The Broncos have six draft choices on Sunday, all in the 4th round or later.  Here is their selection schedule (obviously, this is very susceptible to change):

There won’t be a live blog today, but you can use this post as an open forum for Day Two draft discussions.  We’ll be keeping this post on top, and have all of the picks posted for your comment as soon as possible as well.  Thanks, and go Broncos!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

I understand why everyone is freaking out but it’s not that bad. All of these spots are needs. I wish they would pick more defensive line guys but theres not really anyone there. This draft sucks talent wise.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

Kelly… love the optimism. I’m seriously choking on it already though. I’ll be here as a fan regardless. I’ve been here since Morton came over from my Dad’s fave Dallas… Win or Lose.

My optimism faded with the loss of Shanny…
    Worsened with the Cutler debacle…
Faded further with every throat clearing, shady sounding word out of Josh’s mouth…
…Is practically gone with the very poor decisions made in the draft thus far. (Some good players gotten in spite of our needs for WAY THE HELL OFF THEIR VALUE)

I’ve actually been throwing Orange and Blue KoolAid up and out my nose since yesterday’s intense excitement backfired on me.

Let’s get real and put McDaniels on the HOTSEAT he deserves to be on! It’s beyond “let’s have faith”!! It’s “DO OR DIE TIME”

    Who’s with me?

  • Justin

I figured they would pick up the guard and wide receiver but I had the guard going in the 5th and the receiver being addressed in the 7th or in rookie free agency. This season should ultimately be the most interesting in terms of what happens and certainly a test of fan loyalty to say the least.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

It is do or die time I agree.

Knowshon will win games like AP does for the Vikings. The only question I have about Moreno is the number he will wear.

  • kerry

a WR. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. what a joke. McDaniels has turned the Broncos into an NFL punchline.

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

yeah east, they were always going to take a guard – this guy looks like a standard late round find for Dennison.

  • http://www.kellyleephipps.com Kelly in Carolina

Oh I’m with you guys, I think McD is on the hotseat too! He better win now, and winning will cure all the complaining real quick. If he launches a losing crusade this year, after promising we are a win now team, then he deserves the chopping block of failed Patriot castaways. I’m just saving my judgment til at least after I watch the first game and see how the new system goes. I actually have hopes for Moss and Crowder and company under Nolan’s system, and obviously, they do too.

  • jdkchem

    Kelly,
Well we have something else in common – an ex in Charlotte! My daughter and her husband still live in the area.

As for the Broncs, I like all of the picks, however trading for the $37 pick and not making the 1st rounder conditional was dumb and coughing up two #3’s to get a tight-end who most probably would have been there in the 3rd was dumb. I would have liked to see the 2nd 3rd rounder used on McGee. On the other hand people forget how horrible the defense was so any defensive player is an improvement.

Too bad you went to CU, but then DU does not have a football program.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

East is pretty much right except that we’re apparently the only team who thinks there’s no talent out there at our greatest need! Come on!

Kelly, My wife is dying to know when your show airs and what exactly is your compensation… “is it like trading spouses?”

    SanDiegoBronco55
You didn’t take long to sour… lol

    Ian
yeah McD did do the D backfield for a minute over in hoodyville

    God
Please help your closest NFL neighbor?

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    Kerry,

Would rather draft a defensive bust right now? McDaniels comes from a school where you are taught to draft talent before need. Works for Bill Parcells, Belicheck, A.J. Smith, Ozzie Newsome, and Bill Pollan. I’m not super excited about any of the players outside of round 1 but thats because the draft talent is very mediocre this year. Keep that in mind.

  • jdkchem

kerry, you can always go back to being a raiders fan.

  • http://www.kellyleephipps.com Kelly in Carolina

They already aired our show last Friday night on ABC at 8 PM, but they’ll rerun it on the Lifetime channel, cause Lifetime is in love with Wife Swap reruns. They paid us 20 K, and we are the liberal progressive astrologer-massage therapy family who swaps with the rodeo champion realist conservative cowboy family from El Paso.

I guess I get my optimism from the fact that I have five planets in Sagittarius the sign of the enthusiastic optimist. I’m excited to move back to Colorado and root for the NEW broncos. Change is good!

