In hugely surprising news, the Denver Broncos have been reportedly mentioning Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler in numerous trade discussions since free agency began yesterday.

The talks reportedly began when the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were working on a three-way trade that would have sent Cutler to the Bucs and quateback Matt Cassel to the Broncos. The Broncos opted out of the trade before the Detroit Lions approached Denver and New England with a similar trade. The trade talks became a moot point when Cassel was traded to the Chiefs early Saturday instead.

There are conflicting reports regarding the nature of the trade talks. Vic Lombardi of CBS4 Denver claims that the Broncos are “actively trying to shop” Cutler. Adam Schefter of NFL.com reports that the Broncos “firmly maintain that they never intended to trade Cutler, (and) that they were approached to make the trades.”

Both Schefter and Lombardi have spoken to Cutler and report that he’s upset at the rumors. Here’s what Cutler told Lombardi:

“I’ve heard the rumors. I know what they’re trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I’d love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it.”

I am simply floored. I can’t believe the Broncos are entertaining offers for Cutler, and I would be devastated if they were actively shopping him. Hopefully this all blows over soon…

    broncoNM –

Yes you right, i agree with you damn.

  • kerry

Joh Clayton just reported on ESPNews that Jay Cutler has requested to be traded. Xanders denied his request. so obviously MCDaniels wanted Jay gone but not Xanders. and now Jay wants out of Denver because of McDaniels lovefest for Cassell. well this season is ruined. our franchise QB wants out and the head coach wants him out.

  • Anthony33

Just saw on the NFL network that Derrick Ward is in town. Call it great day it they land him after bagging Dawkins.
Also, they interviewed a long time sports writter in Philly calling the move the worst move in Eagles history. Says Dawkins willed the team into the playoffs last year and was the heart and soul of the team, not just the defense. Wow.

  • ryan

Hey shanahan is still being paid by us…

  • Anthony33

Just saw kerry’s post. What a f****** mess. If true, Mcd is an F****** idiot.

  • Eric in Vegas

More important than the idea of trading Cutler is just looking at what McD is trying to build, overall: Patriots West Coast. Look at the “roles” he’s trying to build:

    Brian Dawkins = Rodney Harrison
    JJ Arrington = Kevin Faulk
    Jabar Gaffney = Jabar Gaffney
    Matt Cassel = Tom Brady
Of course, Eddie Royal = Wes Welker, and they already took the Patriots Long Snapper.

Denver already has the solid offensive line, so I expect 1 big body in the middle of the D (to fill the Vince Wilfork role) and then primarily focus on those smart, reactive LB that fit in the Patriots mold. I wouldn’t be surprised if part of the trade plan with the Lions was a swap of first round picks so the Broncos could take Aaron Curry and the Lions could avoid the shame of making another top mistake.

My problem with this is that I think the Patriots “formula” is done. Just copying it isn’t going to be enough – you have to improve on it.

  • soxbigdog

From everything I heard, it was the other teams that brought this up and not the Broncos, just testing the waters to see if they could pry his away.. the the general thought being that McDaniel thought so much of Cassel that he could use him as Cutler’s replacement…

but I would have to think one of the biggest drawing cards to bring a coach here was the fact that they already had a franchise quarterback and didnt need to draft or trade for one…

if it comes out in any way, shape, or form, that McDaniel and the Broncos were the ones that started these talks… then Bowlen should void their contracts on the spot !

  • Roy

I will offer anyone in here a piece of crap for a million dollars. Now you can all go report that you had entertained trade talks involving my poop.

The point is, that is all that it takes for “trade talks.” I offer, you tell me to go screw myself. Those are trade talks. If anyone really thinks McD would actually ship off a probowl QB for a one year wonder, with a weak draft class at QB, you had better get your heads examined. Or except my offer, I could use the money.

