CBS4 in Denver has reported that Jay Cutler is no longer in Denver after meeting face-to-face with his agent and Broncos officials.

Cutler will not be attending Monday’s voluntary team workout. Sources tell CBS4 he has told the Broncos to trade him.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Cutler stated:

“At the end of the meeting, [Josh McDaniels] wasn’t like, ‘Jay, I want you as our quarterback, you’re our guy.’ It felt like the opposite. He basically said that I needed to tell him if we can’t work this out, to let him know,” Cutler added. “I thought he was antagonizing me and that was disappointing because I was ready to move on, committed as a Bronco. Really, I figured we’d hash things out, shake hands, laugh a little and move forward. What happened [Saturday] was the last thing I expected. If I didn’t think it could be fixed, I never would have come back to Denver. It was painfully obvious to me and Bus [Cook, his agent] it’s not something they want to fix.”

McDaniels offers this translation:

“Again, I think that’s been a pattern. I couldn’t get [Cutler] to talk to me for two weeks or to talk to Mr. Bowlen. Then when he came here this weekend, we couldn’t get a one-on-one meeting, just me and him alone. He wanted Bus in there, so I had Brian sit in, too. And it was the four of us. There wasn’t any yelling, none of that. I can’t believe we get to a totally different [interpretation].

“It’s an unfortunate set of circumstances that has cropped up, a potential distraction and we’ve done our best to limit that. The main message I want to get out is that we’re excited to start our offseason program [Monday]. It’s an exciting time for us.”

It only gets deeper and deeper,

“I certainly went back there, expecting I’d be there [Monday] but not now,” Cutler said. “It’s not mandatory. I’ll attend every mandatory mini-camp and training camp but that’s it. Really, it’s best for me to move on. As coach said, he needs every eye in the meeting room to be on him and not me.”

Cutler said: “You know, even after the meeting, I hung around town, kind of expecting him to call me and say, ‘Hey, let’s just me and you get away and have lunch or a cup of coffee’ and mend things, but that didn’t happen. So, I get it, really, it’s a business. I’m disappointed beause [sic] I love being a Bronco but I think it’s run its course.”

This comes after a weekend when it was exposed that both Culter’s home and his parents were placed on the market for sale. As the situation develops we will be sure to keep you up-to-date.

“Nothing more than a coincidence. I had already shown my house privately to some interested buyers a couple of months ago,” Cutler said. “I’ve really been looking to buy 40 to 70 acres of land there.”

Cutler goes on to state that McDaniel’s told him that he had basically come to Denver to coach Cutler. Then Matt Cassel happened. Cutler stopped calling and wouldn’t return calls to Broncos owner Pat Bowlen.

“Josh and I have exchanged text messages. We had a conference call. And if Pat wanted to speak to me, why didn’t he come to the meeting on Saturday?”

Cutler’s agent Bus Cook magically appeared in the interview, when most agents may have chose to abstain. He states that as an agent he was “totally in shock” that it has gotten so ugly.

“I would have bet my house going into Saturday’s meeting that everyone would be shaking hands and smiling,” Cook said. “I thought it was going to get worked out. But it was very clear to me that Jay Cutler is not their choice to be quarterback of that team.”

However, Yoko Ono did admit that when he called Broncos General Manager Brian Xanders to request a trade on Saturday night, Xanders said it wasn’t going to happen and that “Jay should show up Monday.”

Denver has two options, they can trade him or sit on him. If Cutler misses off-season workouts, it’s only a little monetary loss to him. He says that he will make every mandatory camp. If he were to take this thing all the way to training camp he would begin being fined and the Broncos could just eventually wind up sitting on his contract to ride it out. Bus Cook has also got Tony Scheffler involved now and he’s not intending to attend the meeting on Monday.

By the way Danh and I got up again late last week for Bronco Nation, check it out here, we talk about this situation specifically and check us out on iTunes or direct download:

Who is most to blame for the Jay Cutler trade situation?

