Kudos to Rich Eisen who respectfully played hardball with Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler. Jay really didn’t want to answer some of those questions, so he stammered and I’m not exactly sure what he meant in any of his responses. As a guy who bleeds orange and blue, I’m not sure what to think in this day and age. Check this.

  • NathanH

McDaniels system doesn’t require a “franchise” quarterback. Continue to spend picks on D, build the best d in the league, and make a run like the Bears did a couple years back with the terrible Rex Grossman. We certainly have a better o in place then that team and I think McDaniels system could get a lot more out of Orton or any other decent QB for that matter then you guys think.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

With our two first round picks, I would like to see we draft Raji with the 12th pick, and than get either of the following for the 18th pick: Malcolm Jenkins, Rey Maluega, James Laurinities, or Knowshon Moreno. Jenkins due to the fact that we could switch him to a safety or a corner

  • DB

I don’t see why people think Mcdaniels screwed things up. I mean, we all know he wnated Cutler as his QB but it couldn’t work out, so he went and did the next best thing. I think we are gonna surprize a lot of teams this year. Orton is a great QB and a team leader. He has won in this league and has ALMOST proven himself. And i think McD can help Orton do just that!!

Jared, your laughing now but the season hasnt started yet. I wouldnt be talking so much crap if i were you. I cant wait till Broncos win the AFC West.

  • kerry

yeah Joe ill explain it to you. the bears gave up Orton, not because he is bad, but because Cutler is far better. DUH!!! Orton may not be the long term answer, but neither is Brady Quinn!! you wanna trade picks then sit him on the bench behind Orton??!! are you crazy?? there is a reason why Quinn fell so far in the draft. and McDaniels doesnt want him anyway otherwise he would have dealt directly with Cleveland. Orton is 15-2 at home as a starter and won 11 games as a rookie. Quinn hasnt done shit in this league to warrent trading a first round pick for him. and here is another thing, Quinn was drafted at 22, you wanna give up a higher pick then what he was originally drafted at when he hasnt done a single thing in this league?? PFFFFFTTTTTTTTT if ANYTHING Orton starts this year, and next we draft Bradford or McCoy or Tebow. we have 2 first round picks so one of them can be had. and maybe Orton is the longterm solution. ever think of that? he played in a conservative offense in Chicago and is now gonna play for a wide open offense. Orton is a young QB! just like Cutler and is way more accomplished then Quinn! Quinn has done NOTHING in this league and is way overrated. Orton has won in this league. Quinn has not.

  • kerry

oh and here is another thing. this offense is gonna be more wide open for Orton. he has a far better group of receivers and O-linemen then he did in Chicago. Orton is gonna manage games alot better with the weapons he has available to him.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

    Alright Kerry,
I agree with you with the Orton deal. We wont know if he is the answer until after the season when we are either in the playoffs, or cussing and lookin’ into the offseason. I have hopes for Orton. But like you said, he will have weapons around him here that he did not have in Chicago, right? And yes, we all know he has a winning record with what he worked with over at Chicago, and thats good. But what makes you think that Quinn would not be better here than he would in Cleveland? They blow more ass than Chicago. This is the point I’m trying to make. I think he could do something in our system. And if you read my posts after that one that you are responding to, I had said that I would give up a 3rd round and Chris Simms for Quinn, any day. And I would still do that. Simms has not started, let alone played anything at all since his injury. And yes, your going to say “Well Quinn has not done anything in this league and it took years for him to get any playing time…..etc.” But the difference is, we would not pay Quinn $6 million for two years.
But to get to something else that we can talk about, what do you think Denver’s final season record will be? Do you think we will beat the Chargers, let alone our division?
And who do you say we take with our first to picks in the first round? I say Raji and Jenkins. You agree, Kerry?

  • milehighs

broncos and mc d are so roung.they know it everyone knows it.they just got rid of elway.jay didnt want to play for mc daniels .the one that broke up the nfls top offnce this year and the gratest ever.we did it all for criss and kyle what a major screw up i wont suport the broncos in any way.utile mc d. is gone.bolen give your broncos to shanahan.if you realy care about the broncos you will.i wonder what shanahan thoughts on all this crap.

