All hell has officially broken loose. Pat Bowlen has officially released a statement saying that he will comply with Jay Cutler’s trade requets. The AP article states,

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen released a statement saying both he and McDaniels had been unable to get Cutler to call them back over the last 10 days. Bowlen said he spoke with Cutler’s agent, Bus Cook, on Tuesday and came away convinced “that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos.”

It’s a sad day indeed. Hopefully this is all just a bad April Fools joke. Where will Cutler land? Who will take over the reigns?

  • Mae

This is just a mess. I am a true BRONCOS fan but this has got to make you think. McDaniels screwed up. I do not blame Cutler or Shanahan. I love them both. I think the owner has had a brain freeze. When you are a key player you want to know that you are still going to be a key player. Cutler i will watch you play no matter what team you play for. And Shanahan you are still the best coach the NFL has ever had.

  • Stav

Has anyone ever scene Prizzi’s Honor? The scene where he tells Jack Nicholson, in that creepy old man voice, that he has to whack his girlfriend? “She’s gotta go”, well, we’ve got the pronoun right for Cutler, she’s gotta go. The unique thing in the Broncos favor is that while he is considered a “disgruntled player”, his talent level completely neutralizes that for a trade so there should be numerous good-great offers available for us. The one rule of thumb, do not trade within the division and preferably (but probably not so realistic) within the conference. One issue with the Quinn acquisition that I’m for and I know others like, Mangini just got done coaching Favre, and he hated it. Why the hell would he want the 25yr old version of Favre on the Browns? We have to figure a way out to get Quinn. I certainly don’t want them to get the #1 unless they have plans to either:

trade it down for multiple picks, a top 10 and one of the first four 2nd rounders + a third

pick Aaron Curry at #1, while finding a way to move up within the top 10 to pick a QB because I definitely like Sanchez.

No way the Broncos would pick Stafford at #1 and pay him all that cash when Curry is by far the closest thing to a can’t miss in the draft. Unfortunately the problem is that out of the top 10 picks, its the 1, 2 and 10 who could conceivably want the #1 for Stafford.

How about Cutler and Scheffler to the Rams for the #2, #35, and their #1 in 2010. But then that means Simms is our QB, ugh (we regress on offense anyway whoever comes in since Cutler’s gone, let’s just accept that now). You pick Curry with #2. You trade the #12 and our #48 to Jacksonville for the #8 and grab Sanchez. And you still have your 2nd round pick moved up 13 spots for another quality pick. Plus Cutler is on a shitty team and in the NFC!!!! Now I’m working magic, get me the Rams on the phone!!!!

Dee – all the Cutler pics at Dove Valley are of him coifing his hair on the sideline in that scumbag messy style, I’m sure they won’t miss seeing those.

    Mr East

I think a thread should be created discussing the future and moving away from Jay Cutler , we have spent alot of time on him already and think this is a good time to move forward.

Pat Bowlen is not the type of owner to come out publicly and discuss players, so he must be really fed up, I wonder what fans dont know about what really happened with Jay Cutler’s camp. I dont believe the “claim” that Jay Cutler was on his way to Denver… he has shown no indication since this started that he wanted to be apart of this team.

  • Stav

Easty, baby, I’m with you. You don’t want to play in Denver, well get the hell out!!! I like Brian Robiskie from OU. Looks like a sleeper to me at WR with SOLID character.

  • Stav

Dee – I’ve moved on, check out my GM skills above – I’ve got Cutler out of here for a slew of picks.

    (dee)

Don’t worry buddy I’m already working on it.

Good point about Pat Bowlen. He isn’t the type of owner who lives in the limelight, so this must be really getting on his nerves.

  • Kurt

Ya know, if I had acted like Culter in my job, I would have been fired a long time ago for behavior like that. He is truly not a professional. Well, except for maybe being a baby. He has skills but is not close to being the leader this team really needs. Trade his butt to Detroit and lets see how long he will last in the league.

