In hugely surprising news, the Denver Broncos have been reportedly mentioning Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler in numerous trade discussions since free agency began yesterday.

The talks reportedly began when the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were working on a three-way trade that would have sent Cutler to the Bucs and quateback Matt Cassel to the Broncos. The Broncos opted out of the trade before the Detroit Lions approached Denver and New England with a similar trade. The trade talks became a moot point when Cassel was traded to the Chiefs early Saturday instead.

There are conflicting reports regarding the nature of the trade talks. Vic Lombardi of CBS4 Denver claims that the Broncos are “actively trying to shop” Cutler. Adam Schefter of NFL.com reports that the Broncos “firmly maintain that they never intended to trade Cutler, (and) that they were approached to make the trades.”

Both Schefter and Lombardi have spoken to Cutler and report that he’s upset at the rumors. Here’s what Cutler told Lombardi:

“I’ve heard the rumors. I know what they’re trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I’d love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it.”

I am simply floored. I can’t believe the Broncos are entertaining offers for Cutler, and I would be devastated if they were actively shopping him. Hopefully this all blows over soon…

  • Dee

    WTF, I hope Cutler stays

  • kerry

Xanders and McDaniels are both dumbasses. this is stupid. got a great safety and now are trying to dump off your franchise QB. there isnt a QB in the league or the draft that is equal to Cutler. so why do it?? McDaniels is an arrogant fool. this is the Broncos, not the Denver Patriots. Bowlen needs to put down his bottle of vodka and step in and put the lid on this Bulls**t right now.

  • flbronc

If that is true, that we were actively shopping him, GmX and McD have lost a lot of respect in my eyes. it will take a lot for them to regain it.

i hope that it isnt true. there’s not a better young qb in the league than cutler. cassel wont be as successful as cutler in the long term.

  • kerry

well a press conference needs to be called to address these rumors right now. before Cutler actually demands a trade because he knows they dont want him. Bowlen needs to get his nuts back and squash this right now. until i see McDaniels and/or Xanders publicly deny this then im not gonna calm down about it.

  • Sportalker

This HAS to blow over, with Cassel now in KC there is NO WAY McDaniels trades Cutler……He can’t actually believe he can get anything better than Jay. If Cassel would have gone somewhere else than we would have been in trouble. Detroit & Tampa have NOTHING as far as compensation to match Jay. With so much roster turnover as far as not bringing any of the FA from last years roster and the many moves they have made so far yesterday & today to change QB’s as well would be complete chaos

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

GOD he’s such an egomaniac, he’s being very immature. I can’t believe he said that.

It would be so stupid if McDaniels and Xanders didn’t even listen to the Bucs or Lions. Both of them have strongly stated that they had no intention on trading Cutler. If Cutler wants to be baby then thats great, shows what kind of leader he really is.

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

don’t believe it guys. vic lombardi is full of so much s*** I can’t even believe it. they were never shopping him. if they were than i am done with mcdaniels and will immediately demand that he resigns. on the bright side jay cutler is handling it well and I think he knows deep inside that this is all just stupid rumors. maybe some other people wanted him but we never entertained these offers.

  • Snowden

Everyone chill out. I’m saying this as a proud owner of two #6 jerseys, but every player, even Jay Cutler, has a price. If someone offered Matt Ryan, Adrian Peterson, a new stadium, and a cure for cancer, we shouldn’t be pissed if Denver takes the deal. Conversely, if Cutler was traded for a pair of Ryan Leaf’s jock straps, we’d be rightly pissed. Everything in between is a debate.

I’d be upset if we traded Cutler for Cassel straight up, but I never see a problem with entertaining offers.

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

CORRECTION: he is not handling it well.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

At this point I’d rather have another Quarterback thats smart enough to know the difference between fact and media bullcrap. I’m shocked he’s pulling this primadonna BS.

    Kerry –
Xanders did publicly deny it. Actually read the articles before complaining.

