CBS4 in Denver has reported that Jay Cutler is no longer in Denver after meeting face-to-face with his agent and Broncos officials.

Cutler will not be attending Monday’s voluntary team workout. Sources tell CBS4 he has told the Broncos to trade him.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Cutler stated:

“At the end of the meeting, [Josh McDaniels] wasn’t like, ‘Jay, I want you as our quarterback, you’re our guy.’ It felt like the opposite. He basically said that I needed to tell him if we can’t work this out, to let him know,” Cutler added. “I thought he was antagonizing me and that was disappointing because I was ready to move on, committed as a Bronco. Really, I figured we’d hash things out, shake hands, laugh a little and move forward. What happened [Saturday] was the last thing I expected. If I didn’t think it could be fixed, I never would have come back to Denver. It was painfully obvious to me and Bus [Cook, his agent] it’s not something they want to fix.”

McDaniels offers this translation:

“Again, I think that’s been a pattern. I couldn’t get [Cutler] to talk to me for two weeks or to talk to Mr. Bowlen. Then when he came here this weekend, we couldn’t get a one-on-one meeting, just me and him alone. He wanted Bus in there, so I had Brian sit in, too. And it was the four of us. There wasn’t any yelling, none of that. I can’t believe we get to a totally different [interpretation].

“It’s an unfortunate set of circumstances that has cropped up, a potential distraction and we’ve done our best to limit that. The main message I want to get out is that we’re excited to start our offseason program [Monday]. It’s an exciting time for us.”

It only gets deeper and deeper,

“I certainly went back there, expecting I’d be there [Monday] but not now,” Cutler said. “It’s not mandatory. I’ll attend every mandatory mini-camp and training camp but that’s it. Really, it’s best for me to move on. As coach said, he needs every eye in the meeting room to be on him and not me.”

Cutler said: “You know, even after the meeting, I hung around town, kind of expecting him to call me and say, ‘Hey, let’s just me and you get away and have lunch or a cup of coffee’ and mend things, but that didn’t happen. So, I get it, really, it’s a business. I’m disappointed beause [sic] I love being a Bronco but I think it’s run its course.”

This comes after a weekend when it was exposed that both Culter’s home and his parents were placed on the market for sale. As the situation develops we will be sure to keep you up-to-date.

“Nothing more than a coincidence. I had already shown my house privately to some interested buyers a couple of months ago,” Cutler said. “I’ve really been looking to buy 40 to 70 acres of land there.”

Cutler goes on to state that McDaniel’s told him that he had basically come to Denver to coach Cutler. Then Matt Cassel happened. Cutler stopped calling and wouldn’t return calls to Broncos owner Pat Bowlen.

“Josh and I have exchanged text messages. We had a conference call. And if Pat wanted to speak to me, why didn’t he come to the meeting on Saturday?”

Cutler’s agent Bus Cook magically appeared in the interview, when most agents may have chose to abstain. He states that as an agent he was “totally in shock” that it has gotten so ugly.

“I would have bet my house going into Saturday’s meeting that everyone would be shaking hands and smiling,” Cook said. “I thought it was going to get worked out. But it was very clear to me that Jay Cutler is not their choice to be quarterback of that team.”

However, Yoko Ono did admit that when he called Broncos General Manager Brian Xanders to request a trade on Saturday night, Xanders said it wasn’t going to happen and that “Jay should show up Monday.”

Denver has two options, they can trade him or sit on him. If Cutler misses off-season workouts, it’s only a little monetary loss to him. He says that he will make every mandatory camp. If he were to take this thing all the way to training camp he would begin being fined and the Broncos could just eventually wind up sitting on his contract to ride it out. Bus Cook has also got Tony Scheffler involved now and he’s not intending to attend the meeting on Monday.

Who is most to blame for the Jay Cutler trade situation?

Selling his house for 2 mill doesn’t means he’ll get 2 mill for it. It was Cutlers job to impress McD not the other way around. How well did that go? Time to move on. A mature, team oriented individual will win us more games than a me first little boy. I guess DE is no longer our greatest need.

PS I agree with you completely Mr. East. You have my vote.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    jchase8410

Oh … you assume that his house will be sold…now im going to add in your generic “hahahahahaha”

Am I off my rocker ?…. I think this whole issue is stupid, the amount of time spent on it. I’m glad that Cutler has asked for the trade and hopefully we can get it done soon, so all of you Cutler fans can join him. Meanwhile me and the denver broncos will be better off. And no Im not going to get into how we’re going to be better off … because then we go on and on about how you all think Cutler is amazing and I dont.

