Jay Cutler wants out

Jay Cutler wants out

News just in! Pat Bowlen is not happy with Jay Cutler. Sorry for the picture, it was just too hilarious not to put up, no matter what your opinion is. So now where will this vexed quarterback land? Well this is the NFL so there are a slew of theories. According to Yahoo Sports, nine teams are interested in Cutler.

Several league personnel sources confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that at least six teams are expected to be seriously involved in trade talks: the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns. The Jacksonville Jaguars have also shown interest, while the Minnesota Vikings actually pulled the plug on trade negotiations for Cutler back in February.

That’s just eight teams right there, the article further reports that the Redskins are in the market for Cutler as well. Many of you will think, “they’re content because Jason Campbell is their passer.” The article explains, that Jim Zorn and Dan ‘Money Bags’ Synder went out to visit USC players Mark Sanchez and  Brian Cushing, but they were possibly more interested in Sanchez. Synder may stop at nothing to make Jay Cuter a skin, and there has been unofficial reports of Synder meeting with Mike Shanahan.  I don’t feel as this trade will be a viable option for Denver because they won’t want Jason Campbell. Denver must have a replacement quarterback unless they feel like Chris Simms can do the job.

Trade Scenarios

Keep in mind that all of these scenarios are just that. The accuracy or validity of this article cannot be verified because we are an unofficial Denver Broncos Blog and News Site. Therefore if this article provokes any feelings of malcontent you should just remember that it’s a blog and people are bouncing around ideas and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, except Kerry. Just kidding Kerry, you know we all love you, I even gave you a tag.

  • Jay Cutler for Brady Quinn, 1st-2nd rounder, or Shaun Rogers.

Anyone interested in a Brady Quinn? This trade would sent Cutler to Cleveland and Quinn to Denver along with put off defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. If Cleveland wants to hold on to the gargantuan that is Rogers then they will have to replace him with a draft pick as high as first rounder and as low as a second. Josh McDaniels cannot afford to accept a 2010 draft pick, the term ‘next season’ should not be in his vocabulary.

  • Jay Cutler for 1st and 20th overall in 2009 Draft.

This is a gutsy trade. The first overall pick and the 20th overall pick for Jay Cutler. From here Denver will wield 3 first rounders, this means they have the capability to draft Matt Stafford, Tyson Jackson, and a outside linebacker like Larry English or Aaron Maybin. That is just one of several possibilities. Take into account trading one or more of those first rounders and Denver could land B.J. Raji, Aaron Curry, or heck really anyone with those kind of picks. The two main problems with this reside in trusting a rookie quarterback, really just rookie players, and the kind of money it would take to sign multiple first round guys, especially if two are taken in the top 12.

  • Jay Cutler for Trent Edwards, 11th overall, and 2nd-4th rounder.
Jay Cutler & Tony Scheffler for Trent Edwards, Donte Whitner, or 1st-2nders.

If Denver sends Jay Cutler to upstate New York you should expect seeing Trent Edwards another player, or some draft picks en-route to the Mile High city. Many analysts deem Edwards as one of the most underrated passers in the league. This 25 year old is 6’4, 231 pounds, and plays mostly from the pocket like a New England style quarterback. Edwards has never had a dynamic receiver to throw to and just like Cutler is on a team with a porous defense. Also, Edwards’ left tackle “Pro-Bowler” Jason Peters gave up 11.5 sacks, the most in the NFL last season. With all that being said it’s still hard to say that Trent Edwards is the kind of guy you’d want as your guy replacing Jay Cutler. Josh McDaniels has had a lot experience up against Edwards so that could play into effect. Buffalo is in serious need of a tight end and a package deal of Cutler and Tony Scheffler could reel in some good draft picks or players such as Donte Whitner. Whitner is a great up and coming safety in this league.

  • Jay Cutler for Jason Campbell, 13th overall, plus a second and third rounder.
Jay Cutler for Jason Campbell and LaRon Landry.

