The Broncos have six draft choices on Sunday, all in the 4th round or later.  Here is their selection schedule (obviously, this is very susceptible to change):

There won’t be a live blog today, but you can use this post as an open forum for Day Two draft discussions.  We’ll be keeping this post on top, and have all of the picks posted for your comment as soon as possible as well.  Thanks, and go Broncos!

I like Brandstater, he might be good one day.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

Are we going to have any draft picks left next year?

  • robtink242

He’s alright you can check out some of his highlights

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Naturally, they used next year’s fifth to do it… sheesh…

  • thenobleyak

what gives? is mcd planning to trade champ bailey and/or brandon marshall for defensive linemen?

  • http://fft.com T-Money

It’s a good backup… He reminds me of drew breeze and a steve berline mix… He’s not all that fast though

  • Justin

Lol both brandstater and brady are named Tom, drafted in the 6th round, and share the same initials, lol. He is in for a long season.

  • http://fft.com T-Money

Who are we taking with out ONE and only 7th round pick next year. Better make it a good one.

  • Justin

I’ll bet we take a kicker with our last pick

  • Steve W

The Broncos have drafted D-lineman for the last 3 years. It takes D-lineman a good three years to develop. Nobody can argue of the physical skills of M Thomas, J Moss, T Crowder, E Dumerville, C Powell and they are all young. Evidently Mike Nolan saw a lot of talent there in our young D lineman so why take a chance on rookies. We did get our top rated D Lineman too. There is no doubt in my mind that our biggest problem on D last year was COACHING. Look what happened to the Chargers D last year when they switched DC’s it was like two different defenses.

Watching the highlights of Moreno http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG4TeNBJWds and it is not hard to see that we just got a for sure franchise RB with our # pick. Say what you want about all the RB’s we have and all of them put together can’t compare to what Moreno brings to the table. His highlights look just like TD to me. He makes moves, he hits the hole fast, plows over defenders and always gets yards not inches after contact. Unless we have major injuries we will score far more points on offense this year than we did last year.

  • D Squared

I agree about moreno, which bronco fan among you can honestly say you haven’t been craving a TRUE #1 RB to go into our system?

  • milehighs`

I love the qg broncos got tom brandstater braet.Good bye jay cutler hellow new qb.

  • DB

I love the Brandstater pick. yeah, hes not fast but we don’t need a quick or fast QB in Mcd system. I like this guys arm, very accurate and he is very distinctive with his throws. I’m gald we picked up a QB for Mcd to mold him into the system. To me, its exciting, i think we’re doing a great job with these picks in the draft.

  • MIAbronco

i projected that brandstater would be drafted by the broncos, sadly i did not put this projection on broncotalk. but i called this one a while ago. he fits the mold of mcd qbs, hes big and from california

  • broncoNM

yup… i agree brandstater is a good 6th rd pick. He has the size that mcd likes and he looks like a typical raw QB with potential that McD could mold into a starter. I have had a day to reflect on this draft… I love moreno and ayers and if Nolan can find a way to upgrade play on the D line i think we will be pleasantly surprised. Our defense on 3rd downs will be much improved. Alfonso Smith and Mcbath are Ballhawks and will immediately upgrade our D on passing downs. If we can some how hold teams on 1st and 2nd downs we will stop alot more drives on 3rd downs. My question for McD would be if our front 7 can hold teams on 1st and 2nd downs so we can get this talent on the field on 3rd downs. We will see an increase on turnovers on defense. Offenses will have to face champ, goodman, alfonso smith, mcbath, hill while having dawkins blitzing.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

At least in this draft there was a strategy behind this draft. The FO knew who they wanted and made moves to get them. They wanted to gett the best player available. McD stated that the run game was “sort of his baby” so he got the BEST AVAILABLE running back. He also got the BEST AVAILABLE blocking tight end to help out the run game.

Ayers was the BEST AVAILABLE defensive player at 18, and Alphonso Smith was the BEST ball hawk corner, who has first round talent. McBath is the BEST ball Hawk safety (see INT numbers on both)

These were not rando picks, as it first seemed to all of us. We now have the most explosive offense in the NFL on paper, and a shored up defense based on creating turnovers.

There has to be a reason that McD didn’t draft in the front 7 as much as we expected. Maybe the DL that we have are capable, especially now that a) we have an actual scheme on defense, and b) we actually have a VERY good DL coach now. These are two things that we can all agree we’re non-existant in the last few seasons.