Broncotalk staff please let me know when Cutler is traded, I’m not wasting anymore of my time speculating on this shit.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

2 mil? pennies next to the cash we paid him the last two years! Don’t be silly. BTW How many players request trades, don’t get them and then play? I can think of several off hand.
One of them was NBA MVP last year!
    Cutler over Coach
    Coach is replacable

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

    er… replaceable

  • jcampb72

Richard, DE was never our first need, a NT is.

  • broncoNM

Players demand trades all the time and end up not being traded… i dont think that will guarantee Cutlers departure. Unfortunately i dont think McD intends on keeping him. I agree that he will get value for him. Some team will offer the broncos a deal they cant refuse. Imagine the front offices of the vikes, bucs, browns, jets, lions etc hearing that Cutler is on the trading block. These guys must be freaking out. A franchise QB= jersey sells+better offense/more points=more ticket sales. I think Cutler will be dealt. McD has to be confident that he does not need cutler to have a successful offense. Thats why he isnt kissing his rear. I think he is crazy but thats what it seems like. I could definitely see a trade before the draft. I think the browns are nuts if they dont offer up quinn and some picks or quinn and rogers. Quinn and anderson are unproven and inconsistant. Cutler is proven with a better skill set.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

Dee, you assume that the PLANNING portion of his, “I was PLANNING on buying 40-70 acres” had nothing to do with whether or not his house was sold. Think things through before you post them, jeez. Like arguing with my 7 year old.

  • http://broncotalk.net (dee)

    jchase8410

This is my last comment for you, and how my argument you believe is flawed. So lets assume Cutler gets his 2 million for his home, you believe he’ll be able to buy his 70 acres. Did you realize the home he is selling is only 1 1/2 acres ? And he wants 2 million for it , he also wants to buy 70 acres… ??? Do you see how this will become a problem?

    Heres the link http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_11906852

So there you go, I’ll assume you dont have any mental disabilities and that you are just stupid.

  • jcampb72

If he gets traded it better be reallllllllll sexy!

  • Nicole

Well gang I take back what I said about him being around. If you read the stories from both of them- Jay’s story actually sounded more truthful. Josh actually gave a generic story. He was also reluctant about saying anything-probably wasn’t prepared for the questions. The trade will happen and as for all of you who have said that you’re glad he’ll be gone, it will literally take you a decade to find another one that can last. Cutler actually is playing the way Troy Aikman did at this point. They both made bad mental mistakes and he’ll come out of. Unfortunately for you it won’t be here because all bets are on and yes the vikings are coming too. I don’t understand their concept… run off the qb! Now Josh wants to save Jay from running- he has a different alternative. I can hardly wait.

  • broncoNM

This could open the door for a shanahan- cutler reunion. Believe it or not i could actually see Dallas getting in the mix and trying to land Cutler as bate to try and convince Shanahan to come coach a bit ealier than expected. I know its a long shot but there is concern in Dallas that Romo cant win the “Big Game” and that Phillips has lost the team. Not sayin its going to happen…Im just sayin.

  • Tom9798

    I posted this blog a week ago . . . and my worst fear was correct . . .

“There is the possibility that Jay Cutler decided in his heart that he no longer wanted to be part of the Bronco organization when Shannahan was fired . . . period.

He was extremely unhappy with Pat Bowlen and felt betrayed that this man could have fired his coach . . .

He did not know McD or Xanders at the time . . . and it didn’t matter . . . after they came on the scene . . . his decision clarified

He has not answered Pat Bowlen’s phone calls for one reason . . . he does not like Pat Bowlen and no longer wants to work for the man.”

  • juice

Mr. East and Dee are being the most logical about this. Best thing since Elway? Pretty sure that Plummer won a playoff game and Griese got us there since Elway… but sure I’ve drinken the Kool-Aid before too!

What Mr. East said actually made the most sense out of anyone pontificating on the subject: McDaniels probably can crap out functional system QBs like Bobby Turner can crap out functional system running backs – which really throws a wrench in Cutler’s plans of being the highest paid in the league…

Cutler’s feelings got hurt with Shanahan’s firing costing him his looming $125 million dollar contract.

And lastly… In case you haven’t been able to figure it out: Bus Cook, or someone close to him is Klis’ “source” – so that is why the Denver media is painting this in Jay’s tint. The Broncos for years have been too classy to air these kind of disputes out in public (Tyronne Braxton, Shannon Sharpe come to mind) … and its not like they’d start the mudslinging now – ESPECIALLY against a franchise quarterback with a new coach – This is Bus Cook being Bus Cook.

