According to NFL.com the ‘Lions are open to trading (their) top pick.’ When specifically asked about Jay Cutler, general manager Martin Mayhew did not shy away from the prospect.

“We’re open to all options with that pick,” Mayhew said during a break at the NFL Annual Meeting. “Obviously, it has value to us, and if it has value to somebody else, then we can talk about that.”

The article also states that there are ‘speculations’ that the Lions are interested in Baylor’s offensive tackle Jason Smith.

If Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels is serious about his commitment to keeping quarterback Jay Cutler then the Lions will have to look elsewhere. However, the commitment also needs to be a two way road between the coach and passer.

I’m going to throw a curve ball here . . . . stay with me until I’m done . . . I want nothing more than Cutler to stay with the Bronco’s . . . but let’s hypothetically say that it is not going to happen . . . .

Rationale: . . . Jay asked to be traded . . . it has been a hundred years since Jay has responded . . . . he is not working out with his team-mates in off-season . . . he is not learning the new offensive system . . . he does not answer Pat Bowlen’s phone calls . . .

Now if you did not answer your boss’s phone calls . . . maybe your boss would call you an “unhappy camper.” . . . . or maybe he’d trade you . . .

McD has put on the three-ring-circus for the media with the jersey and all but he is not feeling the love . . . no kidding . . .

You want this settled before the draft. Period. if you’re going to trade Jay . . . there is only one team to trade him to . . . and you don’t need his permission . . . that is Detroit. .

    Rationale: . . . Detroit has the 1st, and 20th in the first round . . . and the 1st (33) in the second round . . .

The Bronco’s trade Cutler, Scheffler, and Stokley to the Lions for the 1st, 20th and 33rd . . . now the Lion’s offense has just improved 200%. . . Bus Cook is thrilled and he will convince Jay that he is thrilled also . . . they will turn around an 0-16 team to a contender . . . Miami did it last year . . . an abstract plus is that Jay is in the NFC . . .

    That gives the Bronco’s the 1st, 12th, 20th, and 33rd draft picks . . . I’ll bet you’re starting to salivate now . . . but it get’s better . . .

You offer the Ram’s Ryan Harris at tackle and the 12th and 20th draft pick, two first rounders, for their number 2 draft pick . . . .

    Now the Bronco’s have the 1st, 2nd, and 33rd pick . . .

To answer the obvious . . . I’d give the ball to Chris Simms . . . I know he’s not Cutler . . . but he’s with his teammates in offseason . . . he’s learning the new offense . . . he wants to be the first father and son to win a superbowl . . . need any more motivation? . . . he could be the plug-and-play QB that McD wants and he is already there . . . with a ton of offensive weapons . . .

    Who would you pick? . . . . Ragi? . . Orakpo? . . . Jackson? . . . Curry? . . . you really could build our defense for the future . . .

Obviously the Bronco’s could throw the whole draft into another realm of reality . . . .

What do you think? . . . I’ll paste this onto the other blogs to get some reaction . . . no hippy lettuce or left-handed smokes here . . . just Fat Tire and Hornitos . . . T

Tom: We would be giving way too much $ to rookies in your scenario. The #1 pick gets $30M in guaranteed $. The #2 gets close to that as well. We would be giving up Cutler, Scheff, Stokely, and R Harris just so we can pony up $60M in guaranteed money to 2 rookies who have never played a snap? We lose our star QB, starting RT, #1 TE, and #3 WR for 3 overpaid rookies (#1, #2, & #33)? No way does this make any sense.

How about we keep all of these players and use our 9 draft picks to help solidify our D, maybe a couple of later round Offensive pickups. Detroit would love someone to step in and take that #1 pick b/c no one in this years draft class is worth $30M. The top picks get way too much money. Haynesworth signed the biggest FA contract this off season and he got $40M in guaranteed $. The #1 pick gets $30M and hasn’t proven himself a bit. There’s a reason no team wants that #1 pick.

Yeah the money for unproven talent…! I like the unknown talent coming out early in the ‘trade down’ rounds. And the ones worried about the future rookie cap. There will be some steals this year for smart teams.
Pretty tired of waiting on Jay though. Simms is feeling better and better to me.

    whidbeybronco:

relax about cutler. be patient. he has already said he wont show up until the mandatory report date of April 17th. and its already been reported that he has responded and is willing to meet with McDaniels one on one. its closer to a resolution between those two then a trade now.