Well, Josh made it perfectly clear that nobody was secure from being looked at when trade talks begin. Nice way to assure our QB after he was assured that he was our franchise QB by Bowlen.
So what is one to think, after all this?
It is clear that loyalty is no longer a Bronco strong point as it was in the past. The day of being in a family if you signed with the Broncos is over.
So, Jay go out and take care of business, anybody in your shoes would do the same thing. We can’t expect you to believe anything from the Broncos front office anylonger. When you were told by the owner that you were our man for the future and a few short weeks later you were on the offer sheet , even tho it was just to look at all the options.

By having our new coach state that nobody was secure from being looked at in all options, I would suggest that all of our player better get with their agents weekly and make sure they are getting the best business deal they can get. Screw loyalty and team morality, Josh pretty much set the tone of who is the new sheriff in town is… Well, you did good Josh, yep you did really really gooooooood……

WHO CARES?!?!?!? Is Denver going to be held hostage by one player? Are we all going to buckle at the knees because Cutler wants out? Come on, everyone. We are better than this! We are the DENVER BRONCOS. Our team has a history that most other teams wished they had. We have the best fans in football. If Cutler wants out, let him out. Trade Cutler to a crappy ass team with lame fans and awful ownership. Let him see what it’s like to play in Detroit. Remember – as good at Cutler is, he’s a product of the system just like most other Quarterbacks. He isn’t going to throw 4000 yards playing on a team with a lousy offensive line.

There are a number of talented players out there, and our Superbowl journey isn’t going to be built on the back of one person. Our defense got infinitely better through FA so far, and we’re still growing. We have two strong running backs, a couple of rising stars in our receiving corps, and a young coach who knows how to win. If Cutler doesn’t show up tomorrow, put his ass on the banana boat and ship him out. We want winners on our team, not whiners.

  • Roy

Trade him to the browns for a 1 and 3 this year and a 1 next….get a free agent “band-aid” QB, select Bradford or McCoy next year. While Cutler is enjoying his time in Cleveland, he can wonder what might have been….all while fighting a staff infection (not that I am wishing that on ANYONE…but hey, it’s Cleveland…)

  • Keith

As much as I would hate to see Cutler traded, I think you have to go ahead and trade him. Not because he has “demanded” to be traded, but simply because of the fact that this will be a distraction for the entire off season and into the regular season. I think EVERYBODY involved played this entirely the wrong way (Bowlen, Xanders, McDaniels, Cutler, Cook). It will be very disappointing if Jay does get traded because honestly, without him, we are guaranteed to NOT make the playoffs for at least two years. Funny how Shanahan was fired because he was a terrible GM for the defense, and McDaniels comes in to fix it, and now the offense will be completely different. Oh boy….its gonna be a long time till the season starts. I’ll have my bottle of Tylonol right next to me.

  • jcampb72

Rob, cutler is the best thing to happen to denver since elway hands down. I know your trying to look on the bright side but hes still not going anywhere. Eventhough we have a drunk trust fund baby for a owner I don’t think hes that dumb to trade cutler for a unknown player. check it http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    pwsbronco,

You have to look at the big picture. McDaniels comes form a school of no nonsense no bullshit shut up and do your job. Cutler is obviously after the big contract and nothing will deter his mind from that. If Shanahan was still coach Cutler would be sitting pretty knowing he would eventually be the highest paid player in the NFL, now he knows that McDaniels is capable is capable of crapping out QBs left and right so he wants out while the market is still hot. This is one of the weakest QB free agency period and draft class ever.

This isn’t McDaniels’ fault, it’s Cutler’s. Josh McDaniels is building a team, and Jay Cutler is throwing a tantrum and tearing apart the organization. It doesn’t matter who you are, no one has the right to shut down the organization. Cutler ignored Pat Bowlen’s calls, the dude who signs his checks. That my friend is arrogance. Cutler is a punk and who was given several opportunities to make nice with McDaniels.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

    jcampb,

Nothing is the best thing to happend to Denver since Elway. Hell the best player to happen is Champ Bailey if you want to point fingers. Going 24-24 since Cutler was drafted isn’t something to brag about. Some players can’t win and seems to be on of those. Don’t bullshit about the defense it’s such an easy out. Cutler blew easy games like the Oakland and Miami games. You can talk all day about how he’s a godsend but he’s not even top 5 in the NFL. Peyton got it done with a much worse defense.