  • kerry

here is more info: Michael Smith reported that the Broncos CONTACTED the Vikings to trade Jay Cutler if the Vikings Acquired Cassel. and not only did the Broncos offer up Cutler, but our first round pick as well for Cassel?? anyone care to enlighten me as to why McDaniels should keep his job? Cutler and a first round pick for Cassel??? PPPPFFFTTTT where is Bowlen in all this?? at the bar with his head in the swill bucket?? at the country club sipping martinis? what the hell is going on? when did Bowlen put this idiot in charge. no wonder Mcdaniels wouldnt coment on this. he is mad he didnt get Cassel and wants Cutler gone. McDaniels has made a fatal mistake by pissing off the franchise QB and nearly made a bigger mistake by getting cassel and losing our first round pick. what an idiot.

  • T-Money

    Kerry

If Cutler wanted to be traded then why would he have said he was upset?

The media is just doing it’s job and you are buying into it. When has anything that the media said been correct. Especially ESPN.

  • http://broncotalk.net Ian Henson

Well, that happened. Haha, glad that it’s over.

  • Candide

The point isn’t whether there were trade discussions going on or not; it’s how they (Broncos Management) handled the media reporting it. If McDaniels first call wasn’t to Cutler telling him it was all BS, then the Broncos could have problems even if it was all BS.

OTOH it could be that McDaniels is trying to send a message to Cutler that nobody is sacrosanct.

  • kerry

    T-money:

Cutler asked for the trade after all the trade talks went down and after he said he was upset. he was upset because he is a franchise QB and McDaniels wants him out. he is upset by that very fact so he asked to be traded because McDaniels wants him out. McDaniels wont even comment on this. that right there tells you he wants Cassel and not Cutler. if he wanted Cutler he would have commented on the whole situation and tried to smooth things over. you know, damage control. its obvious McDaniels doesnt want Cutler. he was willing to trade him for an inferior QB. and the ONLY ones saying that the Broncos were “approached” is Xanders and Schefter. EVERYBODY else reporting this, ESPN, NFL Network (not Adam Schefter) Rotoworld and PFT have all stated that the Broncos initiated all the talks. so there is alot more there.

  • http://gregbon@mts.net Elway 4 ever

How’s Shanny looking now! Even if they just listened it scares me. I wouldn’t trade him for any QB in league. I can’t believe people can’t see the talent he has, work ethic, just wants to win!

  • Doomer

    Hey Bronco fans,

You better conduct a full dragnet search of the Broncos headquarters for a Matt Millen (who likely is dispensing insane advice to the management) and kick him out or end up with a 0-16 record next season like the Lions.

This is a friendly tip from a Lion fan!

  • Katch22

If Cutler goes I will fly back home to Denver and kick the shit out of both McD and X!

  • kerry
  • broncoNM

Dude its looking like McD/X screwed up. I mean really screwed UP! I am really concerned. He just pissed off the franchise QB and has no replacement. Im speechless. He has to patch this up NOW. He has no other options. This could be the dumbest thing i have heard a coach or GM do to a franchise.

  • http://brocotalk.net (dee)

Everyone take a deep breath , what McD and X did was listen to teams making them an offer for Cutler , they did not go to teams and say ” listen we’re trying to unload this guy” …. Teams actively came to the broncos and asked if he was available … and the front office listened to the offers. This is not a big deal, we all know Cutler can be a sour puss now and then … he needs to grow up … he needs to realize he is not more important than the team.

  • kerry

yep. the front office screwed the pooch on this. they better smooth this over REAL fast or this season will be lost. Cutler wanting out will divide the locker room and Cutler wont have his entire desire in any of the games. McDaniels F**KED up real bad. he has a pro bowl QB and wanted an inferior QB in Cassel. what an idiot. i have no confidence in MCDaniels at all. he may screw up the whole draft too.

  • T-Money

Do to the limited accuracy of the “the source” i have a hard time believing that it’s truth vs. the media. I don’t know. I’m not going to either side of the fence until i hear the words come out of cutlers mouth. There is just to much dis-credited information.

