Jay Cutler wants out

Jay Cutler wants out

News just in! Pat Bowlen is not happy with Jay Cutler. Sorry for the picture, it was just too hilarious not to put up, no matter what your opinion is. So now where will this vexed quarterback land? Well this is the NFL so there are a slew of theories. According to Yahoo Sports, nine teams are interested in Cutler.

Several league personnel sources confirmed to Yahoo! Sports that at least six teams are expected to be seriously involved in trade talks: the New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns. The Jacksonville Jaguars have also shown interest, while the Minnesota Vikings actually pulled the plug on trade negotiations for Cutler back in February.

That’s just eight teams right there, the article further reports that the Redskins are in the market for Cutler as well. Many of you will think, “they’re content because Jason Campbell is their passer.” The article explains, that Jim Zorn and Dan ‘Money Bags’ Synder went out to visit USC players Mark Sanchez and  Brian Cushing, but they were possibly more interested in Sanchez. Synder may stop at nothing to make Jay Cuter a skin, and there has been unofficial reports of Synder meeting with Mike Shanahan.  I don’t feel as this trade will be a viable option for Denver because they won’t want Jason Campbell. Denver must have a replacement quarterback unless they feel like Chris Simms can do the job.

Trade Scenarios

Keep in mind that all of these scenarios are just that. The accuracy or validity of this article cannot be verified because we are an unofficial Denver Broncos Blog and News Site. Therefore if this article provokes any feelings of malcontent you should just remember that it’s a blog and people are bouncing around ideas and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, except Kerry. Just kidding Kerry, you know we all love you, I even gave you a tag.

  • Jay Cutler for Brady Quinn, 1st-2nd rounder, or Shaun Rogers.

Anyone interested in a Brady Quinn? This trade would sent Cutler to Cleveland and Quinn to Denver along with put off defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. If Cleveland wants to hold on to the gargantuan that is Rogers then they will have to replace him with a draft pick as high as first rounder and as low as a second. Josh McDaniels cannot afford to accept a 2010 draft pick, the term ‘next season’ should not be in his vocabulary.

  • Jay Cutler for 1st and 20th overall in 2009 Draft.

This is a gutsy trade. The first overall pick and the 20th overall pick for Jay Cutler. From here Denver will wield 3 first rounders, this means they have the capability to draft Matt Stafford, Tyson Jackson, and a outside linebacker like Larry English or Aaron Maybin. That is just one of several possibilities. Take into account trading one or more of those first rounders and Denver could land B.J. Raji, Aaron Curry, or heck really anyone with those kind of picks. The two main problems with this reside in trusting a rookie quarterback, really just rookie players, and the kind of money it would take to sign multiple first round guys, especially if two are taken in the top 12.

  • Jay Cutler for Trent Edwards, 11th overall, and 2nd-4th rounder.
Jay Cutler & Tony Scheffler for Trent Edwards, Donte Whitner, or 1st-2nders.

If Denver sends Jay Cutler to upstate New York you should expect seeing Trent Edwards another player, or some draft picks en-route to the Mile High city. Many analysts deem Edwards as one of the most underrated passers in the league. This 25 year old is 6’4, 231 pounds, and plays mostly from the pocket like a New England style quarterback. Edwards has never had a dynamic receiver to throw to and just like Cutler is on a team with a porous defense. Also, Edwards’ left tackle “Pro-Bowler” Jason Peters gave up 11.5 sacks, the most in the NFL last season. With all that being said it’s still hard to say that Trent Edwards is the kind of guy you’d want as your guy replacing Jay Cutler. Josh McDaniels has had a lot experience up against Edwards so that could play into effect. Buffalo is in serious need of a tight end and a package deal of Cutler and Tony Scheffler could reel in some good draft picks or players such as Donte Whitner. Whitner is a great up and coming safety in this league.

  • Jay Cutler for Jason Campbell, 13th overall, plus a second and third rounder.
Jay Cutler for Jason Campbell and LaRon Landry.

It is no secret that Dan Synder loves to spend his money. Synder loves to make the Redskins the New York Yankees of the NFL. This trade would have to involve Cutler for Jampbell and many picks. I wrote previously that there has been some unconfirmed and unofficial reports (rumors is the real word) that Shanahan has had meetings with Synder and if it’s true they’re probably not talking about golf. This trade will be very hard for the Redskins to pull off, they will have somehow provide a good quarterback with draft picks, or LaRon Landry and draft picks. I just don’t see this happening, Landry is hands down one of the best safeties in the game and both Landry and Jampbell would be way too much for Washington to give up. I wouldn’t put it past good old ‘Money Bags’ Synder to do what he does best, spend a fortune on hyped up players who critics call overrated.