  • Roy

I will take a Simms who will do anything for his team over a “me first” Cutler anyday. There is nothing that pisses me off more than someone who thinks he is above the team. You win as a team, you lose as a team. In order to ensure unity, as a team captain, you take the high road. Somtimes that means venting your frustration with the boss in pritave, then moving on. You let your play do the talking, not your goddamn agent. F*** I am sick and tired of this!!!

  • pwsbronco

I agree, let him go right now if you don’t want him, but we are not doing that. What else does Jay have to say to go? I agree with you, let him go.
After all it is a business and it is a business for owners and players, not just owners. Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

I don’t see us being held hostage by anyone, I see us in a spot that our coach got us in, agree with it or not it does not matter. Don’t care if all are acting like a bunch of ego babies, just fix it. Let Jay go right now so he can do what is best for him while we do what is best for us.
And if you think we are going to let our QB go and possibly other major parts of our offense and not be hurt by that, hope that works for ya.

Our defense is better on paper now than last year, but at this time it has not touched the field so until then don’t know what the outcome is going to be there. But I do agree with you it is much much better than last year but I could replace last year from the old folks home and that also would be an upgrade.

Our d will be better this year , but the jury is out on where our offense is going to be but right now it is much much worse without Jay and Shef…. And our super bowl run is going to be built on the back of one person, and that is our QB, don’t know who that is going to be now but we took some very giant steps backward if we are going to let Chris or even Brady take the reins…… Hope I am wrong but I doubt it. and yes we do have the greatest fans but they have not taken us to the playoffs in the past 10 years either…..
We should be happy as hell with the FA start we had but now it looks like we just bettered the d at the cost of the offense….nice trade off Josh…..nice

  • Rob Bronco

Memo to Pat Bowlen: Take a look at Jeff Garcia. Look at his stats compared to Cutler’s during the same time period:

    2006
    Garcia – played in 8 games – 10 touchdowns – 2 ints – 95.8 passer rtg
    Cutler – played in 5 games – 9 touchdowns – 5 ints – 88.5 passer rtg

    2007
    Garcia – played in 13 games – 13 touchdowns – 4 ints – 94.6 passer rtg
    Cutler – played in 16 games – 20 touchdowns – 14 ints – 88.1 passer rtg

    2008
    Garcia – played in 12 games – 12 touchdowns – 6 ints – 90.2 passer rtg
    Cutler – played in 16 games – 25 touchdowns – 18 ints – 80.0 passer rtg

Just a thought. Te guy doesn’t throw picks. Sign him to a 2 year deal and draft a QB in the 1st round to groom.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

P.S. – Thats really disrespectful to call the Owner of your beloved organization a “drunk trust fund baby.” You should be ashamed of yourself.

  • George

    1) This is terrible for Denver, regardless of what they get in return for a trade.

    2) If Denver goes 10-6 next year and gets into the playoffs with the 14th ranked offense and 14th ranked defense, I don’t want to hear that “They did better without Cutler’s whining”… it simply means that their defense improved with Dawkins/Davis/Hill/Goodman/?Raji/?healthy Champ Bailey/?healthy Boss Bailey/?healthy DJ Williams/?an improved Dumervil at LB instead of DE where he got slaughtered against the run.

In other words, if they make the playoffs this year, it will be because their defense might improve at 9 positions, not because they are better off without Cutler. With Cutler and Jeremy Bates carrying on their 3rd ranked offense from last season, if they also had such a hypothetically improved defense they could reach the Super Bowl next year.

    2) I DON’T BLAME McDaniels. I believe him when he says that the trade talks about Cassel were initiated by other teams. McDaniels is an offensive guy, it would be absurd to expect him to retain Jeremy Bates.