  • juice

Perhaps this is all Bus Cook’s grand scheme:

Get Cutler out of Denver so that Denver lures Brett Farve out of retirement, thus making B. Cook more money…

    I kid, I kid.

  • BroncosTrevizo

I want to know, Who Brono will get a new QB? Matthew Stafford or Brady Quinn or WHO?!

  • jcampb72

Pretty sure we had a sick defense those years Juice

  • juice

jcampb72 – you’re right – we had a better defense – and Defense wins championships! Not Quarterbacks.

Let’s do the math: How many superbowls did these “statistically” sound quarterbacks win: Marino, Boomer, Farve, Elway, Kelly, Moon:

    3.

3 championships over the 15+ years of their careers.

  • juice

I guess I’m coming the conclusion that system quarterbacks are better than advertised since everybody wants a cannon arm…

    Aikman (system, average athelete)
    Montana (system, weak arm)
Young (backup in TAMPA, until the West Coast offense)
Brady (I think he’s underrated as an athlete – but as far as a system goes, if he was in a West Coast offense, he’d suck!)

Now look at those Superbowl victories compared to my last list… (Heck, if you took Elway off my last list they’d only have ONE championship)

And before I get boo’d off the board: Like many of you, Elway IS my favorite athlete of all time.

  • jcampb72

Yup, in the last 10 years there has only been 1 team that had poor defense and won a superbowl, tha colts. Even then they had playmakers on their D. I’d take a sick D over a sick O any day.

  • NathanH

The only 2 options for us besides Simms RIGHT NOW that I can see:

Option 1- The 5th pick and Brady Quinn for Jay Cutler and a 5th or 6th.

I like this option because Quinn to me has a lot more talent then Matt Cassell, whom McDaniels made work in his offense. Also, with the 5th, we could assure ourselves Raji, and at 12 take Jackson/Brown/Cushing/Jenkins. This would be the ideal situation if he’s gonna be traded.

Option 2- The 1st and 20th picks for Cutler.
The Lions get a franchise guy and could really improve with Cutler throwing to CJ. We get a chance to draft who ever we want, and would have 3 1st round picks, which could change the face of our team. Remember that Cutler was a pick near what we have this year, it’s not crazy to think we could get better talent with the #1, 12, and 20. Take Stafford or Sanchez with the first after many interviews(i’m not high on either). And with the 12 and 20 go D.

  • jcampb72

I’d be fine with system QB if we had a good D.

  • NathanH

jcampb- agreed. What about this scenario-

I know its highly unlikely, but what if we did the Detroit trade and didn’t take a QB in the 1st? And instead picked up a smart lower round guy? It’s unlikely for Curry going 1 overall more then anything, but our D would be set with say…Curry/Jackson/Matthews. I don’t know, just toying around with situations since I really think he’ll be gone now.

Also, what do you guys really think about Stafford? I don’t like him but that seems to definatly be an option.

  • jcampb72

To be honest I don’t know much about stafford. But the lower round guy could be the kid out of K state, josh freeman.

  • jcampb72

I don’t like the idea of getting the number 1 overall pick with all that money on an unproven player when we have like 1.5 mill against the cap this year with Cutler. Its just not economically viable not to mention a huge gamble. Quinn and their 1st would be smarter I think.

  • Glenn S.

I think we all need to look back at Ocho Cinco. Around this time last year Chad Johnson was shooting his mouth off just like Jay…but he still had years left on his contract and the Bengals weren’t gonna budge. I think the Bronco brass needs to teach Jay a valuable lesson here…look at Ocho Cinco now—team oriented, well behaved.

I say you keep Jay and start Simms if it becomes apparent that Jay is going to be a biatch and not work hard and compete. Who knows maybe Chris will play really well and motivate Jay to get out there and show what he can do. I think Jay is competitive enough that as long as we keep him on the roster, when the season rolls around he’ll want to get in the mix.

Keep him on the roster, fine him if he acts like a turd and make him live out his contract to teach him and Bus Cook a lesson. We must make sure that that old ambulance chaser Crook isn’t gonna get a huge payday out of making a mockery of a great organization.

  • http://www.google.com T-Money

At least this crap is over. I hate to say it, since i think jay is an unbelievable football player, but i’m sick of worrieing all the time about it.