The wildcard in all of these trade scenarios is Chris Simms. If McDaniels feels like Simms can handle the starting job, then we will see a completely different kind of trade. That’s all I have for today. There are more teams to analyze but a man has got to get to work.

Now it’s time for you Bronco Nation. Where do you think Cutler will land? What are the prospects from other teams? It’s your turn to make the decision.

  • AtomicLeo

Some facts to keep in mind

    (1) No team wants to draft in the top 10 this year OR next. The next CBA will include a salary cap for rookies. It’s about the only thing the players and owners agree on, thus any team in the top 10 the next 2 seasons will be paying A LOT more than say a team with a top 10 pick in the 2012 or 2013 season. Denver can’t trade it away and its +30M for whoever they pick at #1.

    (2) Yes Cutler is cheap. THIS year. His base salary is 1M this year, HOWEVER he is due a roster bonus of 10M the following the 2009 season and another 12M roster bonus in 2010. Any team trading Cutler know this and also knows that if they don’t do a deal right after the trade they could get seriously screwed next year. A team has 3 options with these roster bonuses 1. Pay it 2. Negotiate a new deal with the player the spreads the money out or 3 Release the player. Because of the roster bonus money due Cutler look for a team that has the cap room this year to swing a deal and avoid the 22M time bomb in roster bonus Cutler is due in the next 24 months.

    (3) The Denver Bronco organization has been completely unhinged since Shanhan was fired. I don’t care what you think of Cutler or his reaction to the Cassel-Almost-Trade, the organization does not have a coherent plan for the future. It’s not clear who is in charge or what EXACTLY the plan is for next year. Organizations with this level of dysfunction do not win on the field. They do not attract top FA talent and they lose fans. Given how poorly nearly all the off-season signings (or non-signings) have been handled, I do not see how this same group of people that loaded up on OLD veteran talent in the FA period, then did a complete 180 and decided to get a new QB and thus starting the 2009 in rebuilding mode will suddenly become trade geniuses. That is a hope that is not based on the evidence of the past 3 months: Firing the Goodmans, getting rid of Leach, signing 3 RBs over the age of 30, discussing about trading Hillis, Torian or Young. Ok young sort of makes sense, but still!

I’m afraid we are looking at a very bad season next year and possibly another year or two after that. Oh and did I mention there will likely be a lockout in 2011? So we in Denver may not see decent football until 2012. Sigh.

  • robtink242

    Atomicleo AMEN!

this team has no sense of direction theres a rookie in control of the ship. And know wants to be held responsible for this mess up.

Trade McDaniels as an OC to Cincy for there 1 next season. OH he might trade Carson Palmer for Chris Simms. lol

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    AtomicLeo,

The Denver Broncos organization has been unhinged since Shanahan left? Are you imply it was on the hinge before hand? Denver was a few lucky wins away from 5-11. The team fell apart in the last few weeks like it does every year. That is being unhinged.

  • robtink242

OH personally the hinges began to loosen after Al Wilson left the building. I think everyone can agree to that Mr. East. We had allot of upside last year on offense but the defense was atrocious.

  • robtink242

Hey remember when we had that list of players that we thought for sure McDaniels would keep. yeah i remember Cutler being on top of all list. Cause we all thought it was a no brainer yeah this is why common sense isn’t so common.

    Wow DC-

I forgot the quotations because i was in a hurry. My bad.

  • DC

Its all good, just jerking your chain

  • robtink242
  • broncoNM

My top choices are the trades to Buff or Cle… Grab a decent QB get him in here to learn the system and grab some extra draft picks.

  • DC

right now it looks like we might be 5-11 this year. Wow, I wonder what D-hawk is thinking right now?

  • kraig

I dont know who to be pissed off at. This will kill the broncos for a while! Mcdaniels can kiss his job goodbuy after three years. What a shame!

  • hags

AtomicLeo, Thanks for a reality check to those who don’t get Denver! I still say FIRE THE COACH! Jay was outstanding considering our D. So any team that picks him up under any circumstances is in for a great ride. I will be watching.