  • NathanH

He’s not goin to get traded. I’d bet my left nut on it. And if he does, I’ll be devistated. But if Schefter’s saying we’re not shopping him. WE’RE NOT SHOPPING HIM.

Lombardi is a joke trying to make something out of nothing to get his name in the national press. ****bag.

Really though East, you should consider taking this down. Cut’s going now where, and Lombardi is no more than a **** stain in the journalism world.

  • Sportalker

Now CBS4 is reporting that Tony Scheffler has been mentioned in trade talks as well………This is going to be interesting

  • kerry

wow. last night all of you were so in love with vic lombardi when he posted that Dawkins was signed when he wasnt. now all of you say he is an idiot because this is being reported. i wanna hear a public denial at dove valley by McDaniles and Xanders. stuff like this doesnt just appear out of thin air.

  • Andpark

Not even remotely funny. With Cassel at KC I think this is over but I almost had a heart attack. No better QB in the league long term right now then Jay Cutler. Hopefully 10 years from now, 3 or more Superbowl rings later, we will all laugh about that Sat afternoon in 2009 that we almost traded away our franchise QB. Oh those will be the days..

Great other moves regardless, McD is being aggressive, great Safety, new RB’s but don’t get too crazy. Cutler is the man, hopefully for a very long time.

  • T-Money

No matter how much all you guys bitch and moan there’s nothing you can do about it. He’s not being immature at all. He has the right to be a little pissed off. At least he has the balls to voice his opinion unlike most players in this league.

    It is a business
    It is a possibility
    It is not likely
    It is just the media

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

I get what you’re saying T-Money, but as a team player you don’t say things like that. If he’s a leader then he’ll shut his mouth before he has all the facts.

  • T-Money

CBS4’s Gary Miller spoke with Broncos GM Brian Xanders Saturday afternoon. Xanders denied any plans to trade Cutler, saying “We are not trying to trade Jay Cutler. We will not trade Jay Cutler. He’s a Pro Bowl Quarterback.” He went on to say, “you can ask Josh McDaniels, and he’ll tell you the same thing.” Miller did approach McDaniels, who said he was not going to answer any questions. However, Cutler confirmed to CBS4 that he is aware that trade talks have taken place.

  • T-Money

    What more do you need?

“We are not trying to trade Jay Cutler. We will not trade Jay Cutler. He’s a Pro Bowl Quarterback.”

  • http://www.broncomadness.com Garret Barnes

Remember guys, when we almost traded John Elway to the Redskins. I think that these two situations will have a similar outcome. =)

  • CJ

If Josh traded Jay Cutler i would leave this franchise never look back! I would follow cutler where ever he was traded to!!! How could they even think about it Matt Cassal isnt have near the skill jay has got he only looked good because he had randy moss and wes welker hes gonna look like shit in kc you watch

  • T-Money

Because Matt Cassal worked with JMcD… They already know each other and it makes it alot easier. That’s why it was so considered.

  • Trent

if its true and he gets traded. I will no longer be a broncos fan

  • Avery

Wish it would’ve happened. You all who praise Cutler need to open your eyes, he is a purebred loser who will accomplish nothing of significance in Denver. Get him out of here ASAP.

  • http://www.broncomadness.com Garret Barnes

i think we are all being a bit dramatic here: a lot of people said that if we fire mike shanahan they would no longer be fans. you can’t quit on a team due to one bad front office move.

  • ryan

    T-Money,

I don’t care if Cassal and McDaniels used to reenact scenes of “Brokeback Mountain” together. This is absolute garbage. If this is Josh’s attempt to cast a larger shadow over the franchise and become its face, like his Obi One in Patriot land, then he can go right back to the East coast right now. Right now, Cutler is the Broncos.