    MCD reads aloud to himself…

    Spring Cleaning Checklist:

    Head Coach: Check
    Front Office: Check
    Defense: Work in progress
Offense: Didn’t need much but Check
Jay Culter: Remailns to be seen but 99% check
Piss off 78% of the Fan Base: Check
Chance a winning a superbowl: Woops, I think this one goes out the window with the Cassel in KC.
An ageless smack down by a pissed of offense: Priceless

God, Matt Cassel never sounded so good right now.

  • http://fftoolbox bryan scott

First of all cutler was the quarterback before josh got there, If he felt that he could not win with cutler he should not have took the job. Cutler did not want shanahan to leave but still supported mcdaniels publicly and they go behind his back, Then lie to him in his face and some of the people on this post blame it on cutler, Thats dumb.

  • BroncoinVA9986

yuck yuck……I still say wait for eight o clock

  • http://birty.blogspot.com mikebirty

Tell you what interests me about this – and that’s the media cycle. As soon as the story broke I was on Team Jay and I think, judging by the comments it was about 80-20 for Jay.

Then Bus started spinning his machine and I went to Team Just Stop It Both of You. And from what Doom and Dawkins have said, the team seem to be in this camp.

Now Jay’s had his face to face, he’s had plenty of opportunity to get over it, he’s been given ample chance to put it to bed, he’s ignored Mr Bowlen, he seems to insist on having Bus Cook shadow him. Now we don’t know what went on in those meetings but from the way that both sides are playing the media and the quotes that are coming out, I don’t mind admitting I’m now firmly in Team McDaniels. (Kudos to the Broncos Media Staff, they’re the only ones coming through with flying colours!)

At the moment, the only thing Jay has going for him is the support from the fans. And I think he’s very close to losing that. I reckon its about 60-40 now. What happens when Jay loses 11% more?

  • BroncoinVA9986

    Bus Crook is responsible also.

  • BH

I haven’t been worried until now. Now, I am worried. I think letting Cutler go under any circumstances would be a BIG mistake. We spent 10 years trying to find a QB, finally get him, and then this mess happens. Are we going to become the Chefs, Faders, Browns or Lions? I agreen with Ian Henson though, that I still think that he will be our QB next year. So, hopefully, I am worried for no reason. This whole mess seems so pointless.

  • http://fftoolbox bryan scott

But the thing is mike birty the fans are the ones who buy the tickets and these are the facts, There was no problem at quarterback until josh got in denver, jay cutler is a top 10 QB in this league and he did not deserve this from the broncos.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

    Fire Team McDaniels!

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Cutler is not the messiah plain and simple. Vince Young took his team to the playoffs without an offense and a mediocre defense. If he wasn’t such a “sensie” then he would actually be great.

The fact is the head of the team is the “head coach” it’s in the title. Cutler didn’t like that McDaniels wasn’t anointing him the best thing in the world. It’s not that it hurt his feelings but more so his wallet.

I understand that everyone has the notion that this is a quarterback driven league. Whether or not you agree with that statement the bottom line is the same. Cutler is not in Denver. That to me is a lack of leadership. It doesn’t matter how much he despises McDaniels or says that he “loves it here.” The bottom line is the same. If Cutler really wanted to be here, he would. We can rational all day why it’s okay for him to be elsewhere but there is no reason. I don’t care if McDaniels is the anti-christ, Cutler had a commitment to his team.

Jay Cutler does not care about Denver. Cutler was drafted here, he feels no emotional ties. Cutler would much rather be a Titan or a Bear than a Bronco anyday. Jay wants the pay day as well, and he figures he can get that outside of Denver. If Jay wanted to be a Bronco he would be here.

jcampb – For the last time! The offense was not 2nd in the league! When do yards count for anything? Scoring is what counts, and when it comes to that they were a mediocre 16th. McDaniels offense at NE was much better than Denver’s last season. Cassel was sacked the most in the NFL as well.

  • Roy

Cutler wanted McD to call and say “let’s just me and you get away and have lunch or a cup of coffee’ and mend things?” are you flippin serious? He did that. Jay chose to stay in Tenn. Then, he did it again, and Jay chose to bring his agent, Yoko Cook, to the damn meeting. If you read the article Jay also said that if Bowlen wanted to talk to him he should have been at the meeting. Bullshit. If my boss calls me I am picking up the phone. This arrogent little punk is taking his position for granted. He is still a good QB, hell he could be great if he learned how to check down the damn ball.

Fire McDaniels? Really? Dude has not even coached one game. Bowlen probably hired McD because he was the only canidate who was willing to take a hard line with the players who were complete asshats, and lead the ones who are not. It sucks that Jay falls into the former category.

