In hugely surprising news, the Denver Broncos have been reportedly mentioning Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler in numerous trade discussions since free agency began yesterday.
The talks reportedly began when the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were working on a three-way trade that would have sent Cutler to the Bucs and quateback Matt Cassel to the Broncos. The Broncos opted out of the trade before the Detroit Lions approached Denver and New England with a similar trade. The trade talks became a moot point when Cassel was traded to the Chiefs early Saturday instead.
There are conflicting reports regarding the nature of the trade talks. Vic Lombardi of CBS4 Denver claims that the Broncos are “actively trying to shop” Cutler. Adam Schefter of NFL.com reports that the Broncos “firmly maintain that they never intended to trade Cutler, (and) that they were approached to make the trades.”
Both Schefter and Lombardi have spoken to Cutler and report that he’s upset at the rumors. Here’s what Cutler told Lombardi:
“I’ve heard the rumors. I know what they’re trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I’d love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it.”
I am simply floored. I can’t believe the Broncos are entertaining offers for Cutler, and I would be devastated if they were actively shopping him. Hopefully this all blows over soon…