  • http://broncotalk.net RVG10

The trade only would have happened in the right situation (for Cassel) and ONLY IF the Broncos approved it. Neither happened. The Lions and Bucs were smart to try to get Cutler, but both don’t have anything to offer that can match Cutler’s worth. It’s all over.

P.S. On a side note, did anyone else notice that Dawkins held an orange #20 jersey at the press conference today? Maybe I missed this earlier, but it looks as if we’ll be wearing orange this year!

  • broncoNM

I really dont think Cutler is being immature. This is how i would imagine any franchise QB would act. He has taken responsibility for his red zone errors last season and stated that he would make that his focus for improvement. He is on the verge of being a top 3 QB in the league. We brought in McD to develop cutler into a Super bowl winning QB. It would be crazy to trade him. McD and Cutler have enormous potential. We could easily average 35 pts a game. Im sure this will all blow over but if he hasnt already, McD needs to call Cutler and assure him that he wants him in denver. Culter was the only reason this offense was No. 2 last year and if he had a decent defense and a running game he will lead this team to a championship. Man i gotta admit seeing that totally freaked me out. Free Angency was pretty fun until this came about.

  • Dakota Fan

Hey boys- I don’t live in Colorado, but I can tell from 500 miles away that Vic Lombardi is trying to make a play for a bigger, better job than the one he’s got right now. So much so that he’s jumping on rumors and all of the other crap that comes down the pike. Just because he has the name “Lombardi” doesn’t mean he’s a football genius. If News4 had any brains, they’d can his butt before he did something that got the station in deep crap.

I think something good can come out of this- as a young QB who’s looking to show that he is maturing, Cutler could just smile and say he believes his head coach and GM when they say they’re not going to trade him and leave it at that. If something is going on behind the scenes, I hope this doesn’t turn into another John Elway-Dan Reeves debacle.

  • Bronco6locnar

Mr. East, Cutler isnt a hippie baby. He is a competitor, and any competitor is gonna get angry when trade rumors are floating around. Cutler doesnt hold anything back, he wants this to be his team and he wants to win. Im with Cutler, I was upset that Tampa and Detroit even thought for a second that we would trade him, that was enough to set me off and i think thats all that Cutler is feeling.

  • kerry

Xanders denied it through another source. he didnt get up to the podium at Dove valley and deny it. Jerry Jones does that when players are mentioned to be traded or released. Bowlen needs to do it.

  • http://broncomadness.com Garrett Barnes

    agreed kerry.

  • pwsbronco

Man what a bunch of crap, can’t believe anyone would believe this junk…. As if Bowlen would allow our franchise QB to go anywhere for Cassell or any QB for that matter. Sounds like someone wanted to stir up the BS by creating a false headline….
P*ss poor reporting that does nothing but get the fans whinning about this…. wake up everyone and stop believing everything you read….Geeeeeez, can’t beleive some people….
Oh, yeah, the broncos are also going to re-sign J.Walker….. And why would you not believe that but yet you fall so quickly with this garbage they try to pass off as Bronco news…..Stop being so damn gullable…

  • T-Money

    ryan-

I agree man. I’d be royally F’ing pissed if we traded Cutler. I’m just speaking realistically. Why else would Matt switch for Jay? There’s no point or logic to it other than the New E. Ties.

  • champ2203

McDaniels and Xanders are dicks if they even considered moving Jay. X anders said they never considered it and said to ask McDaniels and he’d say the same thing. When they asked McDaniels he had no comment. What a gutless prick. This isn’t New England stop bringing all these people we don’t need. A number four receiver in Gaffney we don’t need him at all. A long snapper for christ sake getting paid a rediculous amount to do one thing. You want to spend 5.5 mil for someone to do one job go get a decent kicker that can make extra points and 25 yrd field goals and make it to the endzone in the thin air on kickoffs. Why wouldn’t jay beleive the talk though its New England and our coach that is trying to bring in anyone he can from where he came from. Anyway the dawkins signing was good, still think ray would have been way better than davis. Atleast he anchored a great defense for years and knows how to be a leader. Despite the negativity I love the Broncos I’m just not a homer I have my own opinions. Agree or disagree them?
thekidd0322 aim screen name. lets talk about it.