  • http://www.broncotalk.net Hunter

Crybaby to the Rams for Bulger, the #2 pick in the draft and future 1 or #2. A good qb who finally has a o-line, draft BJ in the middle and a DE at 12. Crybaby goes to NFC and does not come back to haunt us!
Crybaby to Det and B. Marshall in a blockbuster. Dever get the #20, Det seond round pick and Calvin Johnson. Denver than trades the #20 pick and there own second to move up and get BJ in the top 10.

  • Roshon

Does someone actually think we’re going to pull an “Herschel Walker” esque trade? Forget about it, no leverage, will be lucking to get a second round pick now.
Here are the details of that trade:

    Minnesota Vikings Received:
    RB Herschel Walker
    Dallas’s 3rd round pick – 1990 (54) (Mike Jones)
    San Diego’s 5th round pick – 1990 (116) (Reggie Thornton)
    Dallas’s 10th round pick – 1990 (249) (Pat Newman)
    Dallas’s 3rd round pick – 1991 (68) (Jake Reed)

    Dallas Cowboys Received:
    LB Jesse Solomon
    LB David Howard
    CB Issiac Holt
RB Darrin Nelson (traded to San Diego after he refused to report to Dallas)
    DE Alex Stewart
Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1990 (21) They traded this pick along with pick (81) for pick (17) from Pittsburgh to draft (Emmitt Smith)
    Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1990 (47) (Alexander Wright)
Minnesota’s 6th round pick in 1990 (158) (traded to New Orleans, who drafted James Williams)
    Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1991 (conditional) – (11) (Pat Harlow)
    Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1991 (conditional) – (38) (Darryll Lewis)
    Minnesota’s 2nd round pick in 1992 (conditional) – (37) (Darren Woodson)
Minnesota’s 3rd round pick in 1992 (conditional) – (71) (traded to New England, who drafted Kevin Turner)
Minnesota’s 1st round pick in 1993 (conditional) – (13) (traded to Philadelphia Eagles, and then to the Houston Oilers, who drafted Brad Hopkins

There’s a reason it was the greatest trade ever. Because it will never happen again.

  • Stav

I don’t know about Bulger, he’s shell-shocked from all the hits he’s taken. 49, 37, 38 – that’s his sacks every year since 2006, and its safe to say you can add 20 to each of those to come near the total # of hits he’s taken. BUT he would be the staring QB then. The problem, he’s not the QB of the future for us. If we can’t get back youth at QB, then we might as well draft a QB with all the picks we’d see back. In the end, if we can’t get Quinn, there’s really no one else we can trade for to fill in as the potential future of our QB position and I know I’m putting a lot of stock in Quinn but he does have some talent and is familiar with system. If that’s the case where we can;t get him or something comparable (which is not out there), we just need to get as many picks as possible, which means a #1 this year in the top 10, a top 5 in the 2nd round this year, and either a 2010 #1 or another 2nd rndr from the 1st 10.

  • buckeyebronc

Be careful in asking for Brady Quinn. There is a reason he fell in the draft.
He couldn’t beat out Charlie Frye or Derek Anderson.
The Browns signed Anderson to a huge contract.
He couldn’t beat Anderson out for the starting job again last year.
New coach comes in and opens the QB spot up for competition and is willing to trade their former 1st rounder.

All signs to what everyone thought except for Notre Dame homers, Quinn is overrated with a weak arm. Unless you want the second coming of Brian Griese, I would stay away.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    Roshon,

I agree with you, there is no way there will be another trade like that ever again. I was just being a little facetious. There is more leverage than you realize though. Denver has a contract with Jay and that’s all the leverage you need. Other teams are drooling over this prospect. The leverage is all in the low QB supply in the draft and free agency. There is usually some QB that’s a highly regarded draft prospect or free agent signing and there isn’t this year. Denver needs to come away with their pockets full.