  • hags

    PS…Keep Tony Romo in Texas….PLEASE!

  • champ2203

DC i hear ya. Also all the other free agents and new coaching staff must be like hey WTF he’s (Cutler) half the reason why we came here in the first place.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Last year everyone would have guessed that Atlanta would have been 5-11 at best. Don’t hate on your team until they can’t get a first down and let up a billion points.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    champ,

I don’t agree that players went to Denver for Cutler. As a matter of fact most of the free agents if not all came for Mike Nolan and Josh McDaniels.

  • flbronc

as i said, i like quinn and mutliple first rounders (or quinn rogers and next years first). we can get it.

here’s a wild thought… what if we tried to trade him and hold out on pulling the trigger unless we get compensated big. he’s under contract, and if dont trade him he’ll have to play or pull a plummer and retire. if he plays he will have to play well, or he wont have any value. trade him after next year into a spot where we can get mccoy or bradford- who imo are much better than stafford or sanchez. not sure thats realistic but, it’s a thought.

mikebirtry- dont expect the glazers to open their wallets on this one, they are spending all their efforts in your neck of the woods with man u. the bucs fans here in central florida are a bit fed up with how they are running their american football team… i dont see them getting the firepower together to land jay.

  • Kelly

I think if they can get simms playing well, they should keep Cutler on the bench Third string and let his stock drop like a rock. it sucks to get all excited about you team then find out guys wanna cry about every news article or report out there. wa wa wa to Cutler hope he ends up in going nowhere detroit.

  • DB

ohhh man i would LOVE to see Matt Ryan in a Bronco Uni. If the Falcons were interested i’d be all for it!…but back to reality, i would think Brady Quinn is our best bet. I’ve also heard Matt Leinart, i would like to see Denver bring in a young talented QB.

  • Kawike

    cleveland

  • BroncoPA

Cutler should have been the bigger man in this situation. Go to all of camp, mandatory or voluntary and prove to McDaniels that he is a way better QB then Cassel could ever be. This team was on the fringe of good things.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)
  • champ2203

Mr. East you know that for a fact huh? Almost an all unproven coaching staff. By that I mean two coaches that were fired and a head coach that has zero experience at being that. That’s who they came there for? Yea right. Let’s take a poll on here. Who actually thinks the majority of the free agents signed this off-season would have come if they knew Cutler would not be there and they would have an inexperienced QB or even worse a rookie. Actually most probably would have come here anyway because no one else would have signed of them. Who I’m really talking about are players like Dawkins. Not McDaniel’s 5million dollar long snapper and his other butt buddies he brought with him. Hey I heard New England’s water boy is a free agent and he’d be willing to sign for 3mil. Let’s hop on that genius.

  • hags

    Matt Leinart!? HMMM..that sounds interesting.

  • robtink242

flbronc where did you hear that from

  • robtink242

    cham2203 i kno dawkins wouldn’t be here

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

Two XXL jock straps and a bag of footballs to be named later.

  • merch22

traded to jets for jenkins with some pick, or quinn and 1st(but trade jay and tony)

of course Jay & our offense were a factor in some of the free agents choosing denver! And of course they’re pissed right now! Until this spring Denver’s front office was considered as one of the best… Now we look like shmucks.

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money: Link Ambassador
  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

btw has anybody looked at the User Poll lately? Twice as many of us blame Coach than Jay for this mess!
    Kerry, I’m still with you.

Winning cures everything… it’s the only thing that will cause me to love our new coach. It better be a LOT of winning to because we were already on the right track!!

Meanwhile… 1. force Jay to play or sit 2. Romo 3. Quinn Rogers Please not one of the Rookie QB’s or Cambell
    4. start Simms

  • Sabo

    Please God, no Romo.

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money: Link Ambassador

I think we would go with Detroit, then trade the number 1 for something like a 2 and a 3 or something this year and a pick next year, as well as the 20 this year, and maybe a player. This would give you quite the draft.

Romo is not the answer, neither is the the draft. Maybe Tim Tebow next year, but I’m still not sold.

Welcome to the worst football team in the world Jay. Hope you like your stay.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

romo would be a straight across trade. don’t believe all the bs folks say about his performance. He’s already broken MANY Cowboys records in ONLY his 3rd year and his pass protection SUCKS. (think about how badly he’s been sacked, hurt and hurried at the end of the last two seasons after teams figured out Dallas’s offense. He’d thrive here.

