “COULD” have been intercepted, and if that were the case then we “WOULD” have lost the game. Based on that hypothetical, we totally “SHOULD” bench Orton who “sucks and is going to cost us at some point.” See, the argument is ridiculous.

  • herc_rock

Fine, guy. Ignore the first paragraph. That's a little ham-fisted, I'll give you that.

The second paragraph, however, is not and your silly little stream of consciousness there doesn't address it. Prater shanks kicks…with regularity, and it will cost us.