  • Hansen

    Diehard (#119) 100% agree. Stav (#144) 100% agree – Well said Gents.
I am absolutely salivating over the results of this trade and the potential draft picks! But then I have a problem with drooling anyway.
This is going to be fun. Enough of the soap opera – BRING ON THE DRAFT!

  • Stav

I still like the guy, put your point has merit, that’s why I think we should be looking at getting the Rams #2 (Curry), #35 (up 13 spots from our previous #48), and their #1 in 2010 for Cutler and Scheffler and trading our #12 + #48 to move up into the top ten and grab Sanchez. Personally, I like Sanchez over Stafford, but again, we all need to realize that we are taking a step backwards on offense as we can’t replace Cutler 100%, its just not possible unless another ProBowler steps in for him which is why we go for Sanchez now, as we are going to have to pick a QB. He ran the pro set out of USC, and we can easily grab him if we can move up to #6-#9 spots. If McD wants his own guy, then start fresh and grab Sanchez, just accept the fact that we’ll be 7-9 this year, maybe 6-10, all that would do is give us a top 10 pick in 2010 with possibly the Rams top 10 also for 2010. This is how you build teams guys, through the draft. Pull the trigger, get the picks, and the 2009 + 2010 seasons will be rough, but we’ll be developing some high round talent.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    buckeye,

Quinn is on the Browns. It’s almost like saying he’s on the Lions. This is a team full of mismanagement. Quinn played very well in his first 4 starts, better than Derek Anderson had played all year. I understand where you’re coming from but there just isn’t much else out there. Quinn is an intelligent quarterback and thats the kind of guy McDaniels looks for. Watch out for a Trent Edwards possibility too, he’s also a New England style QB. Edwards is highly underrated.

  • Stav

Hansen – Its like taking a huge shit, the relief and joy afterwards were well worth wait, in this case we need to “pinch” Cutler out to feel normal again. Agents, GMs, NFL execs are all saying we’ll clean up in this. Let’s do it, I’m pumped for the draft. There’s no reason why we won’t have 2 #1’s in the first 12 picks and one in 2010 + a decent 2nd round pick this year and in 2010.

Sorry for the gross metaphor, but as it turned out Cutler has become a huge shithead.

  • Rob Bronco

    “The only constant is change.”

Four years ago the team’s starting Quarterback was Jake Plummer. He was eradic and incosistent, but he won games. The only problem was, you couldn’t rely on him when you needed him most.

Then we draft Jay Cutler (which almost no one predicted), and we pin our hopes on him to take us to the promise land. In the three years that Jay has started, the Broncos don’t have a winning record. Granted, our defense was absolutely awful, but so was our offense at times.

Great quarterbacks are field generals. They find ways to win. They are dangerous when they have the ball with less than two minutes left in the game. They scare opposing defenses. FYI – we didn’t have that. Not at all.

I used to love it when the Broncos were in the spotlight. But not like this. Remember how much of a joke the Chargers used to be? Every time they were on television, it was like watching the NFL version of Jerry Springer. Now they are a superbowl contender every year.

We have a new coach. Shanahan isn’t coming back. It’s time to move forward, choose a new general to lead our blue and orange, and bring pride back to Bronco Nation. Let’s get out of the spotlight and back on the field where the Broncos belong.

  • flbronc

quinn sliding in the draft had less to do with talent than circumstance…. most teams either had a franchise qb on their roster or had spent high draft choices in the prior two years on qb’s… minnesota needed a qb but adrian peterson was miraculously on the board so they took him… miami’s ginn pick fooled everyone but after that nobody needed a qb until cleveland traded back into the first at 22…

now, he looked pretty good in a couple of his outings but it is true he never ‘won’ the starters job but i still think that he’s worth a shot. would i trade for him straight up? no way. we’d need their first rounder plus some extra picks, like next years first. i’d even settle for quinn, 09 first and second and 2010 second and third. basically the logic is we’re getting five players out of this, and if quinn doesnt work out we’ll be high in the draft and have some extra ammo to move up next year and get someone to fit mcd better.