  • kerry

    Joe:

no i dont think Quinn could do anything here. and there isnt anyway Cleveland would just give him away for Simms and a third round pick. if they would do that then McDaniels could have done that AND pulled of the Cutler trade. and another thing is that Quinn has weapons in Cleveland like we do here. last year they had Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow, Dante Stallworth and Jamal Lewis with Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach protecting him. Orton did more with less and in a far more conservative offense.

but lets see, no i dont agree the Malcolm Jenkins at 18. MCDaniels signed a few secondary players this offseason so secondary wont be addressed until later rounds for depth. ive said all season and offseason we need to address the ENITRE D-line. Raji at 12, HELL YEAH!! thats who ive been begging for. then DE Tyson Jackson at 18. a better D-line will make the secondary better. not the other way around.

final record im predicting 6-10 or 7-9. no i dont see us beating the Chargers. we have the third toughest schedule in football and with all the changes we will be LUCKY to win 7 games.

  • robtink242

joe who the hell is Troy Smith he was a beast in college and owns a Heisman trophy. From what he played in the preseason he has great potential and he has power in his arm. now what does Quinn have? yeah Brady Quinn couldn’t beat the 29th ranked Defense with Kellen Winslow, Braylon Edwards, Donte Stallworth and Jamal Lewis. Troy Smith receiving crop isn’t nearly as talented and I’m sure he beats with Cleveland’s D.

  • roshon2411

I can’t believe Denver potentially could be going into the season with Chris Simms and Kyle Orton as their QB’s. One guy who hasn’t thrown a pass in two years and the other I believe has one 300 yard passing game in his career. I also see a couple people post that he has playoff experience. Not true, he lost the starting postion to Grossman. The only playoff experience he has is from the bench. Wow, is Denver going to bring in Bradlee Van Pelt to compete as well? McDaniels screwed the pooch on this one. Don’t give me this crap, “Look what he did with Matt Cassel”. Yeah Matt Cassel took an 18-1 team and went 11-5. Matt Cassel is just going to follow in the footsteps of other one year bums like Derek Anderson and Scott Mitchell. Besides McDaniels rode the coattails of what Charlie Weis built in NE but Denver is just going to be the latest team to find out being a assistent on a Super Bowl winning team doesn’t make you a good head coach. (Norv Turner, Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weiss, Dave Wandstadt, Buddy Ryan, Greg Robinson, Marvin Lewis) Hell the last cordinator I can think of, who did succeed was Shanny. Ironic. I think go with Jeff Garcia for one/two years. He is the one QB out there with playoff experience. If you want to try to experiment with the QB position I like the idea of Troy Smith. The guy as outperformed Quinn before. Besides he wouldn’t cost them a high draft pick. The other guy i thought of was, David Carr. I think he had the potential but was stuck behind a ridiculous line. Throw him behind Harris, Clady and the rest of the team. A 6th rounder would probably get either.

  • kerry

uh yeah Troy Smith does have a heisman trophy. which in the NFL translates to…….SHIT!! Troy Smith fell to the fifth round because he doesnt have the tools to play QB fulltime in the NFL. he is too short and too willing to run before making the correct reads. Heisman Trophys mean nothing when getting into the NFL. look at these guys:

Eric Crouch QB Nebraska. heisman trophy and drafted in the 3rd round by St Louis to play WR not QB.

Jason White QB Oklahoma. Heisman trophy winner and one time runner up to the heisman winner. not even drafted!

Matt Leinart QB USC. heisman trophy winner. do i really need to list the rest? and is now riding the pine.

Reggie Bush RB USC. heisman trophy winner and the most overhyped and highest drafted 2 down RB/slot receiver in the history of the NFL. afraid to run inside and is more of a receiver then anything.

Ron Dayne RB Wisconsin. heisman trophy winner and………..hmmm nothing else worth mentioning.

Danny Weurffel QB Florida. heisman trophy and………see above ron dayne.

OJ Simpson RB USC. heisman trophy winner. ok he was good….at murdering his wife and Ron Goldman.

my point is the Heisman Trophy doesnt mean anything when getting to the NFL.

    Ozzybeef . . . . Thanks for the Afternoon Saloon turn on . . . .

    Jiminy Crickets . . . I leave for a week out of town and it all hit the fan . . . . This kid grows up in Santa Claus, Indiana . . . roots for the Chicago Bears all his life . . . Da’ Bears . . . . get’s traded to this team . . . . Truly a lifetime dream come true . . .

I have read blogs from different cities . . . . and this one was the best . . . please go to this blog if you want to hear real enthusiasm about this trade . . . .

    http://sports.espn.go.com/stations/player?context=podcast&id=4038180 . . . maybe you have better to offer . . . .

and the only thing that Pat Bowlen said that made any sense in his press conference was, “I’m glad he’s in the NFC.” . . . .