It is no secret that Dan Synder loves to spend his money. Synder loves to make the Redskins the New York Yankees of the NFL. This trade would have to involve Cutler for Jampbell and many picks. I wrote previously that there has been some unconfirmed and unofficial reports (rumors is the real word) that Shanahan has had meetings with Synder and if it’s true they’re probably not talking about golf. This trade will be very hard for the Redskins to pull off, they will have somehow provide a good quarterback with draft picks, or LaRon Landry and draft picks. I just don’t see this happening, Landry is hands down one of the best safeties in the game and both Landry and Jampbell would be way too much for Washington to give up. I wouldn’t put it past good old ‘Money Bags’ Synder to do what he does best, spend a fortune on hyped up players who critics call overrated.

The wildcard in all of these trade scenarios is Chris Simms. If McDaniels feels like Simms can handle the starting job, then we will see a completely different kind of trade. That’s all I have for today. There are more teams to analyze but a man has got to get to work.

Now it’s time for you Bronco Nation. Where do you think Cutler will land? What are the prospects from other teams? It’s your turn to make the decision.

Anthony33: On who is lying about Cutler not answering Bowlen’s or the Broncos calls for 10 days, while Cutler claims they didn’t call him until yesterday, here’s the Bronco’s response to Cutler’s side of the story:

In a statement released last night by the Broncos, team owner Pat Bowlen said that “numerous attempts to contact Jay Cutler in the last 10 days, both by head coach Josh McDaniels and myself, have been unsuccessful.”

Cutler’s camp says that’s just not so.

Sources close to Culter told NFL.com senior columnist Thomas George today that the quarterback contends he has not received any such calls from the Broncos.

Sources close to Bowlen responded to George in five words: “We have the phone records.”

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

Best interest for the Broncos? Yeah, nice work.
How much do you think we’ll have to pay McCoy or Bradford? How much would we have had to pay Cassel? Your points are incredibly weak.
I’m thinking it very likely we would have given Jay the money. My point though was; Why didn’t he ask? Because our collective new management pissed him off so badly that money WASN’T the most important thing.

Please stop looking out for us McDumbfuck! (sarcasm for broncoholic)
Oh yeah, Pat How STUPID do u feel?
And Xanders? Aren’t you the GM in charge? Idiot!

    robtink242
I agree Tebow has a huge heart. He might even make it in the NFL but as you pointed out, not in our system.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

Oh, sorry for so many posts…
Good article East. I wonder at your no next round pick point of view though. Wouldn’t we likely be interested in one of next years qb’s or some of next years 1st round talent if matched with a non-premium 1st rounder this year? I think so.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

arg read “no next years pick”

  • http://n/a Sooner Dawg

For Cutler, Cleveland will not ante up this year’s 1st rounder (#5), Shaun Rogers, or both 2nd rounders w/ Quinn. Rumors are Quinn & pick #36. However, I see this as a 3-way trade w/ Detroit getting Cutler and Cleveland parlaying Quinn back into the #20 spot where Savage originally traded for him.

    Detroit gets Cutler
Cleveland gets #20 pick from Detroit & Tony Scheffler from DEN
    Denver gets …
    from CLE – Quinn & #36 pick
from DET #65 pick (1st pick in 3rd rd.)

  • Hansen

Tebow will make it to the NFL and maybe as a QB, but wont be any good. Heart yes, but poor throwing action. Good college QB, but not an NFL starting QB. I can even see him becoming a TE.

  • broncoNM

Hansen… Your right Tebow will SUCK in the NFL as a QB. A slow release and poor techniques+ the system he is in wont transfer in the pro’s. Great College QB but horrible in the Pro’s. Possibly TE but im no fan of Tebow.

  • RHINO

Cut, Shef, and Selvin Young for Cassel, Larry Johnson, and 2nd round. B Dawk and the gang can dropkick crybaby Cut twice a year and as a bonus maybe Shef can catch a pass out of bounds and knock our dumb ass coach out.

  • jcampb72

What about Jay and Tony for Quinn Rogers and their 2nd round?