  • Tom9798

Broncoholic . . . . I do not want to see Cutler leave . . . the hypothetical scenario I proposed in blog #51 was the most Defense oriented – draft rich one I could imagine . . .

slanted that way because I miss the Orange Crush defense . . . the one where it was unacceptable for any team to score more than 17 points . . . the one with attitude . . .

I was at Mile High stadium the day that Dennis Smith ran full speed for 20 yds. And hit Kansas City running back Christian Okoye at the line so hard that they heard the hit at Elitch’s . . . the whole stadium said, “ooooohhhh” at the same time . . .

I miss that bell-ringing “just try it” attitude . . . and I still get sick to my stomach when I think about the 52 points S.D. painted on us to go to the playoffs with an 8-8 record.

Like I said . . . I do not want Cutler to leave . . . and if there truly is no scenario that makes sense . . . there seems to be only one logical answer to have Cutler back in the sandbox playing with the other kids . . . Pay him the money now! . . . 10 years . . . 130 million . . . no trade clause . . . the career deal . . .

This is what he is waiting for . . .

Telling Jay “you’re just like everybody else and can be traded at anytime,” . . . is not my idea of pouring some sugar on the situation . . . obviously . . . he is not like everybody else . . . or any combination of draft picks . . . or any trade combo to another team . . .

Time for Pat Bowlen to “man up” and make the camper happy . . . . then go watch some film of when we had a real Defense and go do something about it . . .

  • bronco40

alright now we all heard last year about how mcdaniels turned cassel into a starter so i say we just trade cutler to detroit for their first round pick then we draft matthew stafford and if he sucks we always got chris simms

  • stav

I think you meant to say Steve Atwater. It was Atwater’s famous Okoye hit that broke the myth of the “Nigerian Nightmare”. I still remember seeing that on TV years ago and screaming about it to my middle school friends. Back to the picks, that many first rounders is impossible to sign. The problem with the #1 pick is that you set the market and have to work off the scale. You certainly couldn’t afford to sign the 1 & 2 + the 20. And you certainly don’t trade Ryan Harris, he’s a future ProBowler. But let’s say they have to trade Cutler in the end, I agree, send him to Detroit but I would not want Stafford. Pick Curry at #1 and you have your MLB for the next 10 years. You take the #12 and shop it to move down (save some cash) to the 20’s. In the end you have the #1, #20, #23 – #27 (somewhere between), #33, and the #48. that’s potentially 3-5 starters. I can get behind a scenario like that if the “fiasco” can’t be resolved, but the solution of course is:

Pay Cutler. That’s the only way to get this fixed. You’d love to think that management can go in and say to him: “Work with us to make this situation better. Come into camp, have a big 2009, ProBowl, or even better, get us into the playoffs. When that happens, we’ll tear up your contract and give you the big money.” Wishful thinking, but as long as contracts aren’t guaranteed in the NFL, then you have to side with the players slightly when it comes to money. Everytime they hit the field there’s a chance for injury whether minor or major as in permanent. These guys can be cut by management at any time and this is a QB’s league so let’s cut the BS and get the new contract done.

  • Tom9798

    Stav . . . Thanks . . . Anthony33 corrected me in another blog . . . guess I age myself with that one . . .

Great comments on the scenario I proposed . . . the underlying idea behind the whole thing is that I don’t want to see Curry or Orapko on the Kansas City Chiefs . . . especially Orapko . . .

so if I could devise any plan to get them and Raji on our team . . . it might seem like I’m selling the farm now . . . but in five years we would look back and think what a great idea that was! . . . T

I want Jay Cutler to stay a bronco as the next guy but if he doesnt want to be a bronco like he says hes not going to be! Josh mcdanials isnt gonna be fired this season. I would rather have mathew stafford over a brady quinn whos shown he cant do shit in this league. Jay Cutlers shown it but if we cant get him than youve got to trade him to detroit. Josh has made matt cassel a backup since high school good then he can make Jay Cutler or Mathew Stafford Great.

Sensei Choade (kerry) – you really like McDaniels? Why?

  • Old Denver Fan

    Whidbeybronco:

“Relax about Cutler…” says Sensei Choade (kerry) in # 55 above. Boy, he really knows his stuff, huh? I hope you didn’t lay down any cash on Cutler staying based on his attempt at football knowledge.

Jay will be gone for sure now, and the sad state of Denver completely rebuilding it’s football operations is before us. Patty B. only has himself to blame for this dibacle. However as long as dunderheads like Sensei Choade blindly lap up whatever spunk Patty B. spews his way, it’ll all be just swell. Meanwhile, the fans pay the price.