    Yeah you . . . and every body else in the AFC . . . . I can see his mutant half-brother Phillip Rivers going, . . . ”Whoooa . . . . Thank you Lord,” . . . .

And all the teams in the NFC North going, “Oh that’s just what we wanted to hear,” . . . .

    I am a die-hard Bronco fan . . . . but I believe in karma . . . I only hope that the Bronco’s under their new regime can win the AFC West, Division, and Conference Championships . . . .

But I certainly hope we do not face the Chicago Bears in the Superbowl . . . . even Hollywood could not come up with a script like that . . . .

  • Mike

It’s about posessions people… Coach McD said it all. We were terrible, close to last in the division in drives of 2 mins or less. 32nd in Kick off returns. We were #3 in yards, but below average it points scored?? Especially in the red zone?? Winning QBs, with a good defense of bad, score in the red zone… period!!

When will we realize that is about pesessions…Quality posessions! Our offense put our defense is as many bad positions.

Calm down everybody. I believe that we keep our picks and solidify our Defense. If Kyle or Chris do not workout we can always trade up for a QB in next years draft, which will be the year of the QB anyway.

I am all for a Bears Broncos superbowl. Coach McD would tear Cutler apart in prep. Cutler has no work ethic. McD would eat him alive in game prep. Even though it’s meaningless, I forsee an blowout preseason game.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

I read every comment so far up to 62…the only thing I have to say is this…I feel like I have to explain the difference between then and than.

“then” has to do with a series of events, i.e. I went to the store, THEN I came home and put away the groceries.

“than” has to do with a comparison, i.e. The Lakers are a much better team THAN the Clippers.

I don’t want to be the grammar police, but it is one of my pet peaves.

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money: Link Ambassador

    Tom~

Have you looked at the schedual lately. I think we are in for a rough season IF we can’t fix the defense. That in my eyes is the only weakness, and special teams. I much as i would like to personally punch JMcD in the face, you have to respect his offensive state of mind (and i’m referring to his BACKGROUND).

Life is full of changes. MOST of the time it’s a good thing. Take what you have and move on.

  • steve

what i liked was brandon marshalls reaction. check it out. b-marsh is THE MAN. hes our franchise player now.

    Kerry,
Yeah they all won Heisman’s but everyone you named won because of the system they were in. Ohio State doesn’t produce QB’s and has never been pass happy college, such USC or Florida. Yes he did fall to the fifth round because he was considered to short to play. But he is 6′, same size as Drew Brees. Got a cannon for an arm. I don’t know why you think he looks to run instead of making the reads? Is it because he’s black? He only rushed for 204 yards during his heisman year. I just made the statment that he out performed Brady Quinn in college and I would rather give up a 6 round pick for him instead a 1st round pick for Quinn. Smith was going to start over Joe Flacco at the beginning of last year before complications from tonsillitis. Also for every heisman bust out there, there are also the ones that did well, Barry, Eddie George, Tim Brown, Charles Woodson, Marcus Allen and I’m no way saying Troy Smith is in any of their leagues but he is also not Danny Wuefful, Jason White, or Eric Couch.

As for jchase8410, relax, this is a blog not a dissertation. Besides, it’s pet peeves not “pet peaves”.

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money

Does anybody else find it mildly interesting that on the day of the trade it shows cutler holding a bears jersey (also online to buy) and not Kyle Orton? I find that strange.

  • Stav

We forgot about Gino Torretta & Andre Ware – Heisman means nothing in the NFL.

With five picks in the first 84 picks? we need to go D-D-D-D-O. We don’t trade up, we don’t trade down. Stay where we are, get three, possibly four starters to the defense for this year, because WE NEED IT. McD said it in that 20min radio interview, #2 in offense but we couldn’t score for shit. What do a bunch of yds mean if we can’t get 6pts at the end of a drive? Our schedule is rough, ROUGH, this year. It’ll be the first year of McD’s system aka growing pains. We need to move our defense from 29 to atleast 17-20 this year, and that is a huge jump for one year but possible with proper drafting. No one on these boards can say that they wouldn’t take dropping down to #12 – #15 in offense, which is probably going to happen anyway, if we can bring the defense up to 17-20. Its called balance.

Raji (if he’s there)/Jackson (if Raji’s gone), Maualuga (#18 HAS TO BE a linebacker), Chung (young hard hitting safety – 4.54 in the 40 at the combine) with the first three. Maybe Sen’Derrick Marks, DT/DE from Auburn for the third pick, but we can’t forget about Marcus Thomas to play DE in the 3-4 if we can grab Raji.