Try to look at the draft outside of what YOU wanted or expected. This new regime has a plan and a direction that they want to take this team. Control the game, and be extremely efficient on offense, create turnovers on defense to get the ball back to the offense. I am starting to see a game plan develope for the Broncos, an identity. I haven’t seen that in Denver in many years, so I am drinking the orange and blue Kool-Aid. Join me, won’t you nation?

  • MIAbronco

I love our draft now that day 2 is coming to close. if you step back and view the draft for what it is, (a tool for replacing old players). we have a pretty old secondary and we got great players to learn under them, also, with nolans system in place we probably didnt need everybody that we thought we did. we probably already had it and we didnt even know.

  • Anthony

I know everyone is upset about not getting many front seven players as I am as well. But in case everyone forgot in our superbowl years we didn’t have a very good defense either, but we had play makers which is what were going for here, guys that can create turnovers and intercept the ball

  • broncoNM

The only thing that really boggles my mind is trading up for richard quinn? Wouldnt he have been there in the 3rd rd anyway? I know his 12 catches are pretty impressive but he couldnt have been on too many teams draft board for the 3rd rd. right?

  • MIAbronco

worrell williams will be a part of this team by the end of the day, be it through URFA or our 7th rounder, but you have to figure dj will put in the good word for him

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

    BroncoNM

Behind Pettigrew, who was both a blocking and receiving TE, all the other TE were strictly receiving TEs. Quin was the top rated blocking TE and there is a need for that kind of player. There are quite a few teams that could have taken him before our next pick. In short, McD made sure he got the guys that he wanted. I’m sure you recall him saying that having all these picks have the ammunition to move around to get the guys they felt good about. He gave us fair warning

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

not far off the peyton hillis pick….

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

We traded both 3rd’s for the last 2nd and a 4th…pretty even trade I guess.

  • Justin

I hope the broncos can pick up a few talents in rookie free agency. Namely RB Kory Sheets of Purdue and WR Jordan Norwood of Penn State. These are both great competitors and will bring great depth to those positions.

  • broncoNM

jchase… I hear what your saying…I know a good blocking TE will help in the red zone and will definitely help moreno… I guess Quinn was in more demand than i thought…thanks for the explanation.

  • fresbronco

I live in fresno. Brandstater is awful. We nicknamed him badstarter. Ridiculous

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

Also, the deal about trading a first rounder next year for a second rounder this year was potentially a pretty fair deal. Historically, picks in the current draft are worth about one round up in the next years draft. The logic behind that is basically that it is impossible for NEXT years pick to help a team THIS season. The perceived value is higher for a player taken today over a player taken 365 days from now.

  • http://allthingsmcintosh.blogspot.com CABroncoFan

I don’t understand trading two picks to move up 8 slots to get the WR. We have a good set…I’m no fan of Glenn Martinez, but we didn’t need a WR. I’m ok with the QB pick…they needed to grab someone. Looks like Hoyer’s going to be a FA and he looks good. I just don’t agree with trading as many picks as we have…I think there was great depth in this draft and more players competing for roster spots couldn’t have been a bad thing. If any of these guys are duds, it’s really gonna hurt.

please, please take DT Ricky Jean-Francios with #225. He’s an incredible talent that has justifiably fallen. He was at one point a projected #1 overall.

Worrell in FA should happen, and I think he can be a player.

I’m just hoping they know what they’re doing. I sell insurance and they work in football. I guess I should give them the benefit of the doubt. But I’m not comforted by McDouch AT ALL.

RE: RB…and the 7 we have on the squad, let’s get some value for those guys in trades when training camp/preseason injuries come up. Trade Scheffler, get picks next year for him. Jackson can play.

  • Justin

    Final pick is a center

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Blake Schlueter out of TCU, a center.

  • robtink242

    jchase8410
who cares if other teams get him daniel graham is the best blocking TE. i sorry that was the biggest head scratcher in this draft.

  • alm034

NFL.com:Schlueter is a football player, plain and simple. He’s very mature and has unbelievable quickness and agility as an offensive lineman. The question for him is whether or not he can keep his weight up. He had one of the best workouts at TCU of anyone in this year’s draft.

Seems like they’re targeting old school guys in the trenches, smart versatile guys in the skill positions. Sounds like a winning formula to me. Just ask the Steelers.

  • Eric in Vegas

Fox is reporting that the Broncos are shopping Jarvis Moss to try to get back into the 7th round. For who, I wonder?

  • NathanH47

Disapointed we’re walking away without a 5 technique or Nosetackle.

