The Denver Broncos addressed the secondary for the second time Saturday by drafting Texas Tech safety Darcel McBath in the second round. A first-team All Big 12 safety in 2008, McBath (6’0″, 198) moved from corner to safety during his time at Texas Tech and tallied 218 tackles and 11 interceptions in his career (70 and 6 respectively in 2008).

“I’m excited. I’m excited about the future, I’m excited about what’s going to happen,” McBath told reporters Saturday. “I’m going to try to fit in and do my part on the team.”

McBath is the latest move that Josh McDaniels has made in the secondary in both free agency and the draft. Broncos fans will be looking at a completely revamped back four this September – and that’s a good thing. More quotes after the jump.

On overall impressions of Broncos

“I’m excited. I’m excited about the future, I’m excited about what’s going to happen. I’m going to try to fit in and do my part on the team.”

On transition from cornerback to safety at Texas Tech

“Moving to safety was a priority thing. When I moved there, I did a good job so they wanted to keep me there. Our safeties are the cornerstone of our defense, we make all the calls. After a while, I kind of got locked in that position. I stayed there and I became a pretty good player at the position.”

On how his cornerback experience helped in the transition to safety

“It just helped me with my ball skills, playing deep balls. And as far as interceptions and returns, it kind of helped me because instead of playing it like a run, I was playing it more as a cover free safety and not a corner.”

On playing with CB Champ Bailey and S Brian Dawkins

“I’m blessed because I get to come into a system that has two future Hall of Famers; those guys are great. My eyes are going to be wide open and I’m going to be trying to learn from those two guys. Those two guys alone, if I can pick up anything from them, I’ll be a better player.”

On competition faced in college (Texas Tech)

“Playing in the Big 12 I’ve seen some of the best receivers, some of the best talent, in the country. Playing against (Michael) Crabtree everyday… (inaudible), we had fun doing it. I enjoyed it because it was a battle everyday to get better. If he beat me, or if I beat him, it was a battle everyday to get better. I just wanted to get better everyday and playing in the Big 12, you can’t help but do that. So I was happy I got a chance to play in the Big 12.”

another guy we didnt need. William Moore and Rashad Johnson available, but no we take this guy.

dude this guy is good….i love how ewhen it comes to drafts everyone is an expert. haha i just realized this, dude we got way better today as a football team…every freakin team did…Are there question marks at the picks we drafted-no shit, of course, moreno at 12? really? giving a first rounder for smith, in the second round? wow. but the biggest- richard quinn for 2 third rounders when we have both kinds of TEs already….maybe we are gonna trade some RBs and sheff tom. morning to get the 3 rounders back….just saying-

but hey, we def got way better today as team- Moreno is the franchise back we wanted, then hillis at FB, those are some threats right there…Ayers, okay….Smith, dude had 21 INTs and is a money instinctive nickel corner, will be a playmaker, i like…mcbath, learn from dawkins and goodman, the future safety, i like…quinn? thats a question mark…..but dude we got better as a team- did i want other players? sure, of course, but dude we got better today overall…Game on.

Also, One more thing- obviously we didnt address more of the front seven because maybe Nolan and McDaniels liked what they saw on videotape form the minicamp..with Elvis, Moss, Ayers playin outside backs, Bailey coming back…thats a lot of speed to come off the edge…i like…dude. i like it…

And remember what Xanders and McD said- they wanted to get smart, tough, instinctive football players who play hard…i think we definitely got that with Moreno and CB Smith

As fans, we can obviously yell and scream and criticize cuz we love our team- and i did the same…but looking at the pick- I like them, we didnt go after the big names, maily, minus Moreno…but im sure it’ll work out.

K last thing- Give McDaniels a freakin break! Let him coach the training camp and at least a GAME!!! to decide if hes gone are not….my god. I there with ya on some questionable moves- if he sucks next year, Ill be pissed and want his head- but let him coach a game for god sake!

    Go BRONCOS…

i agree sdbronco….we picked up GOOD players and play makers that made us a better team today..

  • kerry

we paid a first round pick next year for a nickelback. yeah great trade there. PFFFFFFFTTTTTTTTT. we traded two mid third round picks for the 9th reanked TE in the college. yeah another great pick. we passed on Orakpo for Moreno when we already had like 765 RB’s on the roster already. and we selected MCBath when Rashad Johnson was still available. seriously everybody is laughing at the Broncos. we have become the laughingstock of the NFL. they say the LIONS had a better draft then we did.

    From John Clayton:

    5. Denver rookie head coach Josh McDaniels doesn’t have a grasp on how to build a team. He signed three running backs in free agency and drafted another (Knowshon Moreno). And then he sent Denver’s first-round choice in 2010 to Seattle for this year’s 37th overall choice, which he used to pick cornerback Alphonso Smith. That’s bizarre. Mike Shanahan must be laughing at that one.

  • broncoNM

I definitely question this draft but john clayton doesnt know shit about building a team.

  • J

What made Clayton the expert in rebuilding team? His coaching career or gm career???

  • SanDiegoBronco55

hahahahah John Clayton is SOFA KING WE TOD ID……right behind “J” …like Clayton knows anything about building a team…hahahah

  • steve

yea agreed, clayton knows about as much about building a team as i know about the players we drafted in the second round, which is not much. So, my question is, why not give McD a chance? None of us know these players well enough to judge whether it was a good pick or not without having seen them play. I am gonna stick behind my team and my head coach. Who knows, maybe we’ll look back on this as a great draft.

And i definitely agree with sandiego bronco, we got a lot better today, esp in the secondary. remember last year how few interceptions we had? opposing qb’s could throw against us like it was practice. NOT ANYMORE. Champ, Dawkins, Smith, Hill, all these guys are good

And remember last year how we ended up with 7 rbs on IR? and now you guys are pissed cuz we signed some good rb’s in free agency and drafted the best one in the country?!?! That just doesnt make sense to me. I personally am ecstatic about getting moreno. I am buying his jersey asap. He is gonna be a beast, and a steal at 12 i think.

    GO BRONCOS!!!