    3) However, I BLAME BOWLEN for hiring an offensive head coach. The 2008 Broncos had one of the most drastic differences between offense and defense on the same team ever. I was shocked when Shanahan was fired, but then I thought that Bowlen had Spagnulo and Pioli lined up. When instead they got McDaniels and Xanders, I assumed that Spagnulo and Pioli didn’t want to leave their old teams. But it turned out that they joined the Rams and Chiefs, respectively, both teams much worse than Denver. Bowlen could have gotten them if he wanted. And if not Spagnulo, at least Jim Schwartz. And keep Jeremy Bates running the offense. With the same offense as last year and a defense lead by Spagnulo or Schwartz, they would be in great shape.

    4) When Shanahan was fired, did anyone expect that someone as mediocre as Mike Nolan would end up as defensive coordinator? I assumed that the timing of Shanahan’s firing was to induce a top defensive coach to join a team with a proven offense (kind of like when Tony Dungy joined the Colts). Indeed, my initial shock at Shanahan’s firing was eventually replaced by optimistic musings about which excellent defensive coach would be coming to Denver. But Mike Nolan? MIKE NOLAN? MIKE NOLAN???!!!

  • jbowman

i found it pretty ironic that when i got the text for this i was at the end of watching revenge of the sith with some people. obi wan yelling “YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE!”

yeah, thats about how i feel right now…

  • Eric in Vegas

It seems to me that all of the “anyone can be traded talk” isn’t a snide at Cutler, it’s a snide at Cutler’s best friend, Tony Scheffler. First, They fire his Coach, Mike Shanahan, then they fire his mentor, Jeremy Bates, then they trade his confidant, Tony Scheffler. Of course Cutler feels betrayed. And he has been. Given how long this has dragged on, I expect a trade on draft day, given:
    1) Cutler and 1st Rd pick to Cleveland for Brady Quinn and 1st Rd pick (pick swap). But ONLY if BJ Raji is still on the board by the Browns selection. You heard it hear first.

  • Boisebroncoguy

I just got through reading the ESPN article that had interviews with both Cutler and McDaniels. It sounds like they were at different meetings. Each one has a totally different version of what happened. How could that be? I don’t know what to think anymore. I am just fed up with all of them. What the heck is going on?!!!

  • Rob Bronco

Eric, that would be a fantastic trade if McDaniels could pull it off. I would take Brady Quinn. I don’t know if he’s a “franchise” QB, but he can get the job done. I still say look at Jeff Garcia.

  • jcampb72

Its true, you wouldn’t know bc you don’t live here remember. Champs a good player but he doesn’t win games for you. The qb is the most important position hands down, then LT. CB probably one of the positions that are least important on anyteam. Yeah manning did get it done but his D caught fire in the playoffs. I dnt know why you hate on Cutler so much, wouldn’t you be pissed if your team wanted to trade you for a worse QB? Think tom brady or peyton would be happy if there teams tried to trade them? no. I dn’t see who you could trade cutler for? draft picks, a vet and picks, maybe. I still don’t see him going anywhere.

  • jcampb72

p.s.-You have got to be an idiot to break up the second best O in the league.

  • Awesome, Austin

Rob, I like the stats of Garcia, it proves that he could be a great stop-gap. Then get a real qb that does not make a no-issue-type-thing into a way to get big bucks and destroy his team in the process.

Jcamp I do not see any of those other guys whining like a little baby if they were ever in trade talks…and they could have been and known about it, it just never got out into the media.

  • Awesome, Austin

p.s. not second best in pts and that is all that matters…

  • BroncoFan18

Though I hated the decision to fire Shanny in the first place, McDaniels actually grew on me a little bit. I liked the things he said and was happy with how active he was in free agency.

But his handling of Cutler is possibly the worst I’ve ever seen a coach handle the same type of situation. This could have ended the Saturday that the news the Broncos were trying to trade Cutler broke. But McD blew it.

I really have lost all confidence in his decision making as well as that of Pat Bowlen. Sure, Cutler hasn’t been perfect either, but do they realize just exactly how important Cutler is? Who could possibly replace him? Cutler is at the top of the list of untradable players.

And now here we are with Cutler ASKING for a trade! Unless McD pulls a miracle out of nowhere, this team is headed on a swift plummet downhill.

Lose your star quarterback to something like this? Worst coaching/managing I’ve ever seen. Wonder what Bowlen thinks about his choice to let Shanny go now?

    I’m disgusted.