Kudos on the Marshall comments, I applauded him on Saturday. Took the company line and put his support behind the coach, “4500 and 25tds doesn’t mean anything if you can’t win.” How true. Is the man-child growing up? I dunno, but whatever he says and whenever he’s ready for action, Goodell is going to have a final say in how screwed he’ll/we’ll be in the first few games (hopefully four max).

  • Tom9798

    T-Money . . .

I’m excited about the Bronco’s this year . . . not only has the offense improved with the competition at QB (Simms and Orton will be just fine), RB and the addition of Gaffney at WR . . . but we managed to steal a lightning fast defensive backfield from the Dolphin’s with Hill and Goodman . . . and an All-Pro Brian Dawkins to mentor them along with the Bailey brothers .

I still feel getting Reid from Indy and Fields from S.F was huge . . . and I have no problem swapping them at NT . . . we have two pressing needs to address . . . the pass rush and special teams . . .

We had no pass rush the last three years . . . period. . . QB’s such as Rivers, Brady/Cassel, Manning, Big Ben . . . have all day to find whatever WR they need to throw to . . . that is why I have intimated in previous blogs that I would trade up or find some package that would get us the pick from the Rams . . . .

I do not want to see Orapko or Curry on the Kansas City Chiefs . . . especially Orapko (research this guy). . . this guy is a Changeling . . . he is not from this planet . . . he is wicked fast . . . I want him on our team at all cost!

I dream of Orapko on one side . . . Curry on the other . . . D.J. Williams and Boss Bailey playing the insides . . . and watching Rivers pick himself off the ground saying, “who hit me and where did they come from?”. . . again and again and again . . . same for any other QB . . . no luxury of time to find anybody to throw to . . .

There has been nothing “Special” about our Special Teams . . . we wallow in mediocrity and the best we hope for is not fumbling rather than the other team hoping we do not score every time they punt or kick-off to us . . . this has to change . . . imagine if we could count on our Special Teams to score seven points per game . . . Other teams DO! . . .

    We’ll see . . . we have the Draft picks and personnel to get creative . . . I want that pick from the Rams . . . .

  • broncoNM

rotoworld.com has a report from SI peter king that McD looked at tape of all 3 possible QB’s that were involved with trade talks (luke mccown, jason campbell, kyle orton) and he was most impressed with Orton. Simms will compete but its Orton’s job to lose…I like reading this because it supports the fact that we will not trade up to get a QB or the fact that we will NOT draft a QB early… Im happy with Orton and im sure that McD is too…I hope we dont take sanchez even if he is available at 12. I say we go defense early and often…If we do draft a QB i hope its in the mid to late rounds.

am i the only person who wishes football season would start tomorrow?

  • Stav

mikebirty – i love baseball, but nothing compares to the 1st NFL weekend in September sports-wise. And with all this Bronco drama since December, all I want to see now is the new look Broncos, QB & Defense. Its going be a long and difficult wait for August.

We shouldn’t even touch a Qb this year. We have two #1 again next year, with the first one probably being anywhere from 5 (unfortunately) to 12. If there’s someone we need to have at QB next year we’ll have the picks to move up and grab him. As much as some of us want to drag him down, we have to give Orton a chance. He did START for a 9-7 team, and his stats should only be better with this huge upgrade in o-line and receivers that he has now. We have a QB comp for this year, if it blows up in our face and one of them can’t do the job, we have the 2010 picks to move up and get our guy. These are all the top QB’s who will be and most likely be declaring next year: Tebow, Bradford, McCoy, Dan LeFevour, Zach Robinson, and Jevan Snead. Four of these guys go in the first two rounds next year. We can wait on QB till then.

What’s the point of riding out the Cutler Bashing? Regardless of whether or not what you feel, is there really a reason to drag this out any further?

  • milehighs

YES THIER IS A RESON TO DRAG THIS OUT FURTHER.i want to let every one know howthe broncos are idiont.besides tring to get more fans no to suport the idiots that rep. the broncos.they destroyed the broncos.so thats why i bring it up and i wont let go intill f a g mcd is out of denver and bowlen sell.

  • Stav

Why is this guy posting anything? Can you just post relevant comments? Cutler’s gone, who cares now? I sure as hell don’t. Any Bronco fan who wants to jump on the Cutler bandwagon go ahead, you were never a fan of the Orange and Blue in the first place. Root for the jersey as players come and go, this one is gone as there’s no point in discussing him anymore.