  • Roy George

Saddest thing of all is 17-2o record passes for a good quarterback in Denver these days. In case you are wondering Elway did not start a whole season and have a losing record until after visiting the bowl a couple of times. Bronco fans get over this kid until he does something. Anyone see the probowl? How bad was that defense? Can you blame that one on that defense? Trade the kid if you think it will help.

  • rcsodak

LMAO! Looks like McD sees what alot of us see…an above avg., primodona QB that will never get any better. He’ll throw an int. every game, and throw those great, inopportune red zones pics.
I wish they would have got Cassell and the Lion’s #1 pick. Raji or Curry would have been great.
And now, Cutler is showing the same amateurishness he’s known for, by crying foul. L-O-S-E-R!

  • broncobobmeridian
  • MikeY55

if mcdicks f***s this up i’ll be so pissed because jays best friends on the team will be pretty pissed about it too(scheffler and marshall) this can only make things worse mcdicks is a douche bag who for some reason is trying to change the offence when all he had to do was insert running back(btw derrick ward is visiting) marshall and jays contracts are up soon so there is a chance they may be so pissed with mcdick they both just walk away

  • broncoNM

    broncobob-
Good article. Atleast McD is talking now.

  • Anthony33

Holy S***. I cannot believe McD is that stupid. Fire him immediately and give the reigns to Nolan and see what happens. I am dead serious. McD just exposed himself as a complete fraud and there is no where to hide. He will never regain Cutler’s trust and does not deserve it.

Bowlen, get off your silly ass and say or do something! You hired this F***** clown.

  • rcsodak
Obviously, Josh and I’s relationship has taken a few steps backward
And he came from Vandy? LMAO! I guess he skipped the English classes……

  • rcsodak

Wow…the wheels are falling off the bronco wagon, I see….. lol

Maybe it’s time ya’ll start listening to what’s being said by the FO, instead of small-time reporters! And the same goes for Cutler. Frankly, he’s just showing his immaturity.

  • ckid7335

I just threw up in my mouth after hearing the Cassell for Cutler trade talks, unbelievable. This is by far the sickest thing I’ve ever heard, what the F are they thinking!!!!!

  • T-Money

“We don’t want to trade Jay. We never did. He’s our quarterback. We’re excited about this season. And excited about what we’re doing here in free agency to improve our team.”

    Enough Said!

  • CJ

Its gonna be hard to sleep tonight knowing jay might not want to be back but if Josh and xanders are Innocent like they say they are they will just explain to cutler and he will understand……. i hope

  • BroncosTrevizo

I am happy! Jay Cutler are SUCK and not good player! I want hope welcome to Cassel in Broncos!

  • stav

The only way for this to be ended is for Bowlen to make a statement. I love Cutler, but this is a business, if someone calls the Broncos with a proposed trade they have nothing to lose by listening to it. Obviously it leaked and I can see where Cutler’s coming from, but if the reports are true that Denver never initiated anything then he can’t be upset at management for just for listening. He’s got some growing up to do but he’s only human and you can’t blame him for the way he’s feeling, but seeking a trade out of Denver? Now he’s got to take a breath and realize that this is not the way to go about this. Get all the facts, speak to McD and Bowlen before you go running off with these trade demands. Personally, I’d never want Cassel as he’s nowhere near that talent that Cutler is. Wow, he won 10 games. Let’s all keep in mind that we had no healthy running backs and our defense couldn’t stop a Division III team from putting up 30pts on them, if we had an average defense we’d of won 10-11 games and would of won the AFC West. Let’s not forget the Cutler had no help this year.

  • OC Bronco

Whether or not they were considering a trade this is typical of Cutler and his poor handling of situations. Let’s face it, he has immense talent but is character is an issue and despite throwing for a ungodly number of yards last year he made WAY too many mistakes and didn’t get in the endzone enough. He needs to wake up!