  • http://allthingsmcintosh.blogspot.com CABroncoFan

    a RB

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

    Robtink

I know that Graham is the best blocking TE on our roster. He won’t be around forever, and it may become clear if McD has some special 2-3 TE sets, or goalline sets that he wants to run. I’m not saying that I have any knowledge of exactly WHY McD picked him, but took an educated guess. It is clear that he is one of the guys McD wanted. I’m excited about training camps coming up!

  • kerry

no the biggest head scratcher is why we gave up a first rounder for a Keebler Elf. the second is why didnt we draft a single D-linemen.

  • robtink242

    Jchase8410

one thing is clear is that McDaniels wants to run the football. no other reason to keep our online coach, bobby tunner, keep 2 fullbacks on the roster, sign 3 running backs, draft a running back at 12, keep 3 tight ends ( jeb put.) has to be cut. i’ll have to grow into Brandstater but the kid has an arm.

  • twebb

Well now that the Broncos are finished drafting (unless someone wants Moss), which undrafted free agents do you guys think they’ll go after? Maybe Ricky Jean-Francois, Chris Baker, Mitch King, DL guys that can be cut if they don’t show the team something.

  • robtink242

i hear you but if the guy plays any where DWill played i’ll live with that. I’m not going to comment on the d-line situation. i hope Quinn versatile enough to play end.

  • twebb

well nevermind about Francois, 49ers just took him

  • robtink242

i guess we can trade McDaniels for a second next year. instead of cut him 4 weeks into the season. that wouldn’t leave me scratching my head.

  • FrankieFierce

OK, I realize now Coach has seen more film than me. I was not familiar with the players chosen after Moreno and Ayers.

I being a never die fan look at it this way:

Coming away with the best RB in the game = A+

    Grabbing a starting D line/Lb poss hybrid merriman type = A+

the rest of the draft = ???*

Trading next years first rounder = F-

    *
After looking at the players bios that were unrecognized picks:
Coach may have addressed “the kicking game” side of the ball better than I first realized.

Other than that, I wished we would have picked a LB like Maualuga or WWE kid lourenitis

    Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • broncoNM

    twebb-
I would definitely like to bring in mitch king and see what he’s got… would have loved for francois to go undrafted…thats too bad.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

Oh gawd the Koolaid has taken over here too. For instance:

“We now have the most explosive offense in the NFL on paper, and a shored up defense based on creating turnovers.”

    or

“Also, the deal about trading a first rounder next year for a second rounder this year was potentially a pretty fair deal. Historically, picks in the current draft are worth about one round up in the next years draft. The logic behind that is basically that it is impossible for NEXT years pick to help a team THIS season. The perceived value is higher for a player taken today over a player taken 365 days from now.”

    Really really dumb comments!
Sorry, but give me a freaking break! Of Course next years draft will help more this year than next why not trade every pick from next year then? Oh yeah, how’s that idea treating your investment portfolio? Two in the hand eh? Yeah, I’m thinking a backup plan would have been nice and nevermind that it was going to be a fair 1st rounder vs a mid 2nd… REALLY?

I won’t even comment on the “most explosive offense in the NFL” BS

Josh is on the hot seat for screwing up the Cutler deal so he’s willing to sacrifice good, solid, patient, intelligent moves for help NOW. I hope it works but these are still a bunch of rookies and free agents who’ve never played together before! It takes patience to rebuild a team, do you think Pat’s got much patience left for this BOZO?
    I hope not.

Hopefully he wins and I’ll kiss his pimply ass…

  • broncoNM

Denver should also look at worrell williams LB from Cal… Both him and mitch king have motors.

  • Justin

Worrell is a nearly guaranteed bronco at this point, who wouldn’t want to play with their older, very successful brother? I hope McDaniels brings a bunch of rookie free agent competitors. As others have mentioned mitch king does look look like a decent player. Also, Im convinced rb Kory Sheets and wr Jordan Norwood both have great shots to make the team. Kory has the potential to be the backup to knowshon with hillis seeing carries as fb. I believe Norwood has the potential to take to eventually replace stokely as the 3rd receiver. I dont look for selvin young or correll buckhalter to make the final 53.

  • broncoNM
  • DC

Bad trade for A.S.. We might pick top 10 next year, so we traded a 2nd rounder for top 10 pick. Wow, these people are stupid.

  • DC

And to top it off, we adressed the front seven with 1!!!!! player. We don’t have the personell for an effective 3-4. That sux.