  • buckeyebronc

    Flbronc,

True he did fall in the draft because a lot of teams didn’t need a QB. But now a lot of teams need a QB. Since Mangini took over and everyone in Ohio knows he’s available for a trade and there are no takers. Cheifs didn’t even think about him, went with Cassel. 49ers resigning Alex Smith. Vikings picking up Sage Rosenfels. Chicago sticking with Kyle Orton. Detroit sticking with Daunte Culpepper. Tampa Bay Luke McCown. Jets Kellen Clemens. All these teams want Cutler but none of them try to trade for Quinn. Quinn’s a bust, he might be intelligent but so was Joey Harrington.

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

Right of the current NFL QBs, I’ve been through and marked them as ones that are – in my opinion – available and ones that could be at the right price. I have a list of about 35 who could possibles, I have removed all the QBs that I have never heard of which is normally a good way of judging if they could be starters (Although I would have removed Matt Cassel this time last year!). There aren’t many highlights on there.

Quinn, Anderson, Edwards, Campbell, Jackson, Garrard, Garcia, Orton and Leftwich are about the best you can get. I’m not proposing how they end up in Denver but there are options.

But here is a scenario for you. If the Shannahan’s Broncos lost a running back – would you expect them to draft high or find someone who fits the system on day 2? I can see McD taking a chance on a pretty unknown QB on day 2 of the draft with the option of bringing in a veteran – just in case. All this talk of taking high profile top of the draft QBs just doesn’t look right in the “Patriot Way”.

  • kerry

im even less excited about the draft. dont anybody ever say again what a great owner Pat Bowlen is!!! Bowlen just needs to step down from ownership. he is way too much of a drunk vagrant moron to be an owner. and MCDickwad is the biggest moron in football. and anyone who is glad to see Cutler gone, doesnt know shit about football. QB’s of his caliber dont fucking magically grow on trees. IDIOTS!!

Mr Slave needs to come along and jump on McDickface’s head like he did Paris Hilton. right Mr East?

  • NathanH

Mike B, in regards to us taking a QB on the 2nd day. I’m really intrigued by Rhett Bomar who should go anywhere from late 3 to early 5. He woulda been a first rounder if he stayed at OK imo, and he would have been Sam Bradford this year. Obviously a different skill set, but the kid has an arm and I think he has a lot of potential at the next level.

  • Tom “The Troblemaker” M

The team made him the player he is, he didn’t do it himself and there is always someone who can replace you.
Good luck Cutler and leave the door open while you leave.
Any real Quarterbacks out there who want to play some real football?

  • roshon2411

So do you think when McDaniels went in for his interview, he said “My plan for your team is to blow up the offense, trade your starting quarterback for backup QB, because I’m that good. Then i’m going to sign all the defensive free agents available over the age of 30. Sign every third string running back I can find and change the blocking scheme because it wasn’t really working. And once I give a backup QB and long snapper huge contracts will definitely win a Super Bowl” and i’m sure during the last statment he had his fingers crossed.

Went from having “the rat” as a coach, to “the weasel”.

  • Kurt

Elway’s karma finally bites us in the ass.

  • Stav

Kerry – I think you’re missing the point. No one can be actually glad to see Cutler leaving. We’re taking a HUGE step back with this, but quite obviously the guy doesn’t want to be in Denver anymore and is going to make a stink about it. If he doesn’t to be there why should we put up with his BS? If he really wanted to be a Bronco, he’d put this shit aside and work through this, but he hasn’t chosen to. He talks through his agent, makes no effort to create a basic working relationship. No one’s telling him to get a McD tattoo on his arm inside a heart, just to make an effort to put the team first. Has he done that, put the team first? I think you know the answer to that.