  • utah bronco

In my opinion both sides have lied and continue to lie. Fox sports is reporting that Jay never wanted to be traded…http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9403016/Cutler-speaks:-'I-didn't-want-to-get-traded
Both sides seem to not want to tell the truth. McDaniels lied about trying to trade Cutler and now Cutler coming out saying he never wanted to be traded. Well if you didn’t want to be traded, then why request to be traded. This is like elementary drama and is a joke!!!

  • Nicole

    Guys,
Welcome to the wonderful world of failing to communicate! The ball was dropped and no one picked it up. Everyone had a stake in it and everyone should just go their separate ways. No more fanfare or flash! Just go-there’s been too much talking and not enough listening. Trade request or no trade request-they can’t co-exist. The honeymoon is over long before it could began. Cutler will move on to a team and develop new memories and friends-Josh can find his own qb. Tampa, Minnesota, or Chicago are prepared to welcome him! Their management is stronger and can handle what comes their way. In some kind of way, Denver is doing Cutler a favor. Go somewhere that will not create crazed drama (and even if they do, they’ll know how to handle it), learn the scheme, and get to winning. Sorry, I know alot of you want him to go to Detroit out of spite, but the other three have jumped to the front. At this point, it doesn’t matter anymore-all of the name calling and funny pictures are useless because it’s over. Regardless of who’s right or wrong EVERYONE LOST! Move on to the next venture Denver because this road has come to an end. Stop everything and just say GOOD-BYE.

  • roshon2411

Whomever said there was a market out there for Cutler and we have leverage are crazy. Look at this link…

Teams know how desperate the Broncs are now, I don’t see a deal on there worth it. Call me crazy, but I think this going to end up like ARod and the Yanks a few years back. ARod was supposedly unhappy as a Yank was going somewhere else, management told him to go and bam signed a big contract with the Yankees. Once Denver see there isn’t equal value. Both sides meet, a big contract is thrown on the table and that settles everything.

Or I could be wrong and Cutler gets traded to Detroit, fans in Denver love it. Cutler stuck with 0-16 Detroit, Broncos grab Sanchez in the first round. Detroit pulls a 08′ Dolphins turn around go 11-5 and Denver goes 5-11, McDaniels get fired, Bowlen brings back Dan Reeves. Ha, Yes i’m the first person to mention bringing Dan Reeves back.

  • roshon2411

Besides Denver isn’t going to trade Cutler to an AFC team. That will eliminate half the teams. There’s a reason Farve went from the Pack to the Jets, Montana from the 49ers to the Chiefs. Moon to the Vikings. You don’t want the chance that your old QB stops you from making or elminating you from the playoffs. Ask Mangenius, how that went.

  • Broncoholic

Whidbey Bronco: You claim my points are incredibly weak, while you seem to have missed my point altogether. You said, “My point though was; Why didn’t he ask? Because our collective new management pissed him off so badly that money WASN’T the most important thing.” Well my point was that he wanted out before the new management was even brought in. Before they pissed him off with trade talks that never materialized. My point, is that Cutler wanted out as soon as Shanny was fired. We’ll have to agree to disagree however, b/c you obviously lie the blame on McD while I feel the biggest reason that Cutler is not going to be a Bronco is Cutler. He chose to not resolve this. He chose to take it this far and to force a trade. I’m more upset with Cutler for this than I am with our FO, although McD & X have plenty to learn.

  • Broncoholic

roshon: Do you really think that Cutler by himself can turn the Lions around from 0-16 to 11-5? He’ll be going from arguably the best O line to the worst. From having multiple weapons to target to 1. From 11 sacks per year to 50-60. INT’s and temper tantrums thrown will undoubtably go up considerably do to the lack of protection (and his 18 picks were already too many). The D is in just as bad shape as the D he had with the Broncos. He took a much more talented Broncos team (compared to the Lions) to 8-8, yet he somehow is going to go 11-5 with the 2009 Lions?