  • milehighs

i wish the broncos play bears this year so we could get are a s s kicked and show all you fans thet mc daniels sucks a s s and bowlen has alltimers.al davis woldnt trade cuttler shows how dunb the broncos are

Pre-Season Game 3 in Denver. You really don’t know anything do you?

  • Stav

That’s great thinking, you’d rather see the Broncos lose, than win? Hmmm…yeah, that makes sense. You do realize that every game the Bears lose gives us a better first round pick in 2010, right? When you use Al Davis as an example of what to do, then you know you’ve lost your credibility. Don’t worry about ass-kickings, we’ll be on the wrong end of a few of those from the NFC East and San Diego this year.

yeah thats it. i said Troy Smith runs first and throws second because he is black. gee you found me out sherlock. way to be a great detective. PFFFFFFFFFTTTTTTTT!!! you are a moron. but you must be black otherwise the racecard wouldnt have come up at all. i could care less what color he is. the bottomline is he fell to the 5th round because he does not have the intangibles to play in the NFL. heisman trophy is the most OVERRATED piece of hardware on earth. and Smith was not starting over Flacco. the competition in Baltimore was an open competition. Smith wasnt named the starter for anything. not one single scout of analyst projected him to go higer then the fourth round and if he was so good teams would be lining up to trade for him. which nobody is. but im sure thats because he is black right? not because he actually isnt that good but because he is black. u mentioned above Smith looked good in preseason. yeah so what? so did Matt Leinart and what happened to him? oh yeah he rode the pine for the year. also a Heisman winner.

  • Stav

idiot, stupid, idiot. Its like I’m nine again with my two brothers. I’m actually laughing aloud about the plural used referring to the Bears winning multiple SB’s. Ohhhh mercy, this guy is good!! If you think Cutler partied in Denver? My god, this guy is going to show up for games WASTED. In one corner Chi-Town, in the other corner Jay Cutler – winner by TKO in the 2nd round (night), Chicago Nightlife and the Barcrawl!!!!!! Cutler’s liver will be the real one suffering here. Seriously though – give me a break.

Let’s not get crazy people, here’s a game of guess who: 33 td’s/19ints – 4100 yds – 88.7 rating – 2tds rushing and a ProBowl appearance. Who would sign up for those stats, all of you right, right? Who is this mystery QB? Anyone, anyone?

Vinny Testaverde in 1996. We can’t go crazy on Cutler’s ONE PROBOWL appearance and stats.

I guess Royal, Marshall, Stokely, Scheffler, and Graham had nothing to do with Cutler’s stats, right? I guess Cutler would dropback, chuck the ball, and then sprint down the field to catch all his passes. That’s what it sounds like to me. Like he put all these numbers up on his own. Yeah, I think that’s the way it happened. Marshall neeeevvvvvveeeerrrr got any yds after the catch, right?

Sickening. Absolutely sickening. Good riddance Jay. I wanted to believe in you, but you’re just a disappointment.

  • roshon2411

    Kerry,
I’m actually white from rural america. So you would be the moron and racist. Clearly your statement that Troy Smith is a run first QB is due to his skin color. I threw the stats at you stating thats not true. However, you clearly ignored them. Never in my post did I say because he won the Heisman he should play. He has a good arm, quick feet, and the poise to play for McDaniels offense. You say he doesn’t have the intangibles to play, well explain what intangibles would that be? What does the scouts predictions mean for weather a person can play in the NFL. As a Bronco fan remember, TD went in the Sixth. Mecklenberg the 12th. He was named the starter in the preseason, but that doesn’t mean the competition was over. He was just given the chance to start, meaning he was competing with Flacco thru training camp and the preseason. Troy Smith did look good in the Preseason and that doesn’t mean a whole lot. Orton hasn’t look good in 4 seasons, hell, he kept losing out to Rex Grossman. You don’t have to like my idea, but don’t belittle my idea with a comment thats not true. Michael Vick, Vince Young, Tim Tebow, and Eric Crouch were/are run first QB’s, Troy Smith never was… My statement was for the people the wanted Quinn. The same reason people like Quinn is the same reason I like Troy. The performed in college and have no real experience in the pros. If Denver was to bring in an unexperienced QB, I would take Smith for a 6th Round instead of Quinn for a 1st. But I also said I would take David Carr as well.