But you can say “Cutler is a punk and who was given several opportunities to make nice with McDaniels.” McDaniels had as many opportunities to make nice with Jay!

You completely seem completely like the type to call somebody a punk in type but cower like the little bitch you sound like in person! Where I come from a man talks long shit like that face to face, not so cowardly as you. Why make it so personal?
Is the owner deserving more respect than any other man?

Gawd I’m doing the same thing that hack East is, out of anger. (I’d sure like to hear him talk like that over a beer in a dark bar though)

The fact is everyone involved seems wrong now! Scheffler? You must be kidding? Now if Champ walks off… that’d make a statement. I bet Dawkins is really shaking his head about now!

aw hell, I wish I’d have simply written BroncoFan18’s post and been done with it!

I’ll always be a loyal fan but I’ll lose a considerable amount of warmth for this present team if something doesn’t change frickin quick!

  • jcampb72

all im saying is elite qbs dont just fall off trees. I could see at least 25 teams that would trade their qb for cutty no questions asked.

  • broncoNM

The problem now is what kind of value we will get for a QB that has requested a trade? The broncos cant give him away! The broncos need to start a bidding war because there are plenty of suitors. If a GREAT offer doesnt come in than we have a disgruntled QB. period. Its bad enough we lose Jay but we have to make a team PAY for his services. There are teams that want/need him. The team will have to rebuild now and we need to stop the bleeding and get great value for him.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

I’m still waiting for McDaniels to say he wants Jay as his quarterback! I bet he told every free agent he brought in that he liked what they had to offer and wanted them on his team, right? Why can’t he tell Cutler this? He really sounds full of pure BS. Why not say it now?

“By entertaining our options we were simply looking out for Denver’s best interests. Jay Cutler will not be traded because we believe he has the potential to lead this team to the Superbowl. ”

He hasn’t said anything of the kind has he? I’m not saying he should kiss ass. But for instance, read the positive things he’s said about some of the free agents he hired. Why can’t HE “make nice” as East seems to think only Cutler can do?

  • DepressedSF

Guys, we may have dodge a bullet if we send Cutler packing. He’s a friggin head case. Can you imagine an NFL quarterback needing constant reassurance that he is the guy? Well, just look at Jay Cutler. Get rid of him now. You can’t have a franchise QB who is this insecure.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

Depressed? Constant reassurance? What reassurance has he received at all!!?? None that I’ve heard! Less than that of the least free agent we’ve hired this off season!

This is pretty unbelievable if the broncos do end of trading him. He is a Pro Bowl QB IN HIS PRIME. The guy is 25 with boat loads of talent and is coming off a record breaking year. Broncos will get tons of offers and will eventually find one that they will accept. I just cant believe this got this bad, this quick. If someone told me i wouldnt be wearing a Cutler jersey in ’09 I would have laughed my ass off. But here we are months later. Unbelievable.

I understand you are upset, however keep in mind Mcd and Bowlen are going to do what is best for our football team and not Cutler’s pocket.

Daniel – Spagnuolo let released Torry Holt and Orlando Pace .. two of the guys that took that team to its greatest heights…. I wonder what St Louis fans think of him getting absolutely nothing for them.

I understand everyone is upset and people think Cutler was great, he was GOOD … but I remember alot of times he was bad … I think Cutler wants to get paid and this whole trade scenario is a fast way to get out of Denver. I am willingly to bet any place he gets traded to, his agent will have them re-do is contract .. so he can buy his 70 acres.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

My two pennies, for what they’re worth? Well, I’m developing it, but Cutler will be a Bronco next season. If they trade him, we still won’t have any money to sign anyone. McDaniels stated it himself, ‘We won’t trade [Cutler] for draft picks.’ So unless Minnesota’s offering up Adrian Peterson, there isn’t a player in the world that I want for Cutler.

I think that McDaniel’s agrees, he’s smarter than all of us, that’s what we forget somewhere along the lines. If he wasn’t, well then, we’d be coaching the Broncos.