  • Big D

What a bunch of idiots. Al Davis er, I mean Pat Bowlen got exactly what he wanted after he fired Shannahan, A couple of yes boys who woll do exactly what he wants them to do. Denver will be lucky to win 6 games next year, and lets see who Bowlen blames then.

  • jibbons

take a pill fellas, when you are taking offers, you hear eachone out, and simply refuse the bad ones.

As far as Cutler goes, the only way he could have said less, would be to say nothing, and we all know that ‘no comment’ is not in his vocabulary. But still vic is the only one running his mouth. I’m putting him on my msm blacklist with woodie paige.

  • kerry

yeah Mcdaniels saying no comment means he wanted Cutler gone. maybe Xanders did deny this (although not publicly which he needs to do immediately) this shows McDaniels and Cutler arent on the same page. McDaniels is already trying to destroy this team and mold it like Belichick. if Cutler gets traded we wont win 4 games next year. take that to the bank. if anyone of high value shoudl be trade its champ Bailey. not jay Cutler.

  • http://BroncoTalk.net Mr.East

If people stop becoming fans if Cutler is traded then you were never really a fan to begin with.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Everyone relax, Cutler will not be traded…..

  • merc22

SO WHAT FROM WHAT YOU GUYS ARE SAYING…HE WILL NOT BE TRADED, CORRECT???

  • Anthony33

All just say this. If it’s true, even thinking of trading Cutler that is, then Xanders and McD should be lamblasted and flogged. If it’s false, which I think it is, the same for this Lombardi clown.

Who knows, but I agree with kerry, get in front of a fricking microphone and address it head on, either way.

  • T-Money

    Wow Kerry.

That was probably your most ignorant message yet. For being someone speaks “reality” you are sure doing a good job of labeling everyone in the front office as well as being incredibly judegemental. Not to mention that you craming words into McD’s mouth. Last time i checked, everything you just said, has NOTHING to do with “reality”.

  • broncoNM
  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

Shefller is most of the time right. So this means that he must have heard that Xanders and McD have said that they never wanted to trade cutler. And think of it guys……Who the hell would we get from Detroit or Tampa?? A first round pick and some???? what the hell would that do for us. Get Detroits first round pick than realize that you dont have a QB and than draft one?? Than have to start the learning process with a young QB all over again? Thats a laugh riot. Everyone needs to chill the f*** out. McD will keep Jay. Remember all of the interviews with him at the combine? He said he was looking forward to working with Cutler, and he is good and bla bla bla. I dont think he would say that than want to trade him. And he even said that he has a good relationship with Cutler so far. This whole thing is a bunch of BS. Jay Cutler is safe in Denver……Think about it…

  • BroncosTrevizo

Why not Jay Cutler trade to Lions (QB) Matt Stafford in Broncos?

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

And BroncoNM has a great site, with quotes from Shefter saying that the relationship between Jay and Denver will be repared. They didnt do anything wrong. They didnt call anybody. They called Denver. And Shefter said that they were not shopping Jay Cutler. They never tried to make a deal.

  • http://broncotalk.net Joe

    BroncosTrevizo –

Think about it. That means that Denver would suck for about two years until he got some experience under his belt. Jay has gotten his two years in, and is a probowl QB……

  • T-Money

    BroncosTervizo

Did you honestly just ask that question?

  • broncoNM

The biggest problem i would have with us trading cutler to detroit for stafford would be that stafford is going to SUCK and Cutler will be a top 3 QB next season. Thats my only issue with it. Stafford will Suck and Cutler is a proven pro bowler and a proven franchise QB. Small details.

  • BroncosTrevizo

No, i just want trade to Matt Stafford Broncos but see happen in later..