  • champ2203

    T-money good link.
I keep hearing all these Redskins rumors. Out of Quinn, Anderson, Trent Edwards and Campbell. Campbell is probably the worst choice. Why is he even on their radar? Welcome to dumbass decions part II starring Pat, Josh, and Brian.

    Watch the Rod Smith interview…

  • http://ttmt.com T-Money: Link Ambassador

    WhidbeyBronco-

But Dallas how shown absolutely 0% interest in releasing Romo or even Cutler for that matter.

  • Hansen

Oh please no, not Romo. Banish those thoughts from your cranium. And Leinart? No no no (and I am a USC homer).

  • Jordan C

I normally love this kind of stuff, but frankly, it’s starting to get frustrating. I realize that we’re probably a week, minimum, away from a deal, but I want this whole damn business to be over.

There are a few backup quarterbacks out there that were never really taught how to play the pro game because they were drafted by terrible teams. They have the skills, though. I’m thinking of David Carr, Alex Smith, among others that I don’t know. I might include Quinn in that, too. Maybe even Vince Young. No, that’s crazy. Didn’t he score a 2 on the Wonderlic?

That wouldn’t be the best option, but what is the best option now? I guess that that is what this post is about, but none of these options is the “best option”. In my mind, the best option is to sit Cutler’s ass on the bench all year. But that’s just me being pissed at him. That would be the absolute worse option for him. Trade him to Detroit in a year if you want.

I really think that Matt Cassel is not that good. I really think that McDaniels really is a very good QB coach. He’s already shown that he’s cocky as hell with the BS that he tried to pull. I really wouldn’t put it past him to trade for a package like Patrick Willis, Alex Smith, and the 10 pick.

Wouldn’t that be awkward in the locker room – Nolan and Alex Smith? And McDaniels, as Belicek’s apprentice, won’t give a damn.

Everyone would hate counting on Smith. But wouldn’t that be the story of the year, if the 2005 first overall pick makes his comeback in the wake of Cutler leaking.

All I’m saying is that it would be a great story. He could also fall flat on his face.

  • Jordan C

*leaving. Not leaking. Haha. Maybe he is leaking something.

  • Broncoholic

Kerry: You’re so pissed at McD for this, but did you ever consider that Cutler wanted out the second that Shanny got fired? It all makes sense if you consider that Shanny probably had a wink, wink deal with Cook & Cutler for a contract extension this off-season (this year is Cutler’s low year in his contract and he was expecting to get paid this year). As soon as YOU got your wish and Shanny was canned, Cutler’s new contract walked out the door with him.

McD, trying to build a contender, most likely told Cutler to play through his contract (or at least to play through this year of his contract) b/c they need to spend $ building the team, not giving Cutler a huge extension which could jeopardize what McD was trying to do, build a winner. I believe this was what truly cemented Cook & Cutler’s decision to force a trade.

The Cassell talks were a smokescreen for Cutler to hide behind while his real reason for wanting out was b/c of Shanny’s exit which meant his big payday’s exit. The way everything was leaked to the media (by Cook no doubt) the whole way instead of handled behind closed doors, along with how far Cutler has taken this indicates to me that this was about Shanny getting fired and Cutler’s contract extension vanishing into thin air. The “I’m pissed that they tried to trade me and then lied about it” was primarily BS to make the MSM and a lot of fans blame McD for his exit, and not lay the blame at Cutler’s feet where it belonged.

It didn’t matter who replaced Shanny or what moves McD made once he was hired, Cutler wanted out. Cutler knew he was headed out 1 way or another the very day that you were celebrating like hell…the day Shanny was shown the door. Cutler is the one who you should be pissed at. The owner has every right to replace his HC, however that doesn’t give the QB the right to demand a trade. If Cutler wanted to be here he would be here, end of story. Lay the blame where it belongs.

  • robtink242

i’m starting to think Cutler is just flexing his muscles yeah see how far they could get without me. And personally i don’t know if i could play for a coach that sells me a dream with me in the future and then trade my ass behind my back. Then lie to the fans about how much fun this new system is. I must say McDaniels has a twisted idea for fun.

Jordan C – you think Matt Cassel isn’t that good well it has to be some reason why this guy wasn’t starting. He’s not Brady at all it’s not like this guy had 3-4 season starting under his belt. he’s a back-up period

  • Anthony33

I just want to know who’s lying through their teeth on this this who contacted who over the past ten days. If it’s the Broncos, I’m done with them.