  • http://broncotalk.net james

this is f****** great cutler is a great qb and we are just going to trade him to the lions for a first round pick who cares who we going to get stafford that guy could not hit the broud side of a barn if he was 2 yards away tampa who do they have to offer bowlen needs to end this stupid a** rumor cutler needs to calm down he will not go anywhere all the fans love him expecialy me he just rattled after the stupid lions and bucs had to get involved mcdainiels needs to say more so all us fans dont die from a heart attack this needs to be over bowlen get your a** in thier and stop this f****** madness

  • http://broncotalk.net james

denver end this now you have a great qb in cutler what the hell are you thinking cutler is better than stafford so stop it now or you will end up like the lions 0-16

  • stav

True, but if we had a consistent running game/running back and at best an average defense he wouldn’t be forced to throw as much. Figure 10-14 less attempts. Not so hard to imagine that his interceptions would be down 3-5 picks if the whole weight of winning wasn’t on his back. He can’t do it on his own which is what the case was last year.

  • Richard

Just when you think that McD and Prof X have their S### together and have made some smart moves in FA, we hear about this. If its true, McD is acting like a completely immature, insecure fool. If it isn’t true, then McD had better learn a quick lesson in Public Relations. My first thought was the other teams were trying to sucker an inexperienced coach into making a REAL BAD decision, ala the Dallas Minnesota Hershal Walker type trade. In any case, there’s some real damage control required, and it truely sucks when we should be cheering the acquisition of Dawkins and the other players.

  • http://broncotalk.net james

anthony 33 you are so right it is not funny if he does not a say something to get cutler back all broncos fans will hate him because we love cutler bad way to start off right now

  • Bronco6locnar

I agree Richard the damage is already done. Here is how we fix it, we will all move to china and just watch Elway highlights till we die.

  • Dan

Why would McD and X-man shop around a QB of Cutler’s caliber, and only going into his 4th year??? The kid is only going to get better! Idiotic. Bowlen needs to step in, like he did when Reeves tried to trade Elway, and tell these youngters that Cutler is UNTOUCHABLE. We don’t need a career backup (Cassel) – Cutler has more experience behind center than he does! Come on!

  • popatop

as a vandy fan jay doesnt seem to get any respect at denver if I were him i’d ask them to let me go. you cant have good numders in the red zone lying on your backside just like at vandy how about a little time or running game.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Lets hope Bowlen takes care of this shit…..and when I say, I mean McDumbass. Fire him. He blew it. He had a chance to coach a great team, and threw it away right away. Give the coaching job to Nolan. I would be 1000000% happier now. So what are the odds of my dream coming true?

  • popatop

Jay is a winner if denver dont want him let him out, but you will regret it.

  • Odsink

A good front office does just this, shop! Don’t blame the defense entirely as DS Cutler made enough mistakes to keep them on the field. And the persons that believe that Cutler is among even the top 10 QB’s in the league – WAKE UP!

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

0 to none Joe. No one is going to promote Nolan after the train wreck we call the 49ers. Rick Dennison would be great as an interim though, besides we considered him for the head coaching job anyway.

  • BroncoinVA9986

I think it would be best to kept this situation in house…….And have a closed door meeting between JAy….Xander…McDaniels….Bowlen…..and let the public know that everything is fine……we wont be a laughing stock like KC and Oak because we don’t continually lose double digit games every years

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

    Garrett Barnes –

What do you think of Rick Dennison being promoted than?

  • OC Bronco

People get ahold of yourself. I didn’t like Shanny’s firing but this is McDaniel’s team and if he needs to make tough decisions and Cutler is one of them then so be it. Don’t get me wrong I like Cutler over Cassell all day but maybe Jay needs to get with the program or maybe McDaniels has other ideas but this is his team now and unless you want to root for another team slow your roll.
And yes this rumor could blow over but where there is smoke there is fire so I am sure there is truth to it. Personally, I wouldn’t mind a new QB.