  • (stuck in) raiderland

This will be my only contribution to these discussions:
First, as much as I share everyone’s angst over this draft, let’s all try to remember that the only thing less reliable than mock draft predictions of actual draft-day activity are draft-day predictions of actual draft quality on the field. For that reason alone I think we all have to wait and see how things turn out before going hari-kiri. Also: with the last couple of years excepted (possibly), as I recall, Shanny was kind of a lousy drafter anyway.
Second point– I know we all wanted front seven guys. But as someone already suggested– I forget who, sorry for not attributing this to you if it was your thought– maybe McDaniels really thinks better of the guys already on the roster than all the rest of us do. I can’t completely discount the possibility that he sees something in them that, with good coaching and a new scheme, might work out better than we’re all expecting.
Just trying to be the voice of (slightly optimistic) reason here.

  • kerry

East: what says a D-linemen we draft will be a bust? nothing to suggest that at all.

  • Justin

Perhaps with a super dominant offense that can maintain possession for a majority of the game with being able to score inside the redzone will take a lot of pressure off the defense. Thereby allowing less ridicule for the defense because they won’t nearly be as tired. So an even more powerful offense can result in a slightly better defense, maybe.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

Ok Kerry’s an easy target but I’m more with him than against. The late round picks, to some extent, are expected to be reaches.
Get us a big body dammit!!

And as far as being a Raider fan…
(the worst possible name you could call a true Broncs fan)
Our draft room resembles them! Gawd we should at the very least have TWO 1ST ROUND PICKS to look forward to next year!!
    I could cry!

    …sniff

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

    Thanks Kelly…
    Kewl

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Drafting guys like Corvey Irvin in 3rd round? Come on! He would be 6th or 7th round guy if there were actually some talented defensive linemen out there. Take a look at Robert Ayers Senior Bowl footage. Ayers makes Michael Oher look foolish. Not only can Ayers play as DE he plays standing up, and he posses both bullrush and speed techniques.

Alphonso Smith is a first rounder, and if he was 2 inches taller he would be a top 5 pick.

  • jdkchem

Justin – That is assuming the defense could possibly be in worse than last year. Just the cuts alone made the defense better.

  • Matt

What was the 6th round pick traded for?

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

WR Kenny McKinley Drafted in Fifth

The Broncos only have two draft choices left, both in the seventh round. Lunch time.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

Matt – they used it to move up 8 spots to draft McKinley.

  • Matt

    Ahh thanks for the update.

  • Justin

I’m of course operating under the assumption that the defense will be better. I was never a fan of dre bly and am happy we have some more options and db. Additionally, brian dawkins will bring discipline and focus to a defense that lacked confidence, that alone should put them in the top 25 defenses or so.

  • jdkchem

“Gawd we should at the very least have TWO 1ST ROUND PICKS to look forward to next year!!”

Why? Have people forgotten how truly awful Paymah was/is? The only dumb part about trading next years 1st rounder was no making it conditional. On the other hand McDaniels is sending a message to the rest of the team.

  • soxbigdog

John Clayton says the pick they traded away next season “Has the potential to be the first pick overall in the draft”… ummmm…. I am guessing he doesnt have faith in McD either !!!!

  • Justin

I concur, and thankfully Paymah can get burned in the nfc north from now on. I was a big fan of foxworth because he had great character and was a good cb his rookie year. After that he kind of dropped off and I can understand why he is on his 3rd team.

  • jdkchem

Having a safety who can actually tackle significantly improves the defense, at least in the top 25 or so.

  • kerry

oh great Rhett Bomar is gone. another talent passed by McDaniels. paging Mr McDaniels, your straight jacket and padded room are ready.

  • http://cdn0.sbnation.com/profile_images/111140/La_La_Mascot.jpg WhidbeyBronco

I love McK in this pick! Perfect late round pick. Fast. Long. Cheap.

    Love Moreno and Ayers (East)
Moreno was the absolute wrong pick but could be a star for years to come. Great head on his shoulders, blocks, catches, crashes, jukes lacking speed. Ayers is going to be a starter right off I think but just cause he can play down, doesn’t make him anything anywhere approaching an inside Lineman.

  • jdkchem

Foxy used to do the quit smoking commercials and he is gone. I forget who took the job after him but he got cut. Now Selvin Young is doing the commercials so I expect to see him traded or cut.

  • Justin

Well hopefully we can accumulate draft picks next year by trading scheffler

  • http://fft.com T-Money

Why are we going offese? We need a nose tackle and D line and we go Offesnive guard the WR? Did i miss something when they said defense?