  • Roy

Kerry, you are right, QB’s of his caliber don’t grow on tree’s. Neither do crybabies who can’t take a piss without their agent holding their dick. It just so happens we are getting rid of both in one fell swoop.

I am going to miss his abilities, but not his immaturity.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    Kerry,

I feel like from now on we should just make South Park references in all of our posts to each other. This way even if we don’t agree with each other we get to laugh.

McDaniels did shake the tree a little too hard and now he’s yelling timber. However, Cutler was on the other side with an axe named Bus Cook in his hand. I’m appaulled by Cutler’s leadership abilities, and I believe that a quarterback needs to be more of a man than Jay Cutler ever has been.

Rob Bronco’s post sums up what I think perfectly.

Kerry I would rather use the entity than have to listen to this Jay Cutler drama.

  • jcampb72

Why does everyone think he’s immature, bc he got pissed off his new coach wanted/wants to trade him? I seem to remember a QB in denver not too long ago that didn’t want to play for baltimore when he was drafted. He turned out ok. Eli did the same thing. Ask anyone on that team last year and they would tell you he was a leader. The scruff was between him and the coach, not his leadership or immaturity. Damn straight none of us would of questioned any of that until mcdoof made a rookie error or bellicheat leaked. Well that seems like an eternity ago now, sorry for the last minute rant.

  • kerry

go to http://www.Rotoworld.com and read about Cutler’s intention to show up to minicamp. he had packed up his car, shipped it to Denver with the intention of being at the minicamp on the 17th. so obviously Cutler was gonna show. but like most of you, Bowlen got impatient and wants him gone because he didnt respond fast enough.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

His name isn’t McDicknals or McDickwad …. its Mcdaniels … better be careful Kerry or he’ll trade you away to be a fan of another team. lol

Cuntler, excuse me Cutler is gone, and I believe we will be better in the LONG RUN for it simply because he didnt want to be here, and McD is not getting fired. As I said yesterday Mcdaniels now has to deliver a superbowl to denver to justify this move and I believe in time we’ll be able to achieve those levels.

The bottom line is all fans want is for their team to WIN football games, and I have more faith in McD than I do of Cutler in getting that done. Cutler is a above average QB , but does not have the mental makeup for the position … he’s gone off on the media, his teammates, the owner, and his coaches … and taken 0 responsibility for any of it. There is a reason players on the Jets dont want him.

Last point, Phillip Rivers is a prick and a loudmouth to the opposing team, but his teammates love him. They had a terrible offense this year and he made no excuses or threw anyone under the bus like Cutler did. I dont understand where Cutler gets his sense of entitlement from, but I’d rather have a guy that plays hard and can take being yelled at like man , rather than a child you needs to be pampered.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    * I meant defense , not offense

  • jcampb72

Leadership abilities? East, this has nothing to do with leadership abilities. It has to do with being wanted or not. You think any pro bowl caliber QB, anyone of them at 25, which there hasn’t been many, would be hunky doory with this situation. I really don’t think so. Sad to say but shanny coddled this kid to death now he wants to be treated the same way. Some people like the challenge to want to show people up and some need positive reinforcement. He needed the latter.

  • Colorancher

What a baby. If one of my employees didn’t answer my calls or didn’t show up for work they would be fired!!!! Keep Cutler and make watch Simms from the bench. If I was Cutler’s dad I would knock some sence into him. Tell him to become a man……

  • roshon2411

    jcampb72

I completely agree with you. We didn’t here about Cutler wanting be traded until McDaniels made the bonehead move to go after Cassel. It from this yahoo article, sound like a deal was done with Minnesota but Minnesota balked. If thats true, then McDaniels hasn’t been honest to Cutler or us fans.