  • http://fftoolbox bryan scott

Mr east jay cutler is a proven QB in this league and josh mcdaniels has not proven anything besides taking the 1 strong position in denver which is the QB and trashing it, If this isn’t the 2nd coming of lane kiffin i don’t know what is.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

Roy, that was poetic. Good job of highlighting all the flaws in Jay’s statements. It’s clearly about the money, and he doesn’t care about Denver now that the big contract isn’t an option. I hope they put him in a Lions or Browns jersey. Send us Brady Quinn, he has the most upside and intelligence out of all the young QBs out there.

  • Richard

NathanH Keep on thinking the way you are, one of those scenerios will probably happen.

Someone mentioned it took 10 years to find Cutler, ie a QB for Shanny’s system. Shanahan is the past. It took NE 2 games to replace Brady. Neither Brady nor Cassell were high draft choices, so when we draft one or two don’t expect a first round guy.

Regardless of what some think, McD stays and has most likely improved his position with ownership. You can’t run a team by blowing the employees noses when they get out of joint.

Now that the Divorce is inevitable, its time to sort out the custody arrangements and alimony. There are at least 10 teams that need a QB. Some like the Bears wouldn’t be interested because the McKaskys are too cheap, others don’t have the firepower to make it happen, and one or two will be looking to acquire “the property” at fire sale prices.

THe Lions and Browns have been suggested by many posters, but there are others besides Tampa. Jacksonville for instance, the Viqueens, possibly Seattle, the Jets really put themselves in a bind with Brent Farve and need help badly. Of course having to deal with Buzz Crook again would not make their day. So other than the obvious 3, any thoughts?

  • Hansen

This has become management v. labor. Obvious Bus Cook is the cancer here as he has infected Cutler and has dragged Sheffler into the drama. Lets go management!!!!!

  • juice

Richard, good post: You forget that Brady and Cassell were late rounders.

Cutler = perfect QB for Shanahan’s system
No Shanahan = no longer the “perfect” scenario
Which equals – No max contract

Which equals a hurt wallet for Bus Cook and Cutler has to sell his homes because he’s been spending his “Shanahan Money” already.

  • BH

Based on these numbers, I would say that the future is pretty bright for whatever team is lucky enough to have Jay Cutler play for it in 2009 and beyond. I did not put wins down, which people will probably get upset about, but Elway from 83-85 and Cassel in 2008 had the benefit of pretty good defenses. Note the sack number for Cassel in 2008. A QB who gets sacked that much isn’t going to live very long.

It’s really to bad that McDaniels is too proud to say ‘I’m sorry’ and Cutler is too proud/greedy/selfish to be somewhat reasonable.

McDaniels made some initial mistakes, but Cutler is cutting ties. I’m not sure he realizes the opportunity that he is giving up. He’s most definitely not getting the best advice.

Jordan C, Roy and Mr East get a +1 from me. McD started this, but Cutler finished it.

Like the idea of Quinn. I’d take 5 (Raji), Quinn and a conditional in 2010 for 19 and Cutler right now.

  • merch22

I hope this gets fixed. If not trade him. SIMPLE AS THAT

  • Richard

mikebirty its 8:45 am, I’m willing to bet Prof X is talking to Cleveland now. I also like the idea of Quinn. That Golden Domer has sometyhing to prove after his “Brown” experiences. Raji with #5 for certain. Tyson Jackson with #12 or move down for a late 1st and additional 2nd rounders. Anyone else think Pat White in 3rd round?

  • JP

Idiot coach, such a novice approach is typical attitude of a Belichick regime. This kind of move and anti-relationship building certainly could have had been foreseen and I hold both Bowlen and idiot McDaniels responsible. Certainly the loosing has alienated fans over the last few years, however, this move has alienated fans and team members!

So now it’s “WHATEVER” and “WHO CARES’ and “BRONCOS WHO”?

So what if they get the best quarterback in the draft, it isn’t going to help for another 3 to 4 seasons. So what if they trade and get a mediocre quarterback to replace… there are some things you just can’t take back and as always there are probably things the public don’t know, the final responsibility falls on the idiot McDaniels!

The good news Broncos is the time it took to vent via this blog is the only time wasted on you this season. I certainly welcome the extra time to do whatever comes to mind as an alternative to watching or supporting you!! Enough is enough!!! My daughter Jaimee will be very happy, no Bronco football to deal with!!!