I seriously hope he does get dealt to Detroit just so we can see how well your 11-5 prediction holds up. Sure the Dolphins proved major turnarounds are possible, but they brought in Parcells and made changes from top to bottom. Besides they were the exception, not the rule. The Lions will have to sell the farm in draft picks this year and possibly next to acquire Cutler. I think a 5 game improvement is a lot more realistic. If he does go to Detroit I have a feeling he will be pulling this same shit with them next off-season and demanding a trade. Maybe that’s all he can hope for, to be bounced from team to team until somebody is stupid enough to send him to a team that’s a QB away from being a contender, but teams usually aren’t that dumb. But hey, there’s nowhere to go but up when he’s holding out for the Lions.

  • J

ESPN reports that the Broncos want at least 2 1st rounders and that Cutler can be traded as soon as Friday.

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money: Link Ambassador

This is funny. I love other teams blogs…

“Surprised? He’s been holding his breath for how long now? Beyond Cutler stamping his feet for this trade, why would he know be surprised to learn that they are granting him his wish?

Oh, and so Cutler never got those texts? Well that explains everything then! As everyone and their mother were reporting that Cutler wasn’t responding to his phone … so the chances that someone would have told him the team was trying to get in touch with him … were what … 99 percent?

Exactly how stupid does he and his agent think the public is?”

I’m still hoping/wanting Jay to be the QB of the denver broncos. I’ve learned anything is possible. I believe if jay plays ball they won’t trade him. The broncos called his bluff now jay’s backpeddling faster than an NFL CB.

  • steve

i would take any single one of those trades, theyre all good. but, frankly, were not gonna get anything that good. They would never give us campbell and landry. the detroit one could work, and wed have a young good team to develop. i would go for that. imagine stafford, bmarsh, royal, with a good offensive coach and good young d.

robtink- where’d i hear which thing? the comment on the cleveland trade is just what i want to see happen, the part about holding him this year is just a brainstorm of mine. the part about the bucs comes from local radio here and talking to season tix holders i know (talk about a team with out a direction- and doing nothing with over 40 mil in cap room…), even the papers around here dont expect a bucs deal for cutler.

  • Anthony33

It appears more and more like Cutler and Cook are the one’s lying.
The similarites to Green Bay last year are just too similar.

Still not completely convinced of who is lying. I know the Broncos have made mistakes here, but I cannot think if a valid resaon they would lie about it for this long.

Again, I think all we want as fans at the end of this is the truth as to what really happened. Is the organization just that stupid or are we being duped by and agent and his “client”? Now I hear Cutler saying he never wanted it to come to this…didn’t he (or Cook) tell the Broncos to trade him about 2 weeks ago? What the hell?

Until we know, it’s very hard to move on. I cannot follow the Broncos any longer, as I said, if it was them doing all the lying. If it’s the Cutler team, move on.

  • Mike

First we fire Shanahan and now we are trading Cutler? What is going on. I think we should bench Cutler until he gives in, his ego is too big to sit on the bench for the whole season. If we trade Cutler i wont watch another Bronco game and will become a fan of which ever team hires Mike Shanahan.

  • Anthony33

This is Jay Cutler last night.

“I was surprised they decided to trade me this soon,” Cutler told FoxSports. “I didn’t want to get traded. That wasn’t me. They had been going back and forth saying things, wanting me to be their quarterback, and then they didn’t. I really didn’t want this. I love Denver. I really like my teammates. I didn’t want it to get this far.”

    I think it’s clear who’s lying.
    Let’s start with this:
FoxSports. “I didn’t want to get traded. That wasn’t me. They had been going back and forth saying things, wanting me to be their quarterback, and then they didn’t. I really didn’t want this”

Jay: You had your agent tell the Bronocs you wanted to be traded on March 16th????? You didn’t really want this…hummm?

Jay: “I love Denver. I really like my teammates. I didn’t want it to get this far.”
Okay: If you love Denver so much, why don’t you live here? If you really like your teammates, why have you abandoned them while they are all preparing for the season while you are one of the supposed “captains”?? If you didn’t want it to get this far why did you not not answer or return any calls from the Broncos this past week when McD openly stated he wanted to try and ‘right’ the relationship and talk with you one on one??? Even if you never got a call, you had to see that on ESPN, NFL netword and every other news station in the country last week. You knew that wanted to talk with you.

I think I know my answer as to who is lying.