I saw an article where Cook says he and Cutler were only contacted once and that was through Xanders, which the Broncos denied. This just smells so similar to the Green Bay – Favre thing last year.

Favre and Cook create an impossible situation for Green Bay, but tell them Favre is going to report to camp, which would of course created havoc. Now you have Cook and Cutler refusing to man up a talk to anyone from the Broncos yet claim Cutler was all set to report to the next mini-camp, even shipped his car off. So he won’t talk to anyone to get this resolved, but we’ll show up to camp and create havoc.

Do you see the pattern here? If Bowlen had half a brain he would have called their bluff, force Cutler to show up to camp and deal with it or look like the spoiled, lying brat by not showing up. What would there have been to lose on the Broncos side?

Again, if it is the Broncos who are lying, and I certainly hope that is not the case, then they are getting what they deserve.

    Just tell me who’s lying.

  • robtink242

broncoholic what you’re could be true but he Cassel ordeal is real. i don’t kno about any of you guys but when shanny was let go i could of sworn that Steve Spag. had the job. It made to much sense i guess get a defensive HC to fix the 29th rank D. But no we get the offensive mind coach how also like offending players to fix the defense. yeah that works. Steve Spags. would of turn this team around. this team problems were to simple to fix.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

yeah, I’d really like to know who’s lying too. Bus at least. And why would Bowlen lie?

    Broncoholic
If Jay left for the money (which i wonder about too), why didn’t he just ask for it? (maybe he did?) Wouldn’t Bus have made a public request for a new contract? If only to let would-be trade suitors what they expect? It doesn’t make sense.

I still think Jay was already pissed about Shanny, then Bates… then our new weaselly Coach & GM. A guy only looking for a big pay-off, doesn’t eliminate his best option here at home does he? Remember we had/have the $$

Meanwhile… Romo. Unless they have Shanny billed as next years coach… No way they let him go even for Jay. I was just saying…

I like giving Simms a year and going for a QB next year.
Not (!) Tebow! Are you kidding?! He’s not even a fisrt round pick next year.

  • Broncoholic

The Cassell ordeal was real, no doubt. I absolutely believe that Cutler was offended at even the idea of it. I don’t however, believe that it would cause Cutler to demand a trade. Especially when you consider “someone close to the situation” (i.e., Cook), leaked info to the media from the very beginning. If Cutler didn;t want out before the Cassell talks went down, then it seems like they would have handled this issue like almost every other trade talks that don’t materialize issue is handled, behind closed doors and not through the media. The way it all played out through the MSM combined with how far Cutler has taken this (demanding a trade and refusing to answer the owner’s calls), when the Broncos were trying to mend the relationship throughout the entire situation, makes me strongly suspect that Cutler wanted out before the Cassell talks went down, and the Cassell talks was either the final straw, or a perfect excuse to get out. Either way, Cutler wanted out. Cutler abandoned the Broncos, his teammates, and all of us fans.

  • robtink242

WhidbeyBronco Tebow wouldn’t fit the system Maybe shanny’s system. look for Colt McCoy or Sam Bradford. Chicago is getting Percy Harvin they have to then they get Tebow.I don’t care what any of you guys say no QB in next years draft has a bigger competitive heart than Tim Tebow.

  • Broncoholic

WB: Great ?’s. But I see it like this: If I’m a brand new HC in this league, I need to have some success relatively quickly in order to not be shown the door. Also, my main goal is to build a SB contender. I just can’t see myself ponying up huge $ (even if we have the cap room, resources are always limited) to my QB who is in his 3 year of a 6 year deal that he signed. That very well may handicap the team that I am going to field which could be my downfall. McD being very green, had no way of knowing what Cook & Cutler would & did do if he refused their contract extension request. Cook might have even known that it would be a waste to even ask, b/c not only would they not get it, it would somewhat limit their options as far as going down the road they chose.

McD was only thinking of the best interest for the Broncos. Cutler was only thinking of the best interests for Cutler.

  • robtink242

you’re right broncoholic it sounds like he wanted out before. i wouldn’t take the phone calls neither. But at the seem time i would of handle it differently. Text messages is not the way. the first meeting with Pat, Josh, Brian, Cook & Cutler should of been face to face. put everything on the table then if Cutler didn’t admit he wanted out from then all of this would be on his shoulders not the broncos.