  • http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3983805 WhidbeyBronco

    Cowher?
You know, I believe McD’s a smart guy and is doing what he feels will win for us. I simply believe he’s wrong.
Jay’s said nothing about money. The only reason you (Dee & Others) claim it to be about money, is that it’s one of the few things that makes sense! …Or McDaniels is too full of his own pride to back down just the smallest of steps and let our team leader BE A TEAM LEADER. Coaches lead from the sidelines last I checked.

  • utah_bronco

Guys, I don’t know what to even think. When I think it possibly can’t get any worse, it proves me wrong again. Why can’t two grown men just admit they are both in the wrong? The way I see it is that both sides have done things wrong and both need to apologize and move forward. McDaniels for trying to trade Cutler under the table and Cutler for being a BABY!! The first few days of free agency was so promising until this bomb was dropped. I really don’t see Quinn being able to run the show and have my doubts about Simms. I hope Cutler and McDaniels can sit down w/out Crook and Xanders and fix this problem before we become the Raiders. I already feel like we’re heading that way and would rather miss the playoffs by one game than be in the cellar like the Raiders.

  • http://myspace.com/paraleipsis jchase8410

When Shanahan was fired (2 years too late), Bowlen said “Jay is the man around here now.” McDaniels said, “Im looking forward to meeting [Jay] and working with him.” Two weeks later, he attempts to trade “the man” for a career backup. That is what set Jay off, not the thought of being traded. His new coach lied hiss ass off, and then refused to own up to it. It is, and always has been, an issue of trust.

    Mr. East
Wasn’t Jay number on on your list of must keep players? Now you’re bashing him not being able to work for a fork-tongued coach. I guess you can call it whining, or being a crybaby, I call it taking a stand for decency.

As for everyone who is telling Jay he needs to shut up and realize that this is a business…He KNOWS it is a business, and is playing a business angle for himself. He is a commodity, and if he can get more money for himself, great for him. Why is there a double standard here? Why is it okay for the Broncos organization to deceive and mislead him, using the excuse of, “what is best for the Broncos,” but Jay hustling up a bigger paycheck is selfish?

Now the Jay has proven nothing because he hasn’t been on a winning team ctowd…please!

Come on man, if he is gone lets get over this crap and move forward. Cutler again was not all we had on this team, I hate this thinking that without him we’re ruined …. so I guess Clady is garbage, Royal is crap, guys like Hillis and Woodyard should be cut … 1 PLAYER DOES NOT MAKE A TEAM …

Now the Jay has proven nothing because he hasn’t been on a winning team crowd…please! 4500 yards and 25 td’s is doing his fair share an then some. Bring up the 18 int’s, please. Over 600 pass attempts on the season…what’s the percentage there? I’m sure, no running threat except those games hillis was active (all wins) had nothing to do with the redzone picks. When you have a short field to defend, pass coverage becomes easier, as you have less ground to cover. If you are not threatened by the run game, your backers can drop straight into coverage, and your d-line can rush the passer freely. That is near impossible for any QB to throw against on a consistant basis. If you don’t understand the situational dynamic of the game, your argument is invalid.

How is that for backing it up, East?

The Coach is greater than Cutler … WB Cutler is not going to stay here, once he has asked for the trade … its over there will be no kissing and making up.

Wb trust me , being mad about it wont change it. Cutler’s making his trade demands public now, only convinces me that he had asked for a trade when Bates was let go. Cutler wants everything to go thru him and that wont happen with McD. This thing has gone on too long and gone too far…. this has to end with Cutler leaving the team. He was a good player for us, but the Denver Broncos will win with another quarterback … Simms taking us to the playoffs could be a great story… I’m routing for the kid. ORRR we get Quinn and he has also impressed me.

    Dee

He is selling his house for 2 MILLION DOLLARS…you don’t think he could afford the land with that? Seriously, that’s one of your arguments? HAHAHA!!!

    Again Dee

He also publicly denied asking for a trade when Bates left in the same interview, so believe what you will…am overly honest QB, or an admitted liar of a coach. Secondly, good head coaches are a dime a dozen, young QB’s that make the pro bowl in their second full season starting (one of which he played through undisgnosed diabetes, mind you) who is still maturing and getting a grasp on his game…those are a commodity, and hard to come by