  • roshon2411

Broncoholic, no I don’t think Cutler can turn the team around himself. Pennington didn’t turn the dolphins around himself. The dolphins had a change from top to bottom. So have the Lions. The Lions won’t have to sell the farm to get Cutler. It looks like they asking for two first rounds. The Broncos don’t want their first pick, that probably means they can get him with the 20th pick and and the 1st pick of the secound round. The Lions have added quality FA’s in Maurice Morris, P. Buchanon, Grady Jackson, Bryant Johnson. If they were to add Cutler, Jason Smith with the first pick. That team will be a lot better. I’m not saying they will be 11-5 but I wouldn’t be surprised. As Miami being the exception. What about the Falcons, Ravens from last year, the NFC south the past 4 years. In the NFL teams go from worst to first and vice-versa every year. But if Cutler gets traded to the Lions and depending on if the Broncos get anyone(QB) in return. My money is on the Lions having a better year.

  • Stav

Holy Shit – I just got to work and saw this load of bullshit. If they need me to, I’ll fly to Nashville, put Cutler in a UPS package and then ship him out asap. How full of shit is this guy? Talk about rubbing salt on a wound, does he realizes he’s lost the PR war, he looks two-faced. This guy had no intent of being a Bronco and no one should be naive enough to buy into this crap. Both sides are lying to an extent, but obviously the scales have just tipped dramatically to one side. If he loves Denver, the city, the organization, his teammates, wouldn’t he’d be at camp picking up his $100k? I know all of us would be there for that much dough. If $100k doesn’t get him into camp, someone’s whispering in his ear, “when they trade you to the new team with that shiny new extension, $100k will be pocket change.” Good job Bus, you’re really making fans of all teams warm up to the idea of having Cutler on their squad. No goddamn integrity in pro sports, nothing. 40 yrs ago, in all pro sports, these guys had to work regular jobs in the offseason, those guys appreciated their talent. My mother-in-law grew up in Brooklyn, NY as a little girl with the Brooklyn Dodgers basically in her living room. They worked in the offseason, hung out in Brooklyn, we’re part of the community. They appreciated everything they had and didn’t take anything for granted. This is a slap in the face of all pro athletes who had to suffer and strike for these brats to make millions. Good riddance, can we all agree on this now?

Hey guys, I just got this from a great source in Denver:

The Broncos (Pat Bolwen, And Xanders) gave this phone # to Jay Cutler agent (Bus Cook) to have Cutler call as soon as possible:

    # 202-452-7468

So what does this mean? IDK gonna go call it…

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    champ,

Brian Dawkins clearly stated that he came to Denver because he was impressed by Josh McDaniels.

“Just hearing Josh and how excited he was and how much they wanted me here. I was not just a want for them. They felt more like it was a necessity for me to be here. That’s something that every player wants to feel from an organization. ”

That is what Dawkins said at his press conference. I don’t think Jay Cutler is the one who sat in the meetings and got him to sign.

  • Stav

I don’t know how many of you have access to ESPN 1050AM Radio on the East Coast, but they just had Joe Theisman on regarding the Cutler situation and this is a basic summary of what he said:

    1. Cutler is flirting with a very thin line of following in the steps of T.O. aka locker room cancer

    2. For the teams that would possibly want Cutler, there is no situation in terms of receiver corps that he can go to where he’ll have as much talent as Marshall and Royal. M&R had a huge influence on Cutler’s stats so to act like Jay put these amazing numbers up on his own is ridiculous.

    3. As a QB, there is no excuse for 18 ints. By his second/third season a QB’s ball protection should be much better, and it is not, it only looks to stay at this pace

    4. For all the bs that’s gone on, management (HC/Ownership) have tried to work this out/speak with him and he’s made himself unavailable aka his decision making on the field and off are easily questionable

    5. The rumors of the trade to the Redskins, Theisman says its stupid and that he doubts it will happen or shouldn’t happen as Jason Campbell hasn’t had the chance to succeed, too much change in the offensive scheme (almost every year), and the o-line isn’t that good, so why would Cutler be able to do any better? He has to learn the offense, and play with a poor o-line, and a downgrade in receivers (although Moss is good and Randle-El is alright).