  • Justin

Yeah but they still show the go to college commercials with foxworth in it. Speaking of athletes and commercials I’m so glad we no longer have to put up w/ the most awful Cutler mcdonald’s commercials.

The only dumb part about that? Who trades a first for a second? Why our best one? Usually it’s another second and a later pick or two later picks! Not a first alone, not without conditions! And not the better of our two!! DUH Stupid stupid move! Both channels I was watching and our live blog had guys choking on that move!

  • Justin

Everyone keeps saying we traded our 6th in order to move up to select Kenny McKinley. I heard we just swapped 5th and 6th rounds. So from what I heard we traded our 6th rd #185 for baltimore’s 6th rd #198. Can anyone confirm or deny these rumors?

  • NathanH47

T-Money, I have no f’ing idea. It doesn’t matter how damn good your secondary is if you don’t have a D-Line and OLB’s to get pressure on the QB.

I really thought we took Smith to be a saftey, until we took two more free’s with our next 3 picks. I seriously am having a very hard time justifying some of these picks.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    Justin,

    I heard the same.

    NathanH,

I completely understand these picks. You complain about taking a corner instead of defensive line, but they took Ayers. Also you forget Denver has Marcus Thomas and Kenny Peterson. Carlton Powell will be available this year as well after a year of staying in Denver year round studying the playbook. Powell also scored a 36 on his wonderlic, which is very impressive.

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

I will say this regarding why it was the Broncos pick rather than the Bears – what message is that sending to your players? Do you want to be counting on doing worse than another team, ever?

  • jdkchem

An early second rounder can be worth next years 1st rounder. It all depends on how well you think you’re going to do. Not making that pick conditional was dumb.
You’re assuming that next years 1st rounder has equal value to a 1st round pick this year. That would be incorrect.

  • stav

I’ve been chomping at the bit to get online with everyone, I was out of town this weekend but I did catch 10 minutes of the draft, my quick rundown/critique even if you’ve gone through all this so far (deal with it, I haven’t posted in a while anyway):

Knowshon at #12? I guess so. I thought Orakpo but he needed focus and 20lbs. No way an LB that early. Seemed more of a keep him off the The Dolts roster move. I guess Selvin Young can start looking for a new team as someone has to be cut now, maybe Torrain, I wish Jordan.

Ayers at #18 – thank god a defensive pick. Mayock loved Cutler and he was pretty on the money, he also loves Ayers, hopefully that works out.

Can’t get upset about trading our natural #1 next year, does any team want to pay four #1’s in two years, no, I get it, but here’s a few names:

Brace, Maualuga, E. Brown, Sintim, Michael Johnson, even Jarron Gilbert. Why a DB so early when we need DE/DL/ILB’s?

Richard Quinn at #64 when we need to hit the QB? What the f**k? What did he have, 9 catches?

I really, REALLY like the McBath pick – solid, but still what does this draft tell me? They want to experiment with the garbage of past drafts that’s left over? Moss, Crowder, Thomas? I guess Thomas will have a chance on the DL, its worth the experiment, but no Ron Brace, no ILB?

David Bruton? Guys, we all have the misery of watching Notre Dame nationally, Bruton is flawed, big time.

Best Bronco move of the day, not selecting Josh Freeman – serious.

That’s it, I’m done. If I had to give a grade, C+, maybe B-, only because they got the best RB and potentially an DL impact player in Ayers. We’ll see. Disappointing though overall considering our needs.

  • broncoNM

I would have liked for us to take a LB with the #141 pick…I was really pulling for jasper brinkley or scott mckillop…

  • D Squared

I’ll be the first to admit that this draft has puzzled me. I thought as we all did that the Broncos would tackle the front 7. obviously the team decided they could get better value for their picks elsewhere. i would much rather get quality players at positions we dont necessarily need than defensive busts. Mr. East makes very good points we still have d linemen (im really excited to see carlton powell). it is way to early to start calling for McD’s head. he’s a new coach with his own way of doing things. at least we know that with him in town the broncos will be an exciting organization to watch because they wont be predictable.

  • Justin

If we have a 6th round there is a possibility still of worrel williams or zach follett

  • milehighs`

    broncos fail.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    Oh no… not you.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

    Nice pick!

  • robtink242

    tom branstater

  • http://broncotalk.net Kyle

The Broncos just traded into the 6th round to select a quarterback – Tom Brandstater, of Fresno State.

  • Justin

I feel bad for that guy because now he is gonna be expected to be the next Tom Brady