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cr-cutlertrade033109&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    jcampb,

You’re definitely right about the Shanahan statement. My point is that a real leader wouldn’t let this get to him. A leader wouldn’t forfeit $100,000 in bonus money just to lift some weights. If Jay really didn’t need that money than he could just show up to practice and donate it charity. That may not be a lot of money in his head, but rest assured ask Mike Vick and he’ll let you know.

As a professional football player being paid millions of dollars should be positive reinforcement enough. McDaniels no doubt messed up on this whether or not he intended on trading for Cassel, but Cutler is still getting paid as an employee and he needed to act like it. It’s pathetic to pay someone that much money to act like that.

  • buckeyebronc

Can Bus Cook coach? He’s about the only one actually doing his job.

  • Let plummerplay

For the last time. I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!!!

Cutler is a frat boy punk with zero deep ball touch. He is a loser (at winning football games). We came within one game of super bowl 40 and went the wrong direction. I am so pumped up thinking about who we could get for him. Please remember that it is all about o line and d line.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

Sources close to the situation say Cutler cried himself to sleep last night, however was then comforted by Bus Cook who brought him some warm milk …

Meanwhile McD is developing his strategy to begin the Denver Bronco Dynasty moving forward …

Everyone needs to move forward , its a new day … I want the trade to happen right now so we can meet/greet our new players … Jay Cutler is soo March 31, lets have some QB debate …. so we draft ? or go with Brady Quinn …. I dont know about the Redskin’s QB … he seems like hes ok but I havent seen anything really special out of him. Brady Quinn has looked decent in his games as a starter.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

To a certain extent, you have to coddle these millionaire children. They’ve had everything handed to them on a plate since they showed even a hint of ability and pretty much assume that the world revolves around them.

You would hope that being able to make millions of dollars playing a game would be motivation enough, but unfurtunately it isn’t.

That’s the reality. And it’s not just Cutler, it’s most professional athletes.

  • jcampb72

Agreed, it may be pathetic but he holds the ball in his court. There are about 5 people in world right now that can throw the football like cutler. Hes a product of his environment. And his environment taught him to be a premaddonna who doesn’t neccessarily need or care about 100k, but he should have had someone like you telling him to donate that kind of money. Pathetic, though, is how McD’s handled this thing. He sent us back 2-3 years. He was a young cat, can you imagine being a superstar QB at 25 with that kind of money and resposibility. I must be nice, but really difficult at the same time.

  • http://mrherculesrockefeller.blogspot.com hercules rockefeller

The same way studios, directors, etc. coddle movie stars. You have to keep the talent happy.

  • Corey

I’m sick of people calling Cutler a baby, and making this his fault. I agree he should have taken the high road sooner but when you’re the franchise QB and your new coach comes in, tries to trade you, then lies about it to you and doesn’t talk to you about it… McD YOU SUCK!!! This is the worst thing I’ve ever witnessed as a Bronco fan, which I say I’m leaning towards a new team. ABSOLUTE DISASTER. FUCK YOU McD! Cutler was our answer on offense. Matt Cassell BLOWS!!!

I don’t think we will get quinn. There’s been no interest to trade for him on the browns part. I’ve also heard Carolina…interesting thought.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    jcampb,

I agree that McDaniels dropped the ball, but I’m not ready to say if he set Denver back 2-3 years yet. Give me a few real games to gauge his performance. Don’t write me off as an eternal optimist though, I’m getting a prescription of Xanax for this season (figuratively). In my opinion I’m all down for calling this season a mulligan if things go to hell in a hand basket and moving forward from then on.

I believe McDaniels is a good football coach and his experience with managing players is limited to respectful mature ones like Tom Brady, hell he even had a happy Randy Moss, thats not fair.

Apparently McDaniels is a take no crap kind of guy, which I like, but possibly not to this degree. Cutler and McDaniels should have communicated and found a middle ground. The fact that they never had a one-one-one is very sad, and I think there’s something that happened that we may never find out. That’s really the gist of this situation, we’ll never really find out.

  • jcampb72