    6. Bowlen is setting a very bad precedent in basically giving into a player’s demands which could affect other players. For a player with three years on his contract, you make him play.

i don’t care what anyone thinks personally of Theisman, yes he’s somewhat of a jerk and a narcissist, but he’s a superbowl winning HOF QB, he knows what he’s talking about here.

Ok we’ll agree to disagree on who gets the blame. Certainly they ALL do to some extent. I’m getting the feeling with Jay’s latest comments that Bus has been in his ear saying “trust me, this is how we play the game”

Well props to Bowlen for at least showing some sack by saying the Broncos organization won’t be played with!

I’m off to KC for the weekend, my last flight from there I was lucky enough to sit next to our new special teams coordinator (who was still with the Chefs). He bought me a drink and completely impressed me with his football knowledge and candor. I look forward to this bright spot in our growth as a team.

Ok, my dumb comment for the day…

  • Stav

Whidbey – How are we asking too much for a 25yr old probowl QB? Two #1’s, a starting QB, or some additional picks. He’s a rare talent, but as we all see he has some flaws, not enough for teams to stay away, just look at TO.

  • jdkchem

kerry, I’ll give you credit for getting it hald right. The point is that Cutler is not the team and as Marino and Dilfer prove you do not have to have a great qb to win superbowls. If you have not figured that out then you are the last person who should be telling anyone they don’t know football.

  • broncoNM

Reports are that denver is asking for 2 first round picks but are not demanding a QB to be included in the deal. They also dont want Det 1st overall pick. I am not high on this upcoming class of QB’s. I would much rather have Quinn, Edwards or campbell over any QB we get in the mid first round or later. I am not sold or in love with any rookie QB’s and would much rather have a guy in there with some experience (even if it is only 2.5 starts like Quinn). Quinn has sat the bench and has had time to evaluate the speed/timing fo the NFL. Surely they are not just counting on Simms?? The guy has no spleen and could be one hit away from retirement. Ill admit that my QB knowledge for this year’s draft stops after stafford, sanchez, freeman… Anyone have any idea who denver would draft if the go after a QB?

    Truth and Rumors:

“Cutler apparently has some of those feelings, too. After a brief retreat to North Carolina, Cutler was back Wednesday night in his adopted hometown of Nashville, Tenn., where he was spotted sitting in the front row of an Ultimate Fighting Championship event that was televised on the SpikeTV channel. Among those who spotted the Broncos quarterback was a reporter for FoxSports.com. I didn’t want it to get this far.” Cutler’s comments indicated he had calmed considerably since formally issuing a trade request to the Broncos on March 16.”

broncoNM – I read that report as well but the part about not wanting Detroit’s first overall but instead their 20th doesn’t make sense. The first overall pick has major trade value and we could move down in the first round with that one and package other players and more draft picks. We don’t want your #1 we want your #20? Huh?

If we are able to trade Cutler it will be one of the biggest and most unusual trades in the history of the nfl. 25 yr-old pro bowl franchise qb’s do not get dealt. If this does happen, there will be very heavy compensation. Unless McDaniels and Xanders botch this one too.

Since we have all placed blame….. I blame this entire fiasco on Bowlen. He should have stepped in long ago. McDaniels and Xanders = Young and prone to mistakes as they are inexperienced and overly eager. all McD wants is a team first approach. Cutler = Talented whiney immature beeyotch. Very talented. Period. All he wants is a big contract.

Bowlen new this when he hired them and said he wanted to play a bigger role and then steps aside for the biggest circus to hit Denver since Barnum and Bailey.

One last note – The Kobe Bryant situation out here in So Cal was worse than this (not saying it was the same but it was similar). And that got fixed so until Jay is traded he is still our qb.

Here’s a video I found. I find it VERY interesting that in the video you hear 2 things:

Jay: I didn’t want to get traded. I love Denver.
Bus Cook: He doesn’t want to be a Bronco.

    um HELOOOOOOOOOOOOO?

There is way to much miss communication on a player-agent perspective here. How can no one else see this?
